The surfaces generated by cleaving non-polar, two-dimensional oxides are often considered to be perfect or ideal. However, single particle spectroscopies on Sr2RuO4, an archetypal non-polar two dimensional oxide, show significant cleavage temperature dependence. We demonstrate that this is not a consequence of the intrinsic characteristics of the surface: lattice parameters and symmetries, step heights, atom positions, or density of states. Instead, we find a marked increase in the density of defects at the mesoscopic scale with increased cleave temperature. The potential generality of these defects to oxide surfaces may have broad consequences to interfacial control and the interpretation of surface sensitive measurements.
A transition-metal oxide NaCo_2O_4 is a layered oxide in which CoO_2 and Na alternately stack along the c axis. Recently we have found that this compound shows unusually large thermopower with low resistivity, which is comparable to those of Bi_2Te_3. The negative transverse magnetoresistance and the strongly temperature-dependent Hall coefficient suggest that electron correlation dominates the conduction mechanism in NaCo_2O_4.
High-Tc Cu oxides consist of the alternating stack of the superconductive CuO2 layer and the block layer, such as Bi2Sr2O4 or La2-xSrxO2. By changing the block layer, we can change their physical properties, such as transition temperature Tc. The thermoelectric Co oxides have a similar layered structure composed of the conductive CoO2 layer and the blocking layer. Thus, we propose that their thremoelectric properties can be finely tuned by modifying the block layer.
We prepared polycrystalline samples of the A_xBO_2 type layered oxides Na_0.77MnO_2 and LiCoO_2, and measured thermal conductivity from 15 to 280 K. Na0.77MnO_2 shows a low thermal conductivity of 15 mW/cmK, while LiCoO_2 shows a much higher value of 40 mW/cmK at 280 K. By comparing them with the data of NaCo_2O_4, we have found that the low thermal conductivity of A_xBO_2 comes essentially from the A-ion deficiency, not from the layered structure itself.
A layered iron oxide \rfeo ($R$: rare-earth elements) is an exotic dielectric material with charge-order (CO) driven electric polarization and magnetoelectric effect caused by spin-charge coupling. In this paper, a theory of electronic structure and dielectric property in \rfeo is presented. Charge frustration in paired-triangular lattices allows a charge imbalance without inversion symmetry. Spin frustration induces reinforcement of this polar CO by a magnetic ordering. We also analyze an orbital model for the Fe ion which does not show a conventional long-range order.
We investigated the in-plane anisotropy on the resistivity and thermopower of Bi2-xPbxSr2Co2Oy single crystals, which have a misfit structure between the hexagonal CoO2 layer and the rock salt Bi2Sr2O4 layer. The resistivity and thermopower show significantly large anisotropy, which exceeds two at maximum. This anisotropy would come from the anisotropic pseudogap formation enhanced by the misfit structure. The thermopower changes with Pb doping to take a maximum at x=0.4. The misfit structure improves the thermoelectric properties through chemical pressure. The power factor is as large as 9 mu…
Layered oxides have been intensively studied due to their high designability for various electronic functions. Here we synthesize a new oxide as epitaxial thin film form by pulsed laser deposition. Film characterizations including cross-section and plan-view transmission electron microscopy confirm that the film is composed of twisted stack of triangular-lattice Rh and Bi layers. We foresee that the concept of twisted oxide layers will open up a new route to design further functional layered oxides.
We study a doubly-degenerate orbital model on a honeycomb attice. This is a model for orbital states in multiferroic layered iron oxides. The classical and quantum models are analyzed by spin-wave approximation, Monte-Carlo simulation and Lanczos method. A macroscopic number of degeneracy exists in the classical ground state. In the classical model, a peak in the specific heat appears at a temperature which is much lower than the mean-field ordering one. Below this temperature, angle of orbital pseudo-spin is fixed, but conventional orbital orders are not suggested. The degeneracy in the groun…
Misfit-layered (ML) cobalt oxides of the general formula of [MmA2Om+2]qCoO2 have been proven to be efficient thermoelectric materials as the structure is capable in accommodating the two seemingly contradictory characteristics of high electrical conductivity and large thermo-electric power. They are also potential hosts for other oxymoron-like functions. The known phases all contain one or two square-planar MO (M = Co, Bi, Pb, Tl, etc.) layers sandwiched together with AO (A = Ca, Sr, Ba, etc.) planes of square symmetry and CoO2 layers of hexagonal symmetry. Here we report realization of the si…
A general spin-state model and a qualitative physical picture have been proposed for a class of lately synthesized layered cobalt oxides (LCOs) by means of density functional calculations. As the plane corrugation of the cobalt-oxygen layer decreases, the LCOs evolve from a high-spin (HS) superexchange-coupled antiferromagnetic (AFM) insulator to an almost-HS AFM/ferromagnetic (FM) competing system where the FM coupling is mediated via the p-d exchange by an increasing amount of delocalized pdσholes having mainly the planar O 2p character. It is tentatively suggested that the delocalized holes…
Dielectric and magnetic phenomena in spin and charge frustrated system RFe2O4 (R is a rare-earth metal ion) are studied. An electronic model for charge, spin and orbital degrees in a pair of triangular-lattice planes is derived. We analyze this model by utilizing the mean-field approximation and the Monte-Carlo simulation in a finite size cluster. A three fold-type charge ordered structure with charge imbalance between the planes is stabilized in finite temperatures. This polar charge order is reinforced by spin ordering of Fe ions. This novel magneto-dielectric phenomenon is caused by spin fr…
Interplay of Fermi surface topology and electron correlation is the quintessential ingredient underlying spontaneous symmetry breaking in itinerant electronic systems. In one-dimensional (1D) systems at half-filling, the inherent Fermi surface nesting makes the translationally invariant metallic state unstable, which is known as Peierls instability. Extending the scope of Peierls instability to two (2D) or three dimensions (3D), however, is not straightforward, since the Fermi surface in higher dimensions is generally not nested. In this work, we show that a perfectly nested Fermi surface can …
We report measurements and analyses of resistivity, thermopower and Hall coefficient of single-crystalline samples of the layered Rh oxide K_0.49RhO_2. The resistivity is proportional to the square of temperature up to 300 K, and the thermopower is proportional to temperature up to 140 K. The Hall coefficient increases linearly with temperature above 100 K, which is ascribed to the triangular network of Rh in this compound. The different transport properties between Na_xCoO_2 and K_0.49RhO_2 are discussed on the basis of the different band width between Co and Rh evaluated from the magnetotran…
A new layered Ti-based pnictide oxide superconductor, Ba1-xNaxTi2Sb2O (0.0 <= x <= 0.33), is reported. X-ray studies reveal it crystallizes in the tetragonal CeCr2Si2C structure. The undoped parent compound, BaTi2Sb2O (P4/mmm; a=4.1196(1)Å; c=8.0951(2)Å), exhibits a CDW/SDW transition at 54K. Upon chemical doping with Na, the CDW/SDW transition is systematically suppressed and super-conductivity arises with the critical temperatures, Tc, increasing to 5.5 K. Bulk superconductivity is confirmed by resistivity, magnetic and heat capacity measurements. Like the high-Tc cuprates and the iron pnict…
We report infrared spectroscopic properties of the strongly correlated layered cobalt oxide [BiBa$_{0.66}$K$_{0.36}$O$_2$]CoO$_2$. These measurements performed on single crystals allow us to determine the optical conductivity as a function of temperature. In addition to a large temperature dependent transfer of spectral weight, an unconventional low energy mode is found. We show that both its frequency and damping scale as the temperature itself. In fact, a basic analysis demonstrates that this mode fully scales onto a function of $ω$/T up to room temperature. This behavior suggests low energy…
It has long been argued that the minimal model to describe the low-energy physics of the high-Tc superconducting cuprates must include copper states of other symmetries besides the canonical x2-y2 one, in particular the z2 orbital. Experimental and theoretical estimates of the energy splitting of these states vary widely. With a novel ab initio quantum chemical computational scheme we determine these energies for a range of copper-oxides and -oxyclorides, determine trends with the apical Cu-ligand distances and find excellent agreement with recent Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering measuremen…
We report on susceptibility measurements in the strongly correlated layered cobalt oxide [BiBa0.66K0.36O2]CoO2, which demonstrate the existence of a magnetic quantum critical point (QCP) governing the electronic properties. The investigated low frequency susceptibility displays a scaling behavior with both the temperature T and the magnetic field B ranging from the high-T non-Fermi liquid down to the low-T Fermi liquid. Whereas the inferred scaling form can be discussed within the standard framework of the quantum critical phenomena, the determined critical exponents suggest an unconventional …
We report a strong effect of interface-induced magnetization on the transport properties of magnetic tunnel junctions consisting of ferromagnetic manganite La$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_{3}$ and insulating cuprate PrBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7}$. Contrary to the typically observed steady increase of the tunnel magnetoresistance with decreasing temperature, this system exhibits a sudden anomalous decrease at low temperatures. Interestingly, this anomalous behavior can be attributed to the competition between the positive spin polarization of the manganite contacts and the negative spin-filter effect from …
Monte Carlo simulations are performed on the three-dimensional (3D) Ising model with the 2-1-4 layered perovskite structure as a minimal model for checkerboard charge ordering phenomena in layered perovskite oxides. Due to the interlayer frustration, only 2D long-range order emerges with a finite correlation length along the c axis. Critical exponents of the transition change continuously as a function of the interlayer coupling constant. The interlayer long-range Coulomb interaction decays exponentially and is negligible even between the second-neighbor layers. Instead, monoclinic distortion …
We found a new cobalt oxide (CaOH)1.14CoO2 by utilizing the high-pressure technique. X-ray and electron diffraction studies revealed that the compound has layer structure which consists of CdI2-type CoO2 layers and rock-salt-type double CaOH atomic layers. The two subcells have incommensurate periodicity along the a-axis, resulting in modulated crystal structure due to the inter-subcell interaction. The structural modulation affects carrier conduction through the potential randomness. We found that the two-dimensional (2-D) variable-range hopping (VRH) regime with hole conduction is dominant a…
Recent experiments indicate that static stripe-like charge order is generic to the hole-doped copper oxide superconductors and competes with superconductivity. Here we show that a similar type of charge order is present in La$_{5/3}$Sr$_{1/3}$CoO$_4$, an insulating analogue of the copper oxide superconductors containing cobalt in place of copper. The stripe phase we have detected is accompanied by short-range, quasi-one-dimensional, antiferromagnetic order, and provides a natural explanation for the distinctive hourglass shape of the magnetic spectrum previously observed in neutron scattering …
We report the results of neutron diffraction, ac and dc magnetization, heat-capacity, complex permittivity, and pyrocurrent measurements on an oxide, Li3NiRuO5, hitherto not paid much attention in the literature, except for a previous report on its promising electrochemical performance. We emphasize on the following findings: (i) Observation of re-entrant spin-glass behavior; that is, this oxide undergoes ferrilmagnetic ordering below 8- K, entering spin-glass regime around 12 K. (ii) There is no prominent feature in the complex dielectric permittivity (in particular, at the magnetic transitio…
We prepared polycrystalline samples of R$_2$PdO$_4$ (R = La, Nd, Sm and Gd) using a NaCl-flux technique. The measured resistivity is of the order of 10$^3-10^4$ $Ω$cm at room temperature, which is two orders of magnitude smaller than the values reported so far. We further studied the substitution effects of Ce for Nd in Nd$_{1.9}$Ce$_{0.1}$PdO$_4$, where the substituted Ce decreases the resistivity and the magnitude of the thermopower. The activation energy gap of 70-80 meV and the effective mass of 15 evaluated from the measured data are suitable for thermoelectric materials, but the mobility…
A compact expression has been obtained for the superexchange coupling of magnetic ions via intermediate anions with regard to polaron effects at both magnetic ions and intermediate anions. This expression is used to analyze the main features of the behavior of isotope shifts for temperatures of three types in layered cuprates: the Neel temperatures ($T_N$), critical temperatures of transitions to a superconducting state ($T_C$), and characteristic temperatures of the pseudogap in the normal state ($T^*$).
Comparison is made of the electronic structure of the little-studied layered transition metal oxide LiNbO$_2$ with that of Na$_x$CoO$_2$, which has attracted tremendous interest since superconductivity was discovered in its hydrate. Although the active transition metal $d$ states are quite different due to different crystal fields and band filling, both systems show a strong change of electronic structure with changes in the distance between the transition metal ion layer and the oxygen layers. The niobate is unusual in having a large second-neighbor hopping amplitude, and a nearest neighbor h…
We have investigated the low temperature specific heat properties as a function of magnetic field in the strongly correlated layered cobalt oxide [BiBa$_{0.66}$K$_{0.36}$O$_2$]CoO$_2$. These measurements reveal two kinds of magnetic field dependent contributions in qualitative agreement with the presence of a previously inferred magnetic Quantum Critical Point (QCP). First, the coefficient of the low temperature T$^3$ behavior of the specific heat turns out to sizeably decrease near a magnetic field consistent with the critical value reported in a recent paper. In addition, a moderate but sign…
Both Ba$_4$Mn$_3$O$_{10}$ and Sr$_4$Mn$_3$O$_{10}$ crystallize in an orthorhombic crystal structure consisting of corrugated layers containing Mn$_3$O$_{12}$ polydedra. The thermal variation of magnetic susceptibility of the compositions consists of a broad hump like feature indicating the presence of low dimensional magnetic correlation. We have systematically investigated the magnetic data of these compounds and found that the experimental results match quite well with the two dimensional Heisenberg model of spin-spin interaction. The two dimensional nature of the magnetic spin-spin interact…
Insulating transport in anisotropic metals: breakdown of Drude transport and the puzzling $c$-axis resistivity of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ and other layered oxides
Holes doped within the square CuO2 network specific to the cuprate superconducting materials have oxygen 2p character. We investigate the basic properties of such oxygen holes by wavefunction-based quantum chemical calculations on large embedded clusters. We find that a 2p hole induces ferromagnetic correlations among the nearest-neighbor Cu 3d spins. When moving through the antiferromagnetic background the hole must bring along this spin polarization cloud at nearby Cu sites, which gives rise to a substantial reduction of the effective hopping parameters. Such interactions can explain the rel…
The thermal conductivity of polycrystalline samples of (Na,Ca)Co_2O_4 is found to be unusually low, 20 mW/cmK at 280 K. On the assumption of the Wiedemann-Franz law, the lattice thermal conductivity is estimated to be 18 mW/cmK at 280 K, and it does not change appreciably with the substitution of Ca for Na. A quantitative analysis has revealed that the phonon mean free path is comparable with the lattice parameters, where the point-defect scattering plays an important role. Electronically the same samples show a metallic conduction down to 4.2 K, which strongly suggests that NaCo_2O_4 exhibits…
A very remarkable feature of the layered transition metal oxides (TMOs), whose most famous members are the high-temperature superconductors (HTSs), is that even though they are prepared as bulk three-dimensional single crystals, they display hugely anisotropic electrical and optical properties, seeming to be insulating perpendicular to the layers and metallic within them. This is the phenomenon of confinement, a concept at odds with the conventional theory of solids and recognized as due to magnetic and electron-lattice interactions in the layers which must be overcome at a substantial energy …
Charge and orbital ordering behaviors in the half doped bi-layered compound LaSr2Mn2O7 have been studied by resonant and non-resonant X-ray scattering. Three different order parameters, which correspond to the A-type antiferromagnetic, a charge and an orbital ordered states, were observed by measuring the magnetostriction and the superlattice peaks characterized by wavevectors (1/2 1/2 0) and (1/4 1/4 0), respectively. The superlattice reflections indicating the charge and orbital ordered states were observed below 210 K. Both the intensities reach a maximum at 160 K on cooling and become very…
Here results of a systematic study on oxygen stoichiometry are reported for the first three members of the novel CoSr2(Y,Ce)sCu2O5+2s or Co-12s2 homologous series, i.e. Co-1212, Co-1222 and Co-1232 phases with a SrO-CoO1-SrO-CuO2-(Y,Ce)-[O2-(Y,Ce)]s-1-CuO2 layered structure. The oxygen content was precisely determined by two independent chemical techniques: coulometric Cu+/Cu2+ titration and iodometric titration. Furthermore, oxygen stability/tunability was investigated by means of oxygenative and reductive an-nealings carried out in a thermobalance. It was revealed that all the three phases a…
Relativistic massless Dirac fermions can be probed with high-energy physics experiments, but appear also as low-energy quasi-particle excitations in electronic band structures. In condensed matter systems, their massless nature can be protected by crystal symmetries. Classification of such symmetry-protected relativistic band degeneracies has been fruitful, although many of the predicted quasi-particles still await their experimental discovery. Here we reveal, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, the existence of two-dimensional type-II Dirac fermions in the high-temperature superc…
From the first-principles calculations, we have studied the electronic and magnetic structures of compound Na$_2$Ti$_2$Pn$_2$O (Pn = As or Sb). We find that in the ground state Na$_2$Ti$_2$As$_2$O is a blocked checkerboard antiferromagnetic semiconductor with a small band gap of about 0.15 eV, in contrast, Na$_2$Ti$_2$Sb$_2$O is a bi-collinear antiferromagnetic semimetal, both with a small moment of about 0.5$μ_B$ around each Ti atom. We show that there is a strong Fermi surface nesting in Na$_2$Ti$_2$Pn$_2$O. And we verify that the blocked checkerboard and bi-collinear antiferromagnetic state…
We theoretically study a multi-band Hubbard model of pyrochlore oxides of the form A$_2$B$_2$O$_7$, where B is a heavy transition metal ion with strong spin-orbit coupling, in a thin film geometry orientated along the [111] direction. Along this direction, the pyrochlore lattice consists of alternating kagome and triangular lattice planes of B ions. We consider a single kagome layer, a bilayer, and the two different trilayers. As a function of the strength of the spin-orbit coupling, the direct and indirect $d$-orbital hopping, and the band filling, we identify a number of scenarios where a no…

Electronic structure and dielectric property in an electronic ferroelectricty, where electric polarization is driven by an electronic charge order without inversion symmetry, are studied. Motivated from layered iron oxides, roles of quantum fluctuation on ferroelectricity in a paired-triangular lattice are focused on. Three types of the extended V-t model are examined by the variational Monte-Carlo method with the Gutzwiller-type correlation factor. It is shown that electron transfer between the triangular layers corresponding to the inter-layer polarization fluctuation promotes the three-fold…
The interplay of non-local Coulomb repulsion and Hund's coupling in the d-orbital manifold in frustrated triangular lattices is analyzed by a mutliband extended Hubbard model. We find a rich phase diagram with several competing phases, including a robust pinball liquid phase, which is an unconventional metal characterized by threefold charge order, bad metallic behavior and the emergence of high spin local moments. Our results naturally explain the anomalous charge-ordered metallic state observed in the triangular layered compound AgNiO2. The potential relevance to other triangular transition …
We investigate the nature of the electronic ground state and electron-lattice couplings for doped chains of CuO_4 plaquettes or CuO_6 octahedra. The undoped configuration implies here Cu 3d^9 and O 2p^6 formal valence states. The results of multiconfiguration calculations on 4-plaquette (or 4-octahedra) linear clusters indicate strong electron-lattice interactions and polaronic behavior of the doped particles, for both electron and hole doping. For certain phases of the oxygen-ion half-breathing distortions a multi-well energy landscape is predicted. Since each well is associated to carriers l…
Thermoelectric properties of the layered cobalt oxide system LixCoO2 were investigated in a wide range of Li composition, 0.98 >= x >= 0.35. Single-phase bulk samples of LixCoO2 were successfully obtained through electrochemical deintercalation of Li from the pristine LiCoO2 phase. While LixCoO2 with x >= 0.94 is semiconductive, the highly Li-deficient phase (0.75 >= x >= 0.35) exhibits metallic conductivity. The magnitude of Seebeck coefficient at 293 K (S293K) significantly depends on the Li content (x). The S293K value is as large as +70 ~ +100 uV/K for x >= 0.94, and it rapidly decreases f…
Here we report the magnetic properties of the layered cobalt oxide system, LixCoO2, in the whole range of Li composition, 0 <= x <= 1. Based on dc-magnetic susceptibility data, combined with results of 59Co-NMR/NQR observations, the electronic phase diagram of LixCoO2 has been established. As in the related material NaxCoO2, a magnetic critical point is found to exist between x = 0.35 and 0.40, which separates a Pauli-paramagnetic and a Curie-Weiss metals. In the Pauli-paramagnetic regime (x <= 0.35), the antiferromagnetic spin correlations systematically increase with decreasing x. Neverthele…
We apply strong magnetic fields of H=28.5 \sim 43 T to suppress superconductivity (SC) in the cuprates Bi_{2}Sr_{2-x}La_xCuO_{6+δ} (x=0.65, 0.40, 0.25, 0.15 and 0), and investigate the low temperature (T) normal state by ^{63}Cu nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate (1/T_1) measurements. We find that the pseudogap (PG) phase persists deep inside the overdoped region but terminates at x \sim 0.05 that corresponds to the hole doping concentration of approximately 0.21. Beyond this critical point, the normal state is a Fermi liquid characterized by the T_1T=const relation. A comparison of the supe…
We have prepared polycrystalline samples of LaSrRh$_{1-x}$Ga$_x$O$_4$ and LaSr$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$RhO$_4$,and have measured the x-ray diffraction, resistivity, Seebeck coefficient, magnetization and electron spin resonance in order to evaluate their electronic states. The energy gap evaluated from the resistivity and the Seebeck coefficient systematically changes with the Ga concentration, and suggests that the system changes from a small polaron insulator to a band insulator. We find that all the samples show Curie-Weiss-like susceptibility with a small Weiss temperature of the order of 1 K, which …
We investigated the electronic structures of the two-dimensional layered perovskite Sr$_{2}$\textit{M}O$_{4}$ (\textit{M}=4\textit{d} Ru, 4\textit{d} Rh, and 5\textit{d} Ir) using optical spectroscopy and polarization-dependent O 1\textit{s} x-ray absorption spectroscopy. While the ground states of the series of compounds are rather different, their optical conductivity spectra $σ(ω)$ exhibit similar interband transitions, indicative of the common electronic structures of the 4\textit{d} and 5\textit{d} layered oxides. The energy splittings between the two $e_{g}$ orbitals, $i.e.$, $d_{3z^{2}-…

We report an experimental and computational study of magnetic and electronic properties of the layered Ru(V) oxide SrRu2O6 (hexagonal, P-3 1m), which shows antiferromagnetic order with a Néel temperature of 563(2) K, among the highest for 4d oxides. Magnetic order occurs both within edge-shared octahedral sheets and between layers and is accompanied by anisotropic thermal expansivity that implies strong magnetoelastic coupling of Ru(V) centers. Electrical transport measurements using focused ion beam induced deposited contacts on a micron-scale crystallite as a function of temperature show p-t…
Specific heat of the layered NaxCoO2 (x=0.65, 0.70 and 0.75) oxides has been measured in the temperature range of 3-360 K and magnetic field of 0 and 9 T. The analysis of data, assuming the combined effect of inter-layer superexchange and the phase separation into mesoscopic magnetic domains with localized spins embedded in a matrix with itinerant electronic character, suggests that the dominant contribution to the specific heat in the region of short-range ordering is mediated by quasi-2D antiferromagnetic clusters, perpendicular to the CoO2 layers.
The experimentally observed difference of superconducting critical temperature $T_{c}$ in hole-doped cuprates is studied by using an extended interlayer coupling model for layered d-wave superconductors. We show that the change of the maximum $T_{c}$ from series to series is determined by the next nearest neighboring hopping $t^{\prime}$, while the difference of the maximum $T_{c}$ among the compounds in a homogeneous series is controlled by the interlayer pairing strength. Our results provide helpful guidelines in the search for new high-$T_{c}$ superconductors.
We used high resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to reveal the Fermi surface and key transport parameters of the metallic state of the layered Colossal Magnetoresistive (CMR) oxide La1.2Sr1.8Mn2O7. With these parameters the calculated in-plane conductivity is nearly one order of magnitude larger than the measured DC conductivity. This discrepancy can be accounted for by including the pseudogap which removes at least 90% of the spectral weight at the Fermi energy. Key to the pseudogap and many other properties are the parallel straight Fermi surface sections which are highly su…
We explore layered strongly correlated materials as a platform to identify and control unconventional heat transfer phenomena. We demonstrate that these systems can be tailored to sustain a wide spectrum of heat transport regimes, ranging from ballistic, to hydrodynamic all the way to diffusive. Within the hydrodynamic regime, wave-like temperature oscillations are predicted up to room temperature. All the above phenomena have a purely electronic origin, stemming from the existence of two components in the electronic system, each one thermalized at different temperatures. The interaction stren…
We report high-resolution photoemission spectroscopy of newly-discovered iron-based layered superconductor La(O$_{0.93}$F$_{0.07}$)FeAs (Tc = 24 K). We found that the superconducting gap shows a marked deviation from the isotropic s-wave symmetry. The estimated gap size at 5 K is 3.6 meV in the s- or axial p-wave case, while it is 4.1 meV in the polar p- or d-wave case. We also found a pseudogap of 15-20 meV above Tc, which is gradually filled-in with increasing temperature and closes at temperature far above Tc similarly to copper-oxide high-temperature superconductors.
