We present the results of magnetic measurements on Nd6Co(1.67)Si3, a compound recently reported to crystallize in a hexagonal structure (space group P6_3/m) and to undergo long range magnetic ordering below 84 K. The results reveal that the magnetism of this compound is quite complex with additional magnetic anomalies near 50 and 20 K. There are qualitative changes in the isothermal magnetization behavior with the variation of temperature. Notably, there is a field-induced spin reorientation as the temperature is lowered below 20 K. A finding we stress is that this transition is discontinuous for 1.8K in the virgin curve, but the first order character appears only after a field-cycling for a narrow higher temperature range near 5 K. Thus, this compound serves as an example for the stabilisation of first-order transition induced by magnetic-field-cycling. The issues of 'Phase co-existence' and 'meta-stability' after a field-cycling at low temperatures in this compound are also addressed.
We report the results of ac and dc magnetic susceptibility (chi), heat-capacity (C), isothermal magnetization and isothermal remanent magnetization measurements on the compound, Sr3CuRhO6, crystallizing in a K4CdCl6-derived monoclinic structure. The magnetization data reveal distinct magnetic anomalies near 6 and 12 K with decreasing temperature (T). While the transition below (To=) 6K appears to be of a spin-glass-type as inferred from all the data, the one at 12 K is not typical of bulk ferromagnetism in contrast to an earlier proposal. In the range 6 to 12 K, the dc chi obeys the theoretica…
The compounds, Gd6Co1.67Si3 and Tb6Co1.67Si3, recently reported to form in a Ce6Ni2Si3-derived hexagonal structure (space group: P6_3 / m) and to order magnetically below 295 and 190 K respectively, have been investigated by detailed magnetization (M) studies in the temperature interval 1.8-330 K as a function of magnetic field (H). The points of emphasis are: We observe multiple steps in the M(H) curve for the Tb compound at 1.8 K while increasing H, but these steps do not appear in the reverse cycle of H. At higher temperatures, such steps are absent. However, this 'staircase' behavior of M(…
We bring out novel dielectric behavior of a spin-chain compound, Ca3Co2O6, undergoing Neel order at (T_N=) 24 K. It is found that the virgin curve in the plot of isothermal dielectric constant versus magnetic-field lies outside the 'butterfly-shaped' envelope curve well below T_N (e.g., 2.6 K), with a signature of a partial arrest of the high-field magnetoelectric ME) phase in zero-field after travelling through magnetic-field-induced magnetic transitions. This behavior is in contrast to that observed in the isothermal magnetization data. Thus, this work brings out a novel case for 'phase-coex…
We report the magnetic, heat-capacity, dielectric and magnetodielectric (MDE) behaviour of a Haldane spin-chain compound containing light rare-earth ion, Nd2BaNiO5, in detail, as a function of temperature (T) and magnetic field (H) down to 2 K. In addition to the well-known long range antiferromagnetic order setting in at (T_N=) 48 K as indicated in dc magnetization (M), we have observed another magnetic transition near 10 K; this transition appears to be of a glassy-type which vanishes with a marginal application of external magnetic field (even H= 100 Oe). There are corresponding anomalies i…
The results of dc and ac magnetization, heat-capacity, 57Fe Moessbauer spectroscopy, dielectric, pyroelectric current and isothermal magneto-capacitance measurements on a recently reported lithium-based oxide, Li3FeRuO6, related to LiCoO2-type rhombohedral structure (space group, R-3m) are presented. The results reveal that the compound undergoes spin-glass freezing below 15 K. There is a peak around 34 K in pyroelectric data, which can not be attributed to ferroelectricity, but to the phenomenon of thermally stimulated depolarization current. As revealed by magnetocapacitance data above and b…
We report temperature (T) dependence of dc magnetization, electrical resistivity (rho(T)), and heat-capacity of rare-earth (R) compounds, Gd3RuSn6 and Tb3RuSn6, which are found to crystallize in the Yb3CoSn6-type orthorhombic structure (space group: Cmcm). The results establish that there is an onset of antiferromagnetic order near (T_N) 19 and 25 K respectively. In addition, we find that there is another magnetic transition for both the cases around 14 and 17 K respectively. In the case of the Gd compound, the spin-scattering contribution to rho is found to increase below 75 K as the material…
We report the results of magnetic, heat-capacity, electrical and magnetoresistance measurements on Ho4RhAl and Er4RhAl, characterized by 3 sites for rare-earths (R). Antiferromagnetic ordering sets in at (T_N =) about 8.8 and 4.0 K respectively. While Ho compound appears to enter into a complex spin-glass phase at T less thanT_N (at nearly 5 K), spin-glass component appears to set in essentially almost at T_N for the Er case. The loss of the spin-disorder contribution in the magnetically ordered state is not pronounced, mimicking that in Gd2PdSi3, a compound which now attracts interest in the …
The results of dc magnetization, heat capacity, electrical resistivity (rho) and magnetoresistance measurements are reported in detail for the compounds, RCuAs2 for R= Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, and Er, crystallizing in HfCuSi2-type tetragonal structure, with the aim of bringing out anomalies among 'normal' (that is, other than Ce and Yb) rare-earths. The results establish that all these compounds order antiferromagnetically at low temperatures with deviations from de Gennes scaling. Isothermal magnetization (M) data below respective Neel temperatures (TN) reveal the existence of field-induce…
High-resolution DC magnetization and AC-specific heat data of the cubic helimagnet FeGe have been measured as function of temperature and magnetic field. The magnetization data as well as the isothermal susceptibility data confirm the complexity of the magnetic phase diagram in the vicinity of the onset of long-rang magnetic order (Tc = 278.5 K) and the existence of a segmented A-phase region. Moreover, these data revealed independent and clear indications of phase boundaries and crossovers within the A-phase region. Together with the anomalies in the specific-heat data around Tc and at small …
We report the results of ac and dc magnetic susceptibility and isothermal magnetization measurements (T= 2-300 K) on the single crystals of a metallic kagome lattice, Tb3Ru4Al12, reported recently to undergo reentrant magnetism with the onset of long range antiferromagnetic order below (TN=) 22K. The magnetization data obtained on the crystal with the c-axis orientation along magnetic-field reveal spin-glass-like characteristics near 17 K (below TN). However, for the orientation along basal plane, such glassy anomalies are not observable above 2 K. In this respect, this compound behaves like a…
We report complex magnetic, magnetoresistance (MR) and magnetocaloric properties of Gd4RhAl and Tb4RhAl forming in the Gd4RhIn type cubic structure. Though the synthesis of the compounds was reported long ago, to our knowledge, no attempt was made to investigate the properties of these compounds. The present results of ac and dc magnetization, electrical resistivity and heat-capacity measurements down to 1.8 K establish that these compounds undergo antiferromagnetic order initially, followed by complex spin-glass features with decreasing temperature. These characteristic temperatures are: For …
We have carried out magnetization, heat capacity, electrical and magnetoresistance measurements (2-300 K) for the polycrystalline form of intermetallic compounds, R2RhSi3 (R= Gd, Tb, and Dy), forming in a AlB2 derived hexagonal structure with a triangular R network. This work was primarily motivated by a revival of interest on Gd2PdSi3 after about two decades in the field of Toplogical Hall Effect due to magnetic skyrmions. We report here that these compounds are characterized by double antiferromagnetic transitions (T_N= 13.5 and 12 K for Gd, 13.5 and 6.5 K for Tb; 6.5 and 2.5 for Dy), but an…
The compound, Tb5Si3, crystallizing in Mn5Si3-type hexagonal structure, was recently reported by us to exhibit a sudden and huge enhancement in electrical resistivity (rho) at a critical magnetic field (H_cr) in the magnetically ordered state (<70 K) tracking isothermal magnetization (M) behavior. We have investigated the influence of external pressure (<15 kbar) and negative chemical pressure induced by Ge substitution for Si on M and rho as a function of temperature (5-300 K) and magnetic field (<120 kOe), with the primary aim of understanding the field-induced anomalies. Focussing on isothe…
Anomalies are a powerful way to gain insight into possible lattice regularizations of a quantum field theory. In this work, we argue that the continuum anomaly for a given symmetry can be matched by a manifestly-symmetric, local, lattice regularization in the same spacetime dimensionality only if (i) the symmetry action is offsite, or (ii) if the continuum anomaly is reproduced exactly on the lattice. We consider lattice regularizations of a class of prototype models of QCD: the (1+1)-dimensional asymptotically-free Grassmannian nonlinear sigma models (NLSMs) with a $θ$ term. Using the Grassma…
We study continuum quantum field theories in 2+1 dimensions with time-reversal symmetry $\cal T$. The standard relation ${\cal T}^2=(-1)^F$ is satisfied on all the "perturbative operators" i.e. polynomials in the fundamental fields and their derivatives. However, we find that it is often the case that acting on more complicated operators ${\cal T}^2=(-1)^F {\cal M}$ with $\cal M$ a non-trivial global symmetry. For example, acting on monopole operators, $\cal M$ could be $\pm1$ depending on the magnetic charge. We study in detail $U(1)$ gauge theories with fermions of various charges. Such a mo…
The magnetoelectric (ME) effects are investigated in a cubic compound SrCuTe2O6, in which uniform Cu2+ (S=1/2) spin chains with considerable spin frustration exhibit a concomitant antiferromagnetic transition and dielectric constant peak at TN=5.5 K. Pyroelectric Jp(T) and magnetoelectric current JME(H) measurements in the presence of a bias electric field are used to reveal that SrCuTe2O6 shows clear variations of Jp(T) across TN at constant magnetic fields. Furthermore, isothermal measurements of JME(H) also develop clear peaks at finite magnetic fields, of which traces are consistent with t…
The detailed behavior of the in-plane infrared-active vibrational modes has been determined in AFe$_2$As$_2$ (A$\,=\,$Ca, Sr, and Ba) above and below the structural and magnetic transition at $T_N=$172, 195 and 138 K, respectively. Above $T_N$, two infrared-active $E_u$ modes are observed. In all three compounds, below $T_N$ the low-frequency $E_u$ mode is observed to split into upper and lower branches; with the exception of the Ba material, the oscillator strength across the transition is conserved. In the Ca and Sr materials, the high-frequency $E_u$ mode splits into an upper and a lower br…
We report experimental results on the heat conductivity κof the S=1/2 spin chain compounds TiOBr and TiOCl for temperatures 5K<T<300K and magnetic fields up to 14. Surprisingly, we find no evidence of a significant magnetic contribution to κ, which is in stark contrast to recent results on S=1/2 spin chain cuprates. Despite this unexpected result, the thus predominantly phononic heat conductivity of these spin-Peierls compounds exhibits a very unusual behavior. In particular, we observe strong anomalies at the phase transitions Tc1 and Tc2. Moreover, we find an overall but anisotropic suppress…
Measurements of the heat capacity C(T,H) of the one-dimensional quantum magnet TiOCl are presented for temperatures 2K < T < 300K and magnetic fields up to 5T. Distinct anomalies at 91K and 67K signal two subsequent phase transitions. The lower of these transitions clearly is of first order and seems to be related to the spin degrees of freedom. The transition at 92K probably involves the lattice and/or orbital moments. A detailed analysis of the data reveals that the entropy change through both transitions is surprisingly small (~ 0.1R), pointing to the existence strong fluctuations well into…
Substantial amounts of the transition metals Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni can be substituted for Li in single crystalline Li$_2$(Li$_{1-x}T_x$)N. Isothermal and temperature-dependent magnetization measurements reveal local magnetic moments with magnitudes significantly exceeding the spin-only value. The additional contributions stem from unquenched orbital moments that lead to rare-earth-like behavior of the magnetic properties. Accordingly, extremely large magnetic anisotropies have been found. Most notably, the magnetic anisotropy alternates as easy-plane $\rightarrow$ easy-axis $\rightarrow$ easy-pla…
We investigated the magnetic phase diagram of the first Pr-based heavy fermion superconductor PrOs4Sb12 by means of high-resolution dc magnetization measurements in low temperatures down to 0.06K. The temperature dependence of the magnetization M(T) at 0.1kOe exhibits two distinct anomalies at Tc1=1.83K and Tc2=1.65K, in agreement with the specific heat measurements at zero field. Increasing magnetic field H, both Tc1(H) and Tc2(H) move toward lower temperatures without showing a tendency of intersecting to each other. Above 10kOe, the transition at Tc2(H) appears to merge into a line of the p…
The spinel NiCr$_2$O$_4$ is known to show a ferrimagnetic transition at $T_c = 70$~K, and magneto-structural transitions at $T_s = 30$~K and $T_o = 20$~K\@. We present a detailed magnetic and magnetocaloric effect (MCE $= -ΔS_{M}(T)$) study across these transitions. The $-ΔS_{M}(T)$ shows a positive anomaly at $T_c$, $T_s$, and $T_o$. In addition to these anomalies, we report a new unreported feature at $T \approx 8.5$~K where $-ΔS_{M}(T)$ shows a negative anomaly or the inverse MCE. An Arrot plot of the isothermal magnetization data reveals important information about the nature of the possib…
The area of research to discover new Li containing materials and to understand their physical properties has been of constant interest due to applications potential for rechargeable batteries. Here, we present the results of magnetic investigations on a Li compound, Li3Ni2RuO6, which was believed to be a ferrimagnet below 80K. While our neutron diffraction (ND) and isothermal magnetization (M) data support ferrimagnetism, more detailed magnetic studies establish that this ferrimagnetic phase exhibits some features similar to spin-glasses. In addition, we find another broad magnetic anomaly aro…
