We study a one-dimensional Ising model with a magnetic field and show that tilting the field induces a transition to quantum chaos. We explore the stationary states of this Hamiltonian to show the intimate connection between entanglement and avoided crossings. In general entanglement gets exchanged between the states undergoing an avoided crossing with an overall enhancement of multipartite entanglement at the closest point of approach, simultaneously accompanied by diminishing two-body entanglement as measured by concurrence. We find that both for stationary as well as nonstationary states, nonintegrability leads to a destruction of two-body correlations and distributes entanglement more globally.
A widely accepted definition of ``quantum chaos'' is ``the behavior of a quantum system whose \emph{classical} \emph{limit is chaotic}''. The dynamics of quantum-chaotic systems is nevertheless very different from that of their classical counterparts. A fundamental reason for that is the linearity of Schr{ö}dinger equation. In this paper, we study the quantum dynamics of an ultra-cold quantum degenerate gas in a tilted optical lattice and show that it displays features very close to \emph{classical} chaos. We show that its phase space is organized according to the Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser theor…
Chaotic walking of cold atoms in a tilted optical lattice, created by two counter propagating running waves with an additional external field, is demonstrated theoretically and numerically in the semiclassical and Hamiltonian approximations. The effect consists in random-like changing the direction of atomic motion in a rigid lattice under the influence of a constant force due to a specific behavior of the atomic dipole-moment component that changes abruptly in a random-like manner while atoms cross standing-wave nodes. Chaotic walking generates a fractal-like scattering of atoms that manifest…
The dynamics of a (quasi)one-dimensional interacting atomic Bose-Einstein condensate in a tilted optical lattice is studied in a discrete mean-field approximation, i.e., in terms of the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation. If the static field is varied the system shows a plethora of dynamical phenomena. In the strong field limit we demonstrate the existence of (almost) non-spreading states which remain localized on the lattice region populated initially and show coherent Bloch oscillations with fractional revivals in the momentum space (so called quantum carpets). With decreasing field, th…
The fidelity, defined as overlap of eigenstates of two slightly different Hamiltonians, is proposed as an efficient detector of avoided c rossings in the energy spectrum. This new application of fidelity is motivated for model systems, and its value for analyzing complex qua ntum spectra is underlined by applying it to a random matrix model and a tilted Bose-Hubbard system.
The relation between the Shannon entropy and avoided crossings is investigated in dielectric microcavities. The Shannon entropy of probability density for eigenfunctions in an open elliptic billiard as well as a closed quadrupole billiard increases as the center of avoided crossing is approached. These results are opposite to those of atomic physics for electrons. It is found that the collective Lamb shift of the open quantum system and the symmetry breaking in the closed chaotic quantum system give equivalent effects to the Shannon entropy.
We present an experimental study of an optomechanical system formed by a vibrating thin semi-transparent membrane within a high-finesse optical cavity. We show that the coupling between the optical cavity modes and the vibrational modes of the membrane can be tuned by varying the membrane position and orientation. In particular we demonstrate a large quadratic dispersive optomechanical coupling in correspondence with avoided crossings between optical cavity modes weakly coupled by scattering at the membrane surface. The experimental results are well explained by a first order perturbation trea…
We numerically examine slow and hierarchical relaxation dynamics of interacting bosons described by a tilted two-band Bose-Hubbard model. The system is found to exhibit signatures of quantum chaos within the spectrum and the validity of the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis for relevant physical observables is demonstrated for certain parameter regimes. Using the truncated Wigner representation in the semiclassical limit of the system, dynamics of relevant observables reveal hierarchical relaxation and the appearance of prethermalized states is studied from the perspective of statistics of …
The aim of the current work is the research of the influence of the \textbf{tilted} magnetic field direction on statistical properties of energy levels of a two-dimensional (2D) hydrogen atom and of an exciton in GaAs/Al$_{0.33}$Ga$_{0.67}$As quantum well. It was discovered that the quantum chaos (QC) is initiated with an increasing angle $α$ between the magnetic field direction and the normal to the atomic plane. QC is characterized by the repulsion of levels leading to the eliminating of the shell structure and by changing the spectrum statistical properties. The evolution of the spatial dis…
We review application of level dynamics to spectra of quantally chaotic systems. We show that statistical mechanics approach gives us predictions about level statistics intermediate between integrable and chaotic dynamics. Then we discuss in detail different statistical measures involving level dynamics such as level avoided-crossing distributions, slope and curvature of level distributions showing both the postulate of unversality and its limitations. We mention shortly the experimental confirmations of these theories. We concentrate in some detail on measures imported from quantum informatio…
Systems of interacting bosons in triple-well potentials are of significant theoretical and experimental interest. They are explored in contexts that range from quantum phase transitions and quantum dynamics to semiclassical analysis. Here, we systematically investigate the onset of quantum chaos in a triple-well model that moves away from integrability as its potential gets tilted. Even in its deepest chaotic regime, the system presents features reminiscent of integrability. Our studies are based on level spacing distribution and spectral form factor, structure of the eigenstates, diagonal and…
We propose a phase-space Wigner harmonics entropy measure for many-body quantum dynamical complexity. This measure, which reduces to the well known measure of complexity in classical systems and which is valid for both pure and mixed states in single-particle and many-body systems, takes into account the combined role of chaos and entanglement in the realm of quantum mechanics. The effectiveness of the measure is illustrated in the example of the Ising chain in a homogeneous tilted magnetic field. We provide numerical evidence that the multipartite entanglement generation leads to a linear inc…
For the hydrogen atom in combined magnetic and electric fields we investigate the dependence of the quantum spectra, classical dynamics, and statistical distributions of energy levels on the mutual orientation of the two external fields. Resonance energies and oscillator strengths are obtained by exact diagonalization of the Hamiltonian in a complete basis set, even far above the ionization threshold. At high excitation energies around the Stark saddle point the eigenenergies exhibit strong level repulsions when the angle between the fields is varied. The large avoided crossings occur between …
We study an experimentally realizable paradigm of complex many-body quantum systems, a two-band Wannier-Stark model, for which diffusion in Hilbert space as well as many-body Landau-Zener processes can be engineered. A cross-over between regular to quantum chaotic spectra is found within the many-body avoided crossings at resonant tunneling conditions. The spectral properties are shown to determine the evolution of states across a cascade of Landau-Zener events. We apply the obtained spectral information to study the non-equilibrium dynamics of our many-body system in different parameter regim…
Relaxation of few-body quantum systems can strongly depend on the initial state when the system's semiclassical phase space is mixed, i.e., regions of chaotic motion coexist with regular islands. In recent years, there has been much effort to understand the process of thermalization in strongly interacting quantum systems that often lack an obvious semiclassical limit. Time-dependent variational principle (TDVP) allows to systematically derive an effective classical (nonlinear) dynamical system by projecting unitary many-body dynamics onto a manifold of weakly-entangled variational states. We …
