We report on the crystallographic information such as lattice parameters, atomic positions, bond lengths and angles, and local crystalline distortion size and mode of single-crystal YCrO$_3$ compound by a high-resolution synchrotron X-ray diffraction study. The data was collected at 120 K (below $T_\textrm{N} \sim$ 141.5 K), 300 K (within [$T_\textrm{N}$, $T_\textrm{C}$]), and 500 K (above $T_\textrm{C} \sim$ 473 K). Taking advantages of high intensity and brilliance of synchrotron X-rays, we are able to refine collected patterns with the noncentrosymmetric monoclinic structural model ($P12_11$, No. 4) that was proposed previously but detailed structural parameters have not determined yet. Meanwhile, we calculated patterns with the centrosymmetric orthorhombic space group (\emph{Pmnb}, No. 62) for a controlled study. Lattice constants \emph{a}, \emph{b}, and \emph{c} as well as unit-cell volume almost increase linearly upon warming. We observed more dispersive distributions of bond length and angle and local distortion strength with the $P12_11$ space group. This indicates that (i) The local distortion mode of Cr2O$_6$ at 120 K correlates the formation of the canted antiferromagnetic order by Cr1-Cr2 spin interactions mainly through intermediate of O3 and O4 ions. (ii) The strain-balanced Cr1-O3(O4) and Cr2-O5(O5) bonds as well as the local distortion modes of Cr1O$_6$ and Cr2O$_6$ octohedra at 300 K may be a microscopic origin of the previously-reported dielectric anomaly. Our study demonstrates that local crystalline distortion is a key factor for the formation of ferroelectric order and provides a complete set of crystallography for a full understanding of the interesting magnetic and quasi-ferroelectric properties of YCrO$_3$ compound.
Temperature dependent synchrotron x-ray diffraction and extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) studies were performed to understand the role of structural characteristics in driving the magnetoelectric mul- tiferoic properties of GdCrO3. The results suggest that the distortion in the structure appears to be associated with the off-center displacement of Gd-atoms together with octahedral rotations via displacement of the oxygen ions in GdCrO3. In addition, the magnetic coupling below magnetic transition temperature leads to additional distortion in the system via magnetostriction effe…
Magnetization measurements and time-of-flight neutron powder-diffraction studies on the high-temperature (300--980 K) magnetism and crystal structure (321--1200 K) of a pulverized YCrO$_3$ single crystal have been performed. Temperature-dependent inverse magnetic susceptibility coincides with a piecewise linear function with five regimes, with which we fit a Curie-Weiss law and calculate the frustration factor $f$. The fit results indicate a formation of magnetic polarons between 300 and 540 K and a very strong magnetic frustration. By including one factor $η$ that represents the degree of spi…
We have studied a nearly stoichiometric insulating Y$_{0.97(2)}$Cr$_{0.98(2)}$O$_{3.00(2)}$ single crystal by performing measurements of magnetization, heat capacity, and neutron diffraction. Albeit that the YCrO$_3$ compound behaviors like a soft ferromagnet with a coersive force of $\sim$ 0.05 T, there exist strong antiferromagnetic (AFM) interactions between Cr$^{3+}$ spins due to a strongly negative paramagnetic Curie-Weiss temperature, i.e., -433.2(6) K. The coexistence of ferromagnetism and antiferromagnetism may indicate a canted AFM structure. The AFM phase transition occurs at $T_\tex…
Temperature-dependent synchrotron powder diffraction on Cs0.83(Fe0.86Se)2 revealed first order I4/m to I4/mmm structural transformation around 216°C associated with the disorder of the Fe vacancies. Irreversibility observed during the transition is likely associated with a mobility of intercalated Alkali atoms. Pressure-dependent synchrotron powder diffraction on Cs0.83(Fe1-ySe)2, Rb0.85(Fe1-ySe)2 and K0.8(Fe1-ySe)2 (y ~ 0.14) indicated that the I4/m superstructure reflections are present up to pressures of 120 kbar. This may indicate that the ordering of the Fe vacancies is present in both su…
The Ho2Ti2O7, Er2Ti2O7 and Yb2Ti2O7 pyrochlores were studied by synchrotron X-ray diffraction to determine whether the (002) peak, forbidden in the pyrochlore space group Fd-3m but observed in single crystal neutron scattering measurements, is present due to a deviation of their pyrochlore structure from Fd-3m symmetry. Synchrotron diffraction measurements on precisely synthesized stoichiometric and non-stoichiometric powders and a crushed floating zone crystal of Ho2Ti2O7 revealed that the (002) reflection is absent in all cases to a sensitivity of approximately one part in 30,000 of the stro…
We report on the crystallographic structure of the layered compound Pb3Mn7O15. Previous analysis based on laboratory X-ray data at room temperature gave contradictory results in terms of the description of the unit cell. Motivated by recent magnetic bulk measurements of this system, we re-investigated the chemical structure with high-resolution synchrotron powder diffraction at temperatures between 15 K and 295 K. Our results show that the crystal structure of stoichiometric Pb3Mn7O15 has a pronounced 2-dimensional character and can be described in the orthorhombic space group Pnma.
We have grown intermetallic ErPd$_2$Si$_2$ single crystals employing laser-diodes with the floating-zone method. The temperature-dependent crystallography was determined using synchrotron and in-house X-ray powder diffraction measurements from 20 to 500 K. The diffraction patterns fit well with the tetragonal $I$4/$mmm$ space group (No. 139) with two chemical formulas within one unit cell. Our synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction study shows that the refined lattice constants are $a$ = 4.10320(2) Å, $c$ = 9.88393(5) Å at 298 K and $a$ = 4.11737(2) Å, $c$ = 9.88143(5) Å at 500 K, resulting in t…
In the quest of understanding significant variations in the physical, chemical and electronic properties of the novel functional materials, low temperature Synchrotron X-ray Diffraction (LT-SXRD) measurements on CTO (a type-II) and CMTO (a type-I) multiferroics are presented. Magnetic phase diagram of CTO shows multiple magnetic transitions at zero fields, whereas, in CMTO, 20 K enhancement in the antiferromagnetic transition temperature is observed followed by near room temperature Griffiths phase. Rietveld analysis on LT-SXRD data of both the samples indicates important observations. For bot…
The low temperature antiferrodistortive phase transition in a pseudo-tetragonal composition of PZT with x=0.525 is investigated through a combined synchrotron x-ray and neutron powder diffraction study. It is shown that the superlattice peaks cannot be correctly accounted for in the Rietveld refinement using R3c or R3c+Cm structural models, whereas the Cc space group gives excellent fits to the superlattice peaks as well as to the perovskite peaks. This settles at rest the existing controversies about the structure of the ground state phase of PZT in the MPB region.

High-energy synchrotron X-ray diffraction was utilized to study the mechanical response of the f.c.c $δ$-hydride phase, the intermetallic precipitation with hexagonal C14 lave phase and the $α$-Zr phase in the Zircaloy-4 materials with a hydride rim/blister structure near one surface of the material during in-situ uniaxial tension experiment at 200 \si{\degreeCelsius}. The f.c.c $δ$ was the only hydride phase observed in the rim/blister structure. The conventional Rietveld refinement was applied to measure the macro-strain equivalent response of the three phases. Two regions were delineated in…
We used by in-situ high energy X-ray diffraction to inestigate the deformation behavior of Grade 2 commercially pure titanium that was hydrogen charged to form hydrides. The results showed that the peak broadening in the diffraction patterns are due to the high internal and interphase stresses generated within and around hydrides due to the volume expansion induced by the phase transformation. The hydrides exhibit typical high strength but brittle secondary phase behavior, which undertakes more elastic strain than matrix and is the location where cracks are first generated. Interestingly, the …
There is a long standing technological problem in which a stress dwell during cyclic loading at room temperature in Ti causes a significant fatigue life reduction. It is thought that localised time dependent plasticity in soft grains oriented for easy plastic slip leads to load shedding and an increase in stress within a neighbouring hard grain poorly oriented for easy slip. Quantifying this time dependent plasticity process is key to successfully predicting the complex cold dwell fatigue problem. This work uses a novel approach of in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction during stress relaxation…

The incorporation of noble metal nanoparticles, displaying localized surface plasmon resonance, in the active area of donor-acceptor bulk-heterojunction organic photovoltaic devices is an industrially compatible light trapping strategy, able to guarantee better absorption of the incident photons and give an efficiency improvement between 12% and 38%. In the present work, we investigate the effect of Au and Ag nanoparticles blended with P3HT: PCBM on the P3HT crystallization dynamics by synchrotron grazing incidence X-ray diffraction. We conclude that the presence of (1) 80nm Au, (2) mix of 5nm…
The transformation between the metallic ($β$) and semi-conducting ($α$) allotropes of tin is still not well understood. The phase transition temperature stated in the literature, 286.2 K, seems to be inconsistent with recent calorimetric measurements. In this paper, this intriguing aspect has been explored in Sn and Sn-Cu (alloyed 0.5% Cu by weight) using temperature resolved synchrotron x-ray diffraction measurements performed at the Indus-2 facility. Additionally, the $α\rightleftharpoons β$ Sn transition has been recorded using in-situ heating/cooling experiments in a scanning electron micr…
Hexagonal metals have anisotropic coefficients of thermal expansion causing grain-level internal stresses during heating. High energy x-ray diffraction microscopy, a non-destructive, in situ, micromechanical and microstructural characterization technique, has been used to determine the anisotropic coefficients of thermal expansion (CTEs) for Ti-7Al. Two samples of polycrystalline $α$-phase Ti-7Al were continuously heated from room temperature to 850 $^\circ$C while far-field HEDM scans were collected. The results showed a change in the ratio of the CTEs in the 'a' and 'c' directions which expl…
The controversies about the structure of the true ground state of pseudorhombohedral compositions of Pb(ZrxTi1-x)O3 (PZT) are addressed using a 6% Sr2+ substituted sample with x=0.550. Sound velocity measurements reveal a phase transition at Tc~279K. The temperature dependence of FWHM of (h00)pc peaks and the unit cell volume also show anomalies around 279K even though there is no indication of any change of space group in the synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction (SXRD) patterns. The neutron powder diffraction patterns reveal appearance of superlattice peaks below Tc~279K confirming the existe…
Synchrotron powder diffraction data were measured on various gas hydrates prepared at different fugacities and recovered to low temperatures. The data extend to sin θ/λ values of at least 1.01 Å-1, in some cases up to 1.48 Å-1, i.e. at least 3 times further in reciprocal space than the best single crystal data obtained so far. Here the results of CO2-hydrate are presented in detail. Structural information is obtained from Rietveld refinements to unprecedented precision. All H-bonded O-O distances are found to be close to 2.75-2.76 Å, i.e. very close to the values in ice Ih; differences between…

Structural investigation on $Co_{3-x}Mn_xTeO_6$; ($0 \lt x \le 2$) solid solutions as a function of Mn concentration using Synchrotron X-ray diffraction (SXRD) and XANES measurements are presented. Phase diagram obtained from Rietveld Refinement on SXRD data as a function of Mn concentration indicates doping disproportionate mixing of both monoclinic (C2/c) and rhombohedral (R-3) structure (for $x \lt 0.5$) while only R-3 symmetry for $x \ge 0.5$. Furthermore, Rietveld analysis on SXRD data shows increase in lattice parameters and average transition metal oxygen (Co/Mn-O) bond lengths for $x \…
The modulated structure of the martensite phase of Ni2MnGa is revisited using high resolution synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction (SXRPD) measurements, which reveals higher order satellite reflections up to the 3rd order and phason broadening of the satellite peaks. The structure refinement, using the (3+1) dimensional superspace group approach, shows that the modulated structure of Ni2MnGa can be described by orthorhombic superspace group Immm(00$γ$)s00 with lattice parameters a= 4.21861(2) Å, b= 5.54696(3) Å, and c= 4.18763(2) Å and an incommensurate modulation wave vector q= 0.43160(3)c*= …
Toward the theoretically observable limit of electron density distribution by single-crystal synchrotron X-ray diffraction: The case of orbitally ordered Ti-3d^1 in YTiO_3
Room temperature angle-dispersive x-ray diffraction measurements on zircon-type TbVO4 and CeVO4 were performed in a diamond-anvil cell up to 50 GPa using neon as pressure-transmitting medium. In TbVO4 we found at 6.4 GPa evidence of a non-reversible pressure-induced structural phase transition from zircon to a scheelite-type structure. A second transition to an M-fergusonite-type structure was found at 33.9 GPa, which is reversible. Zircon-type CeVO4 exhibits two pressure-induced transitions. First an irreversible transition to a monazite-type structure at 5.6 GPa and second at 14.7 GPa a reve…
Dynamic evolution of internal stress, grain growth, and crystallographic texture in arc-evaporated AlTiN thin films using in-situ synchrotron x-ray diffraction
We propose a novel data-driven approach for analyzing synchrotron Laue X-ray microdiffraction scans based on machine learning algorithms. The basic architecture and major components of the method are formulated mathematically. We demonstrate it through typical examples including polycrystalline BaTiO$_3$, multiphase transforming alloys and finely twinned martensite. The computational pipeline is implemented for beamline 12.3.2 at the Advanced Light Source, Lawrence Berkeley National Lab. The conventional analytical pathway for X-ray diffraction scans is based on a slow pattern by pattern cryst…
Microscale stress-geometry interactions in an additively manufactured NiTi cardiovascular stent: A synchrotron dual imaging tomography and diffraction study
Understanding the creep mechanisms and deformation response at different stresses and temperatures is crucial for design using nickel-base superalloys for high-temperature applications. In this study, the creep behaviour of a newly designed superalloy (nominated Alloy 11) at different stress and temperature was systematically investigated using SEM, STEM, EBSD and synchrotron X-ray diffraction. Material properties and mechanical response were analysed by considering such properties as lattice parameters and misfit, phase volume fraction, microstrain in reference and crept samples. Combining Synchrotron X-ray Diffraction, Mechanistic Modeling, and Machine Learning for In Situ Subsurface Temperature Quantification during Laser Melting
We present here results of high resolution synchrotron x-ray diffraction (SXRD) and dielectric studies in conjunction with Landau theory considerations on (Pb0.94Sr0.06)(ZrxTi1-x)O3 compositions in the vicinity of the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) to find evidence for the flattening of the free energy surface at the MPB proposed in recent ab-initio studies on strongly piezoelectric ceramics. SXRD results reveal that the tetragonal and pseudorhombohedral monoclinic compositions with x=0.515 and 0.550 transform directly into the cubic paraelectric phase, whereas for 0.520<x<0.545, the pseudo…

We present synchrotron x-ray diffraction, neutron powder diffraction and time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering measurements on the rare earth pyrochlore oxide Nd2Zr2O7 to study the ordered state magnetic structure and cystal field states. The structural characterization by high-resolution synchrotron x-ray diffraction confirms that the pyrochlore structure has no detectable O vacancies or Nd/Zr site mixing. The neutron diffraction reveals long range all-in/all-out antiferromagnetic order below T_N ~ 0.4 K with propagation vector k = (0 0 0) and an ordered moment of 1.26(2) μ_B/Nd at 0.1 …
Room temperature angle-dispersive x-ray diffraction measurements on zircon-type YPO4 and ErPO4, and monazite-type GdPO4, EuPO4, NdPO4, and LaPO4 were performed in a diamond-anvil cell up to 27 GPa using neon as pressure-transmitting medium. In the zircon-structured oxides we found evidence of a reversible pressure-induced structural phase transformation from zircon to a monazite-type structure. The onset of the transition is near 17-20 GPa. In LaPO4 a non-reversible transition is found around 26 GPa, being a barite-type structure proposed for the high-pressure phase. In the other three monazit…
We report high pressure Raman, synchrotron x-ray diffraction and electrical transport studies on Weyl semimetals NbP and TaP along with first-principles density functional theoretical (DFT) analysis. The frequencies of first-order Raman modes of NbP harden with increasing pressure and exhibit a slope change at P$_c$ $\sim$ 9 GPa, and its resistivity exhibits a minimum at P$_c$. The pressure-dependent volume of NbP exhibits a change in its bulk modulus from 207 GPa to 243 GPa at P$_c$. Using DFT calculations, we show that these anomalies are associated with pressure induced Lifshitz transition …

Superconductivity in iron selenides has experienced a rapid growth, but not without major inconsistencies in the reported properties. For alkali-intercalated iron selenides, even the structure of the superconducting phase is a subject of debate, in part because the onset of superconductivity is affected much more delicately by stoichiometry and preparation than in cuprate or pnictide superconductors. If high-quality, pure, superconducting intercalated iron selenides are ever to be made, the intertwined physics and chemistry must be explained by systematic studies of how these materials form an…
For a symmetry consistent theoretical description of the multiferroic phase of Ba$_2$CoGe$_2$O$_7$ a precise knowledge of its crystal structure is a prerequisite. In our previous synchrotron X-ray diffraction experiment on multiferroic Ba$_2$CoGe$_2$O$_7$ at room temperature we found forbidden reflections that favour the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic symmetry lowering of the titled compound. Here, we report the results of room-temperature single-crystal diffraction studies with both hot and cold neutrons to differentiate between the real symmetry lowering and multiple diffraction (the Renninger e…
Ever since the very first human-made knapped tools, the control of fracture propagation in brittle materials has been a vector of technological development. Nowadays, a broad range of applications relies on crack propagation control, from the mitigation of damages, e.g., from impacts in glass screens or windshields, to industrial processes harnessing fracture to achieve clean cuts over large distances. Yet, studying the fracture in real time is a challenging task, since cracks can propagate up to a few km/s in materials that are often opaque. Here, we report on the in situ investigation of cra…
Self-organized monocrystalline Au nanoparticles with potential applications in plasmonics are grown in a SrTiO$_3$ matrix by a novel two-step deposition process. The crystalline preferred orientation of these Au nanoparticles is investigated by synchrotron hard x-ray diffraction. Nanoparticles preferentially align with the (111) direction along the substrate normal (001), whereas two in-plane orientations are found with $[110]_{SrTiO_3} \: || \: [110]_{Au}$ and $[100]_{SrTiO_3} \: || \: [110]_{Au}$. Additionally, a smaller diffraction signal from nanoparticles with the (001) direction parallel…
The solid solution Cs2-xRbxSnCu3F12 (x = 0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5) has been investigated crystallographically between 100 and 300 K using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction and, in the case of x = 0, neutron powder diffraction.
We report a benchmark experiment that demonstrates shortening of hard x-ray pulses in a synchrotron-based optical pump - x-ray probe experiment. The pulse shortening device, a picosecond Bragg switch, reduces the temporal resolution of an incident x-ray pulse to 7.5 ps. We employ the Bragg switch to monitor propagating sound waves in nanometer-thin epitaxial films. With the experimental data we infer pulse duration, diffraction efficiency and switching contrast of the device. A detailed efficiency analysis shows, that the switch can deliver up to 1010 photons/sec in high-repetition rate synchr…
We report the first high-field x-ray diffraction experiment using synchrotron x-rays and pulsed magnetic fields exceeding 30 T. Lattice deformation due to a magnetic-field-induced valence transition in YbInCu4 is studied. It has been found that the Bragg reflection profile at 32 K changes significantly at around 27 T due to the structural transition. In the vicinity of the transition field the low-field and the high-field phases are observed simultaneously as the two distinct Bragg reflection peaks: This is a direct evidence of the fact that the field-induced valence state transition is the fi…
Precise lattice parameter measurements in single crystals are achievable, in principle, by X-ray multiple diffraction (MD) experiments. Tiny sample misalignments can compromise systematic usage of MD in studies where accuracy is an important issue. In this work, theoretical treatment and experimental methods for correcting residual misalignment errors are presented and applied to probe the induced strain of buried InAs quantum dots on GaAs (001) substrates.
We present a multi-purpose mirror furnace designed for synchrotron X-ray experiments. The furnace can reach up to ~1600°C with stability better than 2°C, and heating and cooling rates up to 30°C/s. The contact-less design enables samples to be heated either in air or in a controlled atmosphere in a capillary tube. The temperature was calibrated via the thermal expansion of an a-iron grain. Temperature profiles in the y and z axes were measured by scanning a th…
Co doped ZnV2O4 has been investigated by Synchrotron X-ray diffraction, Magnetization measurement and Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) analysis. With Co doping in the Zn site the system moves towards the itinerant electron limit. From Synchrotron and magnetization measurement it is observed that there is an effect in bond lengths and lattice parameters around the magnetic transition temperature. The EXAFS study indicates that Co ion exists in the High spin state in Co doped ZnV2O4.
Investment in brighter sources and larger detectors has resulted in an explosive rise in the data collected at synchrotron facilities. Currently, human experts extract scientific information from these data, but they cannot keep pace with the rate of data collection. Here, we present three on-the-fly approaches - attribute extraction, nearest-neighbor distance, and cluster analysis - to quickly segment x-ray diffraction (XRD) data into groups with similar XRD profiles. An expert can then analyze representative spectra from each group in detail with much reduced time, but without loss of scient…

A detailed structural model for the indium-induced Si(111)-(4x1) surface reconstruction has been determined by analyzing an extensive set of x-ray-diffraction data recorded with monochromatic ($\hbarω$ = 9.1 keV) synchrotron radiation. The reconstruction is quasi-one-dimensional. The main features in the structure are chains of silicon atoms alternating with zigzag chains of indium atoms on top of an essentially unperturbed silicon lattice. The indium coverage corresponds to one monolayer. The structural model consistently explains all previously published experimental data.

The continuous-symmetry-measure approach has been used for the quantification of the distortion of the coordination polyhedron in alpha-PbF2 revealing an increasing distortion with pressure. keywords here: high pressure, X-ray diffraction, inorganic compounds PACS: 61.10.N2,…
Single-crystal synchrotron x-ray diffraction studies of CeFeAsO reveal strong anisotropy in the charge correlation lengths along or perpendicular to the in-plane antiferromagnetic (AFM) wave-vector at low temperatures, indicating an anisotropic two-dimensional magnetoelastic coupling. The high-resolution setup allows to distinctly monitor each of the twin domains by virtue of a finite misfit angle between them that follows the order parameter. In addition, we find that the in-plane correlations, above the orthorhombic (O)-to-tetragonal (T) transition, are shorter than those in each of the doma…
Research on actinide materials, both basic and applied, has been greatly advanced by the general techniques available from high-intensity photon beams from x-ray synchrotron sources. The most important single reason is that such x-ray sources can work with minute (e.g., microgram) samples, and at this level, the radioactive hazards of actinides are much reduced. We start by discussing the form and encapsulation procedures used for different techniques, then discuss the basic theory for interpreting the results. By reviewing a selection of x-ray diffraction (XRD), resonant elastic x-ray scatter…
