Most traditional semiconductor materials are based on the control of doping densities to create junctions and thereby functional and efficient electronic and optoelectronic devices. The technology development for halide perovskites had initially only rarely made use of the concept of electronic doping of the perovskite layer and instead employed a variety of different contact materials to create functionality. Only recently, intentional, or unintentional doping of the perovskite layer is more frequently invoked as an important factor explaining differences in photovoltaic or optoelectronic performance in certain devices. Here we use numerical simulations to study the influence of doping and photodoping on photoluminescence quantum yield as well as other device relevant metrics. We find that doping can improve the photoluminescence quantum yield by making radiative recombination faster. This effect can benefit or harm photovoltaic performance given that the improvement of photoluminescence quantum efficiency and open-circuit voltage is accompanied by a reduction of the diffusion length. This reduction will eventually lead to inefficient carrier collection at high doping densities. The photovoltaic performance might improve at an optimum doping density which depends on a range of factors such as the mobilities of the different layers and the ratio of the capture cross sections for electrons and holes.
Here we use time-resolved and steady-state optical spectroscopy on state-of-the-art low- and high-bandgap perovskite films for tandems to quantify intrinsic recombination rates and absorption coefficients. We apply these data to calculate the limiting efficiency of perovskite-silicon and all-perovskite two-terminal tandems employing currently available bandgap materials as 42.0 % and 40.8 % respectively. By including luminescence coupling between sub-cells, i.e. the re-emission of photons from the high-bandgap sub-cell and their absorption in the low-bandgap sub-cell, we reveal the stringent n…
Tin fluoride (SnF2) is an indispensable additive for high-efficiency Pb-Sn perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, the spatial distribution of SnF2 in the perovskite absorber is seldom investigated while essential for a comprehensive understanding of the exact role of the SnF2 additive. Herein, we revealed the spatial distribution of SnF2 additive and made structure-optoelectronic properties-flexible photovoltaic performance correlation. We observed the chemical transformation of SnF2 to a fluorinated oxy-phase on the Pb-Sn perovskite film surface, due to its rapid oxidation. In addition, at t…
Organohalide perovskite with a variety of surface structures and morphologies have shown promising potential owing to the choice of the type of heterostructure dependent stability. We found that MAPbI3ML deposited on BN-ML shows room temperature stability (-25 meV~300K) with an optimal bandgap …

Tandem perovskite solar cells beckon as lower cost alternatives to conventional single junction solar cells, with all-perovskite tandem photovoltaic architectures showing power conversion efficiencies up to 26.4%. Solution-processing approaches for the perovskite layers have enabled rapid 2optimization of perovskite solar technologies, but new deposition routes are necessary to enable modularity and scalability, facilitating further efficiency improvements and technology adoption. Here, we utilise a 4-source vacuum deposition method to deposit FA$_{0.7}$ Cs$_{0.3}$Pb(I$_x$Br$_{1-x}$)$_3$ perov…
Halide perovskites have outstanding photovoltaic properties which have been optimized through interfacial engineering. However, as these materials approach the limits imposed by the physics of semiconductor junctions, it is urgent to explore alternatives, such as the bulk photovoltaic effect, whose physical origin is different and not bound by the same limits. In this context, we focus on the flexo-photovoltaic effect, a type of bulk photovoltaic effect that was recently observed in oxides under strain gradients. We have measured the flexo-photovoltaic effect of MAPbBr3 and MAPbI3 crystals und…
We demonstrate four and two-terminal perovskite-perovskite tandem solar cells with ideally matched bandgaps. We develop an infrared absorbing 1.2eV bandgap perovskite, $FA_{0.75}Cs_{0.25}Sn_{0.5}Pb_{0.5}I_3$, that can deliver 14.8 % efficiency. By combining this material with a wider bandgap $FA_{0.83}Cs_{0.17}Pb(I_{0.5}Br_{0.5})_3$ material, we reach monolithic two terminal tandem efficiencies of 17.0 % with over 1.65 volts open-circuit voltage. We also make mechanically stacked four terminal tandem cells and obtain 20.3 % efficiency. Crucially, we find that our infrared absorbing perovskite …
We develop techniques to study the temperature dependent localization, thermalization, and the effects of phonon scattering on the excitons in halide perovskites from the analysis of the emission spectra. The excitonic Urbach edge, when inferred from the low energy tails of the temperature dependent luminescence spectra, is shown to be sensitive to the electron distribution and thermalization. A method to observe the Urbach focus is devised for halide perovskites where the temperature dependence of the excitonic gap is anomalous. The value of the zero-point bandgap renormalization is inferred …
Methylammonium lead iodide perovskites are considered direct bandgap semiconductors. Here we show that in fact they present a weakly indirect bandgap 60 meV below the direct bandgap transition. This is a consequence of spin-orbit coupling resulting in Rashba-splitting of the conduction band. The indirect nature of the bandgap explains the apparent contradiction of strong absorption and long charge carrier lifetime. Under hydrostatic pressure from ambient to 325 MPa, Rashba splitting is reduced due to a pressure induced ordering of the crystal structure. The nature of the bandgap becomes increa…
The low ionization energy of an $A$ site molecule is a very important factor, which determines the thermodynamical stability of $A$PbI$_3$ hybrid halide perovskites, while the size of the molecule governs the stable phase at room temperature and, eventually, the bandgap. It is challenging to achieve both a low ionization energy and the reasonable size for the PbI$_3$ cage to circumvent the stability issue inherent to hybrid halide perovskites. Here we propose a new three-membered charged ring radical, which demonstrates a low ionization energy that renders a good stability for its correspondin…

Inorganic lead halide perovskites are promising candidates for optoelectronic applications, due to their bandgap tunability, high photoluminescence quantum yield, and narrow emission line widths. In particular, they offer the possibility to vary the bandgap as a function of the halide composition and dimension/shape of the crystals at the nanoscale. Here we present an aberration-corrected scanning transmission microscopy (STEM) study of extended nanosheets of CsPbBr3 directly demonstrating their orthorhombic crystal structure and their lateral termination with Cs-Br planes. The bandgaps from i…
Halide double perovskites have gained significant attention, owing to their composition of low-toxicity elements, stability in air and long charge-carrier lifetimes. However, most double perovskites, including Cs2AgBiBr6, have wide bandgaps, which limit photo conversion efficiencies. The bandgap can be reduced through hallowing with Sb3+, but Sb-rich alloys are difficult to synthesise due to the high formation energy of Cs2AgSbBr6, which itself has a wide bandgap. We develop a solution-based route to synthesis phase-pure Cs2Ag(SbxBi1-x)Br6 thin films, with the mixing parameter x continuous var…
Recent research in ultrawide-bandgap (UWBG) semiconductors has focused on traditional materials such as Ga2O3, AlGaN, AlN, cubic BN, and diamond; however some materials exhibiting single perovskite structure have been known to yield bandgaps above 3.4 eV, such as BaZrO3. In this work we propose two novel materials to be added to the family of UWBG semiconductors: Ba2CaTeO6 exhibiting a double perovskite structure and Ba2K2Te2O9 with a triple perovskite structure. Using first principles hybrid functional calculations we predict the bandgaps of all the studied systems to be above 4.5 eV with str…

Empa–Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology(瑞士联邦材料科学与技术研究院)
Lattice distortion due to octahedral rotation and distortion are high focussed, and it produces profound effect on a material's properties, such as its bandgap, magnetism and optical properties etc. Rutile-type \b{eta}-MnO2 is a wide used non-Perovskite magnetic material with octahedrons. We systematically studied its stability, electronic structures, magnetic structures, and optical properties within 0-100 GPa with density-functional theory (DFT). We find that the competition between bondlength and bonding angle leads its bandgap enlarging or shrinking within in the Pnnm phase with increasing…
Metal halide perovskites are attracting tremendous interest for a variety of optoelectronic applications. The ability to tune the perovskite bandgap by tweaking the chemical compositions opens up new applications as coloured emitters and as components of tandem photovoltaics. Nevertheless, non-radiative losses are still limiting performance, with luminescence yields in state-of-the-art perovskite solar cells still far from 100% under solar illumination conditions. Furthermore, in mixed halide perovskite systems designed for continuous bandgap tunability (bandgaps ~1.7-1.9 eV), photo-induced io…
Recently, layered hybrid perovskites have been attracting huge interest due to a wide range of possible chemical compositions and the resulting tunability of the materials properties. In this study, we investigate the effect of the chain length of the organic ligands on the optical properties of stacks of two dimensional perovskite layers consisting of alkylammonium lead iodide (CnH2n+1NH3)2PbI4 with n=4-18. Photoluminescence and absorption spectroscopy reveal a blueshift with increasing chain length n including a jump of 110 meV between the n=10 and n=12 ligands due to a change in octahedral …
Three-dimensional lead halide perovskites have surprised people for their defect-tolerant electronic and optical properties, two-dimensional lead halide layered structures exhibit even more puzzling phenomena: luminescent edge states in Ruddlesden-Popper perovskites and conflicting reports of highly luminescent versus non-emissive CsPb$_{\text{2}}$Br$_{\text{5}}$. In this work, we report the observation of bright luminescent surface states on the edges of CsPb$_{\text{2}}$Br$_{\text{5}}$ microplatelets. We prove that green surface emission makes wide-bandgap single crystal CsPb$_{\text{2}}$Br$…
Complex quantum coupling phenomena of halide perovskites are examined through ab-initio calculations and exact diagonalization of model Hamiltonians to formulate a set of fundamental guiding rules to engineer the bandgap through strain. The bandgap tuning in halides is crucial for photovoltaic applications and for establishing non-trivial electronic states. Using CsSnI$_3$ as the prototype material, we show that in the cubic phase, the bandgap reduces irrespective of the nature of strain. However, for the tetragonal phase, it reduces with tensile strain and increases with compressive strain, w…
We report high-pressure photoluminescence, Raman scattering, and x-ray diffraction measurements on a lead-free halide perovskite $Cs_3Sb_2Br_9$. At about 3 GPa, an electronic transition manifests itself through a broad minimum in linewidth, a maximum in the intensity of $E_g$, $A_{1g}$ Raman modes, and the unusual change in the $c/a$ ratio of the trigonal lattice. The large compressibility and observed Raman anomalies indicate to a soft material with strong electron-phonon coupling. The observed below bandgap broadband emission in the photoluminescence measurement indicates the recombination o…
Transition metal perovskite chalcogenides (TMPCs) are explored as stable, environmentally friendly semiconductors for solar energy conversion. They can be viewed as the inorganic alternatives to hybrid halide perovskites, and chalcogenide counterparts of perovskite oxides with desirable optoelectronic properties in the visible and infrared part of the electromagnetic spectrum. Past theoretical studies have predicted large absorption coefficient, desirable defect characteristics, and bulk photovoltaic effect in TMPCs. Despite recent progresses in polycrystalline synthesis and measurements of th…
Metal halide perovskites APbX3 (A+ = FA+ (formamidinium), MA+ (methylammonium) or Cs+, X- = I-, Br-) are considered as prominent innovative components in nowadays perovskite solar cells. Crystallization of these materials is often complicated by the formation of various phases with the same stoichiometry but structural types deviating from perovskites such as well-known the hexagonal delta FAPbI3 polytype. Such phases are rarely placed in the focus of device engineering due to their unattractive optoelectronic properties while they are, indeed, highly important because they influence on the op…
Perovskite semiconductors have demonstrated outstanding external luminescence quantum yields, enabling high power conversion efficiencies (PCE). However, the precise conditions to advance to an efficiency regime above monocrystalline silicon cells are not well understood. Here, we establish a simulation model that well describes efficient p-i-n type perovskite solar cells and a range of different experiments. We then study important device and material parameters and we find that an efficiency regime of 30% can be unlocked by optimizing the built-in potential across the perovskite layer by usi…
Structural stability, electronic structure and optical properties of CH3NH3BaI3 hybrid perovskite is examined both from theory as well as experiment. Solution-processed thin films of CH3NH3BaI3 exhibited a high band gap of approximately 3.87 eV, which is in excellent agreement with the theoretical estimate of 4 eV. Also, the XRD patterns of the thin films match well with the l-peaks of the simulated pattern obtained from the relaxed unit cell of CH3NH3BaI3, crystallizing in the I4/mcm space group, with lattice parameters, a = 9.30 A, c = 13.94 A. Atom projected density of state and band struct…
Through model Hamiltonian studies and first-principle electronic structure calculations, we have examined the effect of inversion symmetry breaking (ISB) field and hydrostatic pressure on the band topology of halide perovskites by taking MAPbI$_3$ as a prototype. Our study shows that while hydrostatic pressure induces normal to topological insulator continuous phase transition, the ISB field makes it first order. The pressure smoothly reduces the normal bandgap, and without ISB, the system achieves a gapless state before it produces a non-trivial bandgap with inverted characters. The ISB field…
Presented in this work are the results of our study of the photoelectric properties of perovskite $CH_3NH_3PbI_{2.98}Cl_{0.02}$ films deposited on a glass substrate using the spin-coating method. The unit cell parameters of the perovskite are determined using x-ray diffractometry. It is shown that the film morphology represents a net of non-oriented needle-like structures with significant roughness and porosity. In order to investigate the properties of the films obtained, non-contact methods were used, such as transmission and reflection measurements and the measurements of the spectral chara…
The spin-split indirect bandgap in hybrid-halide perovskites provides a momentum-space realisation of a photon-ratchet intermediate band. Excited electrons thermalise to recombination-protected Rashba pockets offset in momentum space, building up the charge density to have sufficient flux to the higher lying conduction band. This effect could be used to form an intrinsic intermediate band solar cell with efficiencies beyond the Shockley-Queisser limit if a selective low-electron affinity contact can be made to the higher conduction state. This concept is supported by analysis of the many-body …
Recently, direct bandgap double perovskites are becoming more popular among photovoltaic research community owing to their potential to address issues of lead (Pb) toxicity and structural instability inherent in lead halide (simple) perovskites. In this study, In-Ag based direct bandgap double perovskite, Cs2AgInCl6 (CAIC), is treated with transition metal doping to improve the optoelectronic properties of the material. Investigations of structural and optoelectronic properties of Cu-doped CAIC, Cs2Ag(1-x)CuxInCl6, are done using ab-initio calculations with density functional theory (DFT) and …
Non-toxicity and stability make two-dimensional (2D) bismuth halide perovskites better alternatives to lead-based ones for optoelectronic applications and catalysis. In this work, we synthesize sub-micron size colloidal quasi-2D Cs3Bi2I9 perovskite nanosheets and study their generation and relaxation of charge carriers. Steady-state absorption spectroscopy reveals an indirect bandgap of 2.07 eV, which is supported by the density functional theory calculated band structure. The nanosheets do not show detectable photoluminescence at room temperature at band-edge excitation which is attributed to…
Perovskite yttrium tantalum oxynitride is theoretically proposed as a promising semiconductor for solar water splitting because of the predicted bandgap and energy positions of band edges. In experiment, however, we show here that depending on processing parameters, yttrium tantalum oxynitrides exist in multiphases, including the desired perovskite YTaON2, defect fluorite YTa(O,N,o)4, and N-doped YTaO4. These multiphases have bandgaps ranging between 2.13 and 2.31 eV, all responsive to visible light. The N-doped YTaO4, perovskite main phase, and fluorite main phase derived from crystalline fer…
Corner-shared ABX$_3$ perovskites have long featured prominently in solid-state chemistry and condensed matter physics. Still, the joint understanding of their two main subgroups-halides and oxides-has not been fully developed. Indeed, unlike the case that compounds having a single repeated motif ("monomorphous"), certain cubic perovskites can manifest a non-thermal distribution of local motifs ("polymorphous networks"). Such intrinsic deformations can include positional degrees of freedom. Unlike thermal motion, such intrinsic distortions do not time-average to zero. The present study compare…
Using nanoprobe X-ray diffraction microscopy, we investigate the relationship between residual strains from crystal growth in CsPbBr$_3$ thin film crystals, their stability, and local bandgap. We find that out-of-plane compressive strain that arises from cooldown from crystallization is detrimental to material stability under X-ray irradiation. We also find that the optical photoluminescence red shifts as a result of the out-of-plane compressive strain. The sensitivity of bandgap to strain suggests possible applications such as stress-sensitive sensors. Mosaicity, the formation of small misori…

More recent efforts show that the reduction from three- to two-dimensions (2D) of organic-inorganic halide perovskites promises an exciting opportunity to tune their electronic properties. Here, we explore the effect of reduced dimensionality and heterostructure engineering on the intrinsic material properties, such as energy stability, bandgap and transport properties of 2D hybrid organic-inorganic halide perovskites using first-pr…

The ultrafast polarization response to incident light and ensuing exciton/carrier generation are essential to outstanding optoelectronic properties of lead halide perovskites (LHPs). A large number of mechanistic studies in the LHP field to date have focused on contributions to polarizability from organic cations and the highly polarizable inorganic lattice. For a comprehensive understanding of the ultrafast polarization response, we must additionally account for the nearly instantaneous hyperpolarizability response to the propagating light field itself. While light propagation is pivotal to o…
Organometallic perovskite is one of the potential materials in the various optoelectronic research fields. This research work demonstrates the synthesis of CH3NH3PbI3-ZnS microrods via one-step spin coating for optoelectronic applications. Incorporation of ZnS in the perovskite material caused bandgap variation in the visible wavelength range.
Perovskite solar cells have shown power conversion efficiencies (PCE) comparable to cystalline silicon solar cell despite involving low-temperature, solution based synthesis processes outside clean room environment. As the theoretical PCE of a perovskite solar cell with band gap 1.55 eV is capped to 33 % due to Shockley-Queisser limit, tandem configurations are being investigated to go beyond this limit. Here, we propose a two-terminal (2T) tandem solar cell structure consisting of perovskite and multilayer transition metal dichalcogenide as the absorber layers of the top and the bottom subcel…
Inorganic metal-halide cubic perovskite semiconductors have become more popular in industrial applications of photovoltaic and optoelectronic devices. Among various perovskites, lead-free materials are currently most explored due to their non-toxic effect on the environment. In this study, the structural, electronic, optical, and mechanical properties of lead-free cubic perovskite materials FrBX3 (B = Ge, Sn; X = Cl, Br, I) are investigated through first-principles density-functional theory (DFT) calculations. These materials are found to exhibit semiconducting behavior with direct bandgap ene…
Large bandgap insulators are considered promising for applications such as photocatalysts, dielectric resonators and interference filters. Based on synchrotron X-ray diffraction, diffuse reflectance measurement and density functional theory, we report the crystal structure, optical response, and electronic properties of the synthesized $d^0$ double perovskite Ba$_2$ScTaO$_6$. In contrast to earlier prediction, the electronic bandgap is found to be large, $\sim 4.66$ eV. The optical response is characterized by the presence of multiple exciton modes extending up to the visible range. A detailed…
The effect of 14 organic cations on the optical properties of the lead iodine perovskite is analyzed. The electronic and optical properties are obtained using first principles. The absorption coefficients are split into inter-atomic species components in order to quantify all of the contributions. For energies close to the bandgaps, the main contribution is from the Pb-Pb intra-species transitions. For higher energy this contribution is still important in addition to I-I and Pb-I contributions, and to the 3 and 4 species term. Almost all absorption properties are qualitatively similar. Further…
We report nanoscale bandgap engineering via a local strain across the inhomogeneous ferroelectric interface, which is controlled by the visible-light-excited probe voltage. Switchable photovolatic effects and the spectral response of the photocurrent were explore to illustrate the reversible bandgap variation (~0.3eV). This local-strain-engineered bandgap has been further revealed by in situ probe-voltage-assisted valence electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS). Phase-field simulations and first-principle calculations were also employed for illustration of the large local strain and the bandg…

Discovery of Stable Hybrid Organic-inorganic Double Perovskites for High-performance Solar Cells via Machine-learning Algorithms and Crystal Graph Convolution Neural Network Method
The halide perovskites have truly emerged as efficient optoelectronic materials and show the promise of exhibiting nontrivial topological phases. Since the bandgap is the deterministic factor for these quantum phases, here we present a comprehensive electronic structure study using first-principle methods by considering nine inorganic halide perovskites CsBX$_3$ (B = Ge, Sn, Pb; X = Cl, Br, I) in their three structural polymorphs (cubic, tetragonal and orthorhombic). A series of exchange-correlations (XC) functionals are examined towards accurate estimation of the bandgap. Furthermore, while t…
The radiative recombination of injected charge carriers gives rise to electroluminescence (EL), a central process for light-emitting diode (LED) operation. It is often presumed in some emerging fields of optoelectronics, including perovskite and organic LEDs, that the minimum voltage required for light emission is the semiconductor bandgap divided by the elementary charge. Here we show for many classes of LEDs, including those based on metal halide perovskite, organic, chalcogenide quantum-dot and commercial III-V semiconductors, photon emission can be generally observed at record-low driving …
