Extreme events play a crucial role in fluid turbulence. Inspired by methods from field theory, these extreme events, their evolution and probability can be computed with help of the instanton formalism as minimizers of a suitable action functional. Due to the high number of degrees of freedom in multi-dimensional fluid flows, traditional global minimization techniques quickly become prohibitive in their memory requirements. We outline a novel method for finding the minimizing trajectory in a wide class of problems that typically occurs in turbulence setups, where the underlying dynamical system is a non-gradient, non-linear partial differential equation, and the forcing is restricted to a limited length scale. We demonstrate the efficiency of the algorithm in terms of performance and memory by computing high resolution instanton field configurations corresponding to viscous shocks for 1D and 2D compressible flows.
Processes leading to anomalous fluctuations in turbulent flows, referred to as intermittency, are still challenging. We consider cascade trajectories through scales as realizations of a stochastic Langevin process for which multiplicative noise is an intrinsic feature of the turbulent state. The trajectories are conditioned on their entropy exchange. Such selected trajectories concentrate around an optimal path, called instanton, which is the minimum of an effective action. The action is derived from the Langevin equation, estimated from measured data. In particular instantons with negative en…
We study, by means of extensive direct numerical simulations, the turbulent flow produced by a two-dimensional cellular forcing in a cubic box with periodic boundary conditions. In spite of the strong anisotropy of the forcing, we find that turbulence recovers almost complete isotropy at small scales. Nonetheless, the signature of the forcing remains in the mean flow (averaged over time and over the homogeneous direction) and this allows to introduce a friction factor, whose dependence on the Reynolds number is investigated. We further find that the flow is characterized by large temporal fluc…
Reynolds-dependence of turbulent skin-friction drag reduction induced by spanwise forcing
We study the three-dimensional turbulent Kolmogorov flow, i.e. the Navier-Stokes equations forced by a low-single-wave-number sinusoidal force in a periodic domain, by means of direct numerical simulations. This classical model system is a realization of anisotropic and non-homogeneous hydrodynamic turbulence. Boussinesq's eddy viscosity linear relation is checked and found to be approximately valid over half of the system volume. A more general nonlinear quadratic Reynolds stress development is proposed and its parameters estimated at varying the Taylor scale-based Reynolds number in the flow…
We employ a resolvent-based methodology to estimate velocity and pressure fluctuations within turbulent channel flows at friction Reynolds numbers of approximately 180, 550 and 1000 using measurements of shear stress and pressure at the walls, taken from direct numerical simulation (DNS) databases. Martini et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 900, 2021, A2) showed that the resolvent-based estimator is optimal when the true space-time forcing statistics are utilized, thus providing an upper bound for the accuracy of any linear estimator. We use this framework to determine the flow structures that can b…
This paper presents a study on wave cancellation in forced jets. Building on recent work on real-time control of forced turbulent jets [1,2], we here assess the effect of jet upstream conditions and nonlinearity on wave-cancellation performance. The experiments are performed in jets with laminar and turbulent boundary layers inside the nozzle. An open-loop campaign is first conducted, in which the goal is to analyse the jet response to stochastic forcing with variable bandwidth. The upstream conditions of the jet are found to have a strong influence on the jet response. For narrow forcing band…
The decomposition of hydrodynamic and acoustic components of cavity flows can aid the understanding of the flow-acoustic interaction, which produces a variety of adverse effects in applications. We apply the approach of combining the resolvent analysis and Doak's momentum potential theory to examine the input-output flow-acoustic characteristics of compressible flow over an open cavity at Re=10,000. The methodology can decompose hydrodynamic and acoustic components from an input-output framework. We further localize the forcing at the leading-edge and front wall of the cavity and filter with a…
Recent simulations indicate that streamwise-preferential porous materials have the potential to reduce drag in wall-bounded turbulent flows(Gomez-de-Segura & Garcia-Mayoral 2019). This paper extends the resolvent formulation to study the effect of such anisotropic permeable substrates on turbulent channel flow. Under the resolvent formulation, the Fourier-transformed Navier-Stokes equations are interpreted as a linear forcing-response system. The nonlinear terms are considered the endogenous forcing in the system that gives rise to a velocity and pressure response. A gain-based decomposition o…
We investigate the influence of rotation on the onset and saturation of the Faraday instability in a vertically oscillating two-layer miscible fluid using a theoretical model and direct numerical simulations (DNS). Our analytical approach utilizes the Floquet analysis to solve a set of the Mathieu equations obtained from the linear stability analysis. The solution of the Mathieu equations comprises stable and harmonic, and sub-harmonic unstable regions in a three-dimensional stability diagram. We find that the Coriolis force stabilizes the flow and delays the onset of the sub-harmonic instabil…
The advection and mixing of a scalar quantity by fluid flow is an important problem in engineering and natural sciences. If the fluid is turbulent, the statistics of the passive scalar exhibit complex behavior. This paper is concerned with two Lagrangian scalar turbulence models based on the recent fluid deformation model that can be shown to reproduce the statistics of passive scalar turbulence for a range of Reynolds numbers. For these models, we demonstrate how events of extreme passive scalar gradients can be recovered by computing the instanton, i.e., the saddle-point configuration of the…
Recent numerical explorations of extremely intense circulation fluctuations at high Reynolds number flows have brought to light novel aspects of turbulent intermittency. Vortex gas modeling ideas, introduced alongside such developments, have led to accurate descriptions of the core and the intermediate tails of circulation probability distribution functions (cPDFs), as well as the scaling exponents associated to statistical moments of circulation. We extend the predictive reach of the vortex gas picture of turbulence, by emphasizing that multifractality breaking, one of its salient phenomenolo…
