The linear instability study of the viscous Rayleigh-Taylor model in the neighborhood of a laminar smooth increasing density profile $ρ_0(x_3)$ amounts to the study of the following ordinary differential equation of order 4: \begin{equation}\label{MainEq} -λ^2 [ ρ_0 k^2 ϕ- (ρ_0 ϕ')'] = λμ(ϕ^{(4)} - 2k^2 ϕ" + k^4 ϕ) - gk^2 ρ_0'ϕ, \end{equation} where $λ$ is the growth rate in time, $k$ is the wave number transverse to the density profile.
In the case of $ρ'_0\geq 0$ compactly supported, we provide a spectral analysis showing that in accordance with the results of \cite{HL03}, there is an infinite sequence of non trivial solutions $(λ_n, ϕ_n)$, with $λ_n\rightarrow 0$ when $n\rightarrow +\infty$ and $ϕ_n\in H^4(\mathbf{R})$. In the more general case where $ρ_0'>0$ everywhere and $ρ_0$ converges at $\pm\infty$ to finite limits $ρ_{\pm}>0$, we prove that there exist finitely non trivial solutions $(λ_n, ϕ_n)$. The line of investigation is to reduce both cases to the study of an operator on a compact set.
In this paper we prove the existence of water waves with sign-changing Taylor sign coefficients, that is, the strong Taylor sign holds initially, while breaks down at a later time, and vice versa. Such a phenomenon can be regarded as the transition between the stable and unstable regime in the sense of Rayleigh-Taylor of water waves. As a byproduct, we prove the sharp wellposedness of 2d water waves in Gevrey-2 spaces.
The Muskat problem models the evolution of the interface given by two different fluids in porous media. The Rayleigh-Taylor condition is natural to reach the linear stability of the Muskat problem. We show that the Rayleigh-Taylor condition may hold initially but break down in finite time. As a consequence of the method used, we prove the existence of water waves turning.
We study the stability of the system of the Euler equation in the neighborhood of a stationary profile associated with the quasi isobaric model in a gravity field. This stationary profile is not bounded below, hence the operator is not coercive. We use this linear result to deduce a nonlinear result
This paper is concerned with the Rayleigh-Taylor instability for the nonhomogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with Navier-slip boundary conditions around a steady-state in an infinite slab, where the Navier-slip coefficients do not have defined sign and the slab is horizontally periodic. Motivated by [18], we extend the result from Dirichlet boundary condition to Navier-slip boundary conditions. Our results indicate the factor that "heavier density with increasing height" still plays a key role in the instability under Navier-slip boundary conditions.
The two-phase free boundary problem with surface tension and downforce gravity for the Navier-Stokes system is considered in a situation where the initial interface is close to equilibrium. The boundary symbol of this problem admits zeros in the unstable halfplane in case the heavy fluid is on top of the light one, which leads to the well-known Rayleigh-Taylor instability. Instability is proved rigorously in an $L_p$-setting by means of an abstract instability result due to Henry.
We construct analytic solutions to the Euler equations with an interface between two fluids, extending work of Duchon and Robert. We also show that the estimates of Duchon and Robert yield global analytic solutions to the Muskat problem with small initial data.
We consider a free boundary problem for the axially symmetric incompressible ideal magnetohydrodynamic equations that describes the motion of the plasma in vacuum. Both the plasma magnetic field and vacuum magnetic field are tangent along the plasma-vacuum interface. Moreover, the vacuum magnetic field is composed in a non-simply connected domain and hence is non-trivial. Under the Rayleigh-Taylor sign condition on the free surface, we prove the local well-posedness of the problem in Sobolev spaces. Furthermore, we also prove the local well-posdeness under a more general "stability" assumption…
We consider the free boundary problem for two layers of immiscible, viscous, incompressible fluid in a uniform gravitational field, lying above a rigid bottom in a three-dimensional horizontally periodic setting. The effect of surface tension is either taken into account at both free boundaries or neglected at both. We are concerned with the Rayleigh-Taylor instability, so we assume that the upper fluid is heavier than the lower fluid. When the surface tension at the free internal interface is below a critical value, which we identify, we establish that the problem under consideration is nonli…
In this note we revisit the classical subject of the Rayleigh-Taylor instability in presence of an incompressible background shear flow. We derive a formula for the essential spectral radius of the evolution group generated by the linearization near the steady state and reveal that the velocity variations neutralize shortwave instabilities. The formula is a direct generalization of the result of H. J. Hwang and Y. Guo in the hydrostatic case \cite{HG}. Furthermore, we construct a class of steady states which posses unstable discrete spectrum with neutral essential spectrum. The technique invol…
In [F. Jiang, S. Jiang, On instability and stability of three-dimensional gravity driven viscous flows in a bounded domain, Adv. Math., 264 (2014) 831--863], Jiang et.al. investigated the instability of Rayleigh--Taylor steady-state of a three-dimensional nonhomogeneous incompressible viscous flow driven by gravity in a bounded domain $Ω$ of class $C^2$. In particular, they proved the steady-state is nonlinearly unstable under a restrictive condition of that the derivative function of steady density possesses a positive lower bound. In this article, by exploiting a standard energy functional a…
Isothermal compressible two-phase flows in a capillary are modeled with and without phase transition in the presence of gravity, employing Darcy's law for the velocity field. It is shown that the resulting systems are thermodynamically consistent in the sense that the available energy is a strict Lyapunov functional. In both cases, the equilibria with flat interface are identified. It is shown that the problems are well-posed in an $L_p$-setting and generate local semiflows in the proper state manifolds. The main result concerns the stability of equilibria with flat interface, i.e. the Rayleig…
In this article we consider the inhomogeneous incompressible Euler equations describing two fluids with different constant densities under the influence of gravity as a differential inclusion. By considering the relaxation of the constitutive laws we formulate a general criterion for the existence of infinitely many weak solutions which reflect the turbulent mixing of the two fluids. Our criterion can be verified in the case that initially the fluids are at rest and separated by a flat interface with the heavier one being above the lighter one - the classical configuration giving rise to the R…
We consider the Rayleigh-Taylor problem for two compressible, immiscible, inviscid, barotropic fluids evolving with a free interface in the presence of a uniform gravitational field. After constructing Rayleigh-Taylor steady-state solutions with a denser fluid lying above the free interface with the second fluid, we turn to an analysis of the equations obtained from linearizing around such a steady state. By a natural variational approach, we construct normal mode solutions that grow exponentially in time with rate like $e^{t \sqrt{\absξ}}$, where $ξ$ is the spatial frequency of the normal mod…
This paper concerns the dynamics of two layers of compressible, barotropic, viscous fluid lying atop one another. The lower fluid is bounded below by a rigid bottom, and the upper fluid is bounded above by a trivial fluid of constant pressure. This is a free boundary problem: the interfaces between the fluids and above the upper fluid are free to move. The fluids are acted on by gravity in the bulk, and at the free interfaces we consider both the case of surface tension and the case of no surface forces. We are concerned with the Rayleigh-Taylor instability when the upper fluid is heavier than…
In this paper we consider the evolution of two fluid phases in a porous medium. The fluids are separated from each other and also the wetting phase from air by interfaces which evolve in time. We reduce the problem to an abstract evolution equation. A generalised Rayleigh-Taylor condition characterizes the parabolicity regime of the problem and allows us to establish a general well-posedness result and to study stability properties of flat steady-states. When considering surface tension effects at the interface between the fluids and if the more dense fluid lies above, we find bifurcating fing…
This article is concerned with the dynamic behaviour of two immiscible and incompressible fluids in a cylindrical domain, which are separated by a sharp interface. In case that the heavy fluid is situated on top of the light fluid, one expects that the fluid on top sags down into the lower phase. This effect is known as the Rayleigh-Taylor-Instability. We present a rather complete analysis of the corresponding free boundary problem which involves a contact angle. Our main result implies the existence of a critical surface tension with the following property. In case that the surface tension of…
We prove the existence of a unique unstable strong solution in the sense of $L^1$-norm for an abstract Rayleigh--Taylor (RT) problem arising from stratified viscous fluids in Lagrangian coordinates based on a bootstrap instability method. In the proof, we develop a method to modify the initial data of the linearized abstract RT problem based on an existence theory of unique solution of stratified (steady) Stokes problem and an iterative technique, so that the obtained modified initial data satisfy necessary compatibility conditions of the (original) abstract RT problem. Applying an inverse tra…
We study the equations obtained from linearizing the compressible Navier-Stokes equations around a steady-state profile with a heavier fluid lying above a lighter fluid along a planar interface, i.e. a Rayleigh-Taylor instability. We consider the equations with or without surface tension, with the viscosity allowed to depend on the density, and in both periodic and non-periodic settings. In the presence of viscosity there is no natural variational framework for constructing growing mode solutions to the linearized problem. We develop a general method of studying a family of modified variationa…
We investigate the nonlinear instability of a smooth Rayleigh-Taylor steady-state solution (including the case of heavier density with increasing height) to the three-dimensional incompressible nonhomogeneous magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations of zero resistivity in the presence of a uniform gravitational field. We first analyze the linearized equations around the steady-state solution. Then we construct solutions of the linearized problem that grow in time in the Sobolev space $H^k$, thus leading to the linear instability. With the help of the constructed unstable solutions of the linearized…
We consider the evolution of two incompressible fluids with homogeneous densities $ρ_-<ρ_+$ subject to gravity described by the inviscid Boussinesq equations and provide the explicit relaxation of the associated differential inclusion. The existence of a subsolution to the relaxation allows one to conclude the existence of turbulently mixing solutions to the original Boussinesq system. As a specific application we investigate subsolutions emanating from the classical Rayleigh-Taylor initial configuration where the two fluids are separated by a horizontal interface with the heavier fluid being …
It is still an open problem whether the inhibition phenomenon of Rayleigh--Taylor (RT) instability by horizontal magnetic field can be mathematically proved in a non-resistive magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) fluid in a two-dimensional (2D) horizontal slab domain, since it had been roughly verified by a 2D linearized motion equations in 2012 \cite{WYC}. In this paper, we find that this inhibition phenomenon can be rigorously verified in the inhomogeneous, incompressible, inviscid case with velocity damping. More precisely, there exists a critical number $m_{\rm{C}}$ such that if the strength $|m|$ of…
In this paper, we are interested in the nonlinear Rayleigh-Taylor instability for the gravity-driven incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with Navier-slip boundary conditions around a smooth increasing density profile $ρ_0(x_2)$ in a slab domain $2πL\mathbb{T} \times (-1,1)$ ($L>0$, $\mathbb{T}$ is the usual 1D torus). The linear instability study of the viscous Rayleigh-Taylor model amounts to the study of the following ODE on the finite interval $(-1,1)$, \begin{equation}\label{EqMain} λ^2 ( ρ_0 k^2 ϕ- (ρ_0 ϕ')')+ λμ(ϕ^{(4)} - 2k^2 ϕ'' + k^4 ϕ) = gk^2 ρ_0'ϕ, \end{equation} with the boundar…
We investigate the stabilizing effects of the magnetic fields in the linearized magnetic Rayleigh-Taylor (RT) problem of a nonhomogeneous incompressible viscous magnetohydrodynamic fluid of zero resistivity in the presence of a uniform gravitational field in a three-dimensional bounded domain, in which the velocity of the fluid is non-slip on the boundary. By adapting a modified variational method and careful deriving \emph{a priori} estimates, we establish a criterion for the instability/stability of the linearized problem around a magnetic RT equilibrium state. In the criterion, we find a ne…
In this paper, we investigate the Rayleigh-Taylor instability problem for two compressible, immiscible, inviscid flows rotating with an constant angular velocity, and evolving with a free interface in the presence of a uniform gravitational field. First we construct the Rayleigh-Taylor steady-state solutions with a denser fluid lying above the free interface with the second fluid, then we turn to an analysis of the equations obtained from linearization around such a steady state. In the presence of uniform rotation, there is no natural variational framework for constructing growing mode soluti…
We reformulate in Lagrangian coordinates the two-phase free boundary problem for the equations of Magnetohydrodynamics in a infinite slab, which is incompressible, viscous and of zero resistivity, as one for the Navier-Stokes equations with a force term induced by the fluid flow map. We study the stabilized effect of the magnetic field for the linearized equations around the steady-state solution by assuming that the upper fluid is heavier than the lower fluid, $i. e.$, the linear Rayleigh-Taylor instability. We identity the critical magnetic number $|B|_c$ by a variational problem. For the ca…
It is still open whether the phenomenon of inhibition of Rayleigh--Taylor (RT) instability by a horizontal magnetic field can be mathematically verified for a non-resistive \emph{viscous} magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) fluid in a two-dimensional (2D) horizontal slab domain, since it was roughly proved in the linearized case by Wang in \cite{WYC}. In this paper, we prove such inhibition phenomenon by the (nonlinear) inhomogeneous, incompressible, \emph{viscous case} with \emph{Navier (slip) boundary condition}. More precisely, we show that there is a critical number of field strength $m_{\mm{C}}$, s…
We study the Rayleigh-Taylor problem for two incompressible, immiscible, viscous magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flows, with zero resistivity, surface tension (or without surface tenstion) and special initial magnetic field, evolving with a free interface in the presence of a uniform gravitational field. First, we reformulate in Lagrangian coordinates MHD equations in a infinite slab as one for the Navier-Stokes equations with a force term induced by the fluid flow map. Then we analyze the linearized problem around the steady state which describes a denser immiscible fluid lying above a light one wi…
