We present a first-principles investigation of the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of pyrolusite ($β$-MnO$_2$) using conventional and extended Hubbard-corrected density-functional theory (DFT+$U$ and DFT+$U$+$V$). The onsite $U$ and intersite $V$ Hubbard parameters are computed using linear-response theory in the framework of density-functional perturbation theory. We show that while the inclusion of the onsite $U$ is crucial to describe the localized nature of the Mn($3d$) states, the intersite $V$ is key to capture accurately the strong hybridization between neighboring Mn($3d$) and O($2p$) states. In this framework, we stabilize the simplified collinear antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering (suggested by the Goodenough-Kanamori rule) that is commonly used as an approximation to the experimentally-observed noncollinear screw-type spiral magnetic ordering. A detailed investigation of the ferromagnetic and of other three collinear AFM spin configurations is also presented. The findings from Hubbard-corrected DFT are discussed using two kinds of Hubbard manifolds - nonorthogonalized and orthogonalized atomic orbitals - showing that special attention must be given to the choice of the Hubbard projectors, with orthogonalized manifolds providing more accurate results than nonorthogonalized ones within DFT+$U$+$V$. This work paves the way for future studies of complex transition-metal compounds containing strongly localized electrons in the presence of pronounced covalent interactions.
We present a first-principles investigation of the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of the pristine and Fe-doped $α$-MnO$_2$ using density-functional theory with extended Hubbard functionals. The onsite $U$ and intersite $V$ Hubbard parameters are determined from first principles and self-consistently using density-functional perturbation theory in the basis of Löwdin-orthogonalized atomic orbitals. For the pristine $α$-MnO$_2$ we find that the so-called C2-AFM spin configuration is the most energetically favorable, in agreement with the experimentally observed antiferromagnetic…
Halide perovskites (HPs) are widely viewed as promising photovoltaic and light-emitting materials for their suitable band gaps in the visible spectrum. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations employing (semi)local exchange-correlation functionals usually underestimate the band gaps for these systems. Accurate descriptions of the electronic structures of HPs often demand higher-order levels of theory such as the Heyd-Scuseria-Ernzerhof (HSE) hybrid density functional and GW approximations that are much more computationally expensive than standard DFT. Here, we investigate three representat…
The design of novel cathode materials for Li-ion batteries would greatly benefit from accurate first-principles predictions of structural, electronic, and magnetic properties as well as intercalation voltages in compounds containing transition-metal elements. For such systems, density-functional theory (DFT) with standard (semi-)local exchange-correlation functionals is of limited use as it often fails due to strong self-interaction errors that are especially relevant in the partially filled $d$ shells. Here, we perform a detailed comparative study of the phospho-olivine cathode materials Li$_…
Monolayer MnO$_2$ is one of the few predicted two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnets that has been experimentally synthesized and is commercially available. The Mermin-Wagner theorem states that magnetic order in a 2D material cannot persist unless magnetic anisotropy (MA) is present and perpendicular to the plane, which permits a finite critical temperature. Previous computational studies have predicted the magnetic ordering and Curie temperature of 2D MnO$_2$ with DFT+U (Density Funtional Theory + Hubbard U correction), with the results having a strong dependence on the Hubbard U parameter. Diffu…
We present a new approach based on the static density functional theory (DFT) to describe paramagentic MnO, which is a representative paramagnetic Mott insulator. We appended the spin noncollinearity and the canonical ensemble to the magnetic sampling method (MSM), which is one of the supercell approaches based on disordered local moment model. The combination of the noncollinear MSM (NCMSM) with DFT$+U$ represents a highly favorable computational method called NCMSM$+U$ to accurately determine the paramagnetic properties of MnO with moderate numerical cost. The effects of electron correlation…

Density functional theory (DFT) calculations are used to study the magnetic and ferroelectric properties of Sr$_{1-x}$Ba$_{x}$MnO$_3$, with focus on $x=0.5$, under isotropic volume expansion/compression and biaxial strain. Our results indicate that, unexpectedly, Ba substitution alters the electronic structure in a way that, at fixed lattice parameter, notably enhances the interatomic magnetic exchange interactions. However, increasing Ba-content also causes a volume expansion which tends to weaken these interactions, leading to a net effect of weakly suppressed magnetism, as observed in exper…
Rotations and distortions of oxygen octahedra in perovskites play a key role in determining their functional properties. Here we investigate how octahedral rotations can couple from one material to another in La$_{2/3}$Sr$_{1/3}$MnO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ epitaxial heterostructures by first principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations, emphasizing the important differences between systems oriented perpendicular to the (111)- and (001)-facets. We find that the coupling length of out-of-phase octahedral rotations is independent of the crystalline facet, pointing towards a steric effect. Howeve…

Lattice distortion due to octahedral rotation and distortion are high focussed, and it produces profound effect on a material's properties, such as its bandgap, magnetism and optical properties etc. Rutile-type \b{eta}-MnO2 is a wide used non-Perovskite magnetic material with octahedrons. We systematically studied its stability, electronic structures, magnetic structures, and optical properties within 0-100 GPa with density-functional theory (DFT). We find that the competition between bondlength and bonding angle leads its bandgap enlarging or shrinking within in the Pnnm phase with increasing…

A systematic comparative study has been performed to better understand DFT$+U$ (density functional theory + $U$) method. We examine the effect of choosing different double counting and exchange-correlation functionals. The calculated energy distribution and the Hund-$J$ dependence of potential profile for representative configurations clearly show the different behaviors of each DFT$+U$ formalism. In particular, adopting spin-dependent exchange-correlation functionals likely leads to undesirable magnetic solution. Our analyses are further highlighted by real material examples ranging from insu…
The relative energetic stability of the structural phases of common antiferromagnetic transition-metal oxides (MnO, FeO, CoO, and NiO) within the semilocal and hybrid density functionals are fraught with difficulties. In particular, MnO is known to be the most difficult case for almost all common semilocal and hybrid density approximations. Here, we show that the meta-generalized gradient approximation (meta-GGA) constructed from the cuspless hydrogen model and Pauli kinetic energy density (MGGAC) can lead to the correct ground state of MnO. The relative energy differences of zinc-blende (zb) …
We discuss the application of the Agapito Curtarolo and Buongiorno Nardelli (ACBN0) pseudo-hybrid Hubbard density functional to several transition metal oxides. ACBN0 is a fast, accurate and parameter-free alternative to traditional DFT+$U$ and hybrid exact exchange methods. In ACBN0, the Hubbard energy of DFT+$U$ is calculated via the direct evaluation of the local Coulomb and exchange integrals in which the screening of the bare Coulomb potential is accounted for by a renormalization of the density matrix. We demonstrate the success of the ACBN0 approach for the electronic properties of a se…
The Random Phase Approximation (RPA) for total energies has previously been shown to provide a qualitatively correct description of static correlation in molecular systems, where density functional theory (DFT) with local functionals are bound to fail. This immediately poses the question of whether the RPA is also able to capture the correct physics of strongly correlated solids such as Mott insulators. Due to strong electron localization, magnetic interactions in such systems are dominated by superexchange, which in the simplest picture can be regarded as the analogue of static correlation fo…
Late transition-metal oxides with small charge-transfer energy $Δ$ raise issues for state-of-the-art correlated electronic structure schemes such as the combination of density functional theory (DFT) with dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). The accentuated role of the oxygen valence orbitals in these compounds asks for an enhanced description of ligand-based correlations. Utilizing the rocksalt-like NiO as an example, we present an advancement of charge self-consistent DFT+DMFT by including self-interaction correction (SIC) applied to oxygen. This introduces explicit onsite O correlations as w…
