The advection and mixing of a scalar quantity by fluid flow is an important problem in engineering and natural sciences. If the fluid is turbulent, the statistics of the passive scalar exhibit complex behavior. This paper is concerned with two Lagrangian scalar turbulence models based on the recent fluid deformation model that can be shown to reproduce the statistics of passive scalar turbulence for a range of Reynolds numbers. For these models, we demonstrate how events of extreme passive scalar gradients can be recovered by computing the instanton, i.e., the saddle-point configuration of the associated stochastic field theory. It allows us to both reproduce the heavy-tailed statistics associated with passive scalar turbulence, and recover the most likely mechanism leading to such extreme events. We further demonstrate that events of large negative strain in these models undergo spontaneous symmetry breaking.
Instanton calculations are performed in the context of stationary Burgers turbulence to estimate the tails of the probability density function (PDF) of velocity gradients. These results are then compared to those obtained from massive direct numerical simulations (DNS) of the randomly forced Burgers equation. The instanton predictions are shown to agree with the DNS in a wide range of regimes, including those that are far from the limiting cases previously considered in the literature. These results settle the controversy of the relevance of the instanton approach for the prediction of the vel…

We discuss the role of particular velocity field configurations -- instantons, for short -- which are supposed to dominate the flow during the occurrence of extreme turbulent circulation events. Instanton equations, devised for the stochastic hydrodynamic setup of homogeneous and isotropic turbulence, are applied to the interpretation of direct numerical simulation results. We are able in this way to model the time evolution of extreme circulation events for a broad range of scales, through the combined use of eddy viscosity phenomenology and exact creeping instantons. While this approach work…
In the context of instanton method for stochastic system this paper purposes a modification of the arclength parametrization of the Hamilton's equations allowing for an arbitrary instanton speed. The main results of the paper are: (i) it generalizes the parametrized Hamilton's equations to any speed required. (ii) corrects the parametric action on the occasion that the Hamiltonian is small but finite and how it adjusts to the probability density function (pdf). (iii) Improves instanton approximation to pdf by noise and propagator renormalization. As an application of the above set up we predic…
Passive scalars in turbulent channel flows are investigated as canonical problem for heat and mass transfer in turbulent boundary-layer flows. The one-dimensional turbulence model is used to numerically investigate the Schmidt and Reynolds number dependence of the scalar transfer to a wall due to fluctuating wall-normal transport. First, the model is calibrated for low-order velocity statistics. After that, we keep the model parameters fixed and investigate low-order passive scalar statistics for a relevant Schmidt and Reynolds number range. We show that the model consistently predicts the bou…
The reduction of dimensionality of physical systems, specially in fluid dynamics, leads in many situations to nonlinear ordinary differential equations which have global invariant manifolds with algebraic expressions containing relevant physical information of the original system. We present a method to identify such manifolds, and we apply it to a reduced model for the Lagrangian evolution of field gradients in homogeneous and isotropic turbulence with a passive scalar.
Self-consistent closure theory for passive-scalar turbulence has been developed on the basis of the Hessian of the scalar field. As a primitive indicator of spatial structure of the scalar, we employ the Hessian into the core of the theory to properly characterize the time scale intrinsic to the scalar field itself. The resultant closure model is now endowed with several realistic features, i.e. the scale-locality of the interscale interaction, the detailed conservation, and the memory-fading effect. Applying the current theory to the inertial-convective range eventually leads to self-consiste…
In experiments and numerical simulations we measured angles between the symmetry axes of small spheroids advected in turbulence ("passive directors"). Since turbulent strains tend to align nearby spheroids, one might think that their relative angles are quite small. We show that this intuition fails in general because angles between the symmetry axes of nearby particles are anomalously large. We identify two mechanisms that cause this phenomenon. First, the dynamics evolves to a fractal attractor despite the fact that the fluid velocity is spatially smooth at small scales. Second, this fractal…
Two dimensional passive scalar turbulence is studied by means of a k-space diffusion model based on a third order differential approximation. This simple description of local nonlinear interactions in Fourier space is shown to present a general expression, in line with previous seminal works, and appears to be suitable for various 2D turbulence problems. Steady state solutions for the spectral energy density of the flow is shown to recover the Kraichnan-Kolmogorov phenomenology of the dual cascade, while various passive scalar spectra, such as Batchelor or Obukhov-Corssin spectra are recovered…
The energy and flux budget (EFB) closure theory for a passive scalar (non-buoyant and non-inertial particles or gaseous admixtures) is developed for stably stratified turbulence. The physical background of the EFB turbulence closures is based on the budget equations for the turbulent kinetic and potential energies and turbulent fluxes of momentum and buoyancy, as well as the turbulent flux of particles. The EFB turbulence closure is designed for stratified geophysical flows from neutral to very stable stratification and it implies that turbulence is maintained by the velocity shear at any stra…
In the study by Sadeghi & Oberlack [JFM 899, A10 (2020)] it is claimed that new scaling laws are derived for the case of passive scalar dynamics under the influence of a constant mean gradient in decaying homogeneous isotropic turbulence. However, these scaling laws are not new and have already been derived and discussed in Bahri (2016). No novel analytical achievements are made by Sadeghi & Oberlack, as the title of their study misleadingly wants to suggest. In fact, the already established self-similar scaling laws obtained by Bahri through simple dimensional analysis are already more genera…
An extended version of the resolvent formulation is used to evaluate the use of anisotropic porous materials as passive flow control devices for turbulent channel flow. The effect of these porous substrates is introduced into the governing equations via a generalized version of Darcy's law. Model predictions show that materials with high streamwise permeability and low wall-normal permeability ($ϕ_{xy} = k_{xx}/k_{yy}\gg1$) can suppress resolvent modes resembling the energetic near-wall cycle. Based on these predictions, two anisotropic porous substrates with $ϕ_{xy} > 1$ and $ϕ_{xy} < 1$ were…
In 1959, Batchelor predicted that the stationary statistics of passive scalars advected in fluids with small diffusivity $κ$ should display a $|k|^{-1}$ power spectrum along an inertial range contained in the viscous-convective range of the fluid model. This prediction has been extensively tested, both experimentally and numerically, and is a core prediction of passive scalar turbulence. In this article we provide a rigorous proof of a version of Batchelor's prediction in the $κ\to 0$ limit when the scalar is subjected to a spatially-smooth, white-in-time stochastic source and is advected by t…

Filtering the passive scalar transport equation in the large-eddy simulation (LES) of turbulent transport gives rise to the closure term corresponding to the unresolved scalar flux. Understanding and respecting the statistical features of subgrid-scale (SGS) flux is a crucial point in robustness and predictability of the LES. In this work, we investigate the intrinsic nonlocal behavior of the SGS passive scalar flux through studying its two-point statistics obtained from the filtered direct numerical simulation (DNS) data for passive scalar transport in homogeneous isotropic turbulence (HIT). …
