Given a self-similar $K$ set defined from an iterated function system $Γ=(γ_1,\ldots,γ_n)$ and a set of function $H=\{h_i:K\to\mathbb{R}\}_{i=1}^d$ satisfying suitable conditions, we define a generalized gauge action on Kawjiwara-Watatani algebras $\mathcal{O}_Γ$ and their Toeplitz extensions $\mathcal{T}_Γ$. We then characterize the KMS states for this action. For each $β\in(0,\infty)$, there is a Ruelle operator $\mathcal{L}_{H,β}$ and the existence of KMS states at inverse temperature $β$ is related to this operator. The critical inverse temperature $β_c$ is such that $\mathcal{L}_{H,β_c}$ has spectral radius 1. If $β<β_c$, there are no KMS states on $\mathcal{O}_Γ$ and $\mathcal{T}_Γ$; if $β=β_c$, there is a unique KMS state on $\mathcal{O}_Γ$ and $\mathcal{T}_Γ$ which is given by the eigenmeasure of $\mathcal{L}_{H,β_c}$; and if $β>β_c$, including $β=\infty$, the extreme points of the set of KMS states on $\mathcal{T}_Γ$ are parametrized by the elements of $K$ and on $\mathcal{O}_Γ$ by the set of branched points.
In this paper, we study KMS states for the gauge actions on C${}^*$-algebras associated with self-similar sets whose branch points are finite. If the self-similar set does not contain any branch point, the Hutchinson measure gives the unique KMS state. But if the self-similar set dose contain a branch point, there sometimes appear other KMS states which come from branch points. For this purpose we construct explicitly a basis for a Hilbert C${}^*$-module associated with a self-similar set with finite branch condition. Using this we get condition for a Borel probability measure on K to be exten…
KMS weights for generalized gauge actions on graph C*-algebras are studied and a complete description of the structure is obtained for the gauge action when the graph is strongly connected and has at most countably many exits. The structure is surprisingly rich.
We completely classify the KMS states for the gauge action on a $C^*$-algebra associated with a rational function $R$ introduced in our previous work. The gauge action has a phase transition at $β= \log °R$. We can recover the degree of $R$, the number of branched points, the number of exceptional points and the orbits of exceptional points from the structure of the KMS states. We also classify the KMS states for $C^*$-algebras associated with some self-similar sets, including the full tent map and the Sierpinski gasket by a similar method.
Given a zero-one matrix A we consider certain one-parameter groups of automorphisms of the Cuntz-Krieger algebra O_A, generalizing the usual gauge group, and depending on a positive continuous function H defined on the Markov space Σ_A. The main result consists of an application of Ruelle's Perron-Frobenius Theorem to show that these automorphism groups admit a single KMS state.
We study KMS states for gauge actions with potential functions on Cuntz--Krieger algebras whose underlying one-sided topological Markov shifts are continuous orbit equivalent. As a result, we have a certain relationship between topological entropy of continuous orbit equivalent one-sided topological Markov shifts.
Given a positive function on the set of edges of an arbitrary directed graph $E=(E^0,E^1)$, we define a one-parameter group of automorphisms on the C*-algebra of the graph $C^*(E)$, and study the problem of finding KMS states for this action. We prove that there are bijective correspondences between KMS states on $C^*(E)$, a certain class of states on its core, and a certain class of tracial states on $C_0(E^0)$. We also find the ground states for this action and give some examples.
We determine the factor types of the extremal KMS weights for generalized gauge actions on a graph algebra, and the ground states for the restriction of the action to a corner defined from a vertex. The assumptions on the graph and the action varies a bit, but they all cover, at the very least, the case of the gauge action on a strongly connected graph with at most countably many exits. These are the graphs for which all the KMS weights of the gauge action were determined in the first part of this work.
We describe the KMS-states and the ground states for the gauge action on the C*-algebra of the oriented transformation groupoid of a continuous piecewise monotone and exact map of the circle.
For a finite, strongly connected $k$-graph $Λ$, an Huef, Laca, Raeburn and Sims studied the KMS states associated to the preferred dynamics of the $k$-graph $C^*$-algebra $C^*(Λ)$. They found that these KMS states are determined by the periodicity of $Λ$ and a certain Borel probability measure $M$ on the infinite path space $Λ^\infty$ of $Λ$. Here we consider different dynamics on $C^*(Λ)$, which arise from a functor $y: Λ\to \mathbb{R}_+$ and were first proposed by McNamara in his thesis. We show that the KMS states associated to McNamara's dynamics are again parametrized by the periodicity g…
It shown that an a locally injective surjection on a compact metric space admits a canonical locally homeomorphic extension such that the associated C*-algebras are isomorphic. This is then used in a study of the possible inverse temperatures of KMS states for a generalized gauge action.
We calculate the S-invariant of Connes for the von Neumann algebra factors arising from KMS-weights of a generalized gauge action on a simple graph C*-algebra when the associated measure on the infinite path space of the graph is dissipative under the action of the shift.
We describe KMS and ground states arising from a generalized gauge action on ultragraph C*-algebras. We focus on ultragraphs that satisfy Condition~(RFUM), so that we can use the partial crossed product description of ultragraph C*-algebras recently described by the second author and Danilo Royer. In particular, for ultragraphs with no sinks, we generalize a recent result by Toke Carlsen and Nadia Larsen: Given a time evolution on the C*-algebra of an ultragraph, induced by a function on the edge set, we characterize the KMS states in five different ways and ground states in four different way…
For every Hilbert bimodule over a C*-algebra, there are natural gauge actions of the circle on the associated Toeplitz algebra and Cuntz-Pimsner algebra, and hence natural dynamics obtained by lifting these gauge actions to actions of the real line. We study the KMS states of these dynamics for a family of bimodules associated to local homeomorphisms on compact spaces. For inverse temperatures larger than a certain critical value, we find a large simplex of KMS states on the Toeplitz algebra, and we show that all KMS states on the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra have inverse temperature at most this cri…
We determine the factor generated by the GNS-representation defined by a KMS-weight for a generalized gauge action on a simple graph C*-algebra when the corresponding measure on the path space of the graph is conservative for the shift. This is an improvment of Theorem 3.2 in arXives 1412.6762.
This paper presents, by example, an index theory appropriate to algebras without trace. Whilst we work exclusively with the Cuntz algebras the exposition is designed to indicate how to develop a general theory. Our main result is an index theorem (formulated in terms of spectral flow) using a twisted cyclic cocycle where the twisting comes from the modular automorphism group for the canonical gauge action on the Cuntz algebra. We introduce a modified $K_1$-group of the Cuntz algebra so as to pair with this twisted cocycle. As a corollary we obtain a noncommutative geometry interpretation for A…
The paper contains a description of the KMS weights for the one-parameter action on the reduced C*-algebra of a second countable locally compact Hausdorff etale groupoid, arising from a continuous real valued homomorphism satisfying two conditions. The results are subsequently applied to identify the KMS weights for the gauge action on a simple graph algebra. The von Neumann algebra generated by the GNS-representation of an extremal KMS weight is a factor, and tools are developed to determine its type. The paper concludes with three examples to illustrate the results.
We describe the structure of ground states and ceiling states for generalized gauge actions on an UHF algebra. It is shown that both sets are affinely homeomorphic to the state space of a unital AF algebra, and that any pair of unital AF algebras can occur in this way, independently of the field of KMS states. In addtion, we study the KMS-infinity states.
Consider a higher-rank graph of rank k. Both the Cuntz-Krieger algebra and the Toeplitz-Cuntz-Krieger algebra of the graph carry natural gauge actions of the torus T^k, and restricting these gauge actions to one-parameter subgroups of T^k gives dynamical systems involving actions of the real line. We study the KMS states of these dynamical systems. We find that for large inverse temperatures β, the simplex of KMS_βstates on the Toeplitz-Cuntz-Krieger algebra has dimension d one less than the number of vertices in the graph. We also show that there is a preferred dynamics for which there is a c…
We consider a finite directed graph E, and the gauge action on its Toeplitz-Cuntz-Krieger algebra, viewed as an action of R. For inverse temperatures larger than a critical value β_c, we give an explicit construction of all the KMS_β states. If the graph is strongly connected, then there is a unique KMS_{β_c} state, and this state factors through the quotient map onto the C*-algebra C*(E) of the graph. Our approach is direct and relatively elementary.
Given a quasi-lattice ordered group $(G,P)$ and a compactly aligned product system $X$ of essential C$^*$-correspondences over the monoid $P$, we show that there is a bijection between the gauge-invariant KMS$_β$-states on the Nica-Toeplitz algebra $\mathcal{NT}(X)$ of $X$ with respect to a gauge-type dynamics, on one side, and the tracial states on the coefficient algebra $A$ satisfying a system (in general infinite) of inequalities, on the other. This strengthens and generalizes a number of results in the literature in several directions: we do not make any extra assumptions on $P$ and $X$, …
Several authors have recently been studying the equilibrium or KMS states on the Toeplitz algebras of finite higher-rank graphs. For graphs of rank one (that is, for ordinary directed graphs), there is a natural dynamics obtained by lifting the gauge action of the circle to an action of the real line. The algebras of higher-rank graphs carry a gauge action of a higher-dimensional torus, and there are many potential dynamics arising from different embeddings of the real line in the torus. Previous results show that there is nonetheless a "preferred dynamics" for which the system exhibits a part…
We construct KMS-states from $\mathrm{Li}_1$-summable semifinite spectral triples and show that in several important examples the construction coincides with well-known direct constructions of KMS-states for naturally defined flows. Under further summability assumptions the constructed KMS-state can be computed in terms of Dixmier traces. For closed manifolds, we recover the ordinary Lebesgue integral. For Cuntz-Pimsner algebras with their gauge flow, the construction produces KMS-states from traces on the coefficient algebra and recovers the Laca-Neshveyev correspondence. For a discrete group…
We study the KMS states of the C*-algebra of a strongly connected finite k-graph. We find that there is only one 1-parameter subgroup of the gauge action that can admit a KMS state. The extreme KMS states for this preferred dynamics are parameterised by the characters of an abelian group that captures the periodicity in the infinite-path space of the graph. We deduce that there is a unique KMS state if and only if the k-graph C*-algebra is simple, giving a complete answer to a question of Yang. When the k-graph C*-algebra is not simple, our results reveal a phase change of an unexpected nature…
The structure of KMS states of Toeplitz algebras associated to finite graphs equipped with the gauge action is determined by an Huef--Laca--Raeburn--Sims. Their results imply that extremal KMS states of type I correspond to vertices, while extremal KMS states at critical inverse temperatures correspond to minimal strongly connected components. The purpose of this article is to clarify the role of non-minimal components and the relation between vertices and minimal components in the KMS-structure. For each component $C_0$ and each vertex $v \in C_0$, the KMS states at the critical inverse tempe…
To any periodic, unital and full C*-dynamical system (A, α, R) an invertible operator s acting on the Banach space of trace functionals of the fixed point algebra is canonically associated. KMS states correspond to positive eigenvectors of s. A Perron-Frobenius type theorem asserts the existence of KMS states at inverse temperatures equal the logarithms of the inner and outer spectral radii of s (extremal KMS states). Examples arising from subshifts in symbolic dynamics, self-similar sets in fractal geometry and noncommutative metric spaces are discussed. Certain subshifts are naturally associ…
We study relations between $(H,β)$--KMS states on Cuntz--Krieger algebras and the dual of the Perron--Frobenius operator $\mathcal{L}_{-βH}^{*}$. Generalising the well--studied purely hyperbolic situation, we obtain under mild conditions that for an expansive dynamical system there is a one--one correspondence between $(H,β)$--KMS states and eigenmeasures of $\mathcal{L}_{-βH}^{*}$ for the eigenvalue 1. We then consider representations of Cuntz--Krieger algebras which are induced by Markov fibred systems, and show that if the associated incidence matrix is irreducible then these are $\ast$--is…
We consider the dynamics on the C*-algebras of finite graphs obtained by lifting the gauge action to an action of the real line. Enomoto, Fujii and Watatani proved that if the vertex matrix of the graph is irreducible, then the dynamics on the graph algebra admits a single KMS state. We have previously studied the dynamics on the Toeplitz algebra, and explicitly described a finite-dimensional simplex of KMS states for inverse temperatures above a critical value. Here we study the KMS states for graphs with reducible vertex matrix, and for inverse temperatures at and below the critical value. W…
We consider a family of $*$-commuting local homeomorphisms on a compact space, and build a compactly aligned product system of Hilbert bimodules (in the sense of Fowler). This product system has a Nica-Toeplitz algebra and a Cuntz-Pimsner algebra. Both algebras carry a gauge action of a higher-dimensional torus, and there are many possible dynamics obtained by composing with different embeddings of the real line in this torus. We study the KMS states of these dynamics. For large inverse temperatures, we describe the simplex of KMS states on the Nica-Toeplitz algebra. To study KMS states for sm…
We study the equilibrium or KMS states of the Toeplitz C*-algebra of a finite higher-rank graph which is reducible. The Toeplitz algebra carries a gauge action of a higher-dimensional torus, and a dynamics arises by choosing an embedding of the real numbers in the torus. Here we use an embedding which leads to a dynamics which has previously been identified as "preferred", and we scale the dynamics so that 1 is a critical inverse temperature. As with 1-graphs, we study the strongly connected components of the vertices of the graph. The behaviour of the KMS states depends on both the graphical …
The Toeplitz algebra $\mathcal{T}C^{*}(Λ)$ for a finite $k$-graph $Λ$ is equipped with a continuous one-parameter group $α^{r}$ for each $ r\in \mathbb{R}^{k}$, obtained by composing the map $\mathbb{R} \ni t \to (e^{itr_{1}}, \dots , e^{itr_{k}}) \in \mathbb{T}^{k}$ with the gauge action on $\mathcal{T}C^{*}(Λ)$. In this paper we give a complete description of the $β$-KMS states for the $C^{*}$-dynamical system $(\mathcal{T}C^{*}(Λ), α^{r})$ for all finite $k$-graphs $Λ$ and all values of $β\in \mathbb{R}$ and $r\in \mathbb{R}^{k}$.
Given a unital C*-algebra A, an injective endomorphism α:A --> A preserving the unit, and a conditional expectation E from A to the range of αwe consider the crossed-product of A by αrelative to the transfer operator L=α^{-1}E. When E is of index-finite type we show that there exists a conditional expectation G from the crossed-product to A which is unique under certain hypothesis. We define a "gauge action" on the crossed-product algebra in terms of a central positive element h and study its KMS states. The main result is: if h>1 and E(ab)=E(ba) for all a,b in A (e.g. when A is commutative) t…
The relative graph $C^*$-algebras introduced by Muhly and Tomforde are generalizations of both graph algebras and their Toeplitz extensions. For an arbitrary graph $E$ and a subset $R$ of the set of regular vertices of $E$ we show that the relative graph $C^*$-algebra $C^*(E, R)$ is isomorphic to a partial crossed product for an action of the free group generated by the edge set on the relative boundary path space. Given a time evolution on $C^*(E, R)$ induced by a function on the edge set, we characterize the KMS$_β$ states and ground states using an abstract result of Exel and Laca. Guided b…
We study the KMS states and $KMS_{\infty}$ states of generalized gauge actions on the $C^*$-algebra of a pointed Cayley graph. Our results provide information for any finitely generated group, but they are only complete for nilpotent groups.
We consider self-similar actions of groupoids on the path spaces of finite directed graphs, and construct examples of such self-similar actions using a suitable notion of graph automaton. Self-similar groupoid actions have a Cuntz-Pimsner algebra and a Toeplitz algebra, both of which carry natural dynamics lifted from the gauge actions. We study the equilibrium states (the KMS states) on the resulting dynamical systems. Above a critical inverse temperature, the KMS states on the Toeplitz algebra are parametrised by the traces on the full $C^*$-algebra of the groupoid, and we describe a program…
We study the generalised Bunce-Deddens algebras and their Toeplitz extensions constructed by Kribs and Solel from a directed graph and a sequence $ω$ of positive integers. We describe both of these $C^*$-algebras in terms of novel universal properties, and prove uniqueness theorems for them; if $ω$ determines an infinite supernatural number, then no aperiodicity hypothesis is needed in our uniqueness theorem for the generalised Bunce-Deddens algebra. We calculate the KMS states for the gauge action in the Toeplitz algebra when the underlying graph is finite. We deduce that the generalised Bunc…
We describe the flows of weights for von Neumann algebras arising from KMS states for the gauge actions of the Cuntz-Pimsner algebras in terms of Poisson (tail) boundaries.
We consider operator-algebraic dynamical systems given by actions of the real line on unital $C^*$-algebras, and especially the equilibrium states (or KMS states) of such systems. We are particularly interested in systems built from the gauge action on the Toeplitz algebra and graph algebra of a finite directed graph, and we describe a complete classification of the KMS states obtained in joint work with Laca and Sims. We then discuss applications of these results to Cuntz-Pimsner algebras associated to local homeomorphisms, obtained in collaboration with Afsar. Thomsen has given bounds on the…
We extend the theory of the chemical potential associated to a compact separable gauge group to the case of disordered quantum systems. This is done in the natural framework of operator algebras. Among the other results, we show that the chemical potential does not depend on the disorder. The situation of the $n$--torus is treated in some detail. Indeed, provided that the zero--point is fixed independently on the disorder, the chemical potential is intrinsically defined in terms of the direct integral decomposition of the Connes--Radon--Nikodym cocycle associated to the KMS state $ω$ and its t…
We present a class of subshifts $Z_N, N = 1,2,...$ whose associated $C^*$-algebras ${\cal O}_{Z_N}$ are simple, purely infinite and not stably isomorphic to any Cuntz-Krieger algebra nor to Cuntz algebra. The class of the subshifts is the first examples whose associated $C^*$-algebras are not stably isomorphic to any Cuntz-Krieger algebra nor to Cuntz algebra. The subshifts $Z_N$ are coded systems whose languages are context free. We compute the topological entropy for the subshifts and show that KMS-state for gauge action on the associated $C^*$-algebra ${\cal O}_{Z_N}$ exists if and only if …
We analyse certain Haar systems associated to groupoids obtained by certain natural equivalence relations of dynamical nature on sets like $\{1,2,...,d\}^\mathbb{Z}$, $\{1,2,...,d\}^\mathbb{N}$, $S^1\times S^1$, or $(S^1)^\mathbb{N}$, where $S^1$ is the unitary circle. We also describe properties of transverse functions, quasi-invariant probabilities and KMS states for some examples of von Neumann algebras (and also $C^*$-Algebras) associated to these groupoids. We relate some of these KMS states with Gibbs states of Thermodynamic Formalism. While presenting new results, we will also describe …
The fundamental group of a hyperbolic manifold acts on the limit set, giving rise to a cross-product C^* algebra. We construct nontrivial K-cycles for the cross-product algebra, thereby extending some results of Connes and Sullivan to higher dimensions. We also show how the Patterson-Sullivan measure on the limit set can be interpreted as a center-valued KMS state.
Let $R$ be a rational function. The iterations $(R^n)_n$ of $R$ gives a complex dynamical system on the Riemann sphere. We associate a $C^*$-algebra and study a relation between the $C^*$-algebra and the original complex dynamical system. In this short note, we recover the number of $n$-th backward orbits counted without multiplicity starting at branched points in terms of associated $C^*$-algebras with gauge actions. In particular, we can partially imagine how a branched point is moved to another branched point under the iteration of $R$. We use KMS states and a Perron-Frobenius type operator…
Iteration of a rational function $R$ gives a complex dynamical system on the Riemann sphere. We introduce a $C^*$-algebra ${\mathcal O}_R$ associated with $R$ as a Cuntz-Pimsner algebra of a Hilbert bimodule over the algebra $A = C(J_R)$ of continuous functions on the Julia set $J_R$ of $R$. The algebra ${\mathcal O}_R$ is a certain analog of the crossed product by a boundary action. We show that if the degree of $R$ is at least two, then $C^*$-algebra ${\mathcal O}_R$ is simple and purely infinite. For example if $R(z) = z^2 - 2$, then the Julia set $J_R = [-2,2]$ and the restriction $R : J_R…
We give a construction of a nuclear $C^\ast$-algebra associated with an amalgamated free product of groups, generalizing Spielberg's construction of a certain Cuntz-Krieger algebra associated with a finitely generated free product of cyclic groups. Our nuclear $C^\ast$-algebras can be identified with certain Cuntz-Krieger-Pimsner algebras. We will also show that our algebras can be obtained by the crossed product construction of the canonical actions on the hyperbolic boundaries, which proves a special case of Adams' result about amenability of the boundary action for hyperbolic groups. We wil…
Using ideas from Jones, lattice gauge theory and loop quantum gravity, we construct 1+1-dimensional gauge theories on a spacetime cylinder. Given a separable compact group $G$, we construct localized time-zero fields on the spatial torus as a net of C*-algebras together with an action of the gauge group that is an infinite product of $G$ over the dyadic rationals and, using a recent machinery of Jones, an action of Thompson's group $T$ as a replacement of the spatial diffeomorphism group. Adding a family of probability measures on the unitary dual of $G$ we construct a state and obtain a net o…
