We employ the numerical and analytical methods to study the effects of the hyperscaling violation on the ground and excited states of holographic superconductors for $d=2,~z=2$. For both the holographic s-wave and p-wave models with the hyperscaling violation, we observe that the excited state has a lower critical temperature than the corresponding ground state, which is similar to the relativistic case, and the difference of the dimensionless critical chemical potential between the consecutive states decreases as the hyperscaling violation increases. Interestingly, as we amplify the hyperscaling violation in the s-wave model, the critical temperature of the ground state first decreases and then increases, but that of the excited states always decreases. In the p-wave model, regardless of the ground state or the excited states, the critical temperature always decreases with increasing the hyperscaling violation. In addition, we find that the hyperscaling violation affects the conductivity $σ$ which has $n$ peaks for the $n$-th excited state, and changes the relation in the gap frequency for the excited states in both s-wave and p-wave models.
We investigate the effect of the hyperscaling violation on the holographic superconductors. In the s-wave model, we find that the critical temperature decreases first and then increases as the hyperscaling violation increases, and the mass of the scalar field will not modify the value of the hyperscaling violation which gives the minimum critical temperature. We analytically confirm the numerical results by using the Sturm-Liouville method with the higher order trial function and improve the previous findings in J. High Energy Phys. {\bf 09}, 048 (2013). However, different from the s-wave case…
We re-investigate the holographic superconductor in hyperscaling violation geometry by considering the coupling between the probed Maxwell field and the background dilaton. We find that the phenomenon of superconductivity still exists, but with properties affected by such a coupling. The critical temperature decreases as the hyperscaling violation exponent is increased. The influence of the dynamical exponent on the critical temperature becomes complicated which depends on the mass of the probed scalar field and the hyperscaling violation exponent. The results of the frequency gap show a large…
In this paper we investigate the ratio of shear viscosity to entropy density, $η/s$, in hyperscaling violating geometry with lattice structure. We show that the scaling relation with hyperscaling violation gives a strong constraint to the mass of graviton and usually leads to a power law of temperature, $η/s\sim T^κ$. We find the exponent $κ$ can be greater than two such that the new bound for viscosity raised in arXiv:1601.02757 is violated. Our above observation is testified by constructing specific solutions with UV completion in various holographic models. Finally, we compare the boundedne…
We show that analytical continuation maps scalar solitonic solutions of Einstein-scalar gravity, interpolating between an hyperscaling violating and an Anti de Sitter (AdS) region, in flat FLRW cosmological solutions sourced by a scalar field. We generate in this way exact FLRW solutions that can be used to model cosmological evolution driven by dark energy (a quintessence field) and usual matter. In absence of matter, the flow from the hyperscaling violating regime to the conformal AdS fixed point in holographic models corresponds to cosmological evolution from power-law expansion at early co…
We investigate holographic superconductors in asympototically geometries with hyperscaling violation. The mass of the scalar field decouples from the UV dimension of the dual scalar operator and can be chosen as negative as we want, without disturbing the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound. We first numerically find that the scalar condenses below a critical temperature and a gap opens in the real part of the conductivity, indicating the onset of superconductivity. We further analytically explore the effects of the hyperscaling violation on the superconducting transition temperature. We find that th…
We examine the holographic entanglement entropy in hyperscaling violating backgrounds. Precisely in such theories by semi-analytic computation, we use holographic methods to derive the universal terms of entanglement entropy in various dimensions. We also find such terms when the bulk action includes higher-order curvature terms. We make further comments on the mutual information in hyperscaling violating backgrounds with higher curvature interactions. We explore the sign of tripartite information which results in a monogamy property on mutual information. It is shown that for various hypersca…
We study the divergent terms and the finite term in the expansion of the holographic entanglement entropy as the ultraviolet cutoff vanishes for smooth spatial regions having arbitrary shape, when the gravitational background is a four dimensional asymptotically Lifshitz spacetime with hyperscaling violation, in a certain range of the hyperscaling parameter. Both static and time dependent backgrounds are considered. For the coefficients of the divergent terms and for the finite term, analytic expressions valid for any smooth entangling curve are obtained. The analytic results for the finite te…
A Vaidya type geometry describing gravitation collapse in asymptotically Lifshitz spacetime with hyperscaling violation provides a simple holographic model for thermalization near a quantum critical point with non-trivial dynamic and hyperscaling violation exponents. The allowed parameter regions are constrained by requiring that the matter energy momentum tensor satisfies the null energy condition. We present a combination of analytic and numerical results on the time evolution of holographic entanglement entropy in such backgrounds for different shaped boundary regions and study various scal…
We consider a holographic fermionic system in which the fermions are interacting with a U(1) gauge field in the presence of a dilaton field in a gravity bulk of a charged black hole with hyperscaling violation. Using both analytical and numerical methods, we investigate the properties of the infrared and ultaviolet Green's functions of the holographic fermionic system. Studying the spectral functions of the system, we find that as the hyperscaling violation exponent is varied, the fermionic system possesses Fermi, non-Fermi, marginal-Fermi and log-oscillating liquid phases. Various liquid phas…
We present a semi-analytic method for constructing holographic black holes that interpolate from anti-de Sitter space to hyperscaling-violating geometries. These are holographic duals of conformal field theories in the presence of an applied chemical potential, $μ$, at a non-zero temperature, $T$, and allow us to describe the crossover from `strange metal' physics at $T \ll μ$, to conformal physics at $T \gg μ$. Our holographic technique adds an extra gauge field and exploits structure of the Einstein-Maxwell system to manifestly find 1-parameter families of solutions of the Einstein-matter sy…
We investigate a dynamically generated Mott gap from holographic fermions in asymptotically geometries with hyperscaling violation by employing a bulk dipole coupling for the fermion field. We find that when the coupling strength increases the spectral function first transfers to the negative frequency region but soon redistributes to the positive region. A stable gap and two bands emerges for all momentum when the coupling strength beyonds a critical value. Generally, The upper band on the positive frequency axis is much sharper than the lower band on the negative side. When the diploe coupli…
We propose a formalism for counting the microstates of a class of three-dimensional black holes which are not asymptotically AdS. The formalism rests on the invariance of a dual field theory under a generalized modular transformation and is extended to Rindler horizons by a singular limit. We also obtain logarithmic corrections.
In this note we consider a relativistic heavy quark which moves in the quark-gluon plasmas. By using the holographic methods, we analyze the Langevin diffusion process of this relativistic heavy quark. This heavy quark is described by a trailing string attached to a flavor brane and moving at constant velocity. The fluctuations of this string are related to the thermal correlators and the correlation functions are precisely the kinds of objects that we compute in the gravity dual picture. We obtain the action of the trailing string in hyperscaling violation backgrounds and we then find the equ…
In this paper, we holographically quantify the entanglement and complexity for mixed states by following the prescription of purification. The bulk theory we consider in this work is a hyperscaling violating solution, characterized by two parameters, hyperscaling violating exponent $θ$ and dynamical exponent $z$. This geometry is dual to a non-relativistic strongly coupled theory with hidden Fermi surfaces. We first compute the holographic analogy of entanglement of purification (EoP), denoted as the minimal area of the entanglement wedge cross section and observe the effects of $z$ and $θ$. T…
In this short note we use holographic methods to study the response of quantum critical points with hyperscaling violation to a disturbance caused by a massive charged particle. We give analytical expressions for the two-point functions of the fluctuations of the massive probe as a function of arbitrary (allowed) values of the hyperscaling violation exponent θ and the dynamical exponent z. We point out the existence of markedly different behaviors of the two-point functions in the parameter space of θ and z at late times. In particular, as expected, the late-time dynamics of the probe becomes …
In this work, we consider a class of hyperscaling violating Lifshitz-like black branes with metric scaling components $z=2$ and $θ=-1$ whose corresponding holographic model can be treated as a non-relativistic fluid exhibiting Lifshitz-type symmetry. Having performed analytical calculations via the Klein-Gordon equation and the linear response theory, the experimental realizations of the concerned model, namely the transport coefficients, are found to behave as $η\propto T^{3/2}$, $σ_{DC} \propto T^{3/2}$, and $ρ_{DC} \propto T^{-3/2}$. The associated metric scaling exponents from the bulk the…
We investigate an Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton-Axion holographic model and obtain two branches of a charged black hole solution with a dynamic exponent and a hyperscaling violation factor when a magnetic field presents. The magnetothermoelectric DC conductivities are then calculated in terms of horizon data by means of holographic principle. We find that linear temperature dependence resistivity and quadratic temperature dependence inverse Hall angle can be achieved in our model. The well-known anomalous temperature scaling of the Nernst signal and the Seebeck coefficient of cuprate strange metals…
We present an overview of the construction of the general holographic dictionary for asymptotically locally Lifshitz and hyperscaling violating Lifshitz backgrounds with arbitrary dynamical exponents $z$ and $θ$, compatible with the null energy condition, which was recently developed in [1,2]. A concrete definition of asymptotically locally Lifshitz and hyperscaling violating Lifshitz backgrounds is provided in the context of a generic bottom-up Einstein-Proca-Dilaton theory, and a systematic procedure for solving the radial Hamilton-Jacobi equation via a covariant expansion in eigenfunctions …
We study the effects of including higher-curvature corrections to the Einstein gravity bulk action on the holographic entanglement entropy (HEE) expression for geometries with hyperscaling violation (hvLf). For $θ< 0$ we show that one single new divergence arises for general curvature-squared gravities, which allows us to conjecture the general expression of HEE for any higher-order gravity action. For $0<θ<d$, we assume the hvLf geometry to arise above some intermediate scale $r_F$, becoming AdS in the UV and perform a similar analysis for $R^n$ gravities. For negative values of $θ$ we find t…
In this paper, we are interested in exploring the existence of stealth configurations on anisotropic backgrounds playing a prominent role in the non-relativistic version of the gauge/gravity correspondence. By stealth configuration, we mean a nontrivial scalar field nonminimally coupled to gravity whose energy-momentum tensor evaluated on the anisotropic background vanishes identically. In the case of a Lifshitz spacetime with a nontrivial dynamical exponent z, we spotlight the role played by the anisotropy to establish the holographic character of the stealth configurations, i.e. the scalar f…
We study the low energy and low momentum behavior of current correlators in a class of holographic zero-temperature finite density critical theories which do not respect the hyperscaling relation. The dual holographic description is assumed to be given by probe D-branes embedded in background geometries characterized by a dynamical critical exponent $z$ and a hyperscaling violation exponent $θ$. We show that a subset of these theories with $1\leq z<2(1-θ/d)$ exhibit a stable linearly-dispersing mode in their low energy spectrum of excitations. This mode, which appears as a pole in the retarded…
We study in detail a variety of gravitational toy models for hyperscaling-violating Lifshitz (hvLif) space-times. These space-times have been recently explored as holographic dual models for condensed matter systems. We start by considering a model of gravity coupled to a massive vector field and a dilaton with a potential. This model supports the full class of hvLif space-times and special attention is given to the particular values of the scaling exponents appearing in certain non-Fermi liquids. We study linearized perturbations in this model, and consider probe fields whose interactions mim…
We investigate systematic classifications of low energy and lower dimensional effective holographic theories with Lifshitz and Schrödinger scaling symmetries only using metrics in terms of hyperscaling violation ($θ$) and dynamical ($z$) exponents. Their consistent parameter spaces are constrained by null energy and positive specific heat conditions, whose validity is explicitly checked against a previously known result. From dimensional reductions of many microscopic string solutions, we observe the classifications are tied with the number of scales in the original microscopic theories. Confo…
We reconsider the holographic model featuring a superconducting dome on the temperature-doping phase diagram with a modified view on the role of the two charges. The first type charge with density $ρ_{A}$ make the Mott insulator, and the second one with $ρ_{B}$ is the extra charge by doping, so that the complex scalar describing the cooper pair condensation couples only with the second charge. We point out that the key role in creating the dome is played by the three point interaction $-c χ^{2} F_{μν}G^{μν}$. The $Tc$ increases with their coupling. We also consider the effect of the quantum cr…
We compute the direct current resistivity of a scale-invariant, $d$-dimensional strange metal with dynamic critical exponent $z$ and hyperscaling-violating exponent $θ$, weakly perturbed by a scalar operator coupled to random-field disorder that locally breaks a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry. Independent calculations via Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton holography and memory matrix methods lead to the same results. We show that random field disorder has a strong effect on resistivity: charge carriers in the infrared are easily depleted, as the relaxation time for momentum is surprisingly small. In the cours…
We study solutions to Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton gravity with a constant magnetic flux which describe, in the holographic AdS/CFT framework, field theories characterized by a dynamical critical exponent and a hyperscaling violation exponent. Such solutions are known to be IR-incomplete due to the presence of a running dilaton, which drives the theory towards strong coupling in the IR, where quantum corrections become important. After introducing generic corrections, in this note we examine the conditions for the emergence of an AdS_2 x R^2 region close to the horizon, which provides an IR-comple…
We compute the bulk viscosity in holographic models dual to theories with Lifshitz scaling and/or hyperscaling violation, using a generalization of the bulk viscosity formula derived in arXiv:1103.1657 from the null focusing equation. We find that only a class of models with massive vector fields are truly Lifshitz scale invariant, and have a vanishing bulk viscosity. For other holographic models with scalars and/or massless vector fields we find a universal formula in terms of the dynamical exponent and the hyperscaling violation exponent.
We investigate the holographic dc conductivity of (2+1) dimensional systems while considering hyperscaling violating geometry in the bulk. We consider Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton system with two gauge fields and Liouville type potential for dilaton. We also consider axionic fields in the bulk in order to introduce momentum relaxation in the system. We apply an external magnetic field to study the response of the system and obtain analytic expressions for dc conductivity, Hall angle and (thermo)electric conductivity.
We explore string/M-theory constructions of holographic theories with Lifshitz scaling exponent $z$ and hyperscaling violation exponent $θ$, finding a range of $z,θ$-values. Some of these arise as effective metrics from dimensional reduction of certain kinds of null deformations of $AdS$ spacetimes appearing in the near horizon geometries of extremal D3-, M2- and M5-brane theories. The $AdS_5$ solution in particular gives rise to $θ=1$ in $d=2$ (boundary) space dimensions. Other solutions arise as the IIA D2- and D4-brane solutions with appropriate null deformations, and we discuss the phase s…
The imaginary potential and entropic force are two important different mechanisms to characterize the dissociation of heavy quarkonia. In this paper, we calculate these two quantities in strongly coupled theories with anisotropic Lifshitz scaling and hyperscaling violation exponent using holographic methods. We study how the results are affected by the hyperscaling violation parameter θ and the dynamical exponent z at finite temperature and chemical potential. Also, we investigate the effect of the chemical potential on these quantities. As a result, we find that both mechanisms show the same …
We study the holographic complexity of Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton gravity using the recently proposed "complexity = volume" and "complexity = action" dualities. The model we consider has a ground state that is represented in the bulk via a so-called hyperscaling violating geometry. We calculate the action growth of the Wheeler-DeWitt patch of the corresponding black hole solution at non-zero temperature and find that, in the presence of violations of hyperscaling, there is a parametric enhancement of the action growth rate. We partially match this behavior to simple tensor network models which c…
We study certain features of strongly coupled theories with hyperscaling violation by making use of their gravitational duals. We will consider models with an anisotropic scaling in time or in one of spatial directions. In particular for the case where the anisotropic scaling is along a spatial direction we will compute the holographic entanglement entropy and show that for specific values of the parameters it exhibits a logarithmic violation of the area law. We will also probe the backgrounds by different closed and open strings which in turn can be used to read, for example, effective potent…
We show that many results about holographic conductivities in geometries with hyperscaling violating scaling can be reproduced from simple scaling laws in the dual field theory. We show that the electro-magnetic response of probe branes in these systems require at least one additional scaling parameter Phi beyond the usual dynamical exponent z and hyperscaling violating exponent theta, as also pointed out in earlier work. We show that the scaling exponents can be chosen in such a way that the temperature dependence of DC conductivity and Hall angle in strange metals can be reproduced.
In recent applications of AdS/CFT to condensed matter physics, a metric that transforms covariantly under dilatation has been argued to signal hyperscaling violation in a dual quantum field theory. We contextualize and introduce large, in some cases infinite, families of supergravity solutions with this property, focusing on scale covariant generalizations of AdS and Schrodinger spacetimes. These embeddings rely on various aspects of dimensional reduction and flux compactification of eleven-dimensional supergravity. Our top-down approach can be viewed as a partial holographic classification of…
We analytically compute the thermoelectric conductivities at zero frequency (DC) in the holographic dual of a four dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-Axion-Dilaton theory that admits a class of asymptotically hyperscaling violating Lifshitz backgrounds with a dynamical exponent $z$ and hyperscaling violating parameter $θ$. We show that the heat current in the dual Lifshitz theory involves the energy flux, which is an irrelevant operator for $z>1$. The linearized fluctuations relevant for computing the thermoelectric conductivities turn on a source for this irrelevant operator, leading to several nov…
We holographically investigate the effects of a dipole coupling between a fermion field and a $U(1)$ gauge field on the dual fermionic sector in the charged gravity bulk with hyperscaling violation. We analytically study the features of the ultraviolet and infrared Green's functions of the dual fermionic system and we show that as the dipole coupling and the hyperscaling violation exponent are varied, the fluid possess Fermi, marginal Fermi, non-Fermi liquid phases and also an additional Mott insulating phase. We find that the increase of the hyperscaling violation exponent which effectively r…
Using complexity=action proposal we study the growth rate of holographic complexity for Lifshitz and hyperscaling violating geometries. We will consider both one and two sided black branes in an Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton gravitational theory. We find that in either case Lloyd's bound is violated and the rate of growth of complexity saturates to a value which is greater than twice the mass of the corresponding black brane. This value reduces to the mass of the black brane in the isotropic case. We show that in two sided black brane the saturation happens from above while for one sided black bran…
Entanglement temperature is an interesting quantity which relates the increased amount of entanglement entropy and energy for a weakly excited state in entanglement first-law, it is proportional to the inverse of the size of the entanglement subsystem and only depends on the shape of the entanglement region. We find the explicit formula of entanglement temperature for the general hyperscaling violation backgrounds with a strip-subsystem. We then investigate the entanglement temperature for a round ball-subsystem, we check that the entanglement temperature have a universal form when the hypersc…
We study quasinormal modes of shear gravitational perturbations for hyperscaling violating Lifshitz theories, with Lifshitz and hyperscaling violating exponents $z$ and $θ$. The lowest quasinormal mode frequency yields a shear diffusion constant which is in agreement with that obtained in previous work by other methods. In particular for theories with $z< d_i+2-θ$ where $d_i$ is the boundary spatial dimension, the shear diffusion constant exhibits power-law scaling with temperature, while for $z=d_i+2-θ$, it exhibits logarithmic scaling. We then calculate certain 2-point functions of the dual …
We propose a gravity dual of antiferromagnetic quantum phase transition (QPT) induced by magnetic field and study the critical behavior around the quantum critical point (QCP). It turns out that the boundary critical theory is a strong coupling theory with dynamic exponent $z=2$ and that the hyperscaling law is violated and logarithmic corrections appear near the QCP. Some novel scaling relations are predicated, which can be tested by experiment data in future. We also make some comparison with experimental data on low-dimensional magnets BiCoPO$_5$ and pyrochlores Er$_{2-2x}$Y$_{2x}$Ti$_2$O$_…
We construct cohomogeneity-three, finite temperature stationary black brane solutions dual to a field theory exhibiting checkerboard order. The checkerboards form a backreacted part of the bulk solution, and are obtained numerically from the coupled Einstein-Maxwell-scalar PDE system. They arise spontaneously and without the inclusion of an explicit lattice. The phase exhibits both charge and global U(1)-current modulation, which are periodic in two spatial directions. The current circulates within each checkerboard plaquette. We explore the competition with striped phases, finding first-order…
We analyze various aspects of the recently proposed holographic theories with general dynamical critical exponent z and hyperscaling violation exponent $θ$. We first find the basic constraints on $z, θ$ from the gravity side, and compute the stress-energy tensor expectation values and scalar two-point functions. Massive correlators exhibit a nontrivial exponential behavior at long distances, controlled by $θ$. At short distance, the two-point functions become power-law, with a universal form for $θ> 0$. Next, the calculation of the holographic entanglement entropy reveals the existence of nove…
We consider holographic theories in bulk $(d+1)$-dimensions with Lifshitz and hyperscaling violating exponents $z,θ$ at finite temperature. By studying shear gravitational modes in the near-horizon region given certain self-consistent approximations, we obtain the corresponding shear diffusion constant on an appropriately defined stretched horizon, adapting the analysis of Kovtun, Son and Starinets. For generic exponents with $d-z-θ>-1$, we find that the diffusion constant has power law scaling with the temperature, motivating us to guess a universal relation for the viscosity bound. When the …
In this paper, we generalize the study of the model of holographic superconductor in the excited states to the framework of massive gravity. By taking into account the effect of massive graviton, we numerically present a family of solutions of the holographic superconductor in excited states, and find that the critical temperatures can be higher due to the effect of massive graviton comparing with the superconductor in Einstein gravity. We also investigate the condensates and conductivities in the ground state and the excited states with studying various parameters that determine the framework…
It was shown in Dey and Roy (2012) that the near horizon limit of the 1/4 BPS threshold F-D$p$ (for $0\leq p \leq 5$, $p \neq 4$) bound state solutions of type II string theories give rise to space-time metrics endowed with Lifshitz scaling along with hyperscaling violation. Here we compute the holographic entanglement entropy of this system for all $p \neq 4$ (for $p=4$ the space-time has AdS$_2$ structure). For $p=3,5$, we get the expected area law behavior of the entanglement entropy. For $p=0,1$, the entanglement entropy has new area law violations and has the behavior which is in between …
Based on the Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue problem, we develop a general analytic technique to investigate the excited states of the holographic superconductors. By including more higher order terms in the expansion of the trial function, we observe that the analytic results agree well with the numeric data, which indicates that the Sturm-Liouville method is very powerful to study the holographic superconductors even if we consider the excited states. For both the holographic s-wave and p-wave models, we find that the excited state has a lower critical temperature than the corresponding ground st…
Hyperscaling violating `strange metal' phase of heavy fermion compounds can be described holographically by probe D-branes in the background of a Lifshitz space-time (dynamical exponent $z$ and spatial dimensions $d$) with hyperscaling violation (corresponding exponent $θ$). Without the hyperscaling violation, strange metals are known to exhibit zero sound mode for $z<2$ analogous to the Fermi liquids. In this paper, we study its fate in the presence of hyperscaling violation and find that in this case the zero sound mode exists for $z < 2(1+|θ|/d)$, where the positivity of the specific heat a…
We provide a general algorithm for constructing the holographic dictionary for any asymptotically locally Lifshitz background, with or without hyperscaling violation, and for any values of the dynamical exponents $z$ and $θ$, as well as the vector hyperscaling violating exponent, that are compatible with the null energy condition. The analysis is carried out for a very general bottom up model of gravity coupled to a massive vector field and a dilaton with arbitrary scalar couplings. The solution of the radial Hamilton-Jacobi equation is obtained recursively in the form of a graded expansion in…
