We have grown a YCrO$_3$ single crystal by the floating-zone method and studied its temperature-dependent crystalline structure and magnetization by X-ray powder diffraction and PPMS DynaCool measurements. All diffraction patterns were well indexed by an orthorhombic structure with space group of $Pbnm$ (No. 62). From 36 to 300 K, no structural phase transition occurs in the pulverized YCrO$_3$ single crystal. The antiferromagnetic phase transition temperature was determined as $T_\textrm{N} =$ 141.58(5) K by the magnetization versus temperature measurements. We found weak ferromagnetic behavior in the magnetic hysteresis loops below $T_\textrm{N}$. Especially, we demonstrated that the antiferromagnetism and weak ferromagnetism appear simutaniously upon cooling. The lattice parameters ($a$, $b$, $c$, and $V$) deviate downward from the Gr$\ddot{\textrm{u}}$neisen law, displaying an anisotropic magnetostriction effect. We extracted temperature variation of the local distortion parameter $Δ$. Compared to the $Δ$ value of Cr ions, Y, O1, and O2 ions show one order of magnitude larger $Δ$ values indicative of much stronger local lattice distortions. Moreover, the calculated bond valence states of Y and O2 ions have obvious subduction charges.
We have investigated the electronic structure of the high oxidation state material YCrO$_4$ within the framework of the Zaanen-Sawatzky-Allen phase diagram. While Cr$^{4+}$-based compounds like SrCrO$_3$/CaCrO$_3$ and CrO$_2$ can be classified as small-gap or metallic negative-charge-transfer systems, we find using photoelectron spectroscopy that YCrO$_4$ is a robust insulator despite the fact that its Cr ions have an even higher formal valence state of 5+. We reveal using band structure calculations that the tetrahedral coordination of the Cr$^{5+}$ ions in YCrO$_4$ plays a decisive role, nam…
Magnetization measurements and time-of-flight neutron powder-diffraction studies on the high-temperature (300--980 K) magnetism and crystal structure (321--1200 K) of a pulverized YCrO$_3$ single crystal have been performed. Temperature-dependent inverse magnetic susceptibility coincides with a piecewise linear function with five regimes, with which we fit a Curie-Weiss law and calculate the frustration factor $f$. The fit results indicate a formation of magnetic polarons between 300 and 540 K and a very strong magnetic frustration. By including one factor $η$ that represents the degree of spi…
We have studied a nearly stoichiometric insulating Y$_{0.97(2)}$Cr$_{0.98(2)}$O$_{3.00(2)}$ single crystal by performing measurements of magnetization, heat capacity, and neutron diffraction. Albeit that the YCrO$_3$ compound behaviors like a soft ferromagnet with a coersive force of $\sim$ 0.05 T, there exist strong antiferromagnetic (AFM) interactions between Cr$^{3+}$ spins due to a strongly negative paramagnetic Curie-Weiss temperature, i.e., -433.2(6) K. The coexistence of ferromagnetism and antiferromagnetism may indicate a canted AFM structure. The AFM phase transition occurs at $T_\tex…
Detailed magnetic properties of the compound Sr2YbRuO6 are presented here. The compound belongs to the family of double perovskites forming a monoclinic structure. Magnetization meas-urements reveal clear evidence for two components of magnetic ordering aligned opposite to each other, leading to a magnetization reversal, compensation temperature (T* = 34 K) and neg-ative magnetization at low temperatures and low magnetic fields. Heat capacity measurements corroborate the presence of two components in the magnetic ordering and a noticeable third anomaly at low temperatures (~15 K) which cannot …
Field-induced magnetization jumps with similar characteristics are observed at low temperature for the intermetallic germanide Gd5Ge4and the mixed-valent manganite Pr0.6Ca0.4Mn0.96Ga0.04O3. We report that the field location -and even the existence- of these jumps depends critically on the magnetic field sweep rate used to record the data. It is proposed that, for both compounds, the martensitic character of their antiferromagnetic-to-ferromagnetic transitions is at the origin of the magnetization steps.
We report on a study of various RVO3 single-crystal samples (R = La, Nd, Sm, Gd, Er and Y) which show temperature-induced magnetization reversal. For compounds with lighter rare-earths (R = La, Nd and Sm), magnetization reversal can be observed for magnetic field applied in the ab plane and along the c axis, whereas for the heavy rare-earths (R = Gd, Er) magnetization reversal is only observed when the field is applied along the a axis. YVO3 has a magnetization reversal along all the main crystallographic axes in a modest applied field. We have found that some compounds are very sensitive to s…
The magnetic behavior of the Ca3Co2O6 spin chain compound is characterized by a large Ising-like character of its ferromagnetic chains, set on triangular lattice, that are antiferromagnetically coupled. At low temperature, T < 7K, the 3D antiferromagnetic state evolves towards a spin frozen state. In this temperature range, magnetic field driven magnetization of single crystals (H//chains) exhibits stepped variations. The occurrence of these steps at regular intervals of the applied magnetic field, Hstep=1.2T, is reminiscent of the quantum tunneling of the magnetization (QTM) of molecular base…
Here we report the magnetic and heat capacity studies of the double perovskite com-pounds Ba2SmRuO6 and Ba2DyRuO6. Antiferromagnetic transitions are inferred at 54 K and 47 K in Ba2SmRuO6 and Ba2DyRuO6, respectively in the magnetization measure-ments. Heat capacity measurements show large jumps at the corresponding temperatures and confirm the bulk magnetic ordering. Both the measurements provide clear indication of the ordering of the rare earth moments also along with the Ruthenium moments. How-ever, the heat capacity results suggest that the ordering of rare earth magnetic moments is spread…
We report a novel feature of the temperature induced magnetization jump observed along the a-axis of the GdVO3 single crystal at temperature TM = 0.8 K. Below TM, the compound shows no coercivity and remanent magnetization indicating a homogenous antiferromagnetic structure. However, we will demonstrate that the magnetic state below TM is indeed history dependent and it shows up in different jumps in the magnetization only when warming the sample through TM. Such a magnetic memory effect is highly unusual and suggesting different domain arrangements in the supposedly homogenous antiferromagnet…
In this article, the collective response of the spins is explored through low field bulk magnetic measurement for the series YMn$_{2-x}$Cr$_x$O$_5$ (x= 0.0, 0.05). Low field ac susceptibility and dc magnetization of YMn$_2$O$_5$ shows multiple transition in analogy to those observed in electrical measurement of the compound. Using various time dependent magnetization protocols it has been observed that the behavior of spins in commensurate and incommensurate phase are drastically different. YMn$_{1.95}$Cr$_{0.05}$O$_5$ undergoes a ferrimagnetic ordering with an enhanced magnetic ordering tempe…
Avalanches of the magnetization, that is to say an abrupt reversal of the magnetization at a given field, have been previously reported in the spin-ice compound Dy$_{2}$Ti$_{2}$O$_{7}$. This out-of-equilibrium process, induced by magneto-thermal heating, is quite usual in low temperature magnetization studies. A key point is to determine the physical origin of the avalanche process. In particular, in spin-ice compounds, the origin of the avalanches might be related to the monopole physics inherent to the system. We have performed a detailed study of the avalanche phenomena in three single crys…
C14 Nb(Fe89.4Al10.6)2 Laves phase intermetallic compound was investigated by DC magnetization (M) measurements performed in the temperature (T) interval of 20 to 175 K,under an applied magnetic field (H) ranging between 50 and 1250 Oe. Magnetization curves were recorded in the field-cooled (FC) and in the zero-field-cooled (ZFC) modes. They clearly showed an irreversible character that vanished at H=1250 Oe. Both magnetization curves exhibited well-defined peaks around T_N =72.3 K whose positions were H-independent, so they were identified as the compound's Néel temperature. The existence of i…
The spin-chain compounds, Ca3CuIrO6 and Ca3CuRhO6, crystallizing in a K4CdCl6-derived monoclinic structure, are investigated by ac and dc magnetization, isothermal remnant magnetization as well as heat capacity measurements. The results reveal the existence of a magnetic ordering in the vicinity of 15 K for both the compounds, but the transition appears to be of a complex nature. The existence of a spin-glass component is strongly indicated by the results. We propose that topological effects play a role on magnetism of these compounds. The magnetic properties for these two compounds are intere…
We report the results of ac and dc magnetic susceptibility (chi), heat-capacity (C), isothermal magnetization and isothermal remanent magnetization measurements on the compound, Sr3CuRhO6, crystallizing in a K4CdCl6-derived monoclinic structure. The magnetization data reveal distinct magnetic anomalies near 6 and 12 K with decreasing temperature (T). While the transition below (To=) 6K appears to be of a spin-glass-type as inferred from all the data, the one at 12 K is not typical of bulk ferromagnetism in contrast to an earlier proposal. In the range 6 to 12 K, the dc chi obeys the theoretica…
Anomalous magnetic properties of the double perovskite ruthenates compound Sr2YRuO6 are reported here. Magnetization measurements as a function of temperature in low magnetic fields show clear evidence for two components of magnetic order (TM1 ~ 32K and TM2 ~ 27K) aligned opposite to each other with respect to the magnetic field direction even though only Ru5+moments can order magnetically in this compound. The second component of the magnetic order at TM2 ~ 27K results only in a magnetization reversal, and not in the negative magnetization when the magnetization is measured in the field coole…
Emergence of partially disordered antiferromagnetism and isothermal magnetization plateau due to geometrical frustration in a metallic compound, Er2RhSi3
We have measured the magnetization of the organic compound BIP-BNO (3,5'-bis(N-tert-butylaminoxyl)-3',5-dibromobiphenyl) up to 76 T where the magnetization is saturated. The S = 1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg two-leg spin-ladder model accounts for the obtained experimental data regarding the magnetization curve, which is clarified using the quantum Monte Carlo method. The exchange constants on the rung and the side rail of the ladder are estimated to be J(rung)/kB = 65.7 K and J(leg)/kB = 14.1 K, respectively, deeply in the strong coupling region: J(rung)/J(leg) > 1.
Magnetic field and time induced steps have been observed in the recently discovered ternary silicide R6Co1.67Si3. Huge relaxation steps are observed across different loops in the low temperature magnetization isotherms. Giant relaxation present in this system indicates the existence of incubation time to get the saturated moment at a certain field. Measurement protocol sensitive magnetization behavior observed in this system may arise from the strong magnetostructural coupling and/or magnetic frustration. Electrical resistivity and magnetoresistance also reflect the magnetic state of the compo…
Single crystals of Cu$_{13}$Ba were successfully grown out of Ba-Cu self flux. Temperature dependent magnetization, $M(T)$, electrical resistivity, $ρ(T)$, and specific heat, $C_p(T)$, data are reported. Isothermal magnetization measurements, $M(H)$, show clear de Haas-van Alphen oscillations at $T$ = 2 K for applied fields as low as $μ_0H$ = 1T. An anomalous behavior of the magnetic susceptibility is observed up to $T$ ~ 50K reflecting the effect of de Haas-van Alphen oscillations at fairly high temperatures. The field- and temperature-dependencies of the magnetization indicate the presence o…
We report on the anomalous magnetization reversal under hydrostatic pressure in the lightly electron-doped manganite compound (Ca$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$)Mn$_{0.95}$Sb$_{0.05}$O$_{3}$ with its fixed carrier content. In a weakly magnetic field cooled measurement, diamagnetic magnetization is observed for $x\leq 15\%$, which changes to positive values for $x>15\%$. However, on an application of pressure on the samples with $x=16\%$ and 17$\%$, magnetization reverses sign and diamagnetism is restored. We present a magnetic phase diagram as a function of Sr concentration, under both ambient and hydrostati…
The magnetization of two spin-1/2 kagome antiferromagnets, volborthite and vesignieite, has been measured in pulsed magnetic fields up to 68 T. A magnetization plateau is observed for each compound near the highest magnetic field. Magnetizations at saturation are approximately equal to 0.40Ms for both compounds, where Ms is the fully saturated magnetization, irrespective of a difference in the distortion of the kagome lattice between the two compounds. It should be noted that these values of magnetizations are significantly larger than Ms/3 predicted theoretically for the one-third magnetizati…
Magnons play an important role in fast precessional magnetization reversal processes serving as a heat bath for dissipation of the Zeeman energy and thus being responsible for the relaxation of magnetization. Employing \emph{ab initio} many-body perturbation theory we studied the magnon spectra of the tetragonal FeCo compounds considering three different experimental $c/a$ ratios, $c/a=$1.13, 1.18, and 1.24 corresponding to FeCo grown on Pd, Ir, and Rh, respectively. We find that for all three cases the short-wave-length magnons are strongly damped and tetragonal distortion gives rise to a sig…
Complex magneto structural behaviour of rare rich intermetallic Tb$_3$Co is reported in this study. Below the 84K (T$_N$), it undergoes a first order magnetic transition 72K confirmed from specific heat and magnetization measurements. Detailed study using magnetization, specific heat, neuron diffraction and ac-susceptibility measurements suggests that the compound in the question possesses canted magnetic structure. Neutron diffraction reveals that Tb moments are aligned antiferromagnetically (AFM) in ab plane and ferromagnetically (FM) along c direction. This study focusses on the temperature…
We have studied the magnetic, magnetocaloric and magnetotransport properties of RSn1+xGe1-x(R=Gd, Tb, Er; x=0.1) series by means of magnetization, heat capacity and resistivity measurements. It has been found that all the compounds crystallize in the orthorhombic crystal structure described by the centrosymmetric space group Cmcm (No. 63). The magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity data suggest that all the compounds are antiferromagnetic. Large negative values of θp in case of GdSn1.1Ge0.9 and TbSn1.1Ge0.9 indicate that strong antiferromagnetic interactions are involved, which is also refl…
Single crystals of R$_2$CoGa$_8$ series of compounds were grown, for the first time, by high temperature solution growth (flux) method. These compounds crystallize in a tetragonal crystal structure with the space group $P4/mmm$. It has been found that R$_2$CoGa$_8$ phase forms only with the heavier rare earths, starting from Gd with a relatively large $c/a$ ratio of $\approx$ 2.6. The resultant anisotropic magnetic properties of the compounds were investigated along the two principal crystallographic directions of the crystal viz., along [100] and [001]. The nonmagnetic compounds Y$_2$CoGa$_8$…
We report the synthesis and characterization of a new quantum magnet [2-[Bis(2-hydroxybenzyl)aminomethyl]pyridine]Ni(II)-trimer (BHAP-Ni3) in single-crystalline form. Our combined experimental and theoretical investigations reveal an exotic spin state that stabilizes a robust 2/3 magnetization plateau between 7 and 20 T in an external magnetic field. AC-susceptibility measurements show the absence of any magnetic order/glassy state down to 60 mK. The magnetic ground state is disordered and specific-heat measurements reveal the gapped nature of the spin excitations. Most interestingly, our theo…
Estimating the intrachain and interchain exchange constants in BaCu2X2O7 (X=Ge,Si) by means of density-functional calculations within the local spin-density approximation (LSDA) we find the Ge compound to be a more ideal realization of a one-dimensional spin chain with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction than its Si counterpart. Both compounds have a comparable magnitude of interchain couplings in the range of 5-10 K, but the nearest neighbor intrachain exchange of the Ge compound is nearly twice as large as for the Si one. Using the LSDA+U method we predict the detailed magnetization density di…
In their recent communication (Phys. Rev. B 64, 060406(R) (2001)) Cornelius and Gardner have reported the results of magnetization and susceptibility studies on single crystals of the pyrochlore Ho2Ti2O7. The observed field dependence of magnetization is totally unexpected, as it seems to suggest that the magnetic moments in this compound do not obey the 'ice-rule'. We have re-measured the magnetization curves for Ho2Ti2O7 single crystal for the three principal directions of an applied magnetic field and found nearly perfect agreement with the predictions for a nearest-neighbor spin-ice model.
The results of the magnetization studies on Pr_{5}Ge_{3}and Tb_{5}Ge_{3} single crystals are reported. Single Crystals of Pr_{5}Ge_{3} and Tb_{5}Ge_{3} compounds were successfully grown by Czochralski method. These compounds crystallize in a Mn_{5}Si_{3} type hexagonal structure with space group P6_{3}/mcm. Ferromagnetic correlations set in at around 36 K in Pr_{5}Ge_{3} in the ab plane followed by an antiferromagnetic transition at 13 K. Along the c-axis the magnetization shows a ferromagnetic transition around 13 K with an overall ferrimagnetic behavior. At 2K, the magnetic isotherm of the c…
The results of dc magnetization, electrical and magnetoresistance and heat capacity measurements (2-300 K) on Tb7Rh3, crystallizing in Th7Fe3-type hexagonal structure, are reported. In this compound, magnetic ordering sets in around 90 K with additional transitions at low temperatures and the temperature coefficient of resistivity (R), dR/dT, is negative over a wide temperature range in the paramagnetic state. The present magnetization results reveal that this compound is apparently characterized by rich features in the magnetic-field-temperature phase diagram. A point of major emphasis is tha…
We have carried out dc magnetic susceptibility, magnetization and specific heat measurements on thiospinel CuCrZrS$_{4}$. Below $T_{\rm C}^{*} =$ 58 K, dc magnetic susceptibility and magnetization data show ferromagnetic behavior with a small spontaneous magnetization 0.27 $μ_{\rm B}/$f. u.. In dc magnetic susceptibility, large and weak irreversibilities are observed below $T_{\rm f} =$ 6 K and in the range $T_{\rm f}< T < T_{\rm C}^{*}$ respectively. We found that there is no anomaly as a peak or step in the specific heat at $T_{\rm C}^{*}$.
Substitutions in the Mn-sublattice of antiferromagnetic, charge and orbitally ordered manganites was recently found to produce intriguing metamagnetic transitions, consisting of a succession of sharp magnetization steps separated by plateaus. The compounds exhibiting such features can be divided in two categories, depending on whether they are sensitive to thermal cycling effects or not. One compound of each category has been considered in the present study. The paper reports on the influence of two treatments: high-temperature annealing and grinding. It is shown that both of these treatments …
RuSr2(LnCe2)Cu2O12.25 (Ru-1232) compounds with Ln = Y and Dy being synthesized by high pressure high temperature (6GPa, 12000C) solid state synthesis route do crystallize in space group P4/mmm in near single phase form with small quantities of SrRuO3 and RuSr2(RE1.5Ce0.5)Cu2O10 (Ru-1222). Both samples exhibit magnetic transitions (Tmag.) at ~90 K with significant branching of zfc (zero-field-cooled) and fc (field-cooled) magnetization and a sharp cusp in zfc at ~ 70 K, followed by superconducting transitions at ~ 30 K. Both compounds show typical ferromagnetic hysteresis loops in magnetic mome…
Here we provide the first clear evidence of Fermi-liquid breakdown in an intermediate valence system. We employ high precision magnetization measurements of the valence fluctuating superconductor beta-YbAlB4 to probe the quantum critical free energy down to temperatures far below the characteristic energy scale of the valence fluctuations. The observed T/B scaling in the magnetization over three decades not only indicates unconventional quantum criticality, but places an upper bound on the critical magnetic field |B_c| < 0.2 mT, a value comparable with the Earth's magnetic field and six orders…
The results of dc magnetization, heat capacity, electrical resistivity (rho) and magnetoresistance measurements are reported in detail for the compounds, RCuAs2 for R= Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, and Er, crystallizing in HfCuSi2-type tetragonal structure, with the aim of bringing out anomalies among 'normal' (that is, other than Ce and Yb) rare-earths. The results establish that all these compounds order antiferromagnetically at low temperatures with deviations from de Gennes scaling. Isothermal magnetization (M) data below respective Neel temperatures (TN) reveal the existence of field-induce…
We study the field-induced quantum phase transitions (QPT) and the relevant magnetic properties of a spin-1/2 two-leg integrable spin ladder (ISL), of which the system parameters in bridging to the real compounds are determined by setting the extra interactions in the Hamiltonian of the ISL relative to the Heisenberg spin ladder to vanish in the expectation in the ground state (GS). Such an ISL analytically has the correct leading terms of both the critical fields of the two QPT's as in the real strongly-coupled compounds: gμ_BH_{c1}=J_{\perp}-J_{\parallel} and gμ_BH_{c2}=J_{\perp}+2J_{\parall…
Magnetic properties of AMoOPO$_4$Cl (A = K, Rb) with Mo$^{5+}$ ions in the 4$d^1$ electronic configuration are investigated by magnetization, heat capacity and NMR measurements on single crystals, combined with powder neutron diffraction experiments. The magnetization measurements reveal that they are good model compounds for the spin-1/2 $J_1-J_2$ square lattice magnet with the first and second nearest-neighbor interactions. Magnetic transitions are observed at around 6 and 8 K in the K and Rb compounds, respectively. In contrast to the normal Néel-type antiferromagnetic order, the NMR and ne…
The compounds, Gd6Co1.67Si3 and Tb6Co1.67Si3, recently reported to form in a Ce6Ni2Si3-derived hexagonal structure (space group: P6_3 / m) and to order magnetically below 295 and 190 K respectively, have been investigated by detailed magnetization (M) studies in the temperature interval 1.8-330 K as a function of magnetic field (H). The points of emphasis are: We observe multiple steps in the M(H) curve for the Tb compound at 1.8 K while increasing H, but these steps do not appear in the reverse cycle of H. At higher temperatures, such steps are absent. However, this 'staircase' behavior of M(…
The response of an open spin chain with isotropic antiferromagnetic interactions to a uniform magnetic field is studied by classical Monte Carlo simulations. It is observed how the induced on-site magnetization is non uniform, due to the occurrence of edge staggered terms which decay exponentially over a distance equal to the zero field correlation length of the infinite chain. The total magnetic moment associated to each staggered term is found to be about half of the original single-spin magnitude and to decrease as the inverse of temperature (i.e. to behave as a Curie-like moment). The nume…
We report the local (NMR) and bulk (magnetization and heat capacity) properties of the vanadium-based S=1/2 uniform spin chain compound Bi6V3O16(Bi4V2O10.66). In the low-temperature α phase, the magnetic ions (V4+) are arranged in one-dimensional chains. The magnetic susceptibility shows a broad maximum around 50 K signifying a short-range magnetic order. Heat capacity measurements also reveal low-dimensional magnetism. The 51V magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance measurements clearly show that the magnetic V4+ and nonmagnetic V5+ species are located on different crystallographic si…
We report the experimental study on the structural and magnetic properties of a new ternary intermetallic compound $\mathrm{Sm_2AgSi_3}$. The properties of the sample were investigated in detail by X-ray diffraction, dc-magnetization, and heat capacity measurements. The polycrystalline compound of $\mathrm{Sm_2AgSi_3}$ crystallizes in the $\mathrm{ThSi_2}$-type tetragonal structure (space group ${I_{4_1}/amd}$). The temperature-dependent dc-magnetization and heat capacity results demonstrate that the compound undergoes ferromagnetic behaviour with a Curie temperature ($T_C$) of 14 K. The large…
We have investigated the magnetic and the superconducting properties of the hybrid ruthenate-cuprate compound RuSr_{2}GdCu_{2}O_{8} by means of zero-field muon spin rotation- (ZF-$μ$SR) and DC magnetization measurements. The DC-magnetisation data establish that this material exhibits ferromagnetic order of the Ru-moments ($μ(Ru) \approx 1 μ_{B}$) below T_{Curie} = 133 K and becomes superconducting at a much lower temperature T_c = 16 K. The ZF-$μ$SR experiments indicate that the ferromagnetic phase is homogeneous on a microscopic scale and accounts for most of the sample volume. They also sugg…
Specific heat and magnetization measurements have been carried out under a range of magnetic fields on single crystals of Ca3Co2O6. This compound is composed of Ising magnetic chains that are arranged on a triangular lattice. The intrachain and interchain couplings are ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic, respectively. This situation gives rise to geometrical frustration, that bears some similarity to the classical problem of a two-dimensional Ising triangular antiferromagnet. This paper reports on the ordering process at low-T and the possibility of one-dimensional features at high-T.
We present the results of magnetic measurements on Nd6Co(1.67)Si3, a compound recently reported to crystallize in a hexagonal structure (space group P6_3/m) and to undergo long range magnetic ordering below 84 K. The results reveal that the magnetism of this compound is quite complex with additional magnetic anomalies near 50 and 20 K. There are qualitative changes in the isothermal magnetization behavior with the variation of temperature. Notably, there is a field-induced spin reorientation as the temperature is lowered below 20 K. A finding we stress is that this transition is discontinuous …
We present the high-precision magnetization data of the valence fluctuating heavy fermion superconductor $β$-YbAlB$_4$ in a wide temperature range from 0.02 K to 320 K spanning four orders of magnitude. We made detailed analyses of the $T/B$ scaling of the magnetization, and firmly confirmed the unconventional zero-field quantum criticality (QC) without tuning. We examined other possible scaling relationship such as $T/(B-B_c)^δ$ scaling, and confirmed that $δ= 1$ provides the best quality of the fit with an upper bound on the critical magnetic field $\vert B_c \vert <0.2$~mT. We further discu…
The Heisenberg model on a face center cubic (fcc) lattice is a typical three-dimensional frustrated spin system expected to have magnetization plateaus and supersolid phases. There are model compounds $A_2$CoTeO$_6$ ($A$ = Ca, Sr, Pb) for the fcc lattice but with lattice distortions. Motivated by the presence of the compounds, we investigate the ground state of the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on a tetragonally distorted fcc lattice in the magnetic field using a large-size cluster mean-field method for the sake of finding new supersolid phases. We find five supersolid phases in …
We report on the single crystal growth and anisotropic physical properties of CeAgAs$_2$. The compound crystallizes as on ordered variant of the HfCuSi$_2$-type crystal structure and adopts the orthorhombic space group $Pmca$~(\#57) with two symmetry inequivalent cerium atomic positions in the unit cell. The orthorhombic crystal structure of our single crystal was confirmed from the powder x-ray diffraction and from electron diffraction patterns obtained from the transmission electron microscope. The anisotropic physical properties have been investigated on a good quality single crystal by mea…
We report the results of dc and ac magnetization measurements as a function of temperature (1.8 - 300 K) for the spin chain compound, Ca$_3$CoRhO$_6$, which has been recently reported to exhibit a partially disordered antiferromagnetic (PDAF) structure in the range 30 - 90 K and spin-glass freezing below 30 K. We observe an unexpectedly large frequency dependence of ac susceptibility in the T range 30 - 90 K, typical of superparamagnets. In addition, we find that there is no difference in the isothermal remanent magnetization behavior for the two regimes below 90 K. These findings call for mor…
We measured the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility and specific heat and the magnetic-field dependence of the magnetization of CuInVO$_5$. An antiferromagnetically ordered state appears below $T_{\rm N} = 2.7$ K. We observed a $\frac{1}{2}$ quantum magnetization plateau above 30 T at 1.3 K. We show that the spin system consists of antiferromagnetic spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ tetramers with $J_1 = 240 \pm 20$ and $J_2 = -142 \pm 10$ K for the intratetramer interactions.
Geometrically frustrated spin-chain compounds such as Ca3Co2O6 exhibit extremely slow relaxation under a changing magnetic field. Consequently, both low-temperature laboratory experiments and Monte Carlo simulations have shown peculiar out-of-equilibrium magnetization curves, which arise from trapping in metastable configurations. In this work we simulate this phenomenon in a superconducting quantum annealing processor, allowing us to probe the impact of quantum fluctuations on both equilibrium and dynamics of the system. Increasing the quantum fluctuations with a transverse field reduces the …
Spin-spin correlations and microscopic origin of net magnetization in the spin-1 trimer chain compound CaNi3P4O14 have been investigated by powder neutron diffraction. The present study reveals a 3D long-range magnetic ordering below 16 K where the magnetic structure consists of ferromagnetic trimers that are coupled ferromagnetically along the spin-chain. The moment components along the a and c axes arrange antiferromagnetically. Our study establishes that the uncompensated moment components along the b axis result in a net magnetization per unit cell. The magnetic structure, determined in th…
The strongly correlated system Ho11B12 with boron sublattice Jahn-Teller instability and nanoscale electronic phase separation (dynamic charge stripes) was studied in detail by inelastic neutron scattering (INS), magnetometry and heat capacity measurements at temperatures in the range 3-300 K. From the analysis of registered INS spectra, we determined parameters of the cubic crystal field at holmium sites, B4=- 0.333 meV and B6= -2.003 meV (in Stevens notations), with an unconventional large ratio B6/B4 pointing on the dominant role of conduction electrons in the formation of a crystal field p…
Detailed magnetization measurements, M(T,H,theta), were performed on single crystals of TbPtIn and TmAgGe (both members of the hexagonal Fe_2P/ZrNiAl structure type), for the magnetic field H applied perpendicular to the crystallographic c axis. These data allowed us to identify, for each compound, the easy-axes for the magnetization, which coincided with high symmetry directions ([120] for TbPtIn and [110] for TmAgGe). For fixed orientations of the field along each of the two six-fold symmetry axes, a number of magnetically ordered phases is being revealed by M(H,T) measurements below T_N. Mo…
We report on detailed low temperature measurements of the magnetization, the specific heat and the electrical resistivity on high quality CeRuSn single crystals. The compound orders antiferromagnetically at $T_{\rm N} = 2.8$ K with the Ce$^{3+}$ ions locked within the $a-c$ plane of the monoclinic structure. Magnetization shows that below $T_{\rm N}$ CeRuSn undergoes a metamagnetic transition when applying a magnetic field of 1.5 and 0.8 T along the $a$ and $c$--axis, respectively. This transition manifests in a tremendous negative jump of $\sim 25$% in the magnetoresistance. The value of the …
