The present understanding of nonperturbative ground states in the fractional quantum Hall effect is based on effective theories of the Jain "composite fermion" excitations. We review the approach based on matrix variables, i.e. D0 branes, originally introduced by Susskind and Polychronakos. We show that the Maxwell-Chern-Simons matrix gauge theory provides a matrix generalization of the quantum Hall effect, where the composite-fermion construction naturally follows from gauge invariance. The matrix ground states obtained by suitable projections of higher Landau levels are found to be in one-to-one correspondence with the Laughlin and Jain hierarchical states. The matrix theory possesses a physical limit for commuting matrices that could be reachable while staying in the same phase.
Topological excitations in Chern-Simons gauge theories which describe double-layer fractional quantum Hall effct are studied. There are two types of solitons; one is vortex and the other is nontrivial pseudospin textures which are so-called skyrmion or meron. Effective field theory which describes these solitons is derived by duality transformation.
We show that the Chern-Simons-Landau-Ginsburg theory that describes the quantum Hall effect on a bounded sample is anomaly free and thus does not require the addition of extra chiral fermions on the boundary to restore local gauge invariance.
We propose the two formalisms for obtaining the noncommutative spacetime in a magnetic field. One is the first-order formalism and the other is the second-order formalism. Although the noncommutative spacetime is realized manifestly in the first-order formalism, the second-order formalism would be more useful for calculating the physical quantities in the noncommutative geometry than the first-order one. Several interesting points for string theory and fractional quantum Hall effect are discussed. In particular, we point out that the noncommutative geometry is closely related to the fractional…
Electromagnetic duality between the Aharonov-Bohm and the Aharonov-Casher quantum mechanical phases predicts the existence of a new collective state of matter which can be regarded as a spin dual to the fractional quantum Hall effect. The state, induced by electric fields, is driven by effective spin-spin interactions. We derive experimental and materials conditions of spin-spin interactions and electric fields under which the new state may be observed.
In this letter the fractional fermion number of thick domain walls is computed. The analysis is achieved by developing the heat kernel expansion of the spectral eta functon of the Dirac Hamiltonian governing the fermionic fluctuations around the domain wall. A formula is derived showing that a non null fermion number is always accompanied by a Hall conductivity induced on the wall. In the limit of thin and impenetrable walls the chiral bag boundary conditions arise, and the Hall conductivity is computed for this case as well.
The fundamental collective degree of freedom of fractional quantum Hall states is identified as a unimodular two-dimensional spatial metric that characterizes the local shape of the correlations of the incompressible fluid. Its quantum fluctuations are controlled by a topologically-quantized "guiding-center spin". Charge fluctuations are proportional to its Gaussian curvature.
We review the recently proposed Dirac composite fermion theory of the half-filled Landau level. This paper is based on a talk given at the Nambu Symposium at University of Chicago, March 11-13, 2016.
It is argued that fractional quantum Hall effect wavefunctions can be interpreted as conformal blocks of two-dimensional conformal field theory. Fractional statistics can be extended to nonabelian statistics and examples can be constructed from conformal field theory. The Pfaffian state is related to the 2D Ising model and possesses fractionally charged excitations which are predicted to obey nonabelian statistics.
The effective field theory of the fractional quantum Hall edge is reformulated from microscopic dynamics. Noncommutative Chern-Simons theory is a microscopic description for the quantum Hall fluid. We use it for reference. Considering relabeling symmetry of the electrons and incompressibility of the fluid, we obtain a constraint and derive a chiral Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid theory containing interaction terms. We calculate one-loop corrections to the phonon and electron propagators and get a new tunneling exponent. It agrees with experiments.
The (guiding-center) "Hall viscosity" is a fundamental tensor property of incompressible ``Hall fluids'' exhibiting the fractional quantum Hall effect; it determines the stress induced by a non-uniform electric field, and the intrinsic dipole moment on (unreconstructed) edges. It is characterized by a rational number and an intrinsic metric tensor that defines distances on an ``incompressibility lengthscale''. These properties do not require rotational invariance in the 2D plane. The sign of the guiding-center Hall viscosity distinguishes particle fluids from hole fluids, and its magnitude pro…
This article is based on the talk "Fractional Spin Gravity" presented in the 31st International Colloquium on Group Theoretical Methods in Physics, Rio de Janeiro, 19-25th June 2016. There we emphasised an implication of the works [1,2] by N. Boulanger, P. Sundell and the author on fractional spin extensions of 2+1D higher spin gravity. This is that higher spin gravity may govern interactions of pseudo-particles excitations in the (fractional) quantum Hall effect. More generally, fractional spin currents in 2+1D source higher spin gravity curvatures.
It is shown, that a spectrum generating algebras and wave functions for the integral and fractional quantum Hall effect are related by the non-unitary similarity transformation. This transformation corresponds to the introduction of the complex Chern-Simons gauge fields, in terms of which the second quantized form of FQHE can be developed
We examine the application of $c=1$ conformal field theory to the description of the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE). It is found that the Gaussian model together with an appropriate boundary condition for the order parameter furnishes an effective theory for the Laughlin type FQHE. The plateau formation condition corresponds to taking the {\em chiral} portion of the theory.
We give a universal description of the mesoscopic effects occurring in fractional quantum Hall disks due to the Aharonov-Bohm flux threading the system. The analysis is based on the exact treatment of the flux within the conformal field theory framework and is relevant for all fractional quantum Hall states whose edge states CFTs are known. As an example we apply this scheme for the parafermion Hall states and extract the main characteristics of the low- and high- temperature asymptotic behavior of the persistent currents.
We present a Chern-Simons matrix model describing the fractional quantum Hall effect on the two-sphere. We demonstrate the equivalence of our proposal to particular restrictions of the Calogero-Sutherland model, reproduce the quantum states and filling fraction and show the compatibility of our result with the Haldane spherical wavefunctions.
In this paper we give a survey of some models of the integer and fractional quantum Hall effect based on noncommutative geometry. We begin by recalling some classical geometry of electrons in solids and the passage to noncommutative geometry produced by the presence of a magnetic field. We recall how one can obtain this way a single electron model of the integer quantum Hall effect. While in the case of the integer quantum Hall effect the underlying geometry is Euclidean, we then discuss a model of the fractional quantum Hall effect, which is based on hyperbolic geometry simulating the multi-e…
We construct the hierarchical wave function of the spin-singlet fractional quantum Hall effect, which turns out to satisfy Fock cyclic condition. The spin-statistics relation of the quasi-particles in the spin-singlet fractional quantum Hall effect is also discussed. Then we use particle-hole conjugation to check the wave function.
We propose a pseudo-potential Hamiltonian for the Zhang-Hu's generalized fractional quantum Hall states to be the exact and unique ground states. Analogously to Laughlin's quasi-hole (quasi-particle), the excitations in the generalized fractional quantum Hall states are extended objects. They are vortex-like excitations with fractional charges $+(-)1/m^3$ in the total configuration space CP$^3$. The density correlation function of the Zhang-Hu states indicates that they are incompressible liquid.
One kind of the hierarchical wave functions of Fractional Quantum Hall Effect on the torus is constructed. We find that the wave functions closely relate to the wave functions of generalized Abelian Chern-Simons theory.
One kind of hierarchical wave functions of Fractional Quantum Hall Effect (FQHE) on the torus are constructed. The multi-component nature of anyon wave functions and the degeneracy of FQHE on the torus are very clear reflected in this kind of wave functions. We also calculate the braid statistics of the quasiparticles in FQHE on the torus and show they fit to the picture of anyons interacting with magnetic field on the torus obtained from braid group analysis.
Formulation of quantum Hall dynamics using von Neumann lattice of guiding center coordinates is presented. A topological invariant expression of the Hall conductance is given and a new mean field theory of the fractional Hall effect based on flux condensation is proposed. Because our mean field Hamiltonian has the same form as Hofstadter Hamiltonian, it is possible to understand characteristic features of the fractional Hall effect from Hofstadter's spectrum. Energy gap and other physical quantities are computed and are compared with the experiments. A reasonable agreement is obtained.
We construct a class of 2+1 dimensional relativistic quantum field theories which exhibit the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect in the infrared, both in the continuum and on the lattice. The UV completion consists of a perturbative $U(1)\times U(1)$ gauge theory with only integer-charged fields, while the low energy spectrum consists of nontrivial topological phases supporting fractional currents, fractionally charged chiral surface modes and bulk anyonic excitations. Exotic phenomena such as a Fractional Quantum Spin Hall Effect can arise in such models.
We derive the braid relations of the charged anyons interacting with a magnetic field on Riemann surfaces. The braid relations are used to calculate the quasiparticle's spin in the fractional quantum Hall states on Riemann surfaces. The quasiparticle's spin is found to be topological independent and satisfies physical restrictions.
We show that our recently proposed method\cite{BMM1,BMM2,BMM3,BM4} of constructing nonrelativistic diffeomorphism invariant field theories by gauging the Galilean symmetry provides a natural connection with the geometry of the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE). Specifically, the covariant derivative that appears on gauging, exactly reproduces the form that yields the Hall viscosity and Wen-Zee shift \cite{CYF}.
We show that the set of double-layer Fractional Quantum Hall (FQH) states with a given topological order form a finite Abelian group under a new product. This group structure makes it possible to construct new FQH states from known ones. We also introduce a new index which can be used to characterize the topological order of FQH states.
We present a framework for the analytic calculations of the hierarchical wave functions and the composite fermion wave functions in the fractional quantum Hall effect on the sphere by using projective coordinates. Then we calculate the overlaps between these two wave functions at various fillings and small numbers of electrons. We find that the overlaps are all most equal to one. This gives a further evidence that two theories of the fractional quantum Hall effect, the hierarchical theory and the composite fermion theory, are physically equivalent.
We present a Landau-Ginzburg theory for a fractional quantized Hall nematic state and the transition to it from an isotropic fractional quantum Hall state. This justifies Lifshitz-Chern-Simons theory -- which is shown to be its dual -- on a more microscopic basis and enables us to compute a ground state wave function in the symmetry-broken phase. In such a state of matter, the Hall resistance remains quantized while the longitudinal DC resistivity due to thermally-excited quasiparticles is anisotropic. We interpret recent experiments at Landau level filling factor ν=7/3 in terms of our theory.
We have generalized recent results of Cappelli, Trugenberger and Zemba on the integer quantum Hall effect constructing explicitly a ${\cal W}_{1+\infty}$ for the fractional quantum Hall effect such that the negative modes annihilate the Laughlin wave functions. This generalization has a nice interpretation in Jain's composite fermion theory. Furthermore, for these models we have calculated the wave functions of the edge excitations viewing them as area preserving deformations of an incompressible quantum droplet, and have shown that the ${\cal W}_{1+\infty}$ is the underlying symmetry of the e…
An approach to understand Fractional Quantum Hall Effect (FQHE) using anomalies is studied in this paper. More specifically, this is done by looking at the anomaly in the current conservation equation of a WZNW theory describing fields living at the edge of the two dimensional Hall sample. This WZNW theory itself comes from the non-Abelian bosonisation of fermions living at the edge. It is shown that this model can describe both integer and fractional quantization of conductivities in a unified manner.
We identify Moore-Read wavefunctions, describing non-abelian statistics in fractional quantum Hall systems, with the instanton partition of N=2 superconformal quiver gauge theories at suitable values of masses and Ω-background parameters. This is obtained by extending to rational conformal field theories the SU(2) gauge quiver/Liouville field theory duality recently found by Alday-Gaiotto-Tachikawa. A direct link between the Moore-Read Hall $n$-body wavefunctions and Z_n-equivariant Donaldson polynomials is pointed out.
