There is a long standing technological problem in which a stress dwell during cyclic loading at room temperature in Ti causes a significant fatigue life reduction. It is thought that localised time dependent plasticity in soft grains oriented for easy plastic slip leads to load shedding and an increase in stress within a neighbouring hard grain poorly oriented for easy slip. Quantifying this time dependent plasticity process is key to successfully predicting the complex cold dwell fatigue problem. This work uses a novel approach of in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction during stress relaxation tests, to quantify the time dependent plasticity. Measured lattice strains from multiple lattice families (21 diffraction rings) were compared with simulated lattice strains from crystal plasticity finite element (CPFE) simulations. The prism slip parameters were found to show stronger strain rate sensitivity compared to basal slip, and this has a significant effect on stress redistribution to hard grain orientations during cold creep.
Crystal-level strain rate sensitivity and temperature sensitivity are investigated in Zircaloy-4 using combined of bending creep test, digital image correlation, electron backscatter detection and thermo-mechanical tensile tests with crystal plasticity modelling. Crystal rate-sensitive properties are extracted from room temperature microscale creep, and temperature sensitivity from thermal polycrystalline responses. Crystal plasticity results show that large microscale creep strain is observed near notch tip increased up to 50% due to cross-slip activation. Grain-level microscale SRS is highly…
The nonequilibrium dynamics of diffusion-mediated plasticity and creep in materials subjected to constant load at high homologous temperatures is studied atomistically using Phase Field Crystal (PFC) methods. Creep stress and grain size exponents obtained for nanopolycrystalline systems, $m \simeq 1.02$ and $p \simeq 1.98$, respectively, closely match those expected for idealized diffusional Nabarro-Herring creep. These exponents are observed in the presence of significant stress-assisted diffusive grain boundary migration, indicating that Nabarro-Herring creep and stress-assisted boundary mig…
The mechanical properties of polycrystalline metals are governed by the interaction of defects that are generated by deformation within the 3D microstructure. In materials that deform by slip, the plasticity is usually highly heterogeneous within the microstructure. Many experimental tools can be used to observe the results of slip events at the free surface of a sample; however, there are only a few methods for imaging these events in the bulk. In this article, the imaging of bulk slip events within the 3D microstructure are enabled by the combined use of X-ray diffraction contrast tomography…
New interatomic potentials describing defects, plasticity and high temperature phase transitions for Ti are presented. Fitting the martensitic hcp-bcc phase transformation temperature requires an efficient and accurate method to determine it. We apply a molecular dynamics (MD) method based on determination of the melting temperature of competing solid phases, and Gibbs-Helmholtz integration, and a lattice-switch Monte Carlo method (LSMC): these agree on the hcp-bcc transformation temperatures to within 2 K. We were able to develop embedded atom potentials which give a good fit to either low or…
In the present work, we propose a novel model coupling phase-field, dislocation density based plasticity and damage. The dislocation density governing equations are constructed based on evolutions of mobile and immobile dislocations. Mechanisms including dislocation multiplication, annihilation, mobile-immobile transfer due to dislocation interactions and block of interfaces are incorporated in the model. Especially, the "swallow-gap" problem surrounding the coarsened second phase, which often appears in dislocation and phase-field coupled simulations, is solved in the present model. Moreover,…
Creep in single crystal Nickel-based superalloys has been a topic of interest since decades, and nowadays simulations are more and more able to complement experiments. In these alloys, the $γ/γ'$ phase microstructure co-evolves with the system of dislocations under load, and understanding the mutual interactions is essential for understanding the resulting creep properties. Predictive modeling thus requires multiphysics frameworks capable of modeling and simulating both the phase and defect microstructures. To do so, we formulate a coupled model of phase-field evolution and continuum dislocati…
There is a long-standing technological problem in which a stress dwell during cyclic loading at room temperature in Ti causes a significant fatigue life reduction. It is thought that localised time dependent plasticity in soft grains favourably oriented for easy plastic slip leads to load shedding and an increase in stress within a neighbouring hard grain poorly oriented for easy slip. Quantifying this time dependent plasticity process is key to understand the complex cold dwell fatigue problem. Knowing the effect of operating temperature and oxygen content on cold dwell fatigue will be benefi…
There are a multitude of applications in which structural materials would be desired to be nondestructively evaluated, while in a component, for plasticity and failure characteristics. In this way, safety and resilience features can be significantly improved. Nevertheless, while failure can be visible through cracks, plasticity is commonly invisible and highly microstructure-dependent. Here, we show that an equation-free method based on principal component analysis is capable of detecting yielding and tertiary creep onset, directly from strain fields that are obtained by digital image correlat…
We extend our earlier shear-transformation-zone (STZ) theory of amorphous plasticity to include the effects of thermally assisted molecular rearrangements. This version of our theory is a substantial revision and generalization of conventional theories of flow in noncrystalline solids. As in our earlier work, it predicts a dynamic transition between jammed and flowing states at a yield stress. Below that yield stress, it now describes thermally assisted creep. We show that this theory accounts for the experimentally observed strain-rate dependence of the viscosity of metallic glasses, and that…
Digital image correlation (DIC) and crystal plasticity simulation were utilised to study cold dwell behaviour in a coarse grain Ti-6Al alloy at 3 different temperatures up to 230 C. Strains extracted from large volume grains were measured during creep by DIC and were used to calibrate the crystal plasticity model. The values of critical resolved shear stresses (CRSS) of the two main slip systems (basal and prismatic) were determined as a function of temperature. Stress along paths across the boundaries of two grain pairs, (1) a `rogue' grain pair and (2) a `non-rogue' grain pair, were determin…
Component failure due to cold dwell fatigue of titanium and its alloys is a long-standing problem which has significant safety and economic implications to the aviation industry. This can be addressed by understanding the governing mechanisms of time dependent plasticity behaviour of Ti at low temperatures. Here, stress relaxation tests were performed at four different temperatures on three major alloy systems: commercially pure titanium (two alloys with different oxygen content), Ti-6Al-4V (two microstructures with differing beta phase fractions) and Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-xMo (two alloys with differ…
Previous studies demonstrate that grain-boundary sliding could accelerate creep rate and give rise to large internal stresses that can lead to damage development, e.g. formation of wedge cracks. The present study provides more insight into the effects of grain-boundary sliding (GBS) on the deformation behaviour of realistic polycrystalline aggregates during creep, through the development of a computational framework which combines: i) the use of interface elements for sliding at grain boundaries, and ii) special triple point (in 2D) or triple line (in 3D) elements to prevent artificial dilatio…
The fracture process of commercially pure titanium was visualized in model materials containing artificial holes. These model materials were fabricated using a femtosecond laser coupled with a diffusion bonding technique to obtain voids in the interior of titanium samples. Changes in void dimensions during in-situ straining were recorded in three dimensions using x-ray computed tomography. Void growth obtained experimentally was compared with the Rice and Tracey model which predicted well the average void growth. A large scatter in void growth data was explained by differences in grain orienta…
Dislocation interactions at the crack nucleation site were investigated in near-alpha titanium alloy Ti-6242Si subjected to low cycle fatigue. Cyclic plastic strain in the alloy resulted in dislocation pile-ups in the primary alpha grains, nucleated at the boundaries between the primary alpha and the two-phase regions. These two phase regions provided a barrier to slip transfer between primary alpha grains. We suggest that crack nucleation occurred near the basal plane of primary alpha grains by the subsurface double-ended pile-up mechanism first conceived by Tanaka and Mura. Superjogs on the …
The mechanical behaviour of Mg-Al alloys can be largely improved by the formation of an intermetallic Laves phase skeleton, in particular the creep strength. Recent nanomechanical studies revealed plasticity by dislocation glide in the (Mg,Al)$_2$Ca Laves phase, even at room temperature. As strengthening skeleton, this phase remains, however, brittle at low temperature. In this work, we present experimental evidence of slip transfer from the Mg matrix to the (Mg,Al)$_2$Ca skeleton at room temperature and explore associated mechanisms by means of atomistic simulations. We identify two possible …
Ductile fracture has been extensively studied in metals with weak mechanical anisotropy such as copper and aluminum. The fracture of more anisotropic metals, especially those with a hexagonal crystal structure (e.g. titanium), remains far less understood. This paper investigates the ductile fracture process in commercially pure titanium (CP-Ti) with particular emphasis on the influence of grain orientation and local state of strain on void growth. An experimental approach was developed to directly relate the growth of a void in three dimensions to its underlying grain orientation. Grain orient…
We present a mesoscale elastoplastic model of creep in disordered materials which considers temperature-dependent stochastic activation of localized deformation events which are mutually coupled by internal stresses, leading to collective avalanche dynamics. We generalize this stochastic plasticity model by introducing damage in terms of a local strength that decreases, on statistical average, with increasing local plastic strain. As a consequence the model captures failure in terms of strain localization in a catastrophic shear band concomitant with a finite-time singularity of the creep rate…
Spatial and temporal features are studied with respect to their predictive value for failure time prediction in subcritical failure with machine learning (ML). Data are generated from simulations of a novel, brittle random fuse model (RFM), as well as elasto-plastic finite element simulations (FEM) of a stochastic plasticity model with damage, both models considering stochastic thermally activated damage/failure processes in disordered materials. Fuse networks are generated with hierarchical and nonhierarchical architectures. Random forests - a specific ML algorithm - allow us to measure the f…
Dynamic recrystallization (DRX) is often observed in conjunction with adiabatic shear banding (ASB) in polycrystalline materials. The recrystallized nanograins in the shear band have few dislocations compared to the material outside of the shear band. In this paper, we reformulate the recently-developed Langer-Bouchbinder-Lookman (LBL) continuum theory of polycrystalline plasticity and include the creation of grain boundaries. While the shear-banding instability emerges because thermal heating is faster than heat dissipation, recrystallization is interpreted as an entropic effect arising from …
We study the spatial fluctuations of transient creep deformation of materials as a function of time, both by Digital Image Correlation (DIC) measurements of paper samples and by numerical simulations of a crystal plasticity or discrete dislocation dynamics model. This model has a jamming or yielding phase transition, around which power-law or Andrade creep is found. During primary creep, the relative strength of the strain rate fluctuations increases with time in both cases - the spatially averaged creep rate obeys the Andrade law $ε_t \sim t^{-0.7}$, while the time dependence of the spatial f…
Yield stress fluids display complex dynamics, in particular when driven into the transient regime between the solid and the flowing state. Inspired by creep experiments on dense amorphous materials, we implement mesocale elasto-plastic descriptions to analyze such transient dynamics in athermal systems. Both our mean-field and space-dependent approaches consistently reproduce the typical experimental strain rate responses to different applied steps in stress. Moreover, they allow us to understand basic processes involved in the strain rate slowing down (creep) and the strain rate acceleration …
Titanium alloys can suffer from halide-associated stress corrosion cracking at elevated temperatures e.g., in jet engines, where chlorides and Ti-oxide promote the cracking of water vapour in the gas stream, depositing embrittling species at the crack tip. Here we report, using isotopically-labelled experiments, that crack tips in an industrial Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-6Mo alloy are strongly enriched (>5 at.%) in oxygen from the water vapour, far greater than the amounts (0.25 at.%) required to embrittle the material. Surprisingly, relatively little hydrogen (deuterium) is measured, despite careful prep…
Atomistic deformation simulations in the nominally elastic regime are performed for a model binary glass with strain rates as low as $10^{4}$/sec (corresponding to 0.01 shear strain per 1$μ$sec). A robust elasticity is revealed that exhibits only minor elastic softening, despite quite different degrees of structural relaxation occurring over the four orders of magnitude strain rates considered. A closer inspection of the atomic-scale structure indicates the material response is distinctly different for two types of local atomic environments. A system spanning iscosahedrally coordinated substru…
A mesoscale study of a single crystal nickel-base superalloy subjected to an industrially relevant process simulation has revealed the complex interplay between microstructural development and the micromechanical behaviour. As sample gauge volumes were smaller than the length scale of the highly cored structure of the parent material from which they were produced, their subtle composition differences gave rise to differing work hardening rates, influenced by varying secondary dendrite arm spacings, gamma-prime phase solvus temperatures and a topologically inverted gamma/gamma-prime microstruct…
We study the mechanisms of slip transfer at a grain boundary, in titanium, using Differential Aperture X-ray Laue Micro-diffraction (DAXM). This 3D characterization tool enables measurement of the full (9-component) Nye lattice curvature tensor and calculation of the density of geometrically necessary dislocations (GNDs). We observe dislocation pile-ups at a grain boundary, as the neighbor grain prohibits easy passage for dislocation transmission. This incompatibility results in local micro-plasticity within the slipping grain, near to where the slip planes intersect the grain boundary, and we…
Capturing twin nucleation in full-field crystal plasticity is a long-standing problem in materials science. The challenge resides mainly in the biased regional lattice transformation associated with twin formation in defiance of its obedience to a threshold stress law which could be fulfilled in regions where twinning is deferred. Hence, determining a favorable site for nucleation of a twin variant remains a daunting task. We hypothesized that this site-specific nucleation is sensitive to the prior atomic structure of the lattice so twin embryos form in regions where the lattice transformation…
We propose a model to study the plasticity of ice single crystals by numerical simulations. The model includes the long-range character of the interaction among dislocations, as well as the possibility of mutual annihilation of these line defects characterized by its Burgers vector. A multiplication mechanism representing the activation of Frank-Read sources due to dislocation pinning is also introduced in the model. With our approach we are able to probe the dislocation patterns, which result from the dislocation dynamics. Furthermore, our results exhibit features characteristic of driven dyn…
