Tracking the 6D pose of objects in video sequences is important for robot manipulation. Most prior efforts, however, often assume that the target object's CAD model, at least at a category-level, is available for offline training or during online template matching. This work proposes BundleTrack, a general framework for 6D pose tracking of novel objects, which does not depend upon 3D models, either at the instance or category-level. It leverages the complementary attributes of recent advances in deep learning for segmentation and robust feature extraction, as well as memory-augmented pose graph optimization for spatiotemporal consistency. This enables long-term, low-drift tracking under various challenging scenarios, including significant occlusions and object motions. Comprehensive experiments given two public benchmarks demonstrate that the proposed approach significantly outperforms state-of-art, category-level 6D tracking or dynamic SLAM methods. When compared against state-of-art methods that rely on an object instance CAD model, comparable performance is achieved, despite the proposed method's reduced information requirements. An efficient implementation in CUDA provides a real-time performance of 10Hz for the entire framework. Code is available at: https://github.com/wenbowen123/BundleTrack

This article presents a semantic tracker which simultaneously tracks a single target and recognises its category. In general, it is hard to design a tracking model suitable for all object categories, e.g., a rigid tracker for a car is not suitable for a deformable gymnast. Category-based trackers usually achieve superior tracking performance for the objects of that specific category, but have difficulties being generalised. Therefore, we propose a novel unified robust tracking framework which explicitly encodes both generic features and category-based features. The tracker consists of a shared…
Automatically detecting, labeling, and tracking objects in videos depends first and foremost on accurate category-level object detectors. These might, however, not always be available in practice, as acquiring high-quality large scale labeled training datasets is either too costly or impractical for all possible real-world application scenarios. A scalable solution consists in re-using object detectors pre-trained on generic datasets. This work is the first to investigate the problem of on-line domain adaptation of object detectors for causal multi-object tracking (MOT). We propose to alleviat…

The most common paradigm for vision-based multi-object tracking is tracking-by-detection, due to the availability of reliable detectors for several important object categories such as cars and pedestrians. However, future mobile systems will need a capability to cope with rich human-made environments, in which obtaining detectors for every possible object category would be infeasible. In this paper, we propose a model-free multi-object tracking approach that uses a category-agnostic image segmentation method to track objects. We present an efficient segmentation mask-based tracker which associ…

Tracking-by-detection has become an attractive tracking technique, which treats tracking as a category detection problem. However, the task in tracking is to search for a specific object, rather than an object category as in detection. In this paper, we propose a novel tracking framework based on exemplar detector rather than category detector. The proposed tracker is an ensemble of exemplar-based linear discriminant analysis (ELDA) detectors. Each detector is quite specific and discriminative, because it is trained by a single object instance and massive negatives. To improve its adaptivity, …

We propose a single-stage, category-level 6-DoF pose estimation algorithm that simultaneously detects and tracks instances of objects within a known category. Our method takes as input the previous and current frame from a monocular RGB video, as well as predictions from the previous frame, to predict the bounding cuboid and 6-DoF pose (up to scale). Internally, a deep network predicts distributions over object keypoints (vertices of the bounding cuboid) in image coordinates, after which a novel probabilistic filtering process integrates across estimates before computing the final pose using P…

Robots deployed in human-centric environments may need to manipulate a diverse range of articulated objects, such as doors, dishwashers, and cabinets. Articulated objects often come with unexpected articulation mechanisms that are inconsistent with categorical priors: for example, a drawer might rotate about a hinge joint instead of sliding open. We propose a category-independent framework for predicting the articulation models of unknown objects from sequences of RGB-D images. The prediction is performed by a two-step process: first, a visual perception module tracks object part poses from ra…

In this work, we tackle the problem of category-level online pose tracking of objects from point cloud sequences. For the first time, we propose a unified framework that can handle 9DoF pose tracking for novel rigid object instances as well as per-part pose tracking for articulated objects from known categories. Here the 9DoF pose, comprising 6D pose and 3D size, is equivalent to a 3D amodal bounding box representation with free 6D pose. Given the depth point cloud at the current frame and the estimated pose from the last frame, our novel end-to-end pipeline learns to accurately update the pos…
This paper revisits recognition of natural image pleasantness by employing deep convolutional neural networks and affordable eye trackers. There exist several approaches to recognize image pleasantness: (1) computer vision, and (2) psychophysical signals. For natural images, computer vision approaches have not been as successful as for abstract paintings and is lagging behind the psychophysical signals like eye movements. Despite better results, the scalability of eye movements is adversely affected by the sensor cost. While the introduction of affordable sensors have helped the scalability is…
Most modern Multi-Object Tracking (MOT) systems typically apply REID-based paradigm to hold a balance between computational efficiency and performance. In the past few years, numerous attempts have been made to perfect the systems. Although they presented favorable performance, they were constrained to track specified category. Drawing on the ideas of few shot method, we pioneered a new multi-target tracking system, named MOTS, which is based on metrics but not limited to track specific category. It contains two stages in series: In the first stage, we design the self-Adaptive-matching module …
We present 6-PACK, a deep learning approach to category-level 6D object pose tracking on RGB-D data. Our method tracks in real-time novel object instances of known object categories such as bowls, laptops, and mugs. 6-PACK learns to compactly represent an object by a handful of 3D keypoints, based on which the interframe motion of an object instance can be estimated through keypoint matching. These keypoints are learned end-to-end without manual supervision in order to be most effective for tracking. Our experiments show that our method substantially outperforms existing methods on the NOCS ca…
Object tracking can be formulated as "finding the right object in a video". We observe that recent approaches for class-agnostic tracking tend to focus on the "finding" part, but largely overlook the "object" part of the task, essentially doing a template matching over a frame in a sliding-window. In contrast, class-specific trackers heavily rely on object priors in the form of category-specific object detectors. In this work, we re-purpose category-specific appearance models into a generic objectness prior. Our approach converts a category-specific object detector into a category-agnostic, ob…
Promising results have been achieved recently in category-level manipulation that generalizes across object instances. Nevertheless, it often requires expensive real-world data collection and manual specification of semantic keypoints for each object category and task. Additionally, coarse keypoint predictions and ignoring intermediate action sequences hinder adoption in complex manipulation tasks beyond pick-and-place. This work proposes a novel, category-level manipulation framework that leverages an object-centric, category-level representation and model-free 6 DoF motion tracking. The cano…

3D Multi-object tracking (MOT) ensures consistency during continuous dynamic detection, conducive to subsequent motion planning and navigation tasks in autonomous driving. However, camera-based methods suffer in the case of occlusions and it can be challenging to accurately track the irregular motion of objects for LiDAR-based methods. Some fusion methods work well but do not consider the untrustworthy issue of appearance features under occlusion. At the same time, the false detection problem also significantly affects tracking. As such, we propose a novel camera-LiDAR fusion 3D MOT framework …

We present the first real-time system capable of tracking and reconstructing, individually, every visible object in a given scene, without any form of prior on the rigidness of the objects, texture existence, or object category. In contrast with previous methods such as Co-Fusion and MaskFusion that first segment the scene into individual objects and then process each object independently, the proposed method dynamically segments the non-rigid scene as part of the tracking and reconstruction process. When new measurements indicate topology change, reconstructed models are updated in real-time …

This paper proposes a category-level 6D object pose and shape estimation approach iCaps, which allows tracking 6D poses of unseen objects in a category and estimating their 3D shapes. We develop a category-level auto-encoder network using depth images as input, where feature embeddings from the auto-encoder encode poses of objects in a category. The auto-encoder can be used in a particle filter framework to estimate and track 6D poses of objects in a category. By exploiting an implicit shape representation based on signed distance functions, we build a LatentNet to estimate a latent representa…

Visual object tracking is among the hardest problems in computer vision, as trackers have to deal with many challenging circumstances such as illumination changes, fast motion, occlusion, among others. A tracker is assessed to be good or not based on its performance on the recent tracking datasets, e.g., VOT2019, and LaSOT. We argue that while the recent datasets contain large sets of annotated videos that to some extent provide a large bandwidth for training data, the hard scenarios such as occlusion and in-plane rotation are still underrepresented. For trackers to be brought closer to the re…

Deep learning has recently started being applied to visual tracking of generic objects in video streams. For the purposes of robotics applications, it is very important for a target tracker to recover its track if it is lost due to heavy or prolonged occlusions or motion blur of the target. We present a real-time approach which fuses a generic target tracker and object detection module with a target re-identification module. Our work focuses on improving the performance of Convolutional Recurrent Neural Network-based object trackers in cases where the object of interest belongs to the category…
Current multi-category Multiple Object Tracking (MOT) metrics use class labels to group tracking results for per-class evaluation. Similarly, MOT methods typically only associate objects with the same class predictions. These two prevalent strategies in MOT implicitly assume that the classification performance is near-perfect. However, this is far from the case in recent large-scale MOT datasets, which contain large numbers of classes with many rare or semantically similar categories. Therefore, the resulting inaccurate classification leads to sub-optimal tracking and inadequate benchmarking o…

While category-level 9DoF object pose estimation has emerged recently, previous correspondence-based or direct regression methods are both limited in accuracy due to the huge intra-category variances in object shape and color, etc. Orthogonal to them, this work presents a category-level object pose and size refiner CATRE, which is able to iteratively enhance pose estimate from point clouds to produce accurate results. Given an initial pose estimate, CATRE predicts a relative transformation between the initial pose and ground truth by means of aligning the partially observed point cloud and an …
3D multi-object tracking is an important component in robotic perception systems such as self-driving vehicles. Recent work follows a tracking-by-detection pipeline, which aims to match past tracklets with detections in the current frame. To avoid matching with false positive detections, prior work filters out detections with low confidence scores via a threshold. However, finding a proper threshold is non-trivial, which requires extensive manual search via ablation study. Also, this threshold is sensitive to many factors such as target object category so we need to re-search the threshold if …

As a basic component of SE(3)-equivariant deep feature learning, steerable convolution has recently demonstrated its advantages for 3D semantic analysis. The advantages are, however, brought by expensive computations on dense, volumetric data, which prevent its practical use for efficient processing of 3D data that are inherently sparse. In this paper, we propose a novel design of Sparse Steerable Convolution (SS-Conv) to address the shortcoming; SS-Conv greatly accelerates steerable convolution with sparse tensors, while strictly preserving the property of SE(3)-equivariance. Based on SS-Conv…

Visual object tracking is a fundamental task in the field of computer vision. Recently, Siamese trackers have achieved state-of-the-art performance on recent benchmarks. However, Siamese trackers do not fully utilize semantic and objectness information from pre-trained networks that have been trained on the image classification task. Furthermore, the pre-trained Siamese architecture is sparsely activated by the category label which leads to unnecessary calculations and overfitting. In this paper, we propose to learn a Domain-Aware, that is fully utilizing semantic and objectness information wh…

This study follows many classical approaches to multi-object tracking (MOT) that model the problem using dynamic graphical data structures, and adapts this formulation to make it amenable to modern neural networks. Our main contributions in this work are the creation of a framework based on dynamic undirected graphs that represent the data association problem over multiple timesteps, and a message passing graph neural network (MPNN) that operates on these graphs to produce the desired likelihood for every association therein. We also provide solutions and propositions for the computational pro…
We present an approach to semi-supervised video object segmentation, in the context of the DAVIS 2017 challenge. Our approach combines category-based object detection, category-independent object appearance segmentation and temporal object tracking. In order to capture the specific object appearance independent of its category, for each video we train a fully convolutional network using augmentations of the given annotated frame. We r…

During the last years, deep learning trackers achieved stimulating results while bringing interesting ideas to solve the tracking problem. This progress is mainly due to the use of learned deep features obtained by training deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) on large image databases. But since CNNs were originally developed for image classification, appearance modeling provided by their deep layers might be not enough discriminative for the tracking task. In fact, such features represent high-level information, that is more related to object category than to a specific instance of the ob…
