We analyze an inverse problem associated with the time-harmonic Rayleigh system on a flat elastic half-space concerning the recovery of Lamé parameters in a slab beneath a traction-free surface. We employ the Markushevich substitution, while the data are captured in a Jost function, and point out parallels with a corresponding problem for the Schrödinger equation. The Jost function can be identified with spectral data. We derive a Gel'fand-Levitan type equation and obtain uniqueness with two distinct frequencies.
We analyze the inverse spectral problem on the half line associated with elastic surface waves. Here, we extend the treatment of Love waves [arXiv: 1908.10529] to Rayleigh waves. Under certain conditions, and assuming that the Poisson ratio is constant, we establish uniqueness and present a reconstruction scheme for the S-wave speed with multiple wells from the semiclassical spectrum of these waves.
In recent years, much attention has been paid to the study of forward and inverse problems for the Rayleigh-Stokes equation in connection with the importance of this equation for applications. This equation plays an important role, in particular, in the study of the behavior of certain non-Newtonian fluids. The equation includes a fractional derivative of order $α$, which is used to describe the viscoelastic behavior of the flow. In this paper, we study the behavior of the solution of such equations depending on the parameter $α$. In particular, it is proved that for sufficiently large $t$ the…
We are concerned with the initial value problem governed by generalized Rayleigh-Stokes equations, where the nonlinearity depends on history states and takes values in Hilbert scales of negative order. The solvability and Hölder regularity of solutions are proved by using fixed point arguments and embeddings of fractional Sobolev spaces. An application to a related inverse source problem is given.
The linear instability study of the viscous Rayleigh-Taylor model in the neighborhood of a laminar smooth increasing density profile $ρ_0(x_3)$ amounts to the study of the following ordinary differential equation of order 4: \begin{equation}\label{MainEq} -λ^2 [ ρ_0 k^2 ϕ- (ρ_0 ϕ')'] = λμ(ϕ^{(4)} - 2k^2 ϕ" + k^4 ϕ) - gk^2 ρ_0'ϕ, \end{equation} where $λ$ is the growth rate in time, $k$ is the wave number transverse to the density profile. In the case of $ρ'_0\geq 0$ compactly supported, we provide a spectral analysis showing that in accordance with the results of \cite{HL03}, there is an infini…
We establish a relationship between an inverse optimization spectral problem for N-dimensional Schrödinger equation $ -Δψ+qψ=λψ$ and a solution of the nonlinear boundary value problem $-Δu+q_0 u=λu- u^{γ-1},~~u>0,~~ u|_{\partial Ω}=0$. Using this relationship, we find an exact solution for the inverse optimization spectral problem, investigate its stability and obtain new results on the existence and uniqueness of the solution for the nonlinear boundary value problem.
We prove the existence of a unique unstable strong solution in the sense of $L^1$-norm for an abstract Rayleigh--Taylor (RT) problem arising from stratified viscous fluids in Lagrangian coordinates based on a bootstrap instability method. In the proof, we develop a method to modify the initial data of the linearized abstract RT problem based on an existence theory of unique solution of stratified (steady) Stokes problem and an iterative technique, so that the obtained modified initial data satisfy necessary compatibility conditions of the (original) abstract RT problem. Applying an inverse tra…
A nonlocal boundary value problem for the fractional version of the well known in fluid dynamics Rayleigh-Stokes equation is studied. Namely, the condition $u(x,T)=βu(x,0)+φ(x)$, where $β$ is an arbitrary real number, is proposed instead of the initial condition. If $β=0$, then we get the inverse problem in time, called the backward problem. It is well known that the backward problem is ill-posed in the sense of Hadamard. If $β=1$, then the corresponding non-local problem becomes well-posed in the sense of Hadamard, and moreover, in this case a coercive estimate for the solution can be establi…
This paper is devoted to an inverse Steklov problem for a particular class of n-dimensional manifolds having the topology of a hollow sphere and equipped with a warped product metric. We prove that the knowledge of the Steklov spectrum determines uniquely the associated warping function up to a natural invariance.
Construction of the solution of the inverse spectral problem for a system depending rationally on the spectral parameter, Borg-Marchenko-type theorem, and sine-Gordon equation
We analyze the inverse spectral problem on the half line associated with elastic surface waves. Here, we focus on Love waves. Under certain generic conditions, we establish uniqueness and present a reconstruction scheme for the S- wavespeed with multiple wells from the semiclassical spectrum of these waves.
In this paper, we consider the numerical approximation of the Steklov eigenvalue problem that arises in inverse acoustic scattering. The underlying scattering problem is for an inhomogeneous isotropic medium. These eigenvalues have been proposed to be used as a target signature since they can be recovered from the scattering data. A Galerkin method is studied where the basis functions are the Neumann eigenfunctions of the Laplacian. Error estimates for the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions are proven by appealing to Weyl's Law. We will test this method against separation of variables in order to …
