We apply a method inspired by Ratner's work on quantitative mixing for the geodesic flow (Ergod. Theory Dyn. Syst., 1987) and developed by Burger (Duke Math. J., 1990) to study ergodic integrals for horocycle flows. We derive an explicit asymptotic expansion for horocycle averages, recovering a celebrated result by Flaminio and Forni (Duke Math. J., 2003), and we show that the coefficients in the asymptotic expansion are Hölder continuous with respect to the base point. Furthermore, we provide short and streamlined proofs of the spatial limit theorems of Bufetov and Forni (Ann. Sci. Éc. Norm. Supér., 2014) and, in an appendix by Emilio Corso, of a temporal limit theorem by Dolgopyat and Sarig (J. Stat. Phys., 2017).
The Ratner property, a quantitative form of divergence of nearby trajectories, is a central feature in the study of parabolic homogeneous flows. Discovered by Marina Ratner and used in her 1980th seminal works on horocycle flows, it pushed forward the disjointness theory of such systems. In this paper, exploiting a recent variation of the Ratner property, we prove new disjointness phenomena for smooth parabolic flows beyond the homogeneous world. In particular, we establish a general disjointness criterion based on the switchable Ratner property. We then apply this new criterion to study disjo…
A celebrated result of Ratner from the eighties says that two horocycle flows on hyperbolic surfaces of finite area are either the same up to algebraic change of coordinates, or they have no non-trivial joinings. Recently, Mohammadi and Oh extended Ratner's theorem to horocycle flows on hyperbolic surfaces of infinite area but finite genus. In this paper, we present the first joining classification result of a horocycle flow on a hyperbolic surface of infinite genus: a $\mathbb{Z}$ or $\mathbb{Z}^2$-cover of a general compact hyperbolic surface. We also discuss several applications.
We derive, from the work of M. Ratner on joinings of time-changes of horocycle flows and from the result of the authors on its cohomology, the property of orthogonality of powers for non-trivial smooth time-changes of horocycle flows on compact quotients. Such a property is known to imply P. Sarnak's Möbius orthogonality conjecture, already known for horocycle flows by the work of J. Bourgain, P. Sarnak and T. Ziegler.
We provide a new proof that the horocycle flow preserving the Margulis measure on a variable negative curvature surface is standard. This was first proved by Ratner. The main purpose of this note is to provide a simplified case of the arguments for Kakutani equivalence of unipotent flows on homogeneous spaces, which have similar but more complicated structures, as well as illustrate the versatility of the method by applying it to a non-homogeneous flow.
We formulate and prove a finite version of Vinogradov's bilinear sum inequality. We use it together with Ratner's joinings theorems to prove that the Mobius function is disjoint from discrete horocycle flows on $Γ\backslash SL_2(\mathbb{R}).
This article is a first step towards the understanding of the dynamics of the horocycle flow on foliated manifolds by hyperbolic surfaces. This is motivated by a question formulated by M. Martinez and A. Verjovsky on the minimality of this flow assuming that the natural affine foliation is minimal too. We have tried to offer a simple presentation, which allows us to update and shed light on the classical theorem proved by G. A. Hedlund in 1936 on the minimality of the horocycle flow on compact hyperbolic surfaces. Firstly, we extend this result to the product of PSL(2,R) and a Lie group G, whi…
Let $M = Γ\backslash \text{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ be a compact quotient of $\text{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ equipped with the normalized Haar measure $\text{vol}$, and let $\{h_t\}_{t \in \mathbb{R}}$ denote the horocycle flow on $M$. Given $p \in M$ and $W \in \mathfrak{sl}_2(\mathbb{R}) \setminus \{0\}$ not parallel to the generator of the horocycle flow, let $γ_{p}^W$ denote the probability measure uniformly distributed along the arc $s \mapsto p \exp(sW)$ for $0\leq s \leq 1$. We establish quantitative estimates for the rate of convergence of $[(h_t)_{\ast} γ_{p}^W](f)$ to $\text{vol}(f)$ for suffici…
We show that a free, ergodic action of $\mathbb{R}$ with (finite) Ratner's property has countable discrete essential centralizer. Moreover we show that such flows are mildly mixing.
A classic result due to Furstenberg is the strict ergodicity of the horocycle flow for a compact hyperbolic surface. Strict ergodicity is unique ergodicity with respect to a measure of full support, and therefore implies minimality. The horocycle flow has been previously studied on minimal foliations by hyperbolic surfaces on closed manifolds, where it is known not to be minimal in general. In this paper, we prove that for the special case of Riemannian foliations, strict ergodicity of the horocycle flow still holds. This in particular proves that this flow is minimal, which establishes a conj…
We show that the horocyclic flow of an orientable compact higher genus surface without conjugate points and with continuous Green bundles is uniquely ergodic. The result applies to nonflat nonpositively curved surfaces and generalizes a classical result of Furstenberg and Marcus in negative curvature. The proof relies on the definition of a uniformly expanding parametrization on the quotient by the strips of the surface.
We give a rate of equidistribution of lifts of horocycles from the space $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb Z)\backslash \mathrm{SL}(2, \mathbb R)$ to the space $\mathrm{ASL}(2,\mathbb Z)\backslash \mathrm{ASL}(2,\mathbb R)$, making effective a theorem of Elkies and McMullen. This result constitutes an effective version of Ratner's measure classification theorem for measures supported on general horocycle lifts. The method used relies on Weil's resolution of the Riemann hypothesis for function fields in one variable and generalizes the approach of Strömbergsson to the case of linear lifts and that of Brow…
Let G=ASL(2,R) be the affine special linear group of the plane, and set Gamma=ASL(2,Z). Building on recent work of Strömbergsson we prove a rate of equidistribution for the orbits of a certain 1-dimensional unipotent flow of Gamma\G, which projects to a closed horocycle in the unit tangent bundle to the modular surface. We use this to answer a question of Elkies and McMullen by making effective the convergence of the gap distribution of \sqrt{n} modulo 1.
A point is called generic for a flow preserving an infinite ergodic invariant Radon measure, if its orbit satisfies the conclusion of the ratio ergodic theorem for every pair of continuous functions with compact support and non-zero integrals. The generic points for horocycle flows on hyperbolic surfaces of finite genus are understood, but there are no results in infinite genus. We give such a result, by characterizing the generic points for $\Z^d$--covers.
We provide a self-contained, accessible introduction to Ratner's Equidistribution Theorem in the special case of horocyclic flow on a complete hyperbolic surface of finite area. This equidistribution result was first obtained in the early 1980s by Dani and Smillie and later reappeared as an illustrative special case of Ratner's work on the equidistribution of unipotent flows in homogeneous spaces. We also prove an interesting probabilistic result due to Breuillard: on the modular surface an arbitrary uncentered random walk on the horocycle through almost any point will fail to equidistribute, …
We consider typical area preserving flows on higher genus surfaces and prove that the flow restricted to mixing minimal components is mixing of all orders, thus answering affimatively to Rohlin's multiple mixing question in this context. The main tool is a variation of the Ratner property (a property originally proved by Ratner for the horocycle flow), i.e. the switchable Ratner property introduced by Fayad and Kanigowski for special flows over rotations. This property, which is of independent interest, provides a quantitative description of the parabolic behaviour of these flows and has impli…
We show that the Hausdorff dimension of any proper Teichmüller horocycle flow orbit closure on any $\mathrm{SL}{(2,\mathbf{R})}$-invariant subvariety of Abelian or quadratic differentials is bounded away from the dimension of the subvariety in terms of the polynomial mixing rate of the Teichmüller horocycle flow on the subvariety. The proof is based on abstract methods for measurable flows adapted from work of Bourgain and Katz on sparse ergodic theorems.
We study dynamics of the horocycle flow on strata of translation surfaces, introduce new invariants for ergodic measures, and analyze the interaction of the horocycle flow and real Rel surgeries. We use this analysis to complete and extend results of Calta and Wortman classifying horocycle-invariant measures in the eigenform loci. We classify the orbit-closures and prove that every orbit is equidistributed in its orbit-closure. We also prove equidistribution statements regarding limits of sequences of measures, some of which have applications to counting problems.
We prove bounds for twisted ergodic averages for horocycle flows of hyperbolic surfaces, both in the compact and in the non-compact finite area case. From these bounds we derive effective equidistribution results for horocycle maps. As an application of our main theorems in the compact case we further improve on a result of A. Venkatesh, recently already improved by J. Tanis and P. Vishe, on a sparse equidistribution problem for classical horocycle flows proposed by N. Shah and G. Margulis, and in the general non-compact, finite area case we prove bounds on Fourier coefficients of cups forms w…
We consider special flows over two-dimensional rotations by $(α,β)$ on $\T^2$ and under piecewise $C^2$ roof functions $f$ satisfying von Neumann's condition $\int_{\T^2}f_x(x,y)\,dx\,dy\neq 0\neq \int_{\T^2}f_y(x,y)\,dx\,dy.$ Such flows are shown to be always weakly mixing and never partially rigid. For an uncountable set of $(α,β)$ with both $α$ and $β$ of unbounded partial quotients the strong mixing property is proved to hold. It is also proved that while specifying to a subclass of roof functions and to ergodic rotations for which $α$ and $β$ are of bounded partial quotients the correspon…
We study the action of the horocycle flow on the moduli space of abelian differentials in genus two. In particular, we exhibit a classification of a specific class of probability measures that are invariant and ergodic under the horocycle flow on the stratum H(1,1).
We show that the ergodic averages for the horocycle flow on the two-torus associated by Giulietti and Liverani to an Anosov diffeomorphism either grow linearly or are bounded, in other words there are no deviations. For this, we use topological invariance of the Artin-Mazur zeta function to exclude resonances outside of the open unit disc. Transfer operators acting on suitable spaces of anisotropic distributions and their Ruelle determinants are the key tools in the proof. As a bonus, we show that for any smooth Anosov diffeomorphism F on the two-torus, the correlations for the measure of maxi…
Measure rigidity is a branch of ergodic theory that has recently contributed to the solution of some fundamental problems in number theory and mathematical physics. Examples are proofs of quantitative versions of the Oppenheim conjecture, related questions on the spacings between the values of quadratic forms, a proof of quantum unique ergodicity for certain classes of hyperbolic surfaces, and an approach to the Littlewood conjecture on the nonexistence of multiplicatively badly approximable numbers. In these lectures we discuss a few simple applications of one of the central results in measur…
We adapt to $C^r$ Anosov flows on compact manifolds a construction for $C^r$ discrete-time hyperbolic dynamics ($r>1$), obtaining anisotropic Banach or Hilbert spaces on which the resolvent of the generator of weighted transfer operators for the flow is quasi-compact. We apply this to study the ergodic integrals of the horocycle flows $h_ρ$ of $C^r$ codimension one mixing Anosov flows. In dimension three, for any suitably bunched $C^3$ contact Anosov flow with orientable strong-stable distribution, we establish power-law convergence of the ergodic average. We thereby implement the program of G…
The main results of this paper are limit theorems for horocycle flows on compact surfaces of constant negative curvature. One of the main objects of the paper is a special family of horocycle-invariant finitely-additive Hoelder measures on rectifiable arcs. An asymptotic formula for ergodic integrals for horocycle flows is obtained in terms of the finitely-additive measures, and limit theorems follow as a corollary of the asymptotic formula. The objects and results of this paper are similar to those in [15], [16], [4] and [5] for translation flows on flat surfaces. The arguments are based on t…
We present a method, based on commutator methods, for the spectral analysis of uniquely ergodic dynamical systems. When applicable, it leads to the absolute continuity of the spectrum of the corresponding unitary operators. As an illustration, we consider time changes of horocycle flows, skew products over translations and Furstenberg transformations. For time changes of horocycle flows, we obtain absolute continuity under assumptions weaker than the ones to be found in the literature.
Let $M$ be a closed oriented surface endowed with a Riemannian metric $g$ and let $Ω$ be a 2-form. We show that the magnetic flow of the pair $(g,Ω)$ has zero asymptotic Maslov index and zero Liouville action if and only $g$ has constant Gaussian curvature, $Ω$ is a constant multiple of the area form of $g$ and the magnetic flow is a horocycle flow. This characterization of horocycle flows implies that if the magnetic flow of a pair $(g,Ω)$ is $C^1$-conjugate to the horocycle flow of a hyperbolic metric $\bar{g}$ then there exists a constant $a>0$, such that $ag$ and $\bar{g}$ are isometric an…
We construct a Poincaré section for the horocycle flow on the modular surface $SL(2, \R)/SL(2, \Z)$, and study the associated first return map, which coincides with a transformation (the {\it BCZ map}) defined by Boca-Cobeli-Zaharescu. We classify ergodic invariant measures for this map and prove equidistribution of periodic orbits. As corollaries, we obtain results on the average depth of cusp excursions and on the distribution of gaps for Farey sequences and slopes of lattice vectors.
We study the ergodic properties of horospheres on rank 1 manifolds with non-positive curvature. We prove that the horospheres are equidistributed under the action of the geodesic flow towards the Bowen-Margulis measure, on a large class of manifolds. In the case of surfaces, we define a parametrization of the horocyclic flow on the set of horocycles containing a rank 1 vector that is recurrent under the action of the geodesic flow. We prove that the horocyclic flow in restriction to this set is uniquely ergodic. The results are valid for large classes of manifolds, including the compact ones.
Unipotent flows are well-behaved dynamical systems. In particular, Marina Ratner has shown that the closure of every orbit for such a flow is of a nice algebraic (or geometric) form. After presenting some consequences of this important theorem, these lectures explain the main ideas of the proof. Some algebraic technicalities will be pushed to the background. Chapter 1 is the main part of the book. It is intended for a fairly general audience, and provides an elementary introduction to the subject, by presenting examples that illustrate the theorem, some of its applications, and the main ideas …
Ten years ago A. Zorich discovered, by computer experiments on interval exchange transformations, some striking new power laws for the ergodic integrals of generic non-exact Hamiltonian flows on higher genus surfaces. In Zorich's later work and in a joint paper authored by M. Kontsevich, Zorich and Kontsevich were able to explain conjecturally most of Zorich's discoveries by relating them to the ergodic theory of Teichmüller flows on moduli spaces of Abelian differentials. In this article, we outline a generalization of the Kontsevich-Zorich framework to a class of `renormalizable' flows on `p…
