We show that different classes of topological order can be distinguished by the dynamical symmetry algebra of edge excitations. Fundamental topological order is realized when this algebra is the largest possible, the algebra of quantum area-preserving diffeomorphisms, called $W_{1+\infty}$. We argue that this order is realized in the Jain hierarchy of fractional quantum Hall states and show that it is more robust than the standard Abelian Chern-Simons order since it has a lower entanglement entropy due to the non-Abelian character of the quasi-particle anyon excitations. These behave as SU($m$) quarks, where $m$ is the number of components in the hierarchy. We propose the topological entanglement entropy as the experimental measure to detect the existence of these quantum Hall quarks. Non-Abelian anyons in the $ν= 2/5$ fractional quantum Hall states could be the primary candidates to realize qbits for topological quantum computation.
Anyon collision experiments have recently demonstrated the ability to discriminate between fermionic and anyonic statistics. However, only one type of anyons associated with the simple Laughlin state at filling factor $ν=1/3$ has been probed so far. It is now important to establish anyon collisions as quantitative probes of fractional statistics for more complex topological orders, with the ability to distinguish between different species of anyons with different statistics. In this work, we use the anyon collider to compare the Laughlin $ν=1/3$ state, which is used as the reference state, wit…
The lowest-Landau-level anyon model becomes nonperiodic in the statistics parameter when the finite size of the attached flux tubes is taken into account. The finite-size effects cause the inverse proportional relation between the critical filling factor and the statistics parameter to be nonperiodically continued in the screening regime, where the fluxes are anti-parallel to the external magnetic field -- at critical filling, the external magnetic field is entirely screened by the mean magnetic field associated with the flux tubes. A clustering argument is proposed to select particular values…
We discuss the relationship between fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states at filling factor $ν=p/(2p+1)$ and quantum spin chains. This series corresponds to the Jain series $ν=p/(2mp+1)$ with $m=1$ where the composite fermion picture is realized. We show that the FQH states with toroidal boundary conditions beyond the thin-torus limit can be mapped to effective quantum spin S=1 chains with $p$ spins in each unit cell. We calculate energy gaps and the correlation functions for both the FQH systems and the corresponding effective spin chains, using exact diagonalization and the infinite time-evol…
We generalize the hierarchy construction to generic 2+1D topological orders (which can be non-Abelian) by condensing Abelian anyons in one topological order to construct a new one. We show that such construction is reversible and leads to a new equivalence relation between topological orders. We refer to the corresponding equivalent class (the orbit of the hierarchy construction) as "the non-Abelian family". Each non-Abelian family has one or a few root topological orders with the smallest number of anyon types. All the Abelian topological orders belong to the trivial non-Abelian family whose …

We solve the quantum Hall problem exactly in a limit and show that the ground states can be organized in a fractal pattern consistent with the Haldane-Halperin hierarchy, and with the global phase diagram. We present wave functions for a large family of states, including those of Laughlin and Jain and also for states recently observed by Pan {\it et. al.}, and show that they coincide with the exact ones in the solvable limit. We submit that they establish an adiabatic continuation of our exact results to the experimentally accessible regime, thus providing a unified approach to the hierarchy s…
Topological phases supporting non-abelian anyonic excitations have been proposed as candidates for topological quantum computation. In this paper, we study disordered non-abelian anyonic chains based on the quantum groups $SU(2)_k$, a hierarchy that includes the $ν=5/2$ FQH state and the proposed $ν=12/5$ Fibonacci state, among others. We find that for odd $k$ these anyonic chains realize infinite randomness critical {\it phases} in the same universality class as the $S_k$ permutation symmetric multi-critical points of Damle and Huse (Phys. Rev. Lett. 89, 277203 (2002)). Indeed, we show that t…
The correlations that give rise to incompressible quantum liquid (IQL) states in fractional quantum Hall systems are determined by the pseudopotential $V(\mathcal R)$ describing the interaction of a pair of Fermions in a degenerate Landau level (LL) as a function of relative pair angular momentum $\mathcal R$. $V(\mathcal R)$ is known for a number of different Fermion systems, e.g. electrons in the lowest Landau level (LL0) or the first excited Landau level (LL1), and for quasiparticles of Laughlin-Jain IQL states. Laughlin correlations, the avoidance of pair states with the smallest values of…
The coupled-wire construction provides a useful way to obtain microscopic Hamiltonians for various two-dimensional topological phases, among which fractional quantum Hall states are paradigmatic examples. Using the recently introduced flux attachment and vortex duality transformations for coupled wires, we show that this construction is remarkably versatile to encapsulate phenomenologies of hierarchical quantum Hall states: the Jain-type hierarchy states of composite fermions filling Landau levels and the Haldane-Halperin hierarchy states of quasiparticle condensation. The particle-hole conjug…
We consider the effect of quenched spatial disorder on systems of interacting, pinned non-Abelian anyons as might arise in disordered Hall samples at filling fractions ν=5/2 or ν=12/5. In one spatial dimension, such disordered anyon models have previously been shown to exhibit a hierarchy of infinite randomness phases. Here, we address systems in two spatial dimensions and report on the behavior of Ising and Fibonacci anyons under the numerical strong-disorder renormalization group (SDRG). In order to manage the topology-dependent interactions generated during the flow, we introduce a planar a…
Laughlin's wave functions, describing the fractional quantum Hall effect at filling factors $ν=1/(2k+1)$, can be obtained as correlation functions in conformal field theory, and recently this construction was extended to Jain's composite fermion wave functions at filling factors $ν=n/(2kn+1)$. Here we generalize this latter construction and present ground state wave functions for all quantum Hall hierarchy states that are obtained by successive condensation of quasielectrons (as opposed to quasiholes) in the original hierarchy construction. By considering these wave functions on a cylinder, we…
We propose a Ginzburg-Landau theory for a large and important part of the abelian quantum Hall hierarchy, including the prominently observed Jain sequences. By a generalized "flux attachment" construction we extend the Ginzburg-Landau-Chern-Simons composite boson theory to states obtained by both quasielectron and quasihole condensation, and express the corresponding wave functions as correlators in conformal field theories. This yields a precise identification of the relativistic scalar fields entering these correlators in terms of the original electron field.
We study the $ν=\frac{2}{k+2}$ quantum Hall states which are particle-hole conjugates of the $ν=\frac{k}{k+2}$ Read-Rezayi states. We find that equilibration between the different modes at the edge of such a state leads to an emergent SU(2)$_k$ algebra in the counter-propagating neutral sector. Heat flow along the edges of these states will be in the opposite direction of charge flow. In the $k=3$ case, which may be relevant to $ν=2+{2/5}$, the thermal Hall conductance and the exponents associated with quasiparticle and electron tunneling distinguish this state from competing states such as th…
Using methods based on conformal field theory, we construct model wave functions on a torus with arbitrary flat metric for all chiral states in the abelian quantum Hall hierarchy. These functions have no variational parameters, and they transform under the modular group in the same way as the multicomponent generalizations of the Laughlin wave functions. Assuming the absence of Berry phases upon adiabatic variations of the modular parameter $τ$, we calculate the quantum Hall viscosity and find it to be in agreement with the formula, given by Read, which relates the viscosity to the average orb…
We perform a detail study of higher dimensional quantum Hall effects and A-class topological insulators with emphasis on their relations to non-commutative geometry. There are two different formulations of non-commutative geometry for higher dimensional fuzzy spheres; the ordinary commutator formulation and quantum Nambu bracket formulation. Corresponding to these formulations, we introduce two kinds of monopole gauge fields; non-abelian gauge field and antisymmetric tensor gauge field, which respectively realize the non-commutative geometry of fuzzy sphere in the lowest Landau level. We estab…
We study the Quantum Hall phases that appear in the fast rotation limit for Bose-Einstein condensates of spinless bosonic atoms. We use exact diagonalization in a spherical geometry to obtain low-lying states of a small number of bosons as a function of the angular momentum. This allows to understand or guess the physics at a given filling fraction nu, ratio of the number of bosons to the number of vortices. This is also the filling factor of the lowest Landau level. In addition to the well-known Bose Laughlin state at nu =1/2 we give evidence for the Jain principal sequence of incompressible …
An important challenge in the field of many-body quantum dynamics is to identify non-ergodic states of matter beyond many-body localization (MBL). Strongly disordered spin chains with non-Abelian symmetry and chains of non-Abelian anyons are natural candidates, as they are incompatible with standard MBL. In such chains, real space renormalization group methods predict a partially localized, non-ergodic regime known as a quantum critical glass (a critical variant of MBL). This regime features a tree-like hierarchy of integrals of motion and symmetric eigenstates with entanglement entropy that s…
