Vehicle odometry is an essential component of an automated driving system as it computes the vehicle's position and orientation. The odometry module has a higher demand and impact in urban areas where the global navigation satellite system (GNSS) signal is weak and noisy. Traditional visual odometry methods suffer from the diverse illumination status and get disparities during pose estimation, which results in significant errors as the error accumulates. Odometry using light detection and ranging (LiDAR) devices has attracted increasing research interest as LiDAR devices are robust to illumination variations. In this survey, we examine the existing LiDAR odometry methods and summarize the pipeline and delineate the several intermediate steps. Additionally, the existing LiDAR odometry methods are categorized by their correspondence type, and their advantages, disadvantages, and correlations are analyzed across-category and within-category in each step. Finally, we compare the accuracy and the running speed among these methodologies evaluated over the KITTI odometry dataset and outline promising future research directions.

This paper presents a LiDAR odometry estimation framework called Generalized LOAM. Our proposed method is generalized in that it can seamlessly fuse various local geometric shapes around points to improve the position estimation accuracy compared to the conventional LiDAR odometry and mapping (LOAM) method. To utilize continuous geometric features for LiDAR odometry estimation, we incorporate tiny neural networks into a generalized iterative closest point (GICP) algorithm. These neural networks improve the data association metric and the matching cost function using local geometric features. E…

We present a novel tightly-coupled LiDAR-inertial odometry and mapping scheme for both solid-state and mechanical LiDARs. As frontend, a feature-based lightweight LiDAR odometry provides fast motion estimates for adaptive keyframe selection. As backend, a hierarchical keyframe-based sliding window optimization is performed through marginalization for directly fusing IMU and LiDAR measurements. For the Livox Horizon, a newly released solid-state LiDAR, a novel feature extraction method is proposed to handle its irregular scan pattern during preprocessing. In this paper, we present a low-latency odometry system designed for spinning lidars. Many existing lidar odometry methods wait for an entire sweep from the lidar before processing the data. This introduces a large delay between the first laser firing and its pose estimate. To reduce this latency, we treat the spinning lidar as a streaming sensor and process packets as they arrive. This effectively distributes expensive operations across time, resulting in a very fast and lightweight system with much higher throughput and lower latency. Our open-source implementation is available at \url{https…
Scan undistortion is a key module for LiDAR odometry in high dynamic environment with high rotation and translation speed. The existing line of studies mostly focuses on one pass undistortion, which means undistortion for each point is conducted only once in the whole LiDAR-IMU odometry pipeline. In this paper, we propose an optimization based tightly coupled LiDAR-IMU odometry addressing iterated point-level undistortion. By jointly minimizing the cost derived from LiDAR and IMU measurements, our LiDAR-IMU odometry method performs more accurate and robust in high dynamic environment. Besides,…

We propose a framework for tightly-coupled lidar inertial odometry via smoothing and mapping, LIO-SAM, that achieves highly accurate, real-time mobile robot trajectory estimation and map-building. LIO-SAM formulates lidar-inertial odometry atop a factor graph, allowing a multitude of relative and absolute measurements, including loop closures, to be incorporated from different sources as factors into the system. The estimated motion from inertial measurement unit (IMU) pre-integration de-skews point clouds and produces an initial guess for lidar odometry optimization. The obtained lidar odomet…

In the existing methods, LiDAR odometry shows superior performance, but visual odometry is still widely used for its price advantage. Conventionally, the task of visual odometry mainly rely on the input of continuous images. However, it is very complicated for the odometry network to learn the epipolar geometry information provided by the images. In this paper, the concept of pseudo-LiDAR is introduced into the odometry to solve this problem. The pseudo-LiDAR point cloud back-projects the depth map generated by the image into the 3D point cloud, which changes the way of image representation. C…

The key contribution is the optimal (up to linearization errors) multi-modal sensor fusion of detected and tracked sparse edge/surf feature points from LiDAR scans within an efficient MSCKF-bas…

Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) on a moving agent could suffer from motion distortion due to simultaneous rotation of the LiDAR and fast movement of the agent. An accurate piecewise linear de skewing algorithm is proposed to correct the motion distortions for LiDAR inertial odometry (LIO) using high frequency motion information provided by an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU). Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can be adopted to improve the performance of existing LIO algorithms especially in cases of fast movement.

Numerous researchers have conducted studies to achieve fast and robust ground-optimized LiDAR odometry methods for terrestrial mobile platforms. In particular, ground-optimized LiDAR odometry usually employs ground segmentation as a preprocessing method. This is because most of the points in a 3D point cloud captured by a 3D LiDAR sensor on a terrestrial platform are from the ground. However, the effect of the performance of ground segmentation on LiDAR odometry is still not closely examined. In this paper, a robust ground-optimized LiDAR odometry framework is proposed to facilitate the study …

Lidar-Monocular Visual Odometry (LIMO), a odometry estimation algorithm, combines camera and LIght Detection And Ranging sensor (LIDAR) for visual localization by tracking camera features as well as features from LIDAR measurements, and it estimates the motion using Bundle Adjustment based on robust key frames. For rejecting the outliers, LIMO uses semantic labelling and weights of the vegetation landmarks. A drawback of LIMO as well as many other odometry estimation algorithms is that it has many parameters that need to be manually adjusted according to the dynamic changes in the environment …

Satisfactory accuracy can be achieved in scenarios with abundant environmental features using existing LiDAR odometry (LO) algorithms. Unfortunately, the performance of the LiDAR odometry is significantly degraded in urban canyons with numerous dynamic objects and complex environmental structures. Meanwhile, it is still not clear from the existing literature which LO algorithms perform …

Reliable robot pose estimation is a key building block of many robot autonomy pipelines, with LiDAR localization being an active research domain. In this work, a versatile self-supervised LiDAR odometry estimation method is presented, in order to enable the efficient utilization of all available LiDAR data while maintaining real-time performance. The proposed approach selectively applies geometric losses during training, being cognizant of the amount of information that can be extracted from scan points. In addition, no labeled or ground-truth data is required, hence making the presented appro…
LiDAR odometry can achieve accurate vehicle pose estimation for short driving range or in small-scale environments, but for long driving range or in large-scale environments, the accuracy deteriorates as a result of cumulative estimation errors. This drawback necessitates the inclusion of loop closure detection in a SLAM framework to suppress the adverse effects of cumulative errors. To improve the accuracy of pose estimation, we propose a new LiDAR-based SLAM method which uses F-LOAM as LiDAR odometry, Scan Context for loop closure detection, and GTSAM for global optimization. In our approach…
LiDAR odometry and mapping (LOAM) has been playing an important role in autonomous vehicles, due to its ability to simultaneously localize the robot's pose and build high-precision, high-resolution maps of the surrounding environment. This enables autonomous navigation and safe path planning of autonomous vehicles. In this paper, we present a robust, real-time LOAM algorithm for LiDARs with small FoV and irregular samplings. By taking effort on both front-end and back-end, we address several fundamental challenges arising from such LiDARs, and achieve better performance in both precision and e…
LiDAR odometry is one of the essential parts of LiDAR simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM). However, existing LiDAR odometry tends to match a new scan simply iteratively with previous fixed-pose scans, gradually accumulating errors. Furthermore, as an effective joint optimization mechanism, bundle adjustment (BA) cannot be directly introduced into real-time odometry due to the intensive computation of large-scale global landmarks. Therefore, this letter designs a new strategy named a landmark map for bundle adjustment odometry (LMBAO) in LiDAR SLAM to solve these problems. First, BA-ba…

Feature-based global registration methods are not preferred since extracting accurate matching pairs in the nonuniform and sparse LiDAR data remains challenging. In this paper, we present Deep Matching LiDAR Odometry (DMLO), a novel learning-based framework which makes the feature matching method applicable to LiDAR odometry task. Unlike many…
LiDAR odometry plays an important role in self-localization and mapping for autonomous navigation, which is usually treated as a scan registration problem. Although having achieved promising performance on KITTI odometry benchmark, the conventional searching tree-based approach still has the difficulty in dealing with the large scale point cloud efficiently. The recent spherical range image-based method enjoys the merits of fast nearest neighbor search by spherical mapping. However, it is not very effective to deal with the ground points nearly parallel to LiDAR beams. To address these issues,…

We apply the proposed voxel map to an iterated extended Kalman filter and construct a maximum a posteriori probability problem for pose est…
Localization is an essential technique in mobile robotics. In a complex environment, it is necessary to fuse different localization modules to obtain more robust results, in which the error model plays a paramount role. However, exteroceptive sensor-based odometries (ESOs), such as LiDAR/visual odometry, often deliver results with scene-related error, which is difficult to model accurately. To address this problem, this research designs a scene-aware error model for ESO, based on which a multimodal localization fusion framework is developed. In addition, an end-to-end learning method is propos…
