Periodic driving of a quantum (or classical) many-body system can alter the systems properties significantly and therefore has emerged as a promising way to engineer exotic quantum phases, such as topological insulators and discrete time crystals. A major limitation in such setups, is that generally interacting, driven systems will heat up over time and lose the desired properties. Understanding the relevant time scales is thus an important topic in the field and so far, there have only been few approaches to determine heating times for a concrete system quantitatively, and in a computationally efficient way. In this article we propose a new approach, based on building the heating rate from microscopic processes, encoded in avoided level crossings of the Floquet propagator. We develop a method able to resolve individual crossings and show how to construct the heating rate based on these. The method is closely related to the Fermi Golden Rule approach for weak drives, but can go beyond it, since it captures non-perturbative effects by construction. This enables our method to be applicable in scenarios such as the heating time of discrete time crystals or frequency dependent couplings, which are very relevant for Floquet engineering, where previously no efficient methods for estimating heating times were available.
We study heating rates in strongly interacting quantum lattice systems in the thermodynamic limit. Using a numerical linked cluster expansion, we calculate the energy as a function of the driving time and find a robust exponential regime. The heating rates are shown to be in excellent agreement with Fermi's golden rule. We discuss the relationship between heating rates and, within the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis, the smooth function that characterizes the off-diagonal matrix elements of the drive operator in the eigenbasis of the static Hamiltonian. We show that such a function, in no…
We derive general bounds on the linear response energy absorption rates of periodically driven many-body systems of spins or fermions on a lattice. We show that for systems with local interactions, energy absorption rate decays exponentially as a function of driving frequency in any number of spatial dimensions. These results imply that topological many-body states in periodically driven systems, although generally metastable, can have very long lifetimes. We discuss applications to other problems, including decay of highly energetic excitations in cold atomic and solid-state systems.
We discuss the effect of dissipation on heating which occurs in periodically driven quantum many body systems. We especially focus on a periodically driven Bose-Hubbard model coupled to an energy and particle reservoir. Without dissipation, this model is known to undergo parametric instabilities which can be considered as an initial stage of heating. By taking the weak on-site interaction limit as well as the weak system-reservoir coupling limit, we find that parametric instabilities are suppressed if the dissipation is stronger than the on-site interaction strength and stable steady states ap…
Periodically driven quantum matter can realize exotic dynamical phases. In order to understand how ubiquitous and robust these phases are, it is pertinent to investigate the heating dynamics of generic interacting quantum systems. Here we study the thermalization in a periodically-driven generalized Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK)-model, which realizes a crossover from a heavy Fermi liquid (FL) to a non-Fermi liquid (NFL) at a tunable energy scale. Developing an exact field theoretic approach, we determine two distinct regimes in the heating dynamics. While the NFL heats exponentially and thermalizes …
Having established the fact that interacting classical kicked rotor systems exhibit long-lived prethermal phase with quasi-conserved average Hamiltonian before entering into chaotic heating regime, we use spatio-temporal fluctuation correlation of kinetic energy to probe the above dynamic phases. We remarkably find the diffusive transport of fluctuation in the prethermal regime reminding us the underlying hydrodynamic picture in a generalized Gibbs ensemble with a definite temperature that depends on the driving parameter and initial conditions. On the other hand, the heating regime, character…
We study the dynamics and stability in a strongly interacting resonantly driven two-band model. Using exact numerical simulations, we find a stable regime at large driving frequencies where the time evolution is governed by a local Floquet Hamiltonian that is approximately conserved out to very long times. For slow driving, on the other hand, the system becomes unstable and heats up to infinite temperature. While thermalization is relatively fast in these two regimes (but to different "temperatures"), in the crossover between them we find slow nonthermalizing time evolution: temporal fluctuati…
In this paper and its sequel, we study non-equilibrium dynamics in driven 1+1D conformal field theories (CFTs) with periodic, quasi-periodic, and random driving. We study a soluble family of drives in which the Hamiltonian only involves the energy-momentum density spatially modulated at a single wavelength. The resulting time evolution is then captured by a Möbius coordinate transformation. In this Part I, we establish the general framework and focus on the first two classes. In periodically driven CFTs, we generalize earlier work and study the generic features of entanglement/energy evolution…
Periodically driven systems are a common topic in modern physics. In optical lattices specifically, driving is at the origin of many interesting phenomena. However, energy is not conserved in driven systems, and under periodic driving, heating of a system is a real concern. In an effort to better understand this phenomenon, the heating of single-band systems has been studied, with a focus on disorder- and interaction-induced effects, such as many-body localisation. Nevertheless, driven systems occur in a much wider context than this, leaving room for further research. Here, we fill this gap by…
In this sequel (to [Phys. Rev. Res. 3, 023044(2021)], arXiv:2006.10072), we study randomly driven $(1+1)$ dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs), a family of quantum many-body systems with soluble non-equilibrium quantum dynamics. The sequence of driving Hamiltonians is drawn from an independent and identically distributed random ensemble. At each driving step, the deformed Hamiltonian only involves the energy-momentum density spatially modulated at a single wavelength and therefore induces a Möbius transformation on the complex coordinates. The non-equilibrium dynamics is then determined…
According to the second law of thermodynamics the total entropy of a system is increased during almost any dynamical process. The positivity of the specific heat implies that the entropy increase is associated with heating. This is generally true both at the single particle level, like in the Fermi acceleration mechanism of charged particles reflected by magnetic mirrors, and for complex systems in everyday devices. Notable exceptions are known in noninteracting systems of particles moving in periodic potentials. Here the phenomenon of dynamical localization can prevent heating beyond certain …
The Hamiltonian of an evolving Universe is shown to be formally equivalent to that of a driven quantum system, whose driving follows from the temporal dependence of the spacetime metric. This analogy allows insights from the field of driven quantum systems to be applied to cosmological settings. In particular, it is shown that periodic cyclic cosmologies are generically prohibited (except under certain limiting constraints) due to their correspondence with periodically-driven quantum systems (which are typically expected to experience unbounded heating in the infinite future). This result high…
Periodically driven (Floquet) systems are said to prethermalize when their energy absorption is very slow for long time. This effect was first discovered in quantum spin models, where the heating rate is exponentially small in the ratio between the driving frequency and the spin bandwidth. Recently, it was shown that prethermalization occurs also in classical systems with an infinite bandwidth. Here, we address the open question of which small parameter controls the lifetime of the prethermal state in these systems. We, first, numerically study the dependence of the lifetime on the initial con…
We study the quantum version of a tilting and flashing Hamiltonian ratchets, consisting of a periodic potential and a time-periodic driving field. The system dynamics is governed by a Floquet evolution matrix bearing the symmetry of the corresponding Hamiltonian. The dc-current appears due to the desymmetrization of Floquet eigenstates, which become transporting when all the relevant symmetries are violated. Those eigenstates which mostly contribute to a directed transport reside in phase space regions corresponding to classical resonances. Quantum dynamics leads to the dependence of the avera…
We introduce a switching mechanism in the asymptotic occupations of quantum states induced by the combined effects of a periodic driving and a weak coupling to a heat bath. It exploits one of the ubiquitous avoided crossings in driven systems and works even if both involved Floquet states have small occupations. It is independent of the initial state and the duration of the driving. As a specific example of this general switching mechanism we show how an asymmetric double well potential can be switched between the lower and the upper well by a periodic driving that is much weaker than the asym…
We study heating dynamics in isolated quantum many-body systems driven periodically at high frequency and large amplitude. Combining the high-frequency expansion for the Floquet Hamiltonian with Fermi's golden rule (FGR), we develop a master equation termed the Floquet FGR. Unlike the conventional one, the Floquet FGR correctly describes heating dynamics, including the prethermalization regime, even for strong drives, under which the Floquet Hamiltonian is significantly dressed, and nontrivial Floquet engineering is present. The Floquet FGR depends on system size only weakly, enabling us to an…
We establish some general dynamical properties of lattice many-body systems that are subject to a high-frequency periodic driving. We prove that such systems have a quasi-conserved extensive quantity $H_*$, which plays the role of an effective static Hamiltonian. The dynamics of the system (e.g., evolution of any local observable) is well-approximated by the evolution with the Hamiltonian $H_*$ up to time $τ_*$, which is exponentially long in the driving frequency. We further show that the energy absorption rate is exponentially small in the driving frequency. In cases where $H_*$ is ergodic, …
We analyze the dynamics of periodically-driven (Floquet) Hamiltonians with short- and long-range interactions, finding clear evidence for a thermalization time, $τ^*$, that increases exponentially with the drive frequency. We observe this behavior, both in systems with short-ranged interactions, where our results are consistent with rigorous bounds, and in systems with long-range interactions, where such bounds do not exist at present. Using a combination of heating and entanglement dynamics, we explicitly extract the effective energy scale controlling the rate of thermalization. Finally, we d…
We consider the dynamics of an XY spin chain subjected to an external transverse field which is periodically quenched between two values. By deriving an exact expression of the Floquet Hamiltonian for this out-of-equilibrium protocol with arbitrary driving frequencies, we show how, after an unfolding of the Floquet spectrum, the parameter space of the system is characterized by alternations between local and non-local regions, corresponding respectively to the absence and presence of Floquet resonances. The boundary lines between regions are obtained analytically from avoided crossings in the …
We develop a flow renormalization approach for periodically-driven quantum systems, which reveals prethermal dynamical regimes and associated timescales via direct correspondence between real time and flow time behavior. In this formalism, the dynamical problem is recast in terms of coupling constants of the theory flowing towards an attractive fixed point that represents the thermal Floquet Hamiltonian at long times, while narrowly avoiding a series of unstable fixed points which determine distinct prethermal regimes at intermediate times. We study a class of relevant perturbations that trigg…
We reveal a continuous dynamical heating transition between a prethermal and an infinite-temperature stage in a clean, chaotic periodically driven classical spin chain. The transition time is a steep exponential function of the drive frequency, showing that the exponentially long-lived prethermal plateau, originally observed in quantum Floquet systems, survives the classical limit. Even though there is no straightforward generalization of Floquet's theorem to nonlinear systems, we present strong evidence that the prethermal physics is well described by the inverse-frequency expansion. We relat…
We study the dynamics of periodically-kicked many-body systems away from the high-frequency regime, and discuss a family of Floquet systems where the notion of prethermalization can be naturally extended to intermediate and low driving frequencies. We investigate numerically the dynamics of both integrable and nonintegrable systems, and report on the formation of a long-lived prethermal plateau, akin to the high-frequency limit, where the system thermalizes with respect to an effective Hamiltonian captured by the inverse-frequency expansion (IFE). Unlike the high-frequency regime, we find that…
We investigate a heating phenomenon in periodically driven integrable systems that can be mapped to free-fermion models. We find that heating to the high-temperature state, which is a typical scenario in non-integrable systems, can also appear in integrable time-periodic systems; the amount of energy absorption rises drastically near a frequency threshold where the Floquet-Magnus expansion diverges. As the driving period increases, we also observe that the effective temperatures of the generalized Gibbs ensemble for conserved quantities go to infinity. By the use of the scaling analysis, we re…
The nonequilibrium quantum dynamics of closed many-body systems is a rich yet challenging field. While recent progress for periodically driven (Floquet) systems has yielded a number of rigorous results, our understanding on quantum many-body systems driven by rapidly varying but a- and quasi-periodic driving is still limited. Here, we derive rigorous, non-perturbative, bounds on the heating rate in quantum many-body systems under Thue-Morse quasi-periodic driving and under random multipolar driving, the latter being a tunably randomized variant of the former. In the process, we derive a static…
This book chapter describes the dynamics of a modulated oscillator for resonant and nonresonant modulation. Two types of resonant modulation are considered: additive, with frequency close to the oscillator eigenfrequency, and parametric, with frequency close to twice the eigenfrequency. It is shown that relaxation of the oscillator is accompanied by quantum noise, which leads to a finite-width distribution over quantum states even for T=0. The quantum noise also leads to switching between coexisting vibrational states via transitions over the barrier in phase space. The switching mechanism, qu…
Exploiting the rich phenomenology of periodically-driven many-body systems is notoriously hindered by persistent heating in both the classical and quantum realm. Here, we investigate to what extent coupling to a large thermal reservoir makes stabilisation of a non-trivial steady state possible. To this end, we model both the system and the reservoir as classical spin chains where driving is applied through a rotating magnetic field, and simulate the Hamiltonian dynamics of this setup. We find that the intuitive limits of infinite and vanishing frequency, where the system dynamics is governed b…
We study the dissipative dynamics of a periodically driven inhomogeneous critical lattice model in one dimension. The closed system dynamics starting from pure initial states is well-described by a driven Conformal Field Theory (CFT), which predicts the existence of both heating and non-heating phases in such systems. Heating is inhomogeneous and is manifested via the emergence of black-hole like horizons in the system. The robustness of this CFT phenomenology when considering thermal initial states and open systems remains elusive. First, we present analytical results for the Floquet CFT time…
We investigate a class of periodically driven many-body systems that allows us to extend the phenomenon of prethermalization to the vicinity of isolated intermediate-to-low drive frequencies away from the high-frequency limit. We provide numerical evidence for the formation of a parametrically long-lived prethermal plateau, captured by an effective Floquet Hamiltonian computed using the replica inverse-frequency expansion, and demonstrate its stability w.r.t.~random perturbations in the drive period. Considering exclusively nonintegrable Floquet Hamiltonians, we find that heating rates are non…
It is well understood that many-body systems driven at high frequency heat up only exponentially slowly and exhibit a long prethermalization regime. We prove rigorously that a certain relevant class of systems heat very slowly under weak periodic driving at intermediate frequency as well. This class of systems are those whose time-dependent, possibly translation-invariant, Hamiltonian is a weak perturbation of a sum of mutually commuting terms. This condition covers several periodically kicked systems that have been considered in the literature recently, in particular kicked Ising models. In c…
Classification of the non-equilibrium quantum many-body dynamics is a challenging problem in condensed matter physics and statistical mechanics. In this work, we study the basic question that whether a (1+1) dimensional conformal field theory (CFT) is stable or not under a periodic driving with $N$ non-commuting Hamiltonians. Previous works showed that a Floquet (or periodically driven) CFT driven by certain $SL_2$ deformed Hamiltonians exhibit both non-heating (stable) and heating (unstable) phases. In this work, we show that the phase diagram depends on the types of driving Hamiltonians. In …
Given a $generic$ two-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT), we propose an analytically solvable setup to study the Floquet dynamics of the CFT, i.e., the dynamics of a CFT subject to a periodic driving. A complete phase diagram in the parameter space can be analytically obtained within our setup. We find two phases: the heating phase and the non-heating phase. In the heating phase, the entanglement entropy keeps growing linearly in time, indicating that the system keeps absorbing energy; in the non-heating phase, the entanglement entropy oscillates periodically in time, i.e., the system is…
We propose the implementation of a quantum heat pump with ultracold atoms. It is based on two periodically driven coherently coupled quantum dots using ultracold atoms. Each dot possesses two relevant quantum states and is coupled to a fermionic reservoir. The working principle is based on energy-selective driving-induced resonant tunneling processes, where a particle that tunnels from one dot to the other either absorbs or emits the energy quantum $\hbarω$ associated with the driving frequency, depending on its energy. We characterize the device using Floquet theory and compare simple analyti…
The conventional framework for defining and understanding phases of matter requires thermodynamic equilibrium. Extensions to non-equilibrium systems have led to surprising insights into the nature of many-body thermalization and the discovery of novel phases of matter, often catalyzed by driving the system periodically. The inherent heating from such Floquet drives can be tempered by including strong disorder in the system, but this can also mask the generality of non-equilibrium phases. In this work, we utilize a trapped-ion quantum simulator to observe signatures of a non-equilibrium driven …
Following the recent realisation that periodically driven quantum matter can support new types of spatiotemporal order, now known as discrete time crystals (DTCs), we consider the stability of this phenomenon. Motivated by its conceptual importance as well as its experimental relevance we consider the effect of coupling to an external environment. We use this to argue, both analytically and numerically, that the DTC in disordered one-dimensional systems is destroyed at long times by any such natural coupling. This holds true even in the case where the coupling is such that the system is preven…
A tremendous amount of recent attention has focused on characterizing the dynamical properties of periodically driven many-body systems. Here, we use a novel numerical tool termed `density matrix truncation' (DMT) to investigate the late-time dynamics of large-scale Floquet systems. We find that DMT accurately captures two essential pieces of Floquet physics, namely, prethermalization and late-time heating to infinite temperature. Moreover, by implementing a spatially inhomogeneous drive, we demonstrate that an interplay between Floquet heating and diffusive transport is crucial to understandi…
We show how second-order Floquet engineering can be employed to realize systems in which many-body localization coexists with topological properties in a driven system. This allows one to implement and dynamically control a topologically-protected qubit even at high energies. Floquet engineering - the idea that a periodically driven non-equilibrium system can effectively emulate the physics of a different Hamiltonian - is used to simulate an ffective three-body interaction among spins in one dimension, using time-dependent two-body interactions only. In the effective system emulated topology a…
Periodic driving has emerged as a powerful experimental tool to engineer physical properties of isolated, synthetic quantum systems. However, due to the lack of energy conservation and heating effects, non-trivial (e.g., topological) many-body states in periodically driven (Floquet) systems are generally metastable. Therefore it is necessary to find strategies for preparing long-lived many-body states in Floquet systems. We develop a theoretical framework for describing the dynamical preparation of states in Floquet systems by a slow turn-on of the drive. We find that the dynamics of the syste…
