In oxide heterostructures, different materials are integrated into a single artificial crystal, resulting in a breaking of inversion-symmetry across the heterointerfaces. A notable example is the interface between polar and non-polar materials, where valence discontinuities lead to otherwise inaccessible charge and spin states. This approach paved the way to the discovery of numerous unconventional properties absent in the bulk constituents. However, control of the geometric structure of the electronic wavefunctions in correlated oxides remains an open challenge. Here, we create heterostructures consisting of ultrathin SrRuO$_3$, an itinerant ferromagnet hosting momentum-space sources of Berry curvature, and LaAlO$_3$, a polar wide-bandgap insulator. Transmission electron microscopy reveals an atomically sharp LaO/RuO$_2$/SrO interface configuration, leading to excess charge being pinned near the LaAlO$_3$/SrRuO$_3$ interface. We demonstrate through magneto-optical characterization, theoretical calculations and transport measurements that the real-space charge reconstruction modifies the momentum-space Berry curvature in SrRuO$_3$, driving a reorganization of the topological charges in the band structure. Our results illustrate how the topological and magnetic features of oxides can be manipulated by engineering charge discontinuities at oxide interfaces.
Perovskite oxide heteroepitaxy receives much attention because of the possibility to com- bine the diverse functionalities of perovskite oxide building blocks. A general boundary con- dition for the epitaxy is the presence of polar discontinuities at heterointerfaces. These polar discontinuities result in reconstructions, often creating new functionalities at the interface. However, for a significant number of materials these reconstructions are unwanted as they alter the intrinsic materials properties at the interface. Therefore, a strategy to eliminate this reconstruction of the polar discon…
We present an ab initio study of the (001) interfaces between two insulating perovskites, the polar LaAlO3 and the nonpolar SrTiO3. We observe an insulating-to-metallic transition above a critical LaAlO3 thickness. We explain that the high conductivity observed at the TiO2 /LaO interface and the lack of similar conductivity at the SrO/AlO2 interface are inherent in the atomic geometry of the system. A large interfacial hopping matrix element between cations causes the formation of a bound electron state at the TiO2 /LaO interface. This mechanism for the formation of interfacial bound states su…
Orbital reconstruction at interfaces between YBa2Cu3O6 and SrO-terminated SrTiO3 is studied using local spin density approximation (LSDA) with intra-atomic Coulomb repulsion (LSDA+U). The change of population of interfacial Cu 3d orbitals results in stabilization of a new oxidation state $3d^8$ which involves an additional modification of orbital occupancies in the nearest SrO and TiO2 layers. We find that an increase of electron charge in Cu 3d_{x^2-y^2} states counterbalances a depopulation of 3d_{3z^2-r^2} orbitals which induces, on account of the onsite Coulomb repulsion U, a splitting of …
We present an x-ray absorption study of the dependence of the V oxidation state on the thickness of LaVO$_3$ (LVO) and capping LaAlO$_3$ (LAO) layers in the multilayer structure of LVO sandwiched between LAO. We found that the change of the valence of V as a function of LAO layer thickness can be qualitatively explained by a transition between electronically reconstructed interfaces and a chemical reconstruction. The change as a function of LVO layer thickness is complicated by the presence of a considerable amount of V$^{4+}$ in the bulk of the thicker LVO layers.
We address the electronic structure of quantum wells in polar-nonpolar oxide heterojunction systems focusing on the case of non-polar BaVO$_3$ wells surrounded by polar LaTiO$_3$ barriers. Our discussion is based on a density functional description using the local spin density approximation with local correlation corrections (LSDA+U). We conclude that a variety of quite different two-dimensional electron systems can occur at interfaces between insulating materials depending on band line-ups and on the geometrical arrangement of polarity discontinuities.
A systematic microscopic theory of magnetically induced ferroelectricity and lattice modulation is presented for all electron configurations of Mott-insulating transition-metal oxides. Various mechanisms of polarization are identified in terms of a strong-coupling perturbation theory. Especially, the spin-orbit interaction acting on the ligand p orbitals is shown to give the ferroelectric polarization of the spin-current form, which plays a crucial role particularly in eg systems. Semiquantitative agreements with the multiferroic TbMnO3 are obtained. Predictions for X-ray and neutron scatterin…
We address a systematic microscopic theory of spin-dependent electric polarization in 3d oxides starting with a generic three-site two-hole cluster. A perturbation scheme realistic for 3d oxides is applied which implies the quenching of orbital moments by low-symmetry crystal field, strong intra-atomic correlations, the dp-transfer effects, and rather small spin-orbital coupling. An effective spin operator of the electric dipole moment is deduced incorporating both nonrelativistic and relativistic terms. The nonrelativistic electronic polarization mechanism related with the effects of the redi…
A layered iron oxide \rfeo ($R$: rare-earth elements) is an exotic dielectric material with charge-order (CO) driven electric polarization and magnetoelectric effect caused by spin-charge coupling. In this paper, a theory of electronic structure and dielectric property in \rfeo is presented. Charge frustration in paired-triangular lattices allows a charge imbalance without inversion symmetry. Spin frustration induces reinforcement of this polar CO by a magnetic ordering. We also analyze an orbital model for the Fe ion which does not show a conventional long-range order.
The interface between the insulators LaAlO$_3$ and SrTiO$_3$ accommodates a two-dimensional electron liquid (2DEL) -- a high mobility electron system exhibiting superconductivity as well as indications of magnetism and correlations. While this flagship oxide heterostructure shows promise for electronics applications, the origin and microscopic properties of the 2DEL remain unclear. The uncertainty remains in part because the electronic structures of such nanoscale buried interfaces are difficult to probe, and is compounded by the variable presence of oxygen vacancies and coexistence of both lo…

A promising route to tailoring the electronic properties of quantum materials and devices rests on the idea of orbital engineering in multilayered oxide heterostructures. Here we show that the interplay of interlayer charge imbalance and ligand distortions provides a knob for tuning the sequence of electronic levels even in intrinsically stacked oxides. We resolve in this regard the $d$-level structure of layered Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ by electron spin resonance. While canonical ligand-field theory predicts $g_{\parallel}$-factors $\!<\!2$ for positive tetragonal distortions as present in Sr$_2$IrO$_4$…
Since the discovery of two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) at the oxide interface of LaAlO3/SrTiO3, improving carrier mobility has become an important issue for device applications. In this paper, by using an alternate polar perovskite insulator (La0.3Sr0.7)(Al0.65Ta0.35)O3 (LSAT) for reducing lattice mismatch from 3.0% to 1.0%, the low-temperature carrier mobility has been increased 30 fold to 35,000 cm2V-1s-1. Moreover, two critical thicknesses for the LSAT/SrTiO3 (001) interface are found: one at 5 unit cell for appearance of the 2DEG, the other at 12 unit cell for a peak in the carrier mob…
The surfaces generated by cleaving non-polar, two-dimensional oxides are often considered to be perfect or ideal. However, single particle spectroscopies on Sr2RuO4, an archetypal non-polar two dimensional oxide, show significant cleavage temperature dependence. We demonstrate that this is not a consequence of the intrinsic characteristics of the surface: lattice parameters and symmetries, step heights, atom positions, or density of states. Instead, we find a marked increase in the density of defects at the mesoscopic scale with increased cleave temperature. The potential generality of these d…
The interface between the polar LaAlO$_3$ and nonpolar SrTiO$_3$ layers has been shown to exhibit various electronic and magnetic phases such as two dimensional electron gas, superconductivity, magnetism and electronic phase separation. These rich phases are expected due to the strong interplay between charge, spin and orbital degree of freedom at the interface between these complex oxides, leading to the electronic reconstruction in this system. However, until now all of these new properties have been studied extensively based on the interfaces which involve a polar LaAlO$_3$ layer. To invest…
Many transition metal oxides (TMOs) are Mott insulators due to strong Coulomb repulsion between electrons, and exhibit metal-insulator transitions (MITs) whose mechanisms are not always fully understood. Unlike most TMOs, minute doping in CaMnO3 induces a metallic state without any structural transformations. This material is thus an ideal platform to explore band formation through the MIT. Here, we use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to visualize how electrons delocalize and couple to phonons in CaMnO3. We show the development of a Fermi surface where mobile electrons coexist with h…
Neutron scattering has been used to study the nature of the ferromagnetic transition in a single crystal of the perovskite La0.7Ca0.3MnO3. Diffuse scattering from lattice polarons develops as the Curie temperature is approached from below, along with short range polaron correlations that are consistent with stripe formation. Both the scattering due to the polaron correlations and the anomalous quasielastic component in the magnetic fluctuation spectrum maximize very close to T_C, in a manner remarkably similar to the resistivity, indicating that they have a common origin.
Electronic, lattice, and spin interactions at the interfaces between crystalline complex transition metal oxides can give rise to a wide range of functional electronic and magnetic phenomena not found in bulk. At hetero-interfaces, these interactions may be enhanced by combining oxides where the polarity changes at the interface. The physical structure between non-polar SrTiO$_3$ and polar La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$MnO$_3$(x=0.2) is investigated using high resolution synchrotron x-ray diffraction to directly determine the role of structure in compensating the polar discontinuity. At both the oxide-oxide…
The ferroelectric (FE) control of electronic transport is one of the emerging technologies in oxide heterostructures. Many previous studies in FE tunnel junctions (FTJs) exploited solely the differences in the electrostatic potential across the FTJs that are induced by changes in the FE polarization direction. Here, we show that in practice the junction current ratios between the two polarization states can be further enhanced by the electrostatic modification in the correlated electron oxide electrodes, and that FTJs with nanometer thin layers can effectively produce a considerably large elec…
We calculated the self-energy corrections beyond the mean-field solution of the rotating antiferromagnetism theory using the functional integral approach. The frequency dependence of the scattering rate ${1}/τ$ is evaluated for different temperatures and doping levels, and is compared with other approaches and with experiment. The general trends we found are fairly consistent with the extended Drude analysis of the optical conductivity, and with the nearly antiferromagnetic Fermi liquid as far as the ${\bf k}$-anisotropy is concerned and some aspects of the Marginal-Fermi liquid behavior. The …
We propose a method to systematically control carrier densities at the interface of transition-metal oxide heterostructures without introducing disorders. By inserting non-polar layers sandwiched by polar layers, continuous carrier doping into the interface can be realized. This method enables us to control the total carrier densities per unit cell systematically up to high values of the order unity.
Electrolyte gating is a powerful means for tuning the carrier density and exploring the resultant modulation of novel properties on solid surfaces. However, the mechanism, especially its effect on the oxygen migration and electrostatic charging at the oxide heterostructures, is still unclear. Here we explore the electrolyte gating on oxygen-deficient interfaces between SrTiO3 (STO) crystals and LaAlO3 (LAO) overlayer through the measurements of electrical transport, X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and photoluminescence (PL) spectra. We found that oxygen vacancies (Ovac) were filled selecti…
Magnetism and transport are two key functional ingredients in modern electronic devices. In oxide heterostructures, ferroelectricity can provide a new route to control these two properties via electrical operations, which is scientifically interesting and technologically important. In this Brief Review, we will introduce recent progresses on this fast developing research field. Several subtopics will be covered. First, the ferroelectric polarization tuning of interfacial magnetism will be introduced, which includes the tuning of magnetization, easy axis, magnetic phases, as well as exchange bi…
The transfer of electrons between a solid surface and adsorbed atomic or molecular species is fundamental in natural and synthetic processes, being at the heart of most catalytic reactions and many sensors. In special cases, metallic conduction can be induced at the surface of, for example, Si-terminated SiC1, or mixed-terminated ZnO2, in the presence of a hydrogen adlayer. Generally, only the surface atoms are significantly affected by adsorbates. However, remotely changing electronic states far from the adsorbed layer is possible if these states are electrostatically coupled to the surface. …
Magnetic complex-oxide heterostructures are of keen interest because a wealth of phenomena at the interface of dissimilar materials can give rise to fundamentally new physics and potentially valuable functionalities. Altered magnetization, novel magnetic coupling and emergent interfacial magnetism at the epitaxial layered-oxide interfaces are under intensive investigation, which shapes our understanding on how to utilize those materials, particularly for spintronics. Neutron and x-ray based techniques have played a decisive role in characterizing interfacial magnetic structures and clarifying …
We show that the growth of the heterostructure LaGaO3/SrTiO3 yields the formation of a highly conductive interface. Our samples were carefully analyzed by high resolution electron microscopy, in order to assess their crystal perfection and to evaluate the abruptness of the interface. Their carrier density and sheet resistance are compared to the case of LaAlO3/SrTiO3 and a superconducting transition is found. The results open the route to widening the field of polar-non polar interfaces, pose some phenomenological constrains to their underlying physics and highlight the chance of tailoring the…
Diluted oxide interface of LaAl1-xMnxO/SrTiO3 (LAMO/STO) provides a new way of tuning the ground states of the interface between the two band insulators of LAO and STO from metallic/superconducting to highly insulating. Increasing the Mn doping level (x) leads to a delicate control of the carrier density as well as a raise in the electron mobility and spin polarization. Herein, we demonstrate a tunable Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and spin polarization of LAMO/STO (0.2 <= x <= 0.3) by applying a back gate. The presence of SOC causes the splitting of energy band into two branches by a spin …
Electronic structure and dielectric property in an electronic ferroelectricty, where electric polarization is driven by an electronic charge order without inversion symmetry, are studied. Motivated from layered iron oxides, roles of quantum fluctuation on ferroelectricity in a paired-triangular lattice are focused on. Three types of the extended V-t model are examined by the variational Monte-Carlo method with the Gutzwiller-type correlation factor. It is shown that electron transfer between the triangular layers corresponding to the inter-layer polarization fluctuation promotes the three-fold…
In complex transition metal oxide heterostructures of physically dissimilar perovskite compounds, interface phenomena can lead to novel physical properties not observed in either of their constituents. This remarkable feature opens new prospects for technological applications in oxide electronic devices based on nm-thin oxide films. Here we report on a significant electronic charge and orbital reconstruction at interfaces between YBa2Cu3O6 and SrTiO3 studied using local spin density approximation (LSDA) with intra-atomic Coulomb repulsion (LSDA+U). We show that the interface polarity results i…
In polar oxide interfaces phenomena such as conductivity, superconductivity, magnetism, one-dimensional conductivity and Quantum Hall states can emerge at the polar discontinuity. Combining controllable ferroelectricity at such interfaces can affect the superconducting properties and shed light on the mutual effects between the polar oxide and the ferroelectric oxide. Here we study the interface between the polar oxide LaAlO3 and the ferroelectric Ca-doped SrTiO3 by means of electrical transport combined with local imaging of the current flow with the use of scanning Superconducting Quantum In…
We present a multilateral theoretical study of bound polarons in oxide compounds MgO and α-Al_2O_3 (corundum). A continuum theory at arbitrary electron-phonon coupling is used for calculation of the energies of thermal dissociation, photoionization (optically induced release of an electron (hole) from the ground self-consistent state), as well as optical absorption to the non-relaxed excited states. Unlike the case of free strong-coupling polarons, where the ratio κof the photoionization energy to the thermal dissociation energy was shown to be always equal to 3, here this ratio depends on the…
The possibility to engineer the coupling of spin and valley physics is explored in ferroelectric oxide heterostructures with eg electronic configuration. We show that the polar structural distortion induces the appearance of spin-valley coupled properties, at the same time being responsible for a topological transition from a quantum spin-Hall insulating phase to a trivial band insulator. The coupled spin-valley physics is affected by the topological band inversion in a non-trivial way; while the valley-dependent spin polarization of both conduction and valence bands is preserved, a change of …
