Convection in the Sun occurs at Rayleigh numbers, $Ra$, as high as $10^{22}$, molecular Prandtl numbers, $Pr$, as low as $10^{-6}$, under conditions that are far from satisfying the Oberbeck-Boussinesq (OB) idealization. The effects of these extreme circumstances on turbulent heat transport are unknown, and no comparable conditions exist on Earth. Our goal is to understand how these effects scale (since we cannot yet replicate the Sun's conditions faithfully). We study thermal convection by using direct numerical simulations, and determine the variation with respect to $Pr$, to values as low as $10^{-4}$, of the turbulent Prandtl number, $Pr_t$, which is the ratio of turbulent viscosity to thermal diffusivity. The simulations are primarily two-dimensional but we draw upon some three-dimensional results as well. We focus on non-Oberbeck-Boussinesq (NOB) conditions of a certain type, but also study OB convection for comparison. The OB simulations are performed in a rectangular box of aspect ratio 2 by varying $Pr$ from $O(10)$ to $10^{-4}$ at fixed Grashof number $Gr \equiv Ra/Pr = 10^9$. The NOB simulations are done in the same box by letting only the thermal diffusivity depend on the temperature. Here, the Rayleigh number is fixed at the top boundary while the mean $Pr$ varies in the bulk from 0.07 to $5 \times 10^{-4}$. The three-dimensional simulations are performed in a box of aspect ratio 25 at a fixed Rayleigh number of $10^5$, and $0.005 \leq Pr \leq 7$. The principal finding is that $Pr_t$ increases with decreasing $Pr$ in both OB and NOB convection: $Pr_t \sim Pr^{-0.3}$ for OB convection and $Pr_t \sim Pr^{-1}$ for the NOB case. The $Pr_t$-dependence for the NOB case especially suggests that convective flows in the astrophysical settings behave effectively as in high-Prandtl-number turbulence.
In an attempt to understand the role of the strong radial dependence of thermal diffusivity on the properties of convection in sun-like stars, we mimic that effect in non-Oberbeck-Boussinesq (NOB) convection in a horizontally-extended rectangular domain (aspect ratio 16), by allowing the thermal diffusivity $κ$ to increase with the temperature (as in the case of stars). Direct numerical simulations (i.e., numerical solutions of the governing equations by resolving up to the smallest scales without requiring any modeling) show that, in comparison with Oberbeck-Boussinesq (OB) simulations (two o…
(abridged) Context: The ratio of kinematic viscosity to thermal diffusivity, the Prandtl number, is much smaller than unity in stellar convection zones. Aims: To study the statistics of convective flows and energy transport as functions of the Prandtl number. Methods: Three-dimensional numerical simulations convection in Cartesian geometry are used. The convection zone (CZ) is embedded between two stably stratified layers. Statistics and transport properties of up- and downflows are studied separately. Results: The rms velocity increases with decreasing Prandtl number. At the same time the fil…
We determine the asymptotic conditions under which the Boussinesq approximation is valid for oscillatory convection in a rapidly rotating fluid. In the astrophysically relevant parameter regime of small Prandtl number, we show that the Boussinesq prediction for the onset of convection is valid only under much more restrictive conditions than those that are usually assumed. In the case of an ideal gas, we recover the Boussinesq results only if the ratio of the domain height to a typical scale height is much smaller than the Prandtl number. This requires an extremely shallow domain in the astrop…
Fingering convection (otherwise known as thermohaline convection) is an instability that occurs in stellar radiative interiors in the presence of unstable compositional gradients. Numerical simulations have been used in order to estimate the efficiency of mixing induced by this instability. However, fully three-dimensional (3D) computations in the parameter regime appropriate for stellar astrophysics (i.e. low Prandtl number) are prohibitively expensive. This raises the question of whether two-dimensional (2D) simulations could be used instead to achieve the same goals. In this work, we addres…
We study the stability and dynamics of non-Boussinesq convection in pure gases (CO$_2$ and SF$_6$) with Prandtl numbers near $Pr\simeq 1$ and in a H$_2$-Xe mixture with $Pr=0.17$. Focusing on the strongly nonlinear regime we employ Galerkin stability analyses and direct numerical simulations of the Navier-Stokes equations. For $Pr \simeq 1$ and intermediate non-Boussinesq effects we find reentrance of stable hexagons as the Rayleigh number is increased. For stronger non-Boussinesq effects the hexagons do not exhibit any amplitude instability to rolls. Seemingly, this result contradicts the exp…
We examine the dynamics associated with weakly compressible convection in a spherical shell by running 3D direct numerical simulations using the Boussinesq formalism [1]. Motivated by problems in astrophysics, we assume the existence of a finite adiabatic temperature gradient $\nabla T_{\rm{ad}}$ and use mixed boundary conditions for the temperature with fixed flux at the inner boundary and fixed temperature at the outer boundary. This setup is intrinsically more asymmetric than the more standard case of Rayleigh-Bénard convection in liquids between parallel plates with fixed temperature bound…
Horizontally extended turbulent convection, termed mesoscale convection in natural systems, remains a challenge to investigate in both experiments and simulations. This is particularly so for very low molecular Prandtl numbers as in stellar convection and in Earth's outer core. The present study reports three-dimensional direct numerical simulations of turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection in square boxes of side length $L$ and height $H$ with the aspect ratio $Γ=L/H$ of 25, for Prandtl numbers that span almost 4 orders of magnitude, $10^{-3}\le Pr \le 7$, and Rayleigh numbers $10^5 \le Ra \le …
The shape of velocity and temperature profiles near the horizontal conducting plates in turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection are studied numerically and experimentally over the Rayleigh number range $10^8\lesssim Ra\lesssim3\times10^{11}$ and the Prandtl number range $0.7\lesssim Pr\lesssim5.4$. The results show that both the temperature and velocity profiles well agree with the classical Prandtl-Blasius laminar boundary-layer profiles, if they are re-sampled in the respective dynamical reference frames that fluctuate with the instantaneous thermal and velocity boundary-layer thicknesses.
We present a detailed bifurcation structure and associated flow patterns for low-Prandtl number ($P=0.0002, 0.002, 0.005, 0.02$) Rayleigh-Bénard convection near its onset. We use both direct numerical simulations and a 30-mode low-dimensional model for this study. We observe that low-Prandtl number (low-P) convection exhibits similar patterns and chaos as zero-P convection \cite{pal:2009}, namely squares, asymmetric squares, oscillating asymmetric squares, relaxation oscillations, and chaos. At the onset of convection, low-P convective flows have stationary 2D rolls and associated stationary a…
Small-scale dynamo action is often held responsible for the generation of quiet-Sun magnetic fields. We aim to determine the excitation conditions and saturation level of small-scale dynamos in non-rotating turbulent convection at low magnetic Prandtl numbers. We use high resolution direct numerical simulations of weakly stratified turbulent convection. We find that the critical magnetic Reynolds number for dynamo excitation increases as the magnetic Prandtl number is decreased, which might suggest that small-scale dynamo action is not automatically evident in bodies with small magnetic Prandt…
We show the possibility of quasiperiodic waves at the onset of thermal convection in a thin horizontal layer of slowly rotating zero-Prandtl number Boussinesq fluid confined between stress-free conducting boundaries. Two independent frequencies emerge due to an interaction between a stationary instability and a self-tuned wavy instability in presence of coriolis force, if Taylor number is raised above a critical value. Constructing a dynamical system for the hydrodynamical problem, the competition between the interacting instabilities is analyzed. The forward bifurcation from the conductive st…
Results from direct numerical simulation for three-dimensional Rayleigh-Bénard convection in samples of aspect ratio $Γ=0.23$ and $Γ=0.5$ up to Rayleigh number $Ra=2\times10^{12}$ are presented. The broad range of Prandtl numbers $0.5<Pr<10$ is considered. In contrast to some experiments, we do not see any increase in $Nu/Ra^{1/3}$, neither due to $Pr$ number effects, nor due to a constant heat flux boundary condition at the bottom plate instead of constant temperature boundary conditions. Even at these very high $Ra$, both the thermal and kinetic boundary layer thicknesses obey Prandtl-Blasiu…
Horizontal Convection (HC) at large Rayleigh and Prandtl numbers, is studied experimentally in a regime up to seven orders of magnitude larger in terms of Rayleigh numbers than previously achieved. To reach Rayleigh up to $10^{17}$, the horizontal density gradient is generated using differential solutal convection by a differential input of salt and fresh water controlled by diffusion in a novel experiment where the zero-net mass flux of water is ensured through permeable membranes. This setup allows for measuring accurately the Nusselt number in solutal convection by carefully controlling the…
We investigate the utility of the convex hull of many Lagrangian tracers to analyze transport properties of turbulent flows with different anisotropy. In direct numerical simulations of statistically homogeneous and stationary Navier-Stokes turbulence, neutral fluid Boussinesq convection, and MHD Boussinesq convection a comparison with Lagrangian pair dispersion shows that convex hull statistics capture the asymptotic dispersive behavior of a large group of passive tracer particles. Moreover, convex hull analysis provides additional information on the sub-ensemble of tracers that on average di…
The transition to a new turbulent regime in horizontal convection in the case of low Prandtl numbers is analyzed using the Shishkina, Grossmann & Lohse (SGL) theory. The flow driven by the horizontal gradient along a horizontal surface, perpendicular to the acceleration of gravity is shown to transition to turbulence in the plume and the core. This transition to turbulence sets a sequence of heat transfer and momentum transport scalings which are found to follow the SGL prediction for the scaling factors and the prediction of Hughes, Griffith & Mullarney (HGM) for larger forcing amplitudes. Th…
This work applies a continuous data assimilation scheme---a particular framework for reconciling sparse and potentially noisy observations to a mathematical model---to Rayleigh-Bénard convection at infinite or large Prandtl numbers using only the temperature field as observables. These Prandtl numbers are applicable to the earth's mantle and to gases under high pressure. We rigorously identify conditions that guarantee synchronization between the observed system and the model, then confirm the applicability of these results via numerical simulations. Our numerical experiments show that the ana…
The effect of a homogeneous magnetic field on surface-tension-driven Bénard convection is studied by means of direct numerical simulations. The flow is computed in a rectangular domain with periodic horizontal boundary conditions and the free-slip condition on the bottom wall using a pseudospectral Fourier-Chebyshev discretization. Deformations of the free surface are neglected. Two- and three-dimensional flows are computed for either vanishing or small Prandtl number, which are typical of liquid metals. The main focus of the paper is on a qualitative comparison of the flow states with the non…
The influence of symmetrical non-Oberbeck-Boussinesq (SNOB) effect on statistical and scaling properties of temperature field in turbulent convection is investigated experimentally in $SF_{6}$ in the vicinity of its gas-liquid critical point (CP). The main conclusion of the studies is that besides the strong $Ra$ and $Pr$ dependence of the rms of temperature fluctuations normalized by the temperature difference across the cell, different from the Oberbeck-Boussinesq (OB) case of turbulent convection, all rest of statistical and scaling properties of temperature field discussed in details are t…
A low-dimensional model of large Prandtl-number ($P$) Rayleigh Bénard convection is constructed using some of the important modes of pseudospectral direct numerical simulations. A detailed bifurcation analysis of the low-dimensional model for $P=6.8$ and aspect ratio of $2\sqrt{2}$ reveals a rich instability and chaos picture: steady rolls, time-periodicity, quasiperiodicity, phase locking, chaos, and crisis. Bifurcation analysis also reveals multiple co-existing attractors, and a window with time-periodicity after chaos. The results of the low-dimensional model matches quite closely with some…
Convection is the predominant mechanism by which energy and angular momentum are transported in the outer portion of the Sun. The resulting overturning motions are also the primary energy source for the solar magnetic field. An accurate solar dynamo model therefore requires a complete description of the convective motions, but these motions remain poorly understood. Studying stellar convection numerically remains challenging; it occurs within a parameter regime that is extreme by computational standards. The fluid properties of the convection zone are characterized in part by the Prandtl numbe…
Using direct numerical simulations of Rayleigh-Bénard convection (RBC), we perform a comparative study of the spectra and fluxes of energy and entropy, and the scaling of large-scale quantities for large and infinite Prandtl numbers in two (2D) and three (3D) dimensions. We observe close similarities between the 2D and 3D RBC, in particular the kinetic energy spectrum $E_u(k) \sim k^{-13/3}$, and the entropy spectrum exhibits a dual branch with a dominant $k^{-2}$ spectrum. We showed that the dominant Fourier modes in the 2D and 3D flows are very close. Consequently, the 3D RBC is quasi two-di…
Bounds for the poloidal and toroidal kinetic energies and the heat transport are computed numerically for rotating convection at infinite Prandtl number with both no slip and stress free boundaries. The constraints invoked in this computation are linear or quadratic in the problem variables and lead to the formulation of a semidefinite program. The bounds behave as a function of Rayleigh number at fixed Taylor number qualitatively in the same way as the quantities being bounded. The bounds are zero for Rayleigh numbers smaller than the critical Rayleigh number for the onset of convection, they…
Experimental and numerical data for the heat transfer as a function of the Rayleigh-, Prandtl-, and Rossby numbers in turbulent rotating Rayleigh-Benard convection are presented. For relatively small $Ra ~ 10^8$ and large Pr modest rotation can enhance the heat transfer by up to 30%. At larger Ra there is less heat-transfer enhancement, and at small Pr = 0.7. there is no heat-transfer enhancement at all. We suggest that the small-Pr behavior is due to the breakdown of the heat-transfer-enhancing Ekman pumping because of larger thermal diffusion.
We analyze the Prandtl number (Pr) dependence of spectra and fluxes of kinetic energy, as well as the energy injection rates and dissipation rates, of turbulent thermal convection using numerical data. As expected, for a flow with $ \mathrm{Pr} \lessapprox 1 $, the inertial-range kinetic energy flux is constant, and the kinetic energy spectrum is Kolmogorov-like ($ k^{-5/3} $). More importantly, we show that the amplitudes of the kinetic energy fluxes and spectra and those of structure functions increase with the decrease of Pr, thus exhibiting stronger nonlinearity for flows with small Prandt…
The dynamics of fluids deep in stellar interiors is a subject that bears many similarities with geophysical fluid dynamics, with one crucial difference: the Prandtl number. The ratio of the kinematic viscosity to the thermal diffusivity is usually of order unity or more on Earth, but is always much smaller than one in stars. As a result, viscosity remains negligible on scales that are thermally diffusive, which opens the door to a whole new region of parameter space, namely the turbulent low Péclet number regime (where the Péclet number is the product of the Prandtl number and the Reynolds num…
The original Oberbeck-Boussinesq (OB) equations which are the coupled two dimensional Navier-Stokes(NS) and heat conduction equations have been investigated by E.N. Lorenz half a century ago with Fourier series and opened the way to the paradigm of chaos. In our former study-Chaos, Solitons and Fractals78, 249 (2015)-we presented fully analytic solutions for the velocity, pressure and temperature fields with the aim of the self-similar Ansatz and gave a possible explanation of the Rayleigh--Bènard convection cells. Now we generalize the Oberbeck-Boussinesq hydrodynamical system, going beyond t…
Two-dimensional Boussinesq convection is studied numerically with very fine spatial resolutions up to 4096^2. Our numerical study starts with a smooth asymmetric initial condition, which is chosen to make the flow field well confined in the computational domain until the blow-up time (T_c). Our study shows that the vorticity will blow up at a finite time with |ω|_{max} \~{(T_c-t)}^{-1.61} and |\nabla θ|_{max} ~ {(T_c - t)}^{-3.58}.
Buoyancy effect on low-flow condition convective heat transfer of non-conventional coolants, such as liquid metal and molten salts, is a crucial safety factor to advanced reactors under transient or accidental scenarios. The distinct heat transfer characteristics of non-unitary Prandtl fluids and the inherent complexity of the low-flow mixed convection phenomena requires the development of novel turbulent and heat transfer models that are adaptive to different spatiotemporal scales involved in the mixed convection heat transfer. In this work, direct numerical simulation of low-flow mixed conve…
We compute the spectra and fluxes of the velocity and temperature fields in Rayleigh-Bénard convection in turbulent regime for a wide range of Prandtl numbers using pseudo-spectral simulations on $512^3$ grids. Our spectral and flux results support the Kolmogorov-Obukhov (KO) scaling for zero Prandtl number and low Prandtl number ($P=0.02$) convection. The KO scaling for the velocity field in zero-Prandtl number and low-Prandtl number convection is because of the weak buoyancy in the inertial range (buoyancy is active only at the very low wavenumbers). We also observe that for intermediate Pra…
We review recent computational results for hexagon patterns in non-Boussinesq convection. For sufficiently strong dependence of the fluid parameters on the temperature we find reentrance of steady hexagons, i.e. while near onset the hexagon patterns become unstable to rolls as usually, they become again stable in the strongly nonlinear regime. If the convection apparatus is rotated about a vertical axis the transition from hexagons to rolls is replaced by a Hopf bifurcation to whirling hexagons. For weak non-Boussinesq effects they display defect chaos of the type described by the two-dimensio…
In turbulent wall sheared thermal convection, there are three different flow regimes, depending on the relative relevance of thermal forcing and wall shear. In this paper we report the results of direct numerical simulations of such sheared Rayleigh-Bénard convection, at fixed Rayleigh number $Ra=10^6$, varying the wall Reynolds number in the range $0 \leq Re_w \leq 4000$ and Prandtl number $0.22 \leq Pr \leq 4.6$, extending our prior work by Blass et al. (2020), where $Pr$ was kept constant at unity and the thermal forcing ($Ra$) varied. We cover a wide span of bulk Richardson numbers $0.014 …
Using the energy method we investigate the stability of pure conduction in Pearson's model for Bénard-Marangoni convection in a layer of fluid at infinite Prandtl number. Upon extending the space of admissible perturbations to the conductive state, we find an exact solution to the energy stability variational problem for a range of thermal boundary conditions describing perfectly conducting, imperfectly conducting, and insulating boundaries. Our analysis extends and improves previous results, and shows that with the energy method global stability can be proven up to the linear instability thre…
Non-Oberbeck-Boussinesq (NOB) effects on the flow organization in two-dimensional Rayleigh-Benard turbulence are numerically analyzed. The working fluid is water. We focus on the temperature profiles, the center temperature, the Nusselt number, and on the analysis of the velocity field. Several velocity amplitudes (or Reynolds numbers) and several kinetic profiles are introduced and studied; these together describe the various features of the rather complex flow organization. The results are presented both as functions of the Rayleigh number Ra (with Ra up to 10^8) for fixed temperature differ…
We report the existence of two new limiting turbulent regimes in horizontal convection (HC) using direct numerical simulations at intermediate to low Prandtl numbers. The flow driven by a horizontal gradient along a horizontal surface, perpendicular to the acceleration of gravity is shown to transition to turbulence in the plume and the core, modifying the rate of heat and momentum transport. These transitions set a sequence of scaling laws blending the theoretical arguments from both the Shishkina, Grossmann & Lohse (SGL) theory with the Hughes, Griffiths & Mullarney (HGM) regime. These resul…
We consider the onset of Boussinesq convection in a horizontal layer of electrically conducting incompressible fluid with rigid electrically insulating horizontal boundaries. The fluid is heated from below and rotates about a vertical axis; vertical magnetic field is imposed. The instability of the trivial steady state (fluid at rest) can be monotonic or oscillatory depending on parameters of the problem (the kinematic and magnetic Prandtl, Taylor and Chandrasekhar numbers). If the Taylor number is sufficiently large, convective rolls, emerging in the monotonic instability, experience the Küpp…
Statistical properties of turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection at low Prandtl numbers (Pr), which are typical for liquid metals such as mercury, gallium or liquid sodium, are investigated in high-resolution three-dimensional spectral element simulations in a closed cylindrical cell with an aspect ratio of one and are compared to previous turbulent convection simulations in air. We compare the scaling of global momentum and heat transfer. The scaling exponents are found to be in agreement with experiments. Mean profiles of the root-mean-square velocity as well as the thermal and kinetic energy …
We report on experimental determinations of the temperature field in the interior (bulk) of turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection for a cylindrical sample with aspect ratio (diameter over height) of 0.50, both in the classical and in the ultimate state. The Prandtl number was close to 0.8. We find a "logarithmic layer" in which the temperature varies as A*ln(z/L) + B with the distance z from the bottom plate of the sample. The amplitude A varies with radial position r. In the classical state these results are in good agreement with direct numerical simulations (DNS); in the ultimate state there…
While non-Boussinesq hexagonal convection patterns are well known to be stable close to threshold (i.e. for Rayleigh numbers $R \approx R_c$), it has often been assumed that they are always unstable to rolls already for slightly higher Rayleigh numbers. Using the {\em incompressible} Navier-Stokes equations for parameters corresponding to water as a working fluid, we perform full numerical stability analyses of hexagons in the strongly nonlinear regime ($ε\equiv R-R_c/R_c=\mathcal{O}(1)$). We find `reentrant' behavior of the hexagons, i.e. as $ε$ is increased they can lose and {\it regain} sta…
The value of the Prandtl number $P$ exerts a strong influence on convection-driven dynamos in rotating spherical shells filled with electrically conducting fluids. Low Prandtl numbers promote dynamo action through the shear provided by differential rotation, while the generation of magnetic fields is more difficult to sustain in high-Prandtl-number fluids where higher values of the magnetic Prandtl number $P_m$ are required. The magnetostrophic approximation often used in dynamo theory appears to be valid only for relatively high values of $P$ and $P_m$. Dynamos with a minimum value of $P_m$ s…
We derive an improved rigorous bound on the space and time averaged temperature $<T>$ of an infinite Prandtl number Boussinesq fluid contained between isothermal no-slip boundaries thermally driven by uniform internal heating. A novel approach is used wherein a singular stable stratification is introduced as a perturbation to a non-singular background profile, yielding the estimate $<T>\geq 0.419[R\log(R)]^{-1/4}$ where $R$ is the heat Rayleigh number. The analysis relies on a generalized Hardy-Rellich inequality that is proved in the appendix.
We prove a new rigorous upper bound on the vertical heat transport for Bénard-Marangoni convection of a two- or three-dimensional fluid layer with infinite Prandtl number. Precisely, for Marangoni number $Ma \gg 1$ the Nusselt number $Nu$ is bounded asymptotically by $Nu \lesssim Ma^{2/7}(\ln Ma)^{-1/7}$. Key to our proof are a background temperature field with a hyperbolic profile near the fluid's surface, and new estimates for the coupling between temperature and vertical velocity.
A study of convection in a circular two dimensional cell is presented. The system is heated and cooled at two diametrically opposed points on the edge of the circle, which are parallel or anti-parallel to gravity. The latter's role in the plane of the cell can be changed by tilting the cell. When the system is in a horizontal position, a non-trivial analytic solution for the temperature distribution of the quiescent fluid can be found. For a slight inclination, the projection of gravity in the plane of the cell is used as a perturbation parameter in the full hydrodynamic description, as the Bo…
We study hexagon patterns in non-Boussinesq convection of a thin rotating layer of water. For realistic parameters and boundary conditions we identify various linear instabilities of the pattern. We focus on the dynamics arising from an oscillatory side-band instability that leads to a spatially disordered chaotic state characterized by oscillating (whirling) hexagons. Using triangulation we obtain the distribution functions for the number of pentagonal and heptagonal convection cells. In contrast to the results found for defect chaos in the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation and in inclined-lay…
We discuss two aspects of turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection (RBC) on the basis of high-resolution direct numerical simulations in a unique setting; a closed cylindrical cell of aspect ratio of one. First, we present a comprehensive comparison of statistical quantities such as energy dissipation rates and boundary layer thickness scales. Data are used from three simulation run series at Prandtl numbers $Pr$ that cover two orders of magnitude. In contrast to most previous studies in RBC the focus of the present work is on convective turbulence at very low Prandtl numbers including $Pr=0.021$ …
In this paper, we investigate the upward overshooting by three-dimensional numerical simulations. We find that the above convectively stable zone can be partitioned into three layers: the thermal adjustment layer (mixing both entropy and material), the turbulent dissipation layer (mixing material but not entropy), and the thermal dissipation layer (mixing neither entropy nor material). The turbulent dissipation layer is separated from the thermal adjustment layer and the thermal dissipation layer by the first and second zero points of the vertical velocity correlation. The simulation results a…
Numerical data for the heat transfer as a function of the Prandtl (Pr) and Rossby (Ro) numbers in turbulent rotating Rayleigh-Benard convection are presented for Rayleigh number Ra = 10^8. When Ro is fixed the heat transfer enhancement with respect to the non-rotating value shows a maximum as function of Pr. This maximum is due to the reduced efficiency of Ekman pumping when Pr becomes too small or too large. When Pr becomes small, i.e. for large thermal diffusivity, the heat that is carried by the vertical vortices spreads out in the middle of the cell, and Ekman pumping thus becomes less eff…
Results on the Prandtl-Blasius type kinetic and thermal boundary layer thicknesses in turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection in a broad range of Prandtl numbers are presented. By solving the laminar Prandtl-Blasius boundary layer equations, we calculate the ratio of the thermal and kinetic boundary layer thicknesses, which depends on the Prandtl number Pr only. It is approximated as $0.588Pr^{-1/2}$ for $Pr\ll Pr^*$ and as $0.982 Pr^{-1/3}$ for $Pr^*\ll\Pr$, with $Pr^*= 0.046$. Comparison of the Prandtl--Blasius velocity boundary layer thickness with that evaluated in the direct numerical simula…
Under the limit of infinite Prandtl number, we derive analytical expressions for the large-scale quantities, e.g., Péclet number Pe, Nusselt number Nu, and rms value of the temperature fluctuations $θ_\mathrm{rms}$. We complement the analytical work with direct numerical simulations, and show that $\mathrm{Nu} \sim \mathrm{Ra}^γ$ with $γ\approx (0.30-0.32)$, $\mathrm{Pe} \sim \mathrm{Ra}^η$ with $η\approx (0.57-0.61)$, and $θ_\mathrm{rms} \sim \mathrm{const}$. The Nusselt number is observed to be an intricate function of $\mathrm{Pe}$, $θ_\mathrm{rms}$, and a correlation function between the v…
Most large-scale planetary magnetic fields are thought to be driven by low Rossby number convection of a low magnetic Prandtl number fluid. Here kinematic dynamo action is investigated with an asymptotic, rapidly rotating dynamo model for the plane layer geometry that is intrinsically low magnetic Prandtl number. The thermal Prandtl number and Rayleigh number are varied to illustrate fundamental changes in flow regime, ranging from laminar cellular convection to geostrophic turbulence in which an inverse energy cascade is present. A decrease in the efficiency of the convection to generate a dy…
As shown in earlier work (Ahlers et al., J. Fluid Mech. 569, p.409 (2006)), non-Oberbeck Boussinesq (NOB) corrections to the center temperature in turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection in water and also in glycerol are governed by the temperature dependences of the kinematic viscosity and the thermal diffusion coefficient. If the working fluid is ethane close to the critical point the origin of non-Oberbeck-Boussinesq corrections is very different, as will be shown in the present paper. Namely, the main origin of NOB corrections then lies in the strong temperature dependence of the isobaric the…
In this study we follow Grossmann and Lohse, Phys. Rev. Lett. 86 (2001), who derived various scalings regimes for the dependence of the Nusselt number $Nu$ and the Reynolds number $Re$ on the Rayleigh number $Ra$ and the Prandtl number $Pr$. We focus on theoretical arguments as well as on numerical simulations for the case of large-$Pr$ natural thermal convection. Based on an analysis of self-similarity of the boundary layer equations, we derive that in this case the limiting large-$Pr$ boundary-layer dominated regime is I$_\infty^<$, introduced and defined in [1], with the scaling relations $…
One prominent feature in the atmospheres of Jupiter and Saturn is the appearance of large-scale vortices. However, the sustaining mechanism of these large-scale vortices remains unclear. One possible mechanism is that these large-scale vortices are driven by rotating convection. Here we present numerical simulation results on rapidly rotating Rayleigh-Bénard convection at a small Prandtl number $Pr=0.1$ (close to the turbulent Prandtl numbers of Jupiter and Saturn). We have identified four flow regimes in our simulation: multiple small vortices, coexisted large-scale cyclone and anticyclone, l…
Observations suggest that the large-scale convective velocities obtained by solar convection simulations might be over-estimated (convective conundrum). One plausible solution to this could be the small-scale dynamo which cannot be fully resolved by global simulations. The small-scale Lorentz force suppresses the convective motions and also the turbulent mixing of entropy between upflows and downflows, leading to a large effective Prandtl number ($\Pr$). We explore this idea in three-dimensional global rotating convection simulations at different thermal conductivity ($κ$), i.e., at different …
