Characterizing the entanglement of matrix degrees of freedom is essential for understanding the holographic emergence of spacetime. The Quantum Hall Matrix Model is a gauged $U(N)$ matrix quantum mechanics with two matrices whose ground state is known exactly and describes an emergent spatial disk with incompressible bulk dynamics. We define and compute an entanglement entropy in the ground state associated to a cut through the disk. There are two contributions. A collective field describing the eigenvalues of one of the matrices gives a gauge-invariant chiral boundary mode leading to an expected logarithmic entanglement entropy. Further, the cut through the bulk splits certain 'off-diagonal' matrix elements that must be duplicated and associated to both sides of the cut. Sewing these duplicated modes together in a gauge-invariant way leads to a bulk 'area law' contribution to the entanglement entropy. All of these entropies are regularized by finite $N$.
We compute directly the entanglement entropy of spatial regions in Chern-Simons gauge theories in 2+1 dimensions using surgery. We use these results to determine the universal topological piece of the entanglement entropy for Abelian and non-Abelian quantum Hall fluids.
We study the real-space entanglement spectrum for fractional quantum Hall systems, which maintains locality along the spatial cut, and provide evidence that it possesses a scaling property. We also consider the closely-related particle entanglement spectrum, and carry out the Schmidt decomposition of the Laughlin state analytically at large size.
We study the full counting statistics (FCS) and symmetry-resolved entanglement entropies of integer and fractional quantum Hall states. For the filled lowest Landau level of spin-polarized electrons on an infinite cylinder, we compute exactly the charged moments associated with a cut orthogonal to the cylinder's axis. This yields the behavior of FCS and entropies in the limit of large perimeters: in a suitable range of fluctuations, FCS is Gaussian and entanglement spreads evenly among different charge sectors. Subleading charge-dependent corrections to equipartition are also derived. We then …
I give a brief review of higher dimensional quantum Hall effect (QHE) and how one can use a general framework to describe the lowest Landau level dynamics as a noncommutative field theory whose semiclassical limit leads to anomaly free bulk-edge effective actions in any dimension. I then present the case of QHE on complex projective spaces and focus on the entanglement entropy for integer QHE in even spatial dimensions. In the case of $ν=1$, a semiclassical analysis shows that the entanglement entropy is proportional to the phase-space area of the entangling surface with a universal overall co…
We investigate the condensate mechanism of the low-lying excitations in the matrix models of 4-dimensional quantum Hall fluids recently proposed by us. It is shown that there exist some hierarchies of 4-dimensional quantum Hall fluid states in the matrix models, and they are similar to the Haldane's hierarchy in the 2-dimensional quantum Hall fluids. However, these hierarchical fluid states appear consistently in our matrix models without any requirement of modifications of the matrix models.
In this paper, we calculate the topological entanglement entropy of the BTZ black hole and find that it coincides with that for fractional quantum Hall state. So the BTZ black holes have the same topological order with the fractional quantum Hall state. This fact indicate that the BTZ black holes have long-range entanglement.
We revisit a model for gapped fractonic order in (2+1) dimensions (a symmetric-traceless tensor gauge theory with conservation of dipole and trace-quadrupole moments described in \cite{Prem:2017kxc}) and compute its ground-state entanglement entropy on $\mathbb R^2$. Along the way, we quantize the theory on open subsets of $\mathbb R^2$ which gives rise to gapless edge excitations that are Lifshitz-type scalar theories. We additionally explore varieties of gauge-invariant extended operators and rephrase the fractonic physics in terms of the local deformability of these operators. We explore si…
We study the quantum entanglement structure of integer quantum Hall states via the reduced density matrix of spatial subregions. In particular, we examine the eigenstates, spectrum and entanglement entropy (EE) of the density matrix for various ground and excited states, with or without mass anisotropy. We focus on an important class of regions that contain sharp corners or cusps, leading to a geometric angle-dependent contribution to the EE. We unravel surprising relations by comparing this corner term at different fillings. We further find that the corner term, when properly normalized, has …
We analyze some features of the entanglement entropy for an integer quantum Hall state ($ν=1 $) in comparison with ideas from relativistic field theory and noncommutative geometry. The spectrum of the modular operator, for a restricted class of states, is shown to be similar to the case of field theory or a type ${\rm III}_1$ von Neumann algebra. We present arguments that the main part of the dependence of the entanglement entropy on background fields and geometric data such as the spin connection is given by a generalized Chern-Simons form. Implications of this result for bringing together id…

We analyze the entanglement entropy, in real space, for the higher dimensional integer quantum Hall effect on ${\mathbb {CP}}^k$ (any even dimension) for abelian and nonabelian magnetic background fields. In the case of $ν=1$ we perform a semiclassical calculation which gives the entropy as proportional to the phase-space area. This exhibits a certain universality in the sense that the proportionality constant is the same for any dimension and for any background, abelian or nonabelian. We also point out some distinct features in the profiles of the eigenfunctions of the two-point correlator th…
Based on Haldane's spherical geometrical formalism of two-dimensional quantum Hall fluids, the relation between the noncommutative geometry of $S^2$ and the two-dimensional quantum Hall fluids is exhibited. If the number of particles $N$ is infinitely large, two-dimensional quantum Hall physics can be precisely described in terms of the noncommutative U(1) Chern-Simons theory proposed by Susskind, like in the case of plane. However, for the finite number of particles on two-sphere, the matrix-regularized version of noncommutative U(1) Chern-Simons theory involves in spinor oscillators. We esta…
In the setting of the Berenstein-Maldacena-Nastase Matrix theory, dual to light-cone M-theory in a PP-wave background, we compute the Von Neumann entanglement entropy between a probe giant graviton and a source. We demonstrate that this entanglement entropy is directly and generally related to the local tidal acceleration experienced by the probe. This establishes a new map between local spacetime geometry and quantum entanglement, suggesting a mechanism through which geometry emerges from Matrix quantum mechanics. We extend this setting to light-cone M-theory in flat space, or the Banks-Fisch…
The critical theories for the topological phase transitions of integer quantum Hall states to a trivial insulating state with the same symmetry can be obtained by calculating the ground state entanglement spectrum under a symmetric checkerboard bipartition. In contrast to the gapless edge excitations under the left-right bipartition, a quantum network with bulk gapless excitations naturally emerges at the Brillouin zone center without fine tuning. On a large finite lattice, the resulting critical theory for the $ν=1$ state is the (2+1) dimensional relativistic quantum field theory characterize…
A half-BPS circular Wilson loop in $\mathcal{N}=4$ $SU(N)$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in an arbitrary representation is described by a Gaussian matrix model with a particular insertion. The additional entanglement entropy of a spherical region in the presence of such a loop was recently computed by Lewkowycz and Maldacena using exact matrix model results. In this note we utilize the supergravity solutions that are dual to such Wilson loops in a representation with order $N^2$ boxes to calculate this entropy holographically. Employing the matrix model results of Gomis, Matsuura, Okuda and…
The Bures-Hall distance metric between quantum states is a unique measure that satisfies various useful properties for quantum information processing. In this work, we study the statistical behavior of quantum entanglement over the Bures-Hall ensemble as measured by von Neumann entropy. The average von Neumann entropy over such an ensemble has been recently obtained, whereas the main result of this work is an explicit expression of the corresponding variance that specifies the fluctuation around its average. The starting point of the calculations is the connection between correlation functions…
Using Matrix theory, we propose a technique on how to compute the entangle- ment entropy between a supergravity probe and modes on a spherical membrane. We demonstrate that a membrane stretched between the probe and the sphere entangles these modes and can lead to an the entanglement entropy that encodes information about local gravitational geometry seen by the probe.
We give a brief review of quantum Hall effect in higher dimensions and its relation to fuzzy spaces. For a quantum Hall system, the lowest Landau level dynamics is given by a one-dimensional matrix action whose large $N$ limit produces an effective action describing the gauge interactions of a higher dimensional quantum Hall droplet. The bulk action is a Chern-Simons type term whose anomaly is exactly cancelled by the boundary action given in terms of a chiral, gauged Wess-Zumino-Witten theory suitably generalized to higher dimensions. We argue that the gauge fields in the Chern-Simons action …
We study the target space entanglement entropy in a complex matrix model that describes the chiral primary sector in $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory, which is associated with the bubbling AdS geometry. The target space for the matrix model is a two-dimensional plane where the eigenvalues of the complex matrix distribute. The eigenvalues are viewed as the position coordinates of fermions, and the eigenvalue distribution corresponds to a droplet formed by the fermions. The droplet is identified with one that specifies a boundary condition in the bubbling geometry. We consider states in t…
In the context of the Bank-Fishler-Shenker-Susskind Matrix theory, we analyze a spherical membrane in light-cone M theory along with two asymptotically distant probes. In the appropriate energy regime, we find that the membrane behaves like a smeared Matrix black hole; and the spacetime geometry seen by the probes can become non-commutative even far away from regions of Planckian curvature. This arises from non-linear Matrix interactions where fast matrix modes lift a flat direction in the potential -- akin to the Paul trap phenomenon in atomic physics. In the regime where we do have a notion …
It is believed that thermalization drives the reduced density matrix of a subsystem to approach a short-range entangled operator. If the initial state is also short-range entangled, it is possible that the reduced density matrix remains low-entangled throughout thermalization; or there could exist a barrier with high operator entanglement between the initial and thermalized reduced density matrix. In this paper, we study such dynamics in three classes of models: the rational CFTs, the random unitary circuit, and the holographic CFTs, representing systems of increasing quantum chaoticity. We sh…
Quantum Hall matrix models are simple, solvable quantum mechanical systems which capture the physics of certain fractional quantum Hall states. Recently, it was shown that the Hall viscosity can be extracted from the matrix model for Laughlin states. Here we extend this calculation to the matrix models for a class of non-Abelian quantum Hall states. These states, which were previously introduced by Blok and Wen, arise from the conformal blocks of Wess-Zumino-Witten conformal field theory models. We show that the Hall viscosity computed from the matrix model coincides with a result of Read, in …
We consider integer quantum Hall states and calculate bulk entanglement spectrum by formulating the correlation matrix in guiding center representation. Our analytical approach is based on the projection operator with redefining the inner product of states in Hilbert space to take care of the restriction imposed by the (rectangle-tiled) checkerboard partition. The resultant correlation matrix contains the coupling constants between states of different guiding centers parameterized by magnetic length and the period of partition. We find various band-crossings by tuning the flux $Φ$ threading ea…
Boundaries constitute a rich playground for quantum many-body systems because they can lead to novel degrees of freedom such as protected boundary states in topological phases. Here, we study the groundstate of integer quantum Hall systems in the presence of boundaries through the reduced density matrix of a spatial region. We work in the lowest Landau level and choose our region to intersect the boundary at arbitrary angles. The entanglement entropy (EE) contains a logarithmic contribution coming from the chiral edge modes, and matches the corresponding conformal field theory prediction. We u…
We propose two non-abelian Chern-Simons matrix models as the effective descriptions of 4-dimensional quantum Hall fluids. One of them describes a new type of 4-dimensional quantum Hall fluid on the space of quaternions, the other provides the description of non-commutative field theory for Zhang and Hu's 4-dimensional quantum Hall fluid of $S^4$. The complete sets of physical quantum states of these matrix models are determined, and the properties of quantum Hall fluids related with them are discussed.
We consider the trial wavefunctions for the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect (FQHE) that are given by conformal blocks, and construct their associated edge excited states in full generality. The inner products between these edge states are computed in the thermodynamic limit, assuming generalized screening (i.e. short-range correlations only) inside the quantum Hall droplet, and using the language of boundary conformal field theory (boundary CFT). These inner products take universal values in this limit: they are equal to the corresponding inner products in the bulk 2d chiral CFT which underlies…
We derive semiclassical ground state solutions that correspond to the quantum Hall states earlier found in the Maxwell-Chern-Simons matrix theory. They realize the Jain composite-fermion construction and their density is piecewise constant as that of phenomenological wave functions. These results support the matrix theory as a possible effective theory of the fractional Hall effect. A crucial role is played by the constraint limiting the degeneracy of matrix states: we find its explicit gauge invariant form and clarify its physical interpretation.
In gauge/gravity duality, matrix degrees of freedom on the gauge theory side play important roles for the emergent geometry. In this paper, we discuss how the entanglement on the gravity side can be described as the entanglement between matrix degrees of freedom. Our approach, which we call 'matrix entanglement', is different from 'target-space entanglement' proposed and discussed recently by several groups. We consider several classes of quantum states to which our approach can play important roles. When applied to fuzzy sphere, matrix entanglement can be used to define the usual spatial enta…
We show how to incorporate fractionally charged quasielectrons in the finite quantum Hall matrix model. The quasielectrons emerge as combinations of BPS solitons and quasiholes in a finite matrix version of the noncommutative $ϕ^4$ theory coupled to a noncommutative Chern-Simons gauge field. We also discuss how to properly define the charge density in the classical matrix model, and calculate density profiles for droplets, quasiholes and quasielectrons.
In this paper, we study $(2+1)$-dimensional quantum anomalous Hall states, i.e. band insulators with quantized Hall conductance, using the exact holographic mapping. The exact holographic mapping is an approach to holographic duality which maps the quantum anomalous Hall state to a different state living in $(3+1)$-dimensional hyperbolic space. By studying topological response properties and the entanglement spectrum, we demonstrate that the holographic dual theory of a quantum anomalous Hall state is a $(3+1)$-dimensional topological insulator. The dual description enables a new characterizat…
The U(N) Maxwell-Chern-Simons matrix gauge theory is proposed as an extension of Susskind's noncommutative approach. The theory describes D0-branes, nonrelativistic particles with matrix coordinates and gauge symmetry, that realize a matrix generalization of the quantum Hall effect. Matrix ground states obtained by suitable projections of higher Landau levels are found to be in one-to-one correspondence with the expected Laughlin and Jain hierarchical states. The Jain composite-fermion construction follows by gauge invariance via the Gauss law constraint. In the limit of commuting, ``normal'' …
The present understanding of nonperturbative ground states in the fractional quantum Hall effect is based on effective theories of the Jain "composite fermion" excitations. We review the approach based on matrix variables, i.e. D0 branes, originally introduced by Susskind and Polychronakos. We show that the Maxwell-Chern-Simons matrix gauge theory provides a matrix generalization of the quantum Hall effect, where the composite-fermion construction naturally follows from gauge invariance. The matrix ground states obtained by suitable projections of higher Landau levels are found to be in one-to…
We investigate the recently introduced geometric quench protocol for fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states within the framework of exactly solvable quantum Hall matrix models. In the geometric quench protocol a FQH state is subjected to a sudden change in the ambient geometry, which introduces anisotropy into the system. We formulate this quench in the matrix models and then we solve exactly for the post-quench dynamics of the system and the quantum fidelity (Loschmidt echo) of the post-quench state. Next, we explain how to define a spin-2 collective variable $\hat{g}_{ab}(t)$ in the matrix mod…
We study target space entanglement in gauged multi-matrix models as models of entanglement between groups of D-branes separated by a planar entangling surface, paying close attention to the implementation of gauge invariance. We open with a review of target space entanglement between identical particles, which shares some important features (specifically a gauged permutation symmetry) with our main problem. For our matrix models, we implement a gauge fixing well-adapted to the entangling surface. In this gauge, we map the matrix model problem to that of entanglement of a $U(1)$ gauge theory on…
We find that a gauged matrix model of rectangular fermionic matrices (a matrix version of the fermion harmonic oscillator) realizes a quantum hall droplet with manifest particle-hole symmetry. The droplet consists of free fermions on the topology of a sphere. It is also possible to deform the Hamiltonian by double trace operators, and we argue that this device can produce two body potentials which might lead the system to realize a fractional quantum hall state on the sphere. We also argue that a single gauged fermionic quantum mechanics of hermitian matrices realizes a droplet with an edge th…
We propose a matrix quantum mechanics for a class of non-Abelian quantum Hall states. The model describes electrons which carry an internal SU(p) spin. The ground states of the matrix model include spin-singlet generalisations of the Moore-Read and Read-Rezayi states and, in general, lie in a class previously introduced by Blok and Wen. The effective action for these states is a U(p) Chern-Simons theory. We show how the matrix model can be derived from quantisation of the vortices in this Chern-Simons theory and how the matrix model ground states can be reconstructed as correlation functions i…
We analyze Susskind's proposal of applying the non-commutative Chern-Simons theory to the quantum Hall effect. We study the corresponding regularized matrix Chern-Simons theory introduced by Polychronakos. We use holomorphic quantization and perform a change of matrix variables that solves the Gauss law constraint. The remaining physical degrees of freedom are the complex eigenvalues that can be interpreted as the coordinates of electrons in the lowest Landau level with Laughlin's wave function. At the same time, a statistical interaction is generated among the electrons that is necessary to s…
We show that different classes of topological order can be distinguished by the dynamical symmetry algebra of edge excitations. Fundamental topological order is realized when this algebra is the largest possible, the algebra of quantum area-preserving diffeomorphisms, called $W_{1+\infty}$. We argue that this order is realized in the Jain hierarchy of fractional quantum Hall states and show that it is more robust than the standard Abelian Chern-Simons order since it has a lower entanglement entropy due to the non-Abelian character of the quasi-particle anyon excitations. These behave as SU($m$…
We develop a matrix model to describe bilayered quantum Hall fluids for a series of filling factors. Considering two coupling layers, and starting from a corresponding action, we construct its vacuum configuration at ν=q_iK_{ij}^{-1}q_j, where K_{ij} is a 2\times 2 matrix and q_i is a vector. Our model allows us to reproduce several well-known wave functions. We show that the wave function Ψ_{(m,m,n)} constructed years ago by Yoshioka, MacDonald and Girvin for the fractional quantum Hall effect at filling factor {2\over m+n} and in particular Ψ_{(3,3,1)} at filling {1\over 2} can be obtained f…
The multiscale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA) provides a constructive algorithm for realizing wavefunctions that are inherently scale invariant. Unlike conformally invariant partition functions however, the finite bond dimension $χ$ of the MERA provides a cut-off in the fields that can be realized. In this letter, we demonstrate that this cut-off is equivalent to the one obtained when approximating a thermal state of a critical Hamiltonian with a matrix product operator (MPO) of finite bond dimension $χ$. This is achieved by constructing an explicit mapping between the isometries o…
We compute the multipartite entanglement measures such as the global entanglement of various one- and two-dimensional quantum systems to probe the quantum criticality based on the matrix and tensor product states (MPSs/TPSs). We use infinite time-evolving block decimation (iTEBD) method to find the ground states numerically in the form of MPSs/TPSs, and then evaluate their entanglement measures by the method of tensor renormalization group (TRG). We find these entanglement measures can characterize the quantum phase transitions by their derivative discontinuity right at the critical points in …
We argue that the Landau-Hall states provide a suitable framework for formulating the Berezin-Toeplitz quantization of classical functions on a Kähler phase space. We derive the star-products for such functions in this framework and generalize the Berezin-Toeplitz quantization to matrix-valued classical functions. We also comment on how this is related to different calculations of the effective action for Hall systems.
We define a new information theoretic quantity called odd entanglement entropy (OEE) which enables us to compute the entanglement wedge cross section in holographic CFTs. The entanglement wedge cross section has been introduced as a minimal cross section of the entanglement wedge, a natural generalization of the Ryu-Takayanagi surface. By using the replica trick, we explicitly compute the OEE for two-dimensional holographic CFT (AdS${}_3$ and planar BTZ blackhole) and see agreement with the entanglement wedge cross section. We conjecture this relation will hold in general dimensions.
The quantum Hall effect is studied by introducing two different matrix variables for electrons and holes, having Chern-Simons type interactions. By generalizing the constraint condition proposed by Susskind to realize the Pauli's exclusion principle in this two component matrix model, the classical exciton solution having excitation of both quasi-electron and quasi-hole is obtained. The constraint condition is also solved quantum mechanically in the infinite-sized matrix case, giving the examples of the physical states. Using these quantum states, the corrections of the exciton energy, coming …
We propose a finite Chern-Simons matrix model on the plane as an effective description of fractional quantum Hall fluids of finite extent. The quantization of the inverse filling fraction and of the quasiparticle number is shown to arise quantum mechanically and to agree with Laughlin theory. We also point out the effective equivalence of this model, and therefore of the quantum Hall system, with the Calogero model.
We propose a unitary matrix Chern-Simons model representing fractional quantum Hall fluids of finite extent on the cylinder. A mapping between the states of the two systems is established. Standard properties of Laughlin theory, such as the quantization of the inverse filling fraction and of the quasiparticle number, are reproduced by the quantum mechanics of the matrix model. We also point out that this system is holographically described in terms of the one-dimensional Sutherland integrable particle system.
It is known that gauge fields defined on manifolds with spatial boundaries support states localized at the boundaries. In this paper, we demonstrate how coarse-graining over these states can lead to an entanglement entropy. In particular, we show that the entanglement entropy of the ground state for the quantum Hall effect on a disk exhibits an approximate ``area " law.
We present a Chern-Simons matrix model describing the fractional quantum Hall effect on the two-sphere. We demonstrate the equivalence of our proposal to particular restrictions of the Calogero-Sutherland model, reproduce the quantum states and filling fraction and show the compatibility of our result with the Haldane spherical wavefunctions.
We consider spaces of trial wavefunctions for ground states and edge excitations in the fractional quantum Hall effect that can be obtained in various ways. In one way, functions are obtained by analyzing the entanglement of the ground state wavefunction, partitioned into two parts. In another, functions are defined by the way in which they vanish as several coordinates approach the same value, or by a projection-operator Hamiltonian that enforces those conditions. In a third way, functions are given by conformal blocks from a conformal field theory (CFT). These different spaces of functions a…
We propose a quantum matrix oscillator as a model that provides the construction of the quantum Hall states in a direct way. A connection of this model to the regularized matrix model introduced by Polychronakos is established . By transferring the consideration to the Bargmann representation with the help of a particular similarity transformation, we show that the quantum matrix oscillator describes the quantum mechanics of electrons in the lowest Landau level with the ground state described by the Laughlin-type wave function. The equivalence with the Calogero model in one dimension is emphas…
Negativity is an entanglement monotone frequently used to quantify entanglement in bipartite states. Because negativity is a non-analytic function of a density matrix, existing methods used in the physics literature are insufficient to compute its derivatives. To this end we develop techniques in the calculus of complex, patterned matrices and use them to conduct a perturbative analysis of negativity in terms of arbitrary variations of the density operator. The result is an easy-to-implement expansion that can be carried out to all orders. On the way we provide convenient representations of th…
We study the symmetry resolved entanglement entropies in gapped integrable lattice models. We use the corner transfer matrix to investigate two prototypical gapped systems with a U(1) symmetry: the complex harmonic chain and the XXZ spin-chain. While the former is a free bosonic system, the latter is genuinely interacting. We focus on a subsystem being half of an infinitely long chain. In both models, we obtain exact expressions for the charged moments and for the symmetry resolved entropies. While for the spin chain we found exact equipartition of entanglement (i.e. all the symmetry resolved …
