The topological nodal-line semimetals (NLSMs) possess a loop of Dirac nodes in the k space with linear dispersion, different from the point nodes in Dirac/Weyl semimetals. While the quantum transport associated with the topologically nontrivial Dirac fermions has been investigated extensively, features uniquely associated with the extended nodal lines remain to be demonstrated. Here, we investigate the quantum oscillations (QOs) in the nodal-line semimetal ZrSiS, with the electron transport along the c axis, and magnetic field rotating in the ab plane. The extremal orbits identified through the field orientation dependence of the QOs interlock with the nodal line, leading to a nonzero Berry phase. Most importantly, the Berry phase shows a significant dependence on the magnetic field orientation, which we argue to be due to the finite spin-orbit coupling gap. Our results demonstrate the importance of the spin-orbit coupling and the nodal-line dispersion in understanding the quantum transport of NLSMs.
We use a functional renormalization group (fRG) approach to investigate potential interaction-induced instabilities in a two-dimensional model for the Dirac nodal-line materials ZrSiS and ZrSiSe employing model parameters derived from {\it ab initio} calculations. Our results confirm that the excitonic instability recently found in random-phase approximation for ZrSiS is indeed the leading instability. In the simplest modeling, spin- and charge-excitonic states are degenerate. Beyond this, we show that the fRG analysis produces an energy scale for the onset of the instability in good agreement…
Pezzini et al. reported an unconventional mass enhancement in topological nodal line semimetal ZrSiS (Nat. Phys. 14, 178 (2018), whose origin remains puzzling. In this material, strong short-range interactions might induce excitonic particle-hole pairs. Here we study the renormalization of fermion velocities and find that the mass enhancement in ZrSiS can be well understood if we suppose that ZrSiS is close to the quantum critical point between semimetal and excitonic insulator. Near this quantum critical point, the fermion velocities are considerably reduced by excitonic quantum fluctuation, …
Electron correlation effects are studied in ZrSiS using a combination of first-principles and model approaches. We show that basic electronic properties of ZrSiS can be described within a two-dimensional lattice model of two nested square lattices. High degree of electron-hole symmetry characteristic for ZrSiS is one of the key features of this model. Having determined model parameters from first-principles calculations, we then explicitly take electron-electron interactions into account and show that at moderately low temperatures ZrSiS exhibits excitonic instability, leading to the formation…
ZrSiS is the most intensively studied topological nodal-line semimetal candidate, which is proposed to host multiple nodal lines in its bulk electronic structure. However, previous angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) experiments with vacuum ultraviolet lights mainly probed the surface states. Here using bulk-sensitive soft X-ray ARPES, we acquire the bulk electronic states of ZrSiS without any interference from surface states. Our results clearly show two groups of three-dimensional bulk nodal lines located on high-symmetry planes and along high-symmetry lines in the bulk Brillou…
In nodal-line semimetals linearly dispersing states form Dirac loops in the reciprocal space, with high degree of electron-hole symmetry and almost-vanishing density of states near the Fermi level. The result is reduced electronic screening and enhanced correlations between Dirac quasiparticles. Here we investigate the electronic structure of ZrSiSe, by combining time- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy with ab initio density functional theory (DFT) complemented by an extended Hubbard model (DFT +U +V). We show that electronic correlations are reduced on an ultrashort timescale by o…
ZrSiS is one of the strong candidates for realistic nodal-line semimetal. We theoretically investigate the dynamical conductivity in ZrSiS by using a multi-orbital theoretical model based on the first-principles band calculation. We find that the dynamical conductivity in the clean limit is actually not frequency independent unlike the ideal Dirac model, while nearly flat dependence is achieved by introducing the energy broadening possibly induced by the disorder. The results can be applied to other compounds with the similar crystal structure, such as ZrSiSe, ZrSiTe, and HfSiS.
Topological semimetals represent a new class of quantum materials hosting Dirac/Weyl fermions. The essential properties of topological fermions can be revealed by quantum oscillations. Here we present the first systematic de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillation studies on the recently discovered topological Dirac nodal-line semimetal ZrSiS. From the angular dependence of dHvA oscillations, we have revealed the anisotropic Dirac bands in ZrSiS and found surprisingly strong Zeeman splitting at low magnetic fields. The Landé g-factor estimated from the separation of Zeeman splitting peaks is as lar…
The Dirac nodal-line semimetals (DNLS) are new promising materials for technological applications due to its exotic properties, which originate from band structures dispersion and nodal-line behavior. We report a study on effects of several possibilities of strains in ZrSiSe DNLS on band structure dispersion and nodal-line behavior through the means of the density functional theory (DFT) calculations. We found that the Dirac nodal-line of ZrSiSe is robust to all strain with reasonable magnitude. Although, there are significant changes in gap, amplitude, and energy relative to Fermi energy. We …
We demonstrate a unique approach to test the signature of the nodal-line physics by thermodynamic methods. By measuring magnetic susceptibility in ZrSiS we found an intriguing temperature-driven crossover from dia- to paramagnetic behavior. We show that the anomalous behavior represents a real thermodynamic signature of the underlying nodal-line physics through the means o chemical pressure (isovalent substitution of Zr for Hf), quantum oscillations, and theoretical model ng. The anomalous part of the susceptibility is orbital by nature, and it arises due to the vicinity of the Fermi level to …
The discovery of topological semimetal phase in three-dimensional (3D) systems is a new breakthrough in topological material research. Dirac nodal-line semimetal is one of the three topological semimetal phases discovered so far; it is characterized by linear band crossing along a line/loop, contrasted with the linear band crossing at discrete momentum points in 3D Dirac and Weyl semimetals. The study of nodal-line semimetal is still at initial stage; only three material systems have been verified to host nodal line fermions until now, including PbTaSe2, PtSn 4and ZrSiS. In this letter, we rep…
We instigate the angle-dependent magnetoresistance (AMR) of the layered nodal-line Dirac semimetal ZrSiS for the in-plane and out-of-plane current directions. This material has recently revealed an intriguing butterfly-shaped in-plane AMR that is not well understood. Our measurements of the polar out-of-plane AMR show a surprisingly different response with a pronounced cusp-like feature. The maximum of the cusp-like anisotropy is reached when the magnetic field is oriented in the $a$-$b$ plane. Moreover, the AMR for the azimuthal out-of-plane current direction exhibits a very strong four-fold …
The anisotropic optical response of the layered, nodal-line semimetal ZrSiS at ambient and high pressure is investigated by frequency-dependent reflectivity measurements for the polarization along and perpendicular to the layers. The highly anisotropic optical conductivity is in very good agreement with results from density functional theory calculations and confirms the anisotropic character of ZrSiS. Whereas the in-plane optical conductivity shows only modest pressure-induced changes, we found strong effects on the out-of-plane optical conductivity spectrum of ZrSiS, with the appearance of t…
Topological materials provide an exclusive platform to study the dynamics of relativistic particles in table-top experiments and offer the possibility of wide-scale technological applications. ZrSiS is a newly discovered topological nodal-line semimetal and has drawn enormous interests. In this report, we have investigated the lattice dynamics and electron-phonon interaction in single crystalline ZrSiS using Raman spectroscopy. Polarization and angle resolved measurements have been performed and the results have been analyzed using crystal symmetries and theoretically calculated atomic vibrati…
The ultrafast optical response of two nodal-line semimetals, ZrSiS and ZrSiSe, was studied in the near-infrared using transient reflectivity. The two materials exhibit similar responses, characterized by two features, well resolved in time and energy. The first transient feature decays after a few hundred femtoseconds, while the second lasts for nanoseconds. Using Drude-Lorentz fits of the materials' equilibrium reflectance, we show that the fast response is well-represented by a decrease of the Drude plasma frequency, and the second feature by an increase of the Drude scattering rate. This di…
Despite being the most studied nodal line semimetal, a clear understanding of the transient state relaxation dynamics and the underlying mechanism in ZrSiS is lacking. Using time and angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we study the ultrafast relaxation dynamics in ZrSiS and reveal a unique relaxation in the bulk nodal-line state which is well captured by a simple model based on optical and acoustic phonon cooling. We find linear decay processes for both optical and acoustic phonon relaxations with acoustic cooling suppressed at high temperatures. Our results reveal different decay mecha…
We study electron-phonon interaction and related transport properties of nodal-line semimetal ZrSiS using first-principles calculations. We find that ZrSiS is characterized by a weak electron-phonon coupling on the order of 0.1, which is almost energy independent. The main contribution to the electron-phonon coupling originates from long-wavelength optical phonons, causing no significant renormalization of the electron spectral function. At the charge neutrality point, we find that electrons and holes provide a comparable contribution to the scattering rate. The phonon-limited resistivity calc…
Optical properties of nodal-line semimetal ZrSiS are studied using first-principles calculations. Frequency-independent optical conductivity is a fingerprint of the infrared optical response in ZrSiS. We find that this characteristic feature is robust with respect to uniaxial compressive strain of up to 10 GPa, yet with the flat region being narrowed with increasing strain. Upon uniaxial tensile stress of 2 GPa, the Fermi surface undergoes a Lifshitz transition accompanied by a weakening of the interband screening, which reduces the spectral weight of infrared excitations. We also show that th…
Tunable symmetry breaking plays a crucial role for the manipulation of topological phases of quantum matter. Here, through combined high-pressure magneto-transport measurements, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction, we demonstrate a pressure-induced topological phase transition in nodal-line semimetal ZrSiS. Symmetry analysis and first-principles calculations suggest that this pressure-induced topological phase transition may be attributed to weak lattice distortions by non-hydrostatic compression, which breaks some crystal symmetries, such as the mirror and inversion symmetries. This fin…
As emerging topological nodal-line semimetals, the family of ZrSiX (X = O, S, Se, Te) has attracted broad interests in condensed matter physics due to their future applications in spintonics. Here, we apply a scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) to study the structural symmetry and electronic topology of ZrSiSe. The glide mirror symmetry is verified by quantifying the lattice structure of the ZrSe bilayer based on bias selective topographies. The quasiparticle interference analysis is used to identify the band structure of ZrSiSe. The nodal line is experimentally determined at $\sim$ 250 meV ab…
Out-of-equilibrium effects provide an elegant pathway to probing and understanding the underlying physics of topological materials. Creating exotic states of matter using ultrafast optical pulses in particular has shown promise towards controlling electronic band structure properties. Of recent interest is band renormalization in Dirac and Weyl semimetals as it leads to direct physical observables through the enhancement of the effective mass, or, in the shift of resonant energies. Here we provide experimental and theoretical signatures of photo-induced renormalization of the electronic band s…
ZrSiS is a nodal-line semimetal, whose electronic band structure contains a diamond-shaped line of Dirac nodes. We carried out a comparative study on the optical conductivity of ZrSiS and related compounds ZrSiSe, ZrSiTe, ZrGeS, and ZrGeTe by reflectivity measurements over a broad frequency range combined with density functional theory calculations. The optical conductivity exhibits a distinct U shape, ending at a sharp peak at around 10000~cm$^{-1}$ for all studied compounds, except for ZrSiTe. The U shape of the optical conductivity is due to transitions between the linearly dispersing bands…
ZrSiS, an intriguing candidate of topological nodal line semimetals, was discovered to have exotic surface floating two-dimensional (2D) electrons [Phys. Rev. X 7, 041073 (2017)], which are likely to interact with surface phonons. Here, we reveal a prominent Kohn anomaly in a surface phonon branch by mapping out the surface phonon dispersions of ZrSiS using high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy. Theoretical analysis via an electron-phonon coupling (EPC) model attributes the strong renormalization of the surface phonon branch to the interactions with the surface floating 2D electron…
The nodal-line semimetals have attracted immense interest due to the unique electronic structures such as the linear dispersion and the vanishing density of states as the Fermi energy approaching the nodes. Here, we report temperature-dependent transport and scanning tunneling microscope (spectroscopy) (STM[S]) measurements on nodal-line semimetal ZrSiSe.Our experimental results and theoretical analyses consistently demonstrate that the temperature induces Lifshitz transitions at 80 and 106 K in ZrSiSe, which results in the transport anomalies at the same temperatures. More strikingly, we obse…
We present a far-infrared magneto-optical study of the gapped nodal-line semimetal ZrSiS in magnetic fields $B$ up to 7 T. The observed field-dependent features, which represent intra- (cyclotron resonance) and interband transitions, develop as $\sqrt{B}$ in increasing field and can be consistently explained within a simple 2D Dirac band model with a gap of 26 meV and an averaged Fermi velocity of $3\times10^{5}$ m/s. This indicates a rather narrow distribution of these parameters along the in-plane portions of the nodal line in the Brillouin zone. A field-induced feature with an energy positi…
The unconventional magnetoresistance of ZrSiS single crystals is found unsaturated till the magnetic field of 53 T with the butterfly shaped angular dependence. Intense Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations resolve a bulk Dirac cone with a nontrivial Berry phase, where the Fermi surface area is 1.80*10^-3 Å-2 and reaches the quantum limit before 20 T. Angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurement reveals an electronic state with the two-dimensional nature around the X point of Brillouin zone boundary. By integrating the density functional theory calculations, ZrSiS is suggested to be a Dirac …
ZrSiS exhibits a frequency-independent interband conductivity $σ(ω) = \rm{const}(ω) \equiv σ_{\rm{flat}}$ in a broad range from 250 to 2500 cm$^{-1}$ (30 - 300 meV). This makes ZrSiS similar to (quasi)two-dimensional Dirac electron systems, such as graphite and graphene. We assign the flat optical conductivity to the transitions between quasi-two-dimensional Dirac bands near the Fermi level. In contrast to graphene, $σ_{\rm{flat}}$ is not supposed to be universal but related to the length of the nodal line in the reciprocal space, $k_{0}$. When $σ_{\rm{flat}}$ and $k_{0}$ are connected by a si…
The discovery of a topological nodal-line (TNL) semimetal phase in ZrSiS has invigorated the study of other members of this family. Here, we present a comparative electronic structure study of ZrSiX (where X = S, Se, Te) using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and first-principles calculations. Our ARPES studies show that the overall electronic structure of ZrSiX materials comprises of the diamond-shaped Fermi pocket, the nearly elliptical-shaped Fermi pocket, and a small electron pocket encircling the zone center ($Γ$) point, the M point, and the X point of the Brillouin zone,…
3D Dirac semimetals are an emerging class of materials that possess topological electronic states with a Dirac dispersion in their bulk. In nodal-line Dirac semimetals, the conductance and valence bands connect along a closed path in momentum space, leading to the prediction of pseudospin vortex rings and pseudospin skyrmions. Here, we use Fourier transform scanning tunneling spectroscopy (FT-STS) at 4.5 K to resolve quasiparticle interference (QPI) patterns at single defect centers on the surface of the line nodal semimetal zirconium silicon sulfide (ZrSiS). Our QPI measurements show pseudosp…
Dirac semimetals (DSMs) are three dimensional analogue to graphene with symmety enforced bulk Dirac nodes. Among various DSMs, ZrSiS has been attracting more interests recently, due to its three dimensional Dirac nodal line protected by the nonsymmorphic symmetry. It actually belongs to a large family of isostructural compounds with unique quantum phenomenon. Here we present a comprehensive study of the first principle calculation, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements, and scanning tunneling microscope (STM) experiments on ZrGeTe, a member of the ZrSiS family with str…
Dirac nodal line semimetals represent a new state of quantum matters in which the electronic bands touch to form a closed loop with linear dispersion. Here, we report a combined study on ZrSiS by density functional theory calculation, scanning tunneling microscope (STM) and magneto-transport measurements. Our STM measurements reveal the spectroscopic signatures of a diamond-shaped Dirac bulk band and a surface band on two types of cleaved surfaces as well as a spin polarized surface band at ${\barΓ}$ at E~0.6eV on S-surface, consistent with our band calculation. Furthermore, we find the surfac…
Polarization-dependent reflectivity measurements were carried out over a broad frequency range on single-crystalline ZrGeSe and ZrGeS compounds, which are closely related to the prototype nodal-line semimetal ZrSiS. These measurements revealed the strongly anisotropic character of both ZrGeSe and ZrGeS, with a reduced plasma frequency for the out-of-plane direction {\bf E}$\| c$ as compared to the in-plane direction {\bf E}$\| ab$. For {\bf E}$\| ab$ the optical conductivity spectrum consists of two Drude terms followed by a shoulder or plateau-like behavior and a distinct U shape at higher en…
While the discovery of Dirac and Weyl type excitations in electronic systems is a major breakthrough in recent condensed matter physics, finding appropriate materials for fundamental physics and technological applications, is an experimental challenge. In all the reported materials, linear dispersion survives only up to a few hundred meV from the Dirac or Weyl nodes. On the other hand, real materials are subject to uncontrolled doping during preparation and thermal effect near room temperature can hinder the rich physics. In ZrSiS, ARPES measurements have shown an unusually robust linear dispe…
Drumhead surface states that link together loops of nodal lines arise in Dirac nodal-line semimetals as a consequence of the topologically non-trivial band crossings. We used low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and Fourier-transformed scanning tunneling spectroscopy to investigate the quasiparticle interference (QPI) properties of ZrSiTe. Our results show two scattering signals across the drumhead state resolving the energy-momentum relationship through the occupied and unoccupied energy ranges it is predicted to span. Observation of this drumhead state is in contrast to previous stu…
We theoretically investigate the phase of the de Haas - van Alphen oscillations in topological line-node semimetals. In these semimetals the chemical potential of charge carriers can essentially depend on the magnetic field, and this dependence changes the phase of the oscillations as compared to the phase in a three-dimensional metal with a band-contact line. Our results elucidate recent experimental data on the Berry phase for certain electron orbits in ZrSiS, ZrSiTe, and ZrSiSe.
Nodal semimetals are a unique platform to explore topological signatures of the unusual band structure that can manifest by accumulating a nontrivial phase in quantum oscillations. Here we report a study of the de Haasvan Alphen oscillations of the candidate topological nodal line semimetal CaAgAs using torque measurements in magnetic fields up to 45 T. Our results are compared with calculations for a toroidal Fermi surface originating from the nodal ring. We find evidence of a nontrivial Berry phase shift only in one of the oscillatory frequencies. We interpret this as a Berry phase arising f…
The Berry phase and curvature are studied for the Dirac nodal line semimetal of single-component molecular conductor [Pd(dddt)$_2$]. Using two-band model on the basis of a tight-binding model, it is shown that the Berry curvature, $\bm{B}(\bm{k})$, exists along a loop of the nodal line, on which the Berry phase is obtained from surface integral of $\bm{B}(\bm{k})$. The Berry phase, which is called Zak phase, is also calculated from one-dimensional integral of the Berry connection along a line between two equivalent points of boundaries of Brillouin zone. The possible experiment is discussed in…
ZrSiS-type materials represent a large material family with unusual coexistence of topological nonsymmorphic Dirac fermions and nodal-line fermions. As a special group of ZrSiS-family, LnSbTe (Ln = Lanthanide rare earth) compounds provide a unique opportunity to explore new quantum phases due to the intrinsic magnetism induced by Ln. Here we report the single crystal growth and characterization of NdSbTe, a previously unexplored LnSbTe compound. NdSbTe has an antiferromagnetic ground state with field-driven metamagnetic transitions similar to other known LnSbTe, but exhibits distinct enhanced …
The advent of nodal-line semi-metals, i.e. systems in which the conduction and valence bands cross each other along a closed trajectory (line or loop) inside the Brillouin zone, has opened up a new arena for the exploration of topological condensed matter in which, due to a vanishing density of states near the Fermi level, electron correlation effects may also play an important role. In spite of this conceptual richness however, material realization of nodal-line (loop) fermions is rare, with PbTaSe2, ZrSiS and PtSn4 the only promising known candidates. Here we report the synthesis and physica…
Topological nodal line semimetals, a novel quantum state of materials, possess topologically nontrivial valence and conduction bands that touch at a line near the Fermi level. The exotic band structure can lead to various novel properties, such as long-range Coulomb interaction and flat Landau levels. Recently, topological nodal lines have been observed in several bulk materials, such as PtSn4, ZrSiS, TlTaSe2 and PbTaSe2. However, in two-dimensional materials, experimental research on nodal line fermions is still lacking. Here, we report the discovery of two-dimensional Dirac nodal line fermio…

The topological properties and intrinsic anomalous Hall effect of CsCl-type ferromagnets GdZn and GdCd have been studied based on first-principles electronic structure calculations. According to the calculated band structures, both GdZn and GdCd host nodal lines near the Fermi level. Once the magnetization breaks the mirror symmetries, the nodal lines are gapped. This can create a huge Berry curvature. A large anomalous Hall effect is then generated when the Fermi level resides within the opened gaps of the nodal lines. Our works indicate that GdZn and GdCd can provide a promising platform for…
PbTaSe$_2$ is a unique topological material, in which the number of nodal lines is expected to change at the structural transition between the lower temperature/pressure "L" phase and the higher temperature/pressure "H" phase. We report the anomalous Nernst effect attributed to the Berry curvature of nodal lines and its change with the structural transition. In the L phase, the Nernst coefficient ($S_{yx}$) shows the step-like magnetic field dependence reminiscent of the anomalous Nernst effect of nonmagnetic Dirac/Weyl semimetals. By applying hydrostatic pressure, we discovered that the ampli…
We performed calculations of the electronic band structure and the Fermi surface as well as measured the longitudinal resistivity rhoxx(T,H), Hall resistivity rhoxy(T,H) and quantum oscillations of the magnetization as a function of temperature at various magnetic fields for MoO2 with monoclinic crystal structure. The band structure calculations show that MoO2 is a nodal-line semimetal when spin-orbit coupling is ignored. It was found that a large magnetoresistance reaching 5.03x10^4% at 2 K and 9 T, its nearly quadratic field dependence and a field-induced up-turn behavior of rhoxx(T), the ch…
Nodal-line semimetals are topological semimetals in which band touchings form nodal lines or rings. Around a loop that encloses a nodal line, an electron can accumulate a nontrivial $π$ Berry phase, so the phase shift in the Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillation may give a transport signature for the nodal-line semimetals. However, different experiments have reported contradictory phase shifts, in particular, in the WHM nodal-line semimetals (W=Zr/Hf, H=Si/Ge, M=S/Se/Te). For a generic model of nodal-line semimetals, we present a systematic calculation for the SdH oscillation of resistivity unde…
A large Berry curvature in the vicinity of the Fermi energy is required in order to obtain a large anomalous Hall and Nernst effect. This Berry curvature can be induced by Weyl points and gapped nodal lines. One of the possible mechanisms takes place in systems with a symmetry group where mirror planes lead to protected nodal line structures. When these mirror symmetries are broken, e. g. via fixing a magnetization direction, a gap in the former nodal line can create Weyl points and a large Berry curvature along the gapped lines. In this work we study this effect in a minimal effective model a…
We present the topology of spin-split Fermi surface of CaAgAs as determined by de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) effect measurements combined with ab initio calculations. We have determined the torus-shaped nodal-line Fermi surface from the dHvA oscillations of $β$ and $γ$ orbits. The former orbit encircles the nodal-line, while the latter does not. Nevertheless, a nontrivial Berry phase is found for both orbits. The nontrivial phase of $β$ arises from the orbital characters, which can be expressed as a pseudospin rotating around the nodal-line. On the other hand, the phase of $γ$ is attributed to the…
Topological magnetic semimetals, like Co3Sn2S2 and Co2MnGa, are known to display exotic transport properties, such as large intrinsic anomalous (AHE) due to uncompensated Berry curvature. The highly symmetric XPt3 compounds display anti-crossing gapped nodal lines, which are a driving mechanism in the intrinsic Berry curvature Hall effects. Uniquely, these compounds contain two sets of gapped nodal lines that harmoniously dominate the Berry curvature in this complex multiband system. We calculate a maximum AHE of 1965 S/cm in the CrPt3 by a state-of-the-art first principle electronic structure…
The ZrSiS family of compounds hosts various exotic quantum phenomena due to the presence of both topological nonsymmorphic Dirac fermions and nodal-line fermions. In this material family, the LnSbTe (Ln= lanthanide) compounds are particularly interesting owing to the intrinsic magnetism from magnetic Ln which leads to new properties and quantum states. In this work, the authors focus on the previously unexplored compound SmSbTe. The studies reveal a rare combination of a few functional properties in this material, including antiferromagnetism with possible magnetic frustration, electron correl…
Non-symmorphic symmetries protect Dirac line nodes in square net materials. This phenomenon has been most prominently observed in ZrSiS. Here, we systematically study the symmetry-protected nodal fermions that result from different ways of embedding the square net into a larger unit cell. Surprisingly, we find that a nonsymmorphic space group is not a necessary condition for a filling enforced semimetal: symmorphic space groups can also host nodal fermions that are enforced by band folding and electron count, that is, a combination of a particular structural motif combined with electron fillin…
In nodal-line semimetals, the gaps close along loops in ${\bf k}$ space, which are not at high-symmetry points. Typical mechanisms for the emergence of nodal lines involve mirror symmetry and the $π$ Berry phase. Here, we show via ab initio calculations that fcc calcium (Ca), strontium (Sr) and ytterbium (Yb) have topological nodal lines with the $π$ Berry phase near the Fermi level, when spin-orbit interaction is neglected. In particular, Ca becomes a nodal-line semimetal at high pressure. Owing to nodal lines, the Zak phase becomes either $π$ or 0 depending on the wavavector ${\bf k}$, and t…
Having been a ground for various topological fermionic phases, the family of ZrSiS-type 111 materials has been under experimental and theoretical investigations. Within this family of materials, the subfamily LnSbTe (Ln = lanthanide elements) is gaining interests in recent times as the strong correlation effects and magnetism arising from the 4f electrons of the lanthanides can provide an important platform to study the linking between topology, magnetism, and correlation. In this paper, we report the systematic study of the electronic structure of SmSbTe - a member of the LnSbTe subfamily - b…
