Using the Wherl entropy, we study the delocalization in phase-space of energy eigenstates in the vicinity of avoided crossing in the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model. These avoided crossing, appearing at intermediate energies in a certain parameter region of the model, originate classically from pairs of trajectories lying in different phase space regions, which contrary to the low energy regime, are not connected by the discrete parity symmetry of the model. As coupling parameters are varied, a sudden increase of the Wherl entropy is observed for eigenstates close to the critical energy of the excited-state quantum phase transition (ESQPT). This allows to detect when an avoided crossing is accompanied by a superposition of the pair of classical trajectories in the Husimi functions of eigenstates. This superposition yields an enhancement of dynamical tunneling, which is observed by considering initial Bloch states that evolve partially into the partner region of the paired classical trajectories, thus breaking the quantum-classical correspondence in the evolution of observables.
We study the relation between wavefunction (de)localization and the avoided crossing in a quadrupole billiard. We employ the inverse participation ratio, the Renyi entropy and the root-mean-square (rms) image contrast as the three types of measures for wavefunction (de)localization. It is found that all these measures behave similarly, exhibiting a minimum at the center of avoided crossing, where wavefunction is maximally delocalized. Our results show that these quantities can be good indicators for wavefunction (de)localization although the rms contrast yields the most sensitive measure among…
We present a new paradigm in the field of cavity QED by bringing out remarkable features associated with the avoided crossing of the dressed state levels of the Jaynes Cummings model. We demonstrate how the parametric couplings, realized by a second order nonlinearity in the cavity, can turn the crossing of dressed states into avoided crossings. We show how one can generate coherence between the avoided crossing of dressed states. Such coherences result, for example, in quantum beats in the excitation probability of the qubit. The quality of quantum beats can be considerably improved by adiaba…
Due to the absence of degeneracy in one dimension, when a parameter, $λ$, of a potential is varied slowly the discrete energy eigenvalue curves, $E_n(λ)$, cannot cross but they are allowed to come quite close and diverge from each other. This phenomena is called avoided crossing of energy levels. The parametric evolution of eigenvalues of the generally known one dimensional potentials do not display avoided crossings and on the other hand some complicated and analytically unsolvable models do exhibit this. Here, we show that this interesting spectral property can be found in simple one-dimensi…
The non-crossing rule for the energy levels of a parameter-dependent Hamiltonian is revisited and a flaw in a commonly accepted proof is revealed. Some aspects of avoided crossings are illustrated by means of simple models. One of them shows the close relationship between avoided crossings and exceptional points.
Extensive theoretical and experimental investigations on multipartite systems close to an avoided energy-level crossing reveal interesting features such as the extremisation of entanglement. Conventionally, the estimation of entanglement directly from experimental observation involves either one of two approaches: Uncertainty-relation-based estimation that captures the linear correlation between relevant observables, or rigorous but error-prone quantum state reconstruction on tomograms obtained from homodyne measurements. We investigate the behaviour, close to avoided crossings, of entanglemen…
We study time-optimal protocols for controlling quantum systems which show several avoided level crossings in their energy spectrum. The structure of the spectrum allows us to generate a robust guess which is time-optimal at each crossing. We correct the field applying optimal control techniques in order to find the minimal evolution or quantum speed limit (QSL) time. We investigate its dependence as a function of the system parameters and show that it gets proportionally smaller to the well-known two-level case as the dimension of the system increases. Working at the QSL, we study the control…
Do experiments based on superconducting loops segmented with Josephson junctions (e.g., flux qubits) show macroscopic quantum behavior in the sense of Schrödinger's cat example? Various arguments based on microscopic and phenomenological models were recently adduced in this debate. We approach this problem by adapting (to flux qubits) the framework of large-scale quantum coherence, which was already successfully applied to spin ensembles and photonic systems. We show that contemporary experiments might show quantum coherence more than 100 times larger than experiments in the classical regime. …
This study concerns finite basis set $\{χ_k\}$ calculations of resonances based on real scaling, $χ_k(x)\to χ_k(xe^{-η})$. I demonstrate that resonance width is generally influenced by several neighboring quasi-discrete continuum states. Based on this finding I propose a new method to calculate the complex resonance energy together with several states of complex rotated continuum. The theory is introduced for a one-dimensional model, then it is applied for helium doubly excited resonance $2s^2$. The new method requires the real spectrum ("stabilization graph") for a sufficiently large interval…
We investigate ways to optimize adiabaticity and diabaticity in the Landau-Zener model with non-uniform sweeps. We show how diabaticity can be engineered with a pulse consisting of a linear sweep augmented by an oscillating term. We show that the oscillation leads to jumps in populations whose value can be accurately modeled using a model of multiple, photon-assisted Landau-Zener transitions, which generalizes work by Wubs et al. [New J. Phys. 7, 218 (2005)]. We extend the study on diabaticity using methods derived from optimal control. We also show how to preserve adiabaticity with optimal pu…
The relation between the Shannon entropy and avoided crossings is investigated in dielectric microcavities. The Shannon entropy of probability density for eigenfunctions in an open elliptic billiard as well as a closed quadrupole billiard increases as the center of avoided crossing is approached. These results are opposite to those of atomic physics for electrons. It is found that the collective Lamb shift of the open quantum system and the symmetry breaking in the closed chaotic quantum system give equivalent effects to the Shannon entropy.
Cavity optomechanics offers powerful methods for controlling optical fields and mechanical motion. A number of proposals have predicted that this control can be extended considerably in devices where multiple cavity modes couple to each other via the motion of a single mechanical oscillator. Here we study the dynamical properties of such a multimode optomechanical device, in which the coupling between cavity modes results from mechanically-induced avoided crossings in the cavity's spectrum. Near the avoided crossings we find that the optical spring shows distinct features that arise from the i…
Optically addressable paramagnetic defects in wide-band-gap semiconductors are promising platforms for quantum communications and sensing. The presence of avoided crossings between the electronic levels of these defects can substantially alter their quantum dynamics and be both detrimental and beneficial for quantum information applications. Avoided crossings give rise to clock transitions, which can significantly improve protection from magnetic noise and favorably increase coherence time. However, the reduced coupling between electronic and nuclear spins at an avoided crossing may be detrime…
Landau-Zener physics is often exploited to generate quantum logic gates and to perform state initialization and readout. The quality of these operations can be degraded by noise fluctuations in the energy gap at the avoided crossing. We leverage a recently discovered correspondence between qubit evolution and space curves in three dimensions to design noise-robust Landau-Zener sweeps through an avoided crossing. In the case where the avoided crossing is purely noise-induced, we prove that operations based on monotonic sweeps cannot be robust to noise. Hence, we design families of phase gates b…

By driving a 3D transmon with microwave fields, we generate an effective avoided energy-level crossing. Then we chirp microwave frequency, which is equivalent to driving the system through the avoided energy-level crossing by sweeping the avoided crossing. A double-passage chirp produces Landau-Zener-Stückelberg-Majorana interference that agree well with the numerical results. Our method is fully applicable to other quantum systems that contain no intrinsic avoided level crossing, providing an alternative approach for quantum control and quantum simulation.
We explain the concept of superadiabatic approximations and show how in the context of the Born- Oppenheimer approximation they lead to an explicit formula that can be used to predict transitions at avoided crossings. Based on this formula, we present a simple method for computing wave packet dynamics across avoided crossings. Only knowledge of the adiabatic electronic energy levels near the avoided crossing is required for the computation. In particular, this means that no diabatization procedure is necessary, the adiabatic energy levels can be computed on the fly, and they only need to be co…
We derive the structure of the Landau-Zener-Stückelberg-Majorana (LZSM) interference pattern for a qubit that experiences quantum dissipation and is additionally subjected to time-periodic but otherwise general driving. A spin-boson Hamiltonian serves as model which we treat with a Bloch-Redfield master equation in Floquet basis. It predicts a peak structure that depends sensitively on the operator through which the qubit couples to the bath. The Fourier transforms of the LZSM patterns exhibit arc structures which reflect the shape of the driving. These features are captured by an effective ti…
The existence of quantum tunneling opens the possibility of a sudden spatial relocalization of a system after a minor modification of its parameters. Such a quantum analogue of the Thom's classical catastrophe would manifest itself, experimentally, via a reordering of the maxima of the probability density paralleled by avoided crossings of the energy levels. Any model (described, say, by an analytic potential with several pronounced minima) is difficult to describe near such an instability because the phenomenon is oversensitive to perturbations. A systematic exact (or, better, quasi-exact) co…
On the relevance of avoided crossings away from quantum critical point to the complexity of quantum adiabatic algorithm
两个最近的预印本[B。阿尔茨赫姆湾Krovi和J. Roland,“Quantum adiabatic optimization fails for random instances of NP-complete problems”,arXiv:0908.2782和“安德森局域化casts clouds over adiabatic quantum optimization”,arXiv:0912.0746]认为,对于作为实例大小N的逆幂缩放的非常小的横向场,对NP-complete问题的随机实例的局部最小值的能量的随机4阶微扰校正导致避免的交叉,所述交叉导致接近末端的量子绝热算法的失败(由于指数小间隙)。
In quantum mechanics, collisions between two particles are captured by a scattering matrix which describes the transfer from an initial entrance state to an outgoing final state. Analyticity of the elements of this $S$-matrix enables their continuation onto the complex energy plane and opens up a powerful and widely used framework in scattering theory, where bound states and scattering resonances for a physical system are ascribed to $S$-matrix poles. In the Gedankenexperiment of gradually changing the potential parameters of the system, the complex energy poles will begin to move, and in thei…
The rotational and fine structure of open-shell molecules in a $Σ$ electronic state gives rise to crossings between Zeeman states of different parity. These crossings become avoided in the presence of an electric field. We propose an algorithm that encodes Ising models into qubits defined by pairs of $^2Σ$ molecules sharing an excitation near these avoided crossings. This can be used to realize a transverse field Ising model tunable by an external electric or magnetic field, suitable for quantum annealing applications. We perform dynamical calculations for several examples with one- and two-di…
An asymptotic approach for a Schroedinger type equation with a non selfadjoint slowly varying Hamiltonian of a special type is developed. The Hamiltonian is assumed to be the result of a small perturbation of an operator with a twofold degeneracy (turning) point, which can be diagonalized at this point. The non-adiabatic transformation of modes is studied in the case where two small parameters are dependent: the parameter characterizing an order of the perturbation is a square root of the adiabatic parameter. The perturbation of the Hamiltonian produces a close pair of simple degeneracy points…
Periodic driving of a quantum (or classical) many-body system can alter the systems properties significantly and therefore has emerged as a promising way to engineer exotic quantum phases, such as topological insulators and discrete time crystals. A major limitation in such setups, is that generally interacting, driven systems will heat up over time and lose the desired properties. Understanding the relevant time scales is thus an important topic in the field and so far, there have only been few approaches to determine heating times for a concrete system quantitatively, and in a computationall…
We study the dynamics of a quantum two state system driven through an avoided crossing under the influence of a super Ohmic environment, i.e. a longitudinal as well as a transversal one. The crossing time window, in which relaxation influences the dynamics, is centered around the avoided crossing. We determine the dynamics and the Landau-Zener probability employing the numerical exact quasi-adiabatic path integral. At weak coupling we show that the numerically less demanding nonequilibrium Bloch equations provide an accurate description. The crossing time depends strongly not only on the syste…
We propose a controllable qubit in a graphene nanobubble with emergent two-level systems induced by pseudo-magnetic fields. We found that double quantum dots can be created by the strain-induced pseudo-magnetic fields of a nanobubble, and that their quantum states can be manipulated by either local gate potentials or the pseudo-magnetic fields. Graphene qubits clearly exhibit an avoided crossing behavior via electrical detuning, with energy splittings of about a few meV. We also show a remarkable tunability of our device design that allows for the fine control of the Landau--Zener transition p…
We consider nonadiabatic systems in which the classical Born-Oppenheimer approximation breaks down. We present a general theory that accurately captures the full transmitted wavepacket after multiple transitions through either a single or distinct avoided crossings, including phase information and associated interference effects. Under suitable approximations, we recover both the celebrated Landau-Zener formula and standard surface-hopping algorithms. Our algorithm shows excellent agreement with the full quantum dynamics for a range of avoided crossing systems, and can also be applied to singl…
The non-equilibrium dynamics of small boson ensembles in a one-dimensional optical lattice is explored upon a sudden quench of an additional harmonic trap from strong to weak confinement. We find that the competition between the initial localization and the repulsive interaction leads to a resonant response of the system for intermediate quench amplitudes, corresponding to avoided crossings in the many-body eigenspectrum with varying final trap frequency. In particular, we show that these avoided crossings can be utilized to prepare the system in a desired state. The dynamical response is show…
Ultracold spinor atoms in the weak and strong interaction regime have received extensive investigations, while the behavior in the intermediate regime is less understood. We numerically investigate ultracold spinor atomic ensembles of finite size in the intermediate interaction regime, and reveal the evolution of the eigenstates from the strong to the intermediate regime. In the strong interaction regime, it has been well known that the low-lying eigenenergy spectrum presents the well-gaped multi-manifold structure, and the energy gaps protect the categorization of the eigenstates. In the inte…
We explore the interplay between tunneling and interatomic interactions in the dynamics of a bosonic Josephson junction. We tune the scattering length of an atomic $^{39}$K Bose-Einstein condensate confined in a double-well trap to investigate regimes inaccessible to other superconducting or superfluid systems. In the limit of small-amplitude oscillations, we study the transition from Rabi to plasma oscillations by crossing over from attractive to repulsive interatomic interactions. We observe a critical slowing down in the oscillation frequency by increasing the strength of an attractive inte…
