In this paper, we provide two types of boundary path groupoids from a generalized Boolean dynamical system $(\mathcal{B},\mathcal{L}, θ, \mathcal{I}_α)$. For the first groupoid, we associate an inverse semigroup to a generalized Boolean dynamical system and use the tight spectrum $\mathsf{T}$ as the unit space of a groupoid $Γ(\mathcal{B},\mathcal{L}, θ, \mathcal{I}_α)$ that is isomorphic to the tight groupoid $\mathcal{G}_{tight}$. The other one is defined as the Renault-Deaconu groupoid $Γ(\partial E, σ_E)$ arising from a topological correspondence $E$ associated with a generalized Boolean dynamical system. We then prove that the tight spectrum $\mathsf{T} $ is homeomorphic to the boundary path space $\partial E$ obtained from the topological correspondence. Using this result, we prove that the groupoid $Γ(\mathcal{B},\mathcal{L}, θ, \mathcal{I}_α)$ equipped with the topology induced from the topology on $\mathcal{G}_{tight}$ is isomorphic to $Γ(\partial E, σ_E)$ as a topological groupoid. Finally, we show that their $C^*$-algebras are isomorphic to the $C^*$-algebra of the generalized Boolean dynamical system.
We prove that ample groupoids with sigma-compact unit spaces are equivalent if and only if they are stably isomorphic in an appropriate sense, and relate this to Matui's notion of Kakutani equivalence. We use this result to show that diagonal-preserving stable isomorphisms of graph C*-algebras or Leavitt path algebras give rise to isomorphisms of the groupoids of the associated stabilised graphs. We deduce that the Leavitt path algebras $L_Z(E_2)$ and $L_Z(E_{2-})$ are not stably *-isomorphic.
We develop a theory of graph C*-algebras using path groupoids and inverse semigroups. Row finiteness is not assumed so that the theory applies to graphs for which there are vertices emitting a countably infinite set of edges. We show that the path groupoid is amenable, and give a groupoid proof of a recent theorem of Szymanski characterizing when a graph C*-algebra is simple.
In this work we realize Leavitt path algebras as partial skew groupoid rings. This yields a free path groupoid grading on Leavitt path algebras. Using this grading we characterize free path groupoid graded isomorphisms of Leavitt path algebras that preserves generators.
This dissertation concerns the classification of groupoid and higher-rank graph C*-algebras and has two main components. Firstly, for a groupoid it is shown that the notions of strength of convergence in the orbit space and measure-theoretic accumulation along the orbits are equivalent ways of realising multiplicity numbers associated to a sequence of induced representations of the groupoid C*-algebra. Examples of directed graphs are given, showing how to determine the multiplicity numbers associated to various sequences of induced representations of the directed graph C*-algebras. The second …
In this paper we describe a new method of defining C*-algebras from oriented combinatorial data, thereby generalizing the constructions of algebras from directed graphs, higher-rank graphs, and ordered groups. We show that only the most elementary notions of concatenation and cancellation of paths are required to define versions of Cuntz-Krieger and Toeplitz-Cuntz-Krieger algebras, and the presentation by generators and relations follows naturally. We give sufficient conditions for the existence of an AF core, hence of the nuclearity of the C*-algebras, and for aperiodicity, which is used to p…
In this paper we give some sufficient and some necessary conditions for an étale groupoid algebra to be a prime ring. As an application we recover the known primeness results for inverse semigroup algebras and Leavitt path algebras. It turns out that primeness of the algebra is connected with the dynamical property of topological transitivity of the groupoid. We obtain analogous results for semiprimeness.
When the theory of Leavitt path algebras was already quite advanced, it was discovered that some of the more difficult questions were susceptible to a new approach using topological groupoids. The main result that makes this possible is that the Leavitt path algebra of a graph is graded isomorphic to the Steinberg algebra of the graph's boundary path groupoid. This expository paper has three parts: Part 1 is on the Steinberg algebra of a groupoid, Part 2 is on the path space and boundary path groupoid of a graph, and Part 3 is on the Leavitt path algebra of a graph. It is a self-contained refe…
Given a self-similar groupoid action $(G,E)$ on the path space of a finite graph, we study the associated Exel-Pardo étale groupoid ${\mathcal G}(G,E)$ and its $C^*$-algebra $C^*(G,E)$. We review some facts about groupoid actions, skew products and semi-direct products and generalize a result of Renault about similarity of groupoids which resembles Takai duality. We also describe a general strategy to compute the $K$-theory of $C^*(G,E)$ and the homology of ${\mathcal G}(G,E)$ in certain cases and illustrate with an example.
We construct ample groupoids from certain categories of paths, and prove that their $C^*$-algebras coincide with the continued fraction AF algebras of Effros and Shen. The proof relies on recent classification results for simple nuclear $C^*$-algebras. The groupoids are not principal. This provides examples of Cartan subalgebras in the continued fraction AF algebras that are isomorphic, but not conjugate, to the standard diagonal subalgebras.
Given an ample, Hausdorff groupoid $\mathcal{G}$, and a unital commutative ring $R$, we consider the Steinberg algebra $A_R(\mathcal {G})$. First we prove a uniqueness theorem for this algebra and then, when $\mathcal{G}$ is graded by a cocycle, we study graded ideals in $A_R(\mathcal {G})$. Applications are given for two classes of ample groupoids, namely those coming from actions of groups on graphs, and also to groupoids defined in terms of Boolean dynamical systems.
We consider the ideal structure of Steinberg algebras over a commutative ring with identity. We focus on Hausdorff groupoids that are strongly effective in the sense that their reductions to closed subspaces of their unit spaces are all effective. For such a groupoid, we completely describe the ideal lattice of the associated Steinberg algebra over any commutative ring with identity. Our results are new even for the special case of Leavitt path algebras; so we describe explicitly what they say in this context, and give two concrete examples.
The second author showed how Katsura's construction of the C*-algebra of a topological graph E may be twisted by a Hermitian line bundle L over the edge space E. The correspondence defining the algebra is obtained as the completion of the compactly supported continuous sections of L. We prove that the resulting C*-algebra is isomorphic to a twisted groupoid C*-algebra where the underlying groupoid is the Renault-Deaconu groupoid of the topological graph with Yeend's boundary path space as its unit space.
Let G be a locally compact, Hausdorff groupoid in which s is a local homeomorphism and the unit space is totally disconnected. Assume there is a continuous cocycle c from G into a discrete group $Γ$. We show that the collection A(G) of locally-constant, compactly supported functions on G is a dense *-subalgebra of C_c(G) and that it is universal for algebraic representations of the collection of compact open bisections of G. We also show that if G is the groupoid associated to a row-finite graph or k-graph with no sources, then A(G) is isomorphic to the associated Leavitt path algebra or Kumji…
Categories of paths are a generalization of several kinds of oriented discrete data that have been used to construct $C^*$-algebras. The techniques introduced to study these constructions apply almost verbatim to the more general situation of left cancellative small categories. We develop this theory and derive the structure of the $C^*$-algebras in the most general situation. We analyze the regular representation, and the Wiener-Hopf algebra in the case of a subcategory of a groupoid.
Given a continuous open surjective morphism $π:G\to H$ of étale groupoids with amenable kernel, we construct a Fell bundle $E$ over $H$ and prove that its C*-algebra $C^*_r(E)$ is isomorphic to $C^*_r(G)$. This is related to results of Fell concerning C*-algebraic bundles over groups. The case $H=X$, a locally compact space, was treated earlier by Ramazan. We conclude that $C^*_r(G)$ is strongly Morita equivalent to a crossed product, the C*-algebra of a Fell bundle arising from an action of the groupoid $H$ on a C*-bundle over $H^0$. We apply the theory to groupoid morphisms obtained from ext…
We obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for pure infiniteness of the path groupoid $C^*$-algebra of a row-finite graph without sinks. In particular we show that for such a path groupoid $\mathcal{G}_E$, the properties of being essential principal and the existence of a basis of $(\mathcal{G}_E^a, 2, 1)$-paradoxical sets for the topology are not only sufficient, but also necessary.
Let $G$ and $H$ be Hausdorff ample groupoids and let $R$ be a commutative unital ring. We show that if $G$ and $H$ are equivalent in the sense of Muhly-Renault-Williams, then the associated Steinberg algebras of locally constant $R$-valued functions with compact support are Morita equivalent. We deduce that collapsing a ``collapsible subgraph" of a directed graph in the sense of Crisp and Gow does not change the Morita-equivalence class of the associated Leavitt path $R$-algebra, and therefore a number of graphical constructions which yield Morita equivalent $C^*$-algebras also yield Morita eq…
The path spaces of a directed graph play an important role in the study of graph $\css$. These are topological spaces that were originally constructed using groupoid and inverse semigroup techniques. In this paper, we develop a simple, purely topological, approach to this construction, based on Tychonoff's theorem. In fact, the approach is shown to work even for higher dimensional graphs satisfying the finitely aligned condition, and we construct the groupoid of the graph. Motivated by these path space results, we prove a Tychonoff theorem for an infinite, countable product of locally compact …
We fix a path model for the space of filters of the inverse semigroup $\mathcal{S}_Λ$ associated to a left cancellative small category $Λ$. Then, we compute its tight groupoid, thus giving a representation of its $C^*$-algebra as a (full) groupoid algebra. Using it, we characterize when these algebras are simple. Also, we determine amenability of the tight groupoid under mild, reasonable hypotheses.
In this paper, two sufficient and necessary conditions are given. The first one characterizes when the boundary path groupoid of a topological graph without singular vertices has closed interior of its isotropy group bundle, and the second one characterizes when the path groupoid of a row-finite k-graph without sources has closed interior of its isotropy group bundle. It follows that the associated topological graph algebra and the associated k-graph C*-algebra have Cartan subalgebras due to a result of Brown-Nagy-Reznikoff-Sims-Williams.
Work of Jean Renault shows that, for topologically principal étale groupoids, a diagonal-preserving isomorphism of reduced $C^*$-algebras yields an isomorphism of groupoids. Several authors have proved analogues of this result for ample groupoid algebras over integral domains under suitable hypotheses. In this paper, we extend the known results by allowing more general coefficient rings and by weakening the hypotheses on the groupoids. Our approach has the additional feature that we only need to impose conditions on one of the two groupoids. Applications are given to Leavitt path algebras.
This paper studies simplicity, primitivity and semiprimitivity of algebras associated to étale groupoids. Applications to inverse semigroup algebras are presented. The results also recover the semiprimitivity of Leavitt path algebras and can be used to recover the known primitivity criterion for Leavitt path algebras.
We show the reduced $C^*$-algebra of a graded ample groupoid is a strongly graded $C^*$-algebra if and only if the corresponding Steinberg algebra is a strongly graded ring. We apply this result to get a theorem about the Leavitt path algebra and $C^*$-algebra of an arbitrary graph.
We study the topological full group of ample groupoids over locally compact spaces. We extend Matui's definition of the topological full group from the compact, to the locally compact case. We provide two general classes of groupoids for which the topological full group, as an abstract group, is a complete isomorphism invariant. Hereby extending Matui's Isomorphism Theorem. As an application, we study graph groupoids and their topological full groups, and obtain sharper results for this class. The machinery developed in this process is used to prove an embedding theorem for ample groupoids, ak…
To a Boolean inverse monoid $S$ we associate a universal C*-algebra $C_B^*(S)$ and show that it is equal to Exel's tight C*-algebra of $S$. We then show that any invariant mean on $S$ (in the sense of Kudryavtseva, Lawson, Lenz and Resende) gives rise to a trace on $C_B^*(S)$, and vice-versa, under a condition on $S$ equivalent to the underlying groupoid being Hausdorff. Under certain mild conditions, the space of traces of $C_B^*(S)$ is shown to be isomorphic to the space of invariant means of $S$. We then use many known results about traces of C*-algebras to draw conclusions about invariant …
In this article, we realize ultragraph Leavitt path algebras as Steinberg algebras. This realization allows us to use the groupoid approach to obtain structural results about these algebras. Using skew product groupoid, we show that ultragraph Leavitt path algebras are graded von Neumann regular rings. We characterize strongly graded ultragraph Leavitt path algebras and show that every ultragraph Leavitt path algebra is semiprimitive. Moreover, we characterize irreducible representations of ultragraph Leavitt path algebras. We also show that ultragraph Leavitt path algebras can be realized as …
We introduce a graded homology theory for graded étale groupoids. For $\mathbb Z$-graded groupoids, we establish an exact sequence relating the graded zeroth-homology to non-graded one. Specialising to the arbitrary graph groupoids, we prove that the graded zeroth homology group with constant coefficients $\mathbb Z$ is isomorphic to the graded Grothendieck group of the associated Leavitt path algebra. To do this, we consider the diagonal algebra of the Leavitt path algebra of the covering graph of the original graph and construct the group isomorphism directly. Considering the trivial grading…
An ultragraph gives rise to a labelled graph with some particular properties. In this paper we describe the algebras associated to such labelled graphs as groupoid algebras. More precisely, we show that the known groupoid algebra realization of ultragraph C*-algebras is only valid for ultragraphs for which the range of each edge is finite, and we extend this realization to any ultragraph (including ultragraphs with sinks). Using our machinery, we characterize the shift space associated to an ultragraph as the tight spectrum of the inverse semigroup associated to the ultragraph (viewed as a lab…
We study strongly graded groupoids, which are topological groupoids $\mathcal G$ equipped with a continuous, surjective functor $κ: \mathcal G \to Γ$, to a discrete group $Γ$, such that $κ^{-1}(γ)κ^{-1}(δ) = κ^{-1}(γδ)$, for all $γ, δ\in Γ$. We introduce the category of graded $\mathcal G$-sheaves, and prove an analogue of Dade's Theorem: $\mathcal G$ is strongly graded if and only if every graded $\mathcal G$-sheaf is induced by a $\mathcal G_ε$-sheaf. The Steinberg algebra of a graded ample groupoid is graded, and we prove that the algebra is strongly graded if and only if the groupoid is. A…
Given a locally convex space $(\mathcal{A},τ)$ with a Hausdorff locally convex topology $τ$ such that the following maps are continuous; $u \mapsto u^*$ for all $u \in \mathcal{A}$, $x \mapsto x\cdot y$ and $x \mapsto z\cdot x$ for every left and right multipliers of $\mathcal{A}$. In this paper we re-characterized the locally convex partial $*$-algebra $(\mathcal{A}, Γ,\cdot,*,τ)$ arising from these continuous maps in terms of convolution algebra of a Lie groupoid $Γ\rightrightarrows \mathcal{A}$. This is advantageous because the pathologies of the underlying spaces owing to their quantum mec…
We show how to reconstruct a graded ample Hausdorff groupoid with topologically principal neutrally graded component from the ring structure of its graded Steinberg algebra over any commutative integral domain with 1, together with the embedding of the canonical abelian subring of functions supported on the unit space. We deduce that diagonal-preserving ring isomorphism of Leavitt path algebras implies $C^*$-isomorphism of $C^*$-algebras for graphs $E$ and $F$ in which every cycle has an exit.
In this second paper, we study the case of substitution tilings of R^d. The substitution on tiles induces substitutions on the faces of the tiles of all dimensions j=0, ..., d-1. We reconstruct the tiling's equivalence relation in a purely combinatorial way using the AF-relations given by the lower dimensional substitutions. We define a Bratteli multi-diagram B which is made of the Bratteli diagrams B^j, j=0, ..., d, of all those substitutions. The set of infinite paths in B^d is identified with the canonical transversal Xi of the tiling. Any such path has a "border", which is a set of tails i…
We compute the sheaf cohomology of a groupoid built from a local homeomorphism of a locally compact space $X$. In particular, we identify the twists over this groupoid, and its Brauer group. Our calculations refine those made by Kumjian, Muhly, Renault and Williams in the case $X$ is the path space of a graph, and the local homeomorphism is the shift. We also show how the C*-algebra of a twist may be identified with the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra constructed from a certain C*-correspondence.
The author has previously associated to each commutative ring with unit $\Bbbk$ and étale groupoid $\mathscr G$ with locally compact, Hausdorff, totally disconnected unit space a $\Bbbk$-algebra $\Bbbk\mathscr G$. The algebra $\Bbbk\mathscr G$ need not be unital, but it always has local units. The class of groupoid algebras includes group algebras, inverse semigroup algebras and Leavitt path algebras. In this paper we show that the category of unitary $\Bbbk\mathscr G$-modules is equivalent to the category of sheaves of $\Bbbk$-modules over $\mathscr G$. As a consequence we obtain a new proof …
We show that the groupoids of two directed graphs are isomorphic if and only if the two graphs are orbit equivalent by an orbit equivalence that preserves isolated eventually periodic points. We also give a complete description of the (topological) isolated points of the boundary path space of a graph. As a result, we are able to show that the groupoids of two directed graphs with finitely many vertices and no sinks are isomorphic if and only if the two graphs are orbit equivalent, and that the groupoids of the stabilisations of two such graphs are isomorphic if and only if the stabilisations …
Given a $k$-graph $Λ$ we construct a Markov space $M_Λ$, and a collection of $k$ pairwise commuting cellular automata on $M_Λ$, providing for a factorization of Markov's shift. Iterating these maps we obtain an action of ${\mathbb N}^k$ on $M_Λ$ which is then used to form a semidirect product groupoid $M_Λ\rtimes {\mathbb N}^k$. This groupoid turns out to be identical to the path groupoid constructed by Kumjian and Pask, and hence its C*-algebra is isomorphic to the higher rank graph C*-algebra of $Λ$.
The graph groupoids of directed graphs are topologically isomorphic if and only if there is a diagonal-preserving ring *-isomorphism between the Leavitt path algebras.
Let $α= \{ α_g : R_{g^{-1}} \rightarrow R_g \}_{g \in \textrm{mor}(G)}$ be a partial action of a groupoid $G$ on a non-associative ring $R$ and let $S = R \star_α G$ be the associated partial skew groupoid ring. We show that if $α$ is global and unital, then $S$ is left (right) artinian if and only if $R$ is left (right) artinian and $R_g = \{ 0 \},$ for all but finitely many $g \in \textrm{mor}(G)$. We use this result to prove that if $α$ is unital and $R$ is alternative, then $S$ is left (right) artinian if and only if $R$ is left (right) artinian and $R_g = \{ 0 \},$ for all but finitely ma…
We study Steinberg algebras constructed from ample Hausdorff groupoids over commutative integral domains with identity. We reconstruct (graded) groupoids from (graded) Steinberg algebras and use this to characterise when there is a diagonal-preserving (graded) isomorphism between two (graded) Steinberg algebras. We apply this characterisation to groupoids of directed graphs in order to study diagonal-preserving (graded) isomorphisms of Leavitt path algebras and graph $C^*$-algebras.
We consider self-similar actions of groupoids on the path spaces of finite directed graphs, and construct examples of such self-similar actions using a suitable notion of graph automaton. Self-similar groupoid actions have a Cuntz-Pimsner algebra and a Toeplitz algebra, both of which carry natural dynamics lifted from the gauge actions. We study the equilibrium states (the KMS states) on the resulting dynamical systems. Above a critical inverse temperature, the KMS states on the Toeplitz algebra are parametrised by the traces on the full $C^*$-algebra of the groupoid, and we describe a program…
We give conditions for when continuous orbit equivalence of one-sided shift spaces implies flow equivalence of the associated two-sided shift spaces. Using groupoid techniques, we prove that this is always the case for shifts of finite type. This generalises a result of Matsumoto and Matui from the irreducible to the general case. We also prove that a pair of one-sided shift spaces of finite type are continuously orbit equivalent if and only if their groupoids are isomorphic, and that the corresponding two-sided shifts are flow equivalent if and only if the groupoids are stably isomorphic. As …
Kaplansky introduced the notions of CCR and GCR $C^*$-algebras because they have a tractable representation theory. Many years later, he introduced the notions of CCR and GCR rings. In this paper we characterize when the algebra of an ample groupoid over a field is CCR and GCR. The results turn out to be exact analogues of the corresponding characterization of locally compact groupoids with CCR and GCR $C^*$-algebras. As a consequence, we classify the CCR and GCR Leavitt path algebras.
