We introduce the notion of a \emph{conic sequence} of a convex polytope. It is a way of building up a polytope starting from a vertex and attaching faces one by one with certain regulations. We apply this to a toric variety to obtain an iterated cofibration structure on it. This allows us to prove several vanishing results in the rational cohomology of a toric variety and to calculate Poincaré polynomials for a large class of singular toric varieties.
Some projective wonderful models for the complement of a toric arrangement in a n-dimensional algebraic torus T were constructed in [3]. In this paper we describe their integer cohomology rings by generators and relations.
We compute the cohomology rings of smooth real toric varieties and of real toric spaces, which are quotients of real moment-angle complexes by freely acting subgroups of the ambient 2-torus. The differential graded algebra we present is in fact an equivariant dga model, valid for arbitrary coefficients. We deduce from our description that smooth toric varieties are M-varieties.
We investigate the equivariant intersection cohomology of a toric variety. Considering the defining fan of the variety as a finite topological space with the subfans being the open sets (that corresponds to the "toric" topology given by the invariant open subsets), equivariant intersection cohomology provides a sheaf (of graded modules over a sheaf of graded rings) on that "fan space". We prove that this sheaf is a "minimal extension sheaf", i.e., that it satisfies three relatively simple axioms which are known to characterize such a sheaf up to isomorphism. In the verification of the second o…
We find families of graphs $G$ and subgraphs $H$ of $G$ such that the number of edge colorings of $G$ avoiding a monochromatic coloring of $H$ is determined by lattice point counts or a Hodge structure on the cohomology of a certain toric variety. In general, this gives a class of ``anti-Ramsey theory problems'' with a geometric structure. For example, we find one for Ramsey numbers of classes of such graphs. The key observation is that our previous result expressing simplicial chromatic polynomials in terms of $h$-vectors of auxiliary simplicial complexes can be reinterpreted as one on edge c…
Topologically, compact toric varieties can be constructed as identification spaces: they are quotients of the product of a compact torus and the order complex of the fan. We give a detailed proof of this fact, extend it to the non-compact case and draw several, mostly cohomological conclusions. In particular, we show that the equivariant integral cohomology of a toric variety can be described in terms of piecewise polynomials on the fan if the ordinary integral cohomology is concentrated in even degrees. This generalizes a result of Bahri-Franz-Ray to the non-compact case. We also investigate …
In this paper we find monomial bases for the integer cohomology rings of compact wonderful models of toric arrangements. In the description of the monomials various combinatorial objects come into play: building sets, nested sets, and the fan of a suitable toric variety. We provide some examples computed via a SageMath program and then we focus on the case of the toric arrangements associated with root systems of type A. Here the combinatorial description of our basis offers a geometrical point of view on the relation between some Eulerian statistics on the symmetric group.
In this article we study the equivariant elliptic cohomology of complex toric varieties. We prove a partial reconstruction theorem showing that equivariant elliptic cohomology encodes considerable non-trivial information on the equivariant 1-skeleton of a toric variety X (although it stops short of being a complete invariant of its GKM graphs). Elliptic cohomology is supposed to encode higher categorical geometric data, and proposals have been made linking elliptic cocycles to categorified bundles. In particular, contrary to ordinary cohomology and K-theory, elliptic cohomology is expected not…
Let $X_Σ$ be a smooth, not necessarily compact toric variety. We show that a certain complex, defined in terms of the fan $Σ$, computes the integral cohomology of $X_Σ$, including the module structure over the homology of the torus. In some cases we can also give the product. As a corollary we obtain that the cycle map from Chow groups to integral Borel-Moore homology is split injective for smooth toric varieties. Another result is that the differential algebra of singular cochains on the Borel construction of $X_Σ$ is formal.
We compute the cohomology ring of the complement of a toric arrangement with integer coefficients and investigate its dependency from the arrangement's combinatorial data. To this end, we study a morphism of spectral sequences associated to certain combinatorially defined subcomplexes of the toric Salvetti category in the complexified case, and use a technical argument in order to extend the results to full generality. As a byproduct we obtain: -a "combinatorial" version of Brieskorn's lemma in terms of Salvetti complexes of complexified arrangements, -a uniqueness result for realizations of a…
We describe the singular cohomology ring, the K-ring of complex vector bundles, the Chow ring, and the Grothendieck ring of coherent sheaves of the total space of the fibre bundle with base space an irreducible nonsingular complete Noetherian scheme and fibre a nonsingular projective T-toric variety associated to a prinicipal T-bundle over the field of complex numbers.
We prove that the cohomology of the moduli space of morphisms of a fixed finite degree from a smooth projective curve $C$ of genus $g$ to a complete simplicial toric variety $\mathbb{P}(Σ)$, denoted by the rational polyhedral fan $Σ$, stabilizes. As an arithmetic consequence we obtain a resolution of the Batyrev-Manin conjecture for toric varieties over global function fields in all but finitely many characteristics.
The equivariant cohomology of a space with a group action is not only a ring but also an algebra over the cohomology ring of the classifying space of the acting group. We prove that toric manifolds (i.e. compact smooth toric varieties) are isomorphic as varieties if and only if their equivariant cohomology algebras are weakly isomorphic. We also prove that quasitoric manifolds, which can be thought of as a topological counterpart to toric manifolds, are equivariantly homeomorphic if and only if their equivariant cohomology algebras are isomorphic.
A real toric space is a topological space which admits a well-behaved $\mathbb{Z}_2^k$-action. Real moment-angle complexes and real toric varieties are typical examples of real toric spaces. A real toric space is determined by a pair of a simplicial complex $K$ and a characteristic matrix $Λ$. In this paper, we provide an explicit $R$-cohomology ring formula of a real toric space in terms of $K$ and $Λ$, where $R$ is a commutative ring with unity in which $2$ is a unit. Interestingly, it has a natural $(\mathbb{Z} \oplus \operatorname*{row} Λ)$-grading. As corollaries, we compute the cohomolog…
The simplicial wedge construction on simplicial complexes and simple polytopes has been used by a variety of authors to study toric and related spaces, including non-singular toric varieties, toric manifolds, intersections of quadrics and more generally, polyhedral products. In this paper we extend the analysis to include toric orbifolds. Our main results yield infinite families of toric orbifolds, derived from a given one, whose integral cohomology is free of torsion and is concentrated in even degrees, a property which might be termed \emph{integrally equivariantly formal}. In all cases, it …
In this paper, we do the two things. 1. We present a formula to compute the rational cohomology ring of a real topological toric manifold, and thus that of a small cover or a real toric manifold, which implies the formula of Suciu and Trevisan. Furthermore, the formula also works for other coefficient $\mathbb{Z}_q = \mathbb{Z}/q\mathbb{Z}$, where $q$ is a positive odd integer. 2. We construct infinitely many real toric manifolds and small covers whose integral cohomology have a $q$-torsion for any positive odd integer $q$.
We give an explicit presentation for the integral cohomology ring of the complement of any arrangement of level sets of characters in a complex torus (alias "toric arrangement"). Our description parallels the one given by Orlik and Solomon for arrangements of hyperplanes, and builds on De Concini and Procesi's work on the rational cohomology of unimodular toric arrangements. As a byproduct we extend Dupont's rational formality result to formality over $\mathbb Z$. The data needed in order to state the presentation is fully encoded in the poset of connected components of intersections of the ar…
Given a root system, the Weyl chambers in the co-weight lattice give rise to a real toric variety, called the real toric variety associated to the Weyl chambers. We compute the integral cohomology groups of real toric varieties associated to the Weyl chambers of type $C_n$ and $D_n$, completing the computation for all classical types.
A good contact toric manifold $M$ is determined by its moment cone $C$. We compute the equivariant cohomology ring with $\Z$ coefficient of $M$ in terms of the combinatorial data of $C$. Then under a smoothness criterion on the cone $C$, we compute the singular cohomology ring with $\Z$ coefficient of $M$ in terms of the combinatorial data of $C$.
We continue the approach toward a purely combinatorial "virtual" intersection cohomology for possibly non-rational fans, based on our investigation of equivariant intersection cohomology for toric varieties (see math.AG/9904159). Fundamental objects of study are "minimal extension sheaves" on "fan spaces". These are flabby sheaves of graded modules over a sheaf of polynomial rings, satisfying three relatively simple axioms that characterize the properties of the equivariant intersection cohomology sheaf on a toric variety, endowed with the finite topology given by open invariant subsets. These…
We show that the integral cohomology algebra of the complement of a toric arrangement is not determined by the poset of layers. Moreover, the rational cohomology algebra is not determined by the arithmetic matroid (however it is determined by the poset of layers).
A referee found an error in the proof of the Theorem 2 that we could not fix. More precisely, the proof of Lemma 2.1 is incorrect. Hence the fact that integer cohomology of complement of toric Weyl arrangements is torsion free is still a conjecture. ----- A toric arrangement is a finite set of hypersurfaces in a complex torus, every hypersurface being the kernel of a character. In the present paper we prove that if $\Cal T_{\wdt W}$ is the toric arrangement defined by the \textit{cocharacters} lattice of a Weyl group $\wdt W$, then the integer cohomology of its complement is torsion free.
The cohomological rigidity problem for toric manifolds asks whether toric manifolds are diffeomorphic (or homeomorphic) if their integral cohomology rings are isomorphic. Many affirmative partial solutions to the problem have been obtained and no counterexample is known. In this paper, we study the diffeomorphism classification of toric Fano $d$-folds with $d=3,4$ or with Picard number $\ge 2d-2$. In particular, we show that those manifolds except for two toric Fano $4$-folds are diffeomorphic if their integral cohomology rings are isomorphic. The exceptional two toric Fano $4$-folds (their ID…
A toric origami manifold is a generalization of a symplectic toric manifold (or a toric symplectic manifold). The origami symplectic form is allowed to degenerate in a good controllable way in contrast to the usual symplectic form. It is widely known that symplectic toric manifolds are encoded by Delzant polytopes, and the cohomology and equivariant cohomology rings of a symplectic toric manifold can be described in terms of the corresponding polytope. Recently, Holm and Pires described the cohomology of a toric origami manifold $M$ in terms of the orbit space $M/T$ when $M$ is orientable and …
In this paper we build an Orlik-Solomon model for the canonical gradation of the cohomology algebra with integer coefficients of the complement of a toric arrangement. We give some results on the uniqueness of the representation of arithmetic matroids, in order to discuss how the Orlik-Solomon model depends on the poset of layers. The analysis of discriminantal toric arrangements permits us to isolate certain conditions under which two toric arrangements have diffeomorphic complements. We also give combinatorial conditions determining whether the cohomology algebra is generated in degree one.
We examine the integral cohomology rings of certain families of $2n$-dimensional orbifolds $X$ that are equipped with a well-behaved action of the $n$-dimensional real torus. These orbifolds arise from two distinct but closely related combinatorial sources, namely from characteristic pairs $(Q,λ)$, where $Q$ is a simple convex $n$-polytope and $λ$ a labelling of its facets, and from $n$-dimensional fans $Σ$. In the literature, they are referred as toric orbifolds and singular toric varieties respectively. Our first main result provides combinatorial conditions on $(Q,λ)$ or on $Σ$ which ensure…
Let $W$ be a reflection group in a plane and $P$ a rational polygon that is invariant under the $W$-action. The action of $W$ on $P$ induces a $W$-action on the toric variety $X_P$ associated with $P$. In this paper, we study the $W$-representation on the cohomology $H^\ast(X_P)$ and show that the invariant subring $H^\ast(X_P)^W$ is isomorphic to the cohomology ring of the toric variety associated with the \emph{fundamental region}~$P/W$. As an example, we provide an explicit description of the main result for the case of the toric variety associated with the fan of Weyl chambers of type $G_2…
Given a root system $Φ$ of type $A_n$, $B_n$, $C_n$, or $D_n$ in Euclidean space $E$, let $W$ be the associated Weyl group. For a point $p \in E$ not orthogonal to any of the roots in $Φ$, we consider the $W$-permutohedron $P_W$, which is the convex hull of the $W$-orbit of $p$. The representation of $W$ on the rational cohomology ring $H^\ast(X_Φ)$ of the toric variety $X_Φ$ associated to (the normal fan to) $P_W$ has been studied by various authors. Let $\{s_1,\ldots,s_n\}$ be a complete set of simple reflections in $W$. For $K \subseteq [n]$, let $W_K$ be the standard parabolic subgroup of …
The CW structure of certain spaces, such as effective orbifolds, can be too complicated for computational purposes. In this paper we use the concept of $\mathbf{q}$-CW complex structure on an orbifold, to detect torsion in its integral cohomology. The main result can be applied to well known classes of orbifolds or algebraic varieties having orbifold singularities, such as toric orbifolds, simplicial toric varieties, torus orbifolds and weighted Grassmannians.
Given an arrangement of subtori of arbitrary codimension in a torus, we compute the cohomology groups of the complement. Then, using the Leray spectral sequence, we describe the multiplicative structure on the graded cohomology. We also provide a differential model for the cohomology ring by considering a toric wonderful model and its Morgan algebra. Finally we focus on the divisorial case, proving a new presentation for the cohomology of toric arrangements.
This is an extended abstract for a talk given at the mini-workshop "Cohomology rings and fundamental groups of hyperplane arrangements, wonderful compactifications, and real toric varieties", held in Oberwolfach, September 30-October 6, 2012. We describe a formula (obtained in joint work with Alvise Trevisan) for computing the Betti numbers of real toric manifolds, based on a study of cohomology with coefficients in rank one local systems for various polyhedral products. Applying this formula, we recover Henderson's computation of the Betti numbers of real Hessenberg varieties. We conclude wit…
We study certain foliated complex manifolds that behave similarly to complete nonsingular toric varieties. We classify them by combinatorial objects that we call marked fans. We describe the basic cohomology algebras of them in terms of corresponding marked fans. We also study the basic Dolbeault cohomology algebras of them.
For a simplicial complex $K$ with $m$ vertices, there is a canonical $\mathbb Z_2^m$-space known as a real moment angle complex $\mathbb R \mathcal Z_K$. In this paper, we consider the quotient spaces $Y=\mathbb R \mathcal Z_K / \mathbb Z_2^{k}$, where $K$ is a pure shellable complex and $\mathbb Z_2^k \subset \mathbb Z_2^m$ is a maximal free action on $\mathbb R \mathcal Z_K$. A typical example of such spaces is a small cover, where a small cover is known as a topological analog of a real toric manifold. We compute the integral cohomology group of $Y$ by using the PL cell decomposition obtain…
Let $X$ be a $4$-dimensional toric orbifold. If $H^3(X)$ has a non-trivial odd primary torsion, then we show that $X$ is homotopy equivalent to the wedge of a Moore space and a CW-complex. As a corollary, given two 4-dimensional toric orbifolds having no 2-torsion in the cohomology, we prove that they have the same homotopy type if and only their integral cohomology rings are isomorphic.
Let $X$ be a complete $\Q$-factorial toric variety of dimension $n$ and $\del$ the fan in a lattice $N$ associated to $X$. For each cone $σ$ of $\del$ there corresponds an orbit closure $V(σ)$ of the action of complex torus on $X$. The homology classes $\{[V(σ)]\mid \dim σ=k\}$ form a set of specified generators of $H_{n-k}(X,\Q)$. It is shown that, given $α\in H_{n-k}(X,\Q)$, there is a canonical way to express $α$ as a linear combination of the $[V(σ)]$ with coefficients in the field of rational functions of degree $0$ on the Grassmann manifold of $(n-k+1)$-planes in $N_\Q$. This generalizes…
Suppose $\Cal R$ is the complement of an essential arrangement of toric hyperlanes in the complex torus $(\C^*)^n$ and $π=π_1(\Cal R)$. We show that $H^*(\Cal R;A)$ vanishes except in the top degree $n$ when $A$ is one of the following systems of local coefficients: (a) a system of nonresonant coefficients in a complex line bundle, (b) the von Neumann algebra $\cnπ$, or (c) the group ring $\zz π$. In case (a) the dimension of $H^n$ is $|e(\Cal R)|$ where $e(\Cal R)$ denotes the Euler characteristic, and in case (b) the $n^{\mathrm{th}}$ $\eltwo$ Betti number is also $|e(\Cal R)|$.
Every cohomology ring isomorphism between two non-singular complete toric varieties and quasitoric manifolds, respectively, with second Betti number $2$ is realizable by a diffeomorphism and homeomorphism, respectively.
