Density functional theory (DFT) calculations are used to study the magnetic and ferroelectric properties of Sr$_{1-x}$Ba$_{x}$MnO$_3$, with focus on $x=0.5$, under isotropic volume expansion/compression and biaxial strain. Our results indicate that, unexpectedly, Ba substitution alters the electronic structure in a way that, at fixed lattice parameter, notably enhances the interatomic magnetic exchange interactions. However, increasing Ba-content also causes a volume expansion which tends to weaken these interactions, leading to a net effect of weakly suppressed magnetism, as observed in experiments. The ferroelectric properties, on the other hand, are found to be less affected by changes in the electronic structure and can largely be understood in terms of the volume expansion caused by Ba-substitution. The calculated electric polarization as a function of biaxial strain in Sr$_{1-x}$Ba$_{x}$MnO$_3$ for $x=0$ and $x=0.5$, shows that the difference between the two is mainly due to differences in the magnetic order at certain strain values, accompanied by enormous magnetoelectric coupling.
Structural, magnetic and ferromagnetic resonance characterization studies have been performed on lay-ered ferromagnetic-ferroelectric oxides that show strong magnetoelectric coupling. The samples contained thick films of ferrites or substituted lanthanum manganites for the ferromagnetic phase and lead zirconate titanate for the ferroelectric phase, and were sintered high temperatures. Results indicate defect free ferrites, but deterioration of manganite parameters due to diffusion at the interface and accounts for poor magnetoelectric coupling in manganite-PZT samples.
We investigate the crystal structure in multiferroic tetragonal perovskite Sr$_{1/2}$Ba$_{1/2}$MnO$_3$ with high accuracy of the order of 10$^{-3}$ Angstrom for an atomic displacement. The large atomic displacement for Mn ion from the centerosymmetric position, comparable with the off-centering distortion in the tetragonal ferroelectric BaTiO$_3$, is observed in the ferroelectric phase ($T_\mathrm{N}$ $\leq$ $T$ $\leq$ $T_\mathrm{C}$). In stark contrast, in the multiferroic phase ($T$ $\leq$ $T_\mathrm{N}$), the atomic displacement for Mn ion is suppressed, but those for O ions are enlarged. T…
An emerging area in condensed matter physics is the use of multilayered heterostructures to enhance ferroelectricity in complex oxides. Here, we demonstrate that optically pumping carriers across the interface between thin films of a ferroelectric (FE) insulator and a ferromagnetic metal can significantly enhance the FE polarization. The photoinduced FE state remains stable at low temperatures for over one day. This occurs through screening of the internal electric field by the photoexcited carriers, leading to a larger, more stable polarization state that may be suitable for applications in a…
A broad continuum-like spin excitation (1--10 meV) with a peak structure around 2.4 meV has been observed in the ferroelectric $ab$ spiral spin phase of Gd$_{0.7}$Tb$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ by using terahertz (THz) time-domain spectroscopy. Based on a complete set of light-polarization measurements, we identify the spin excitation active for the light $E$ vector only along the a-axis, which grows in intensity with lowering temperature even from above the magnetic ordering temperature but disappears upon the transition to the $A$-type antiferromagnetic phase. Such an electric-dipole active spin excitati…

We present results of a density functional theory study of MnO in the wurtzite structure. Our motivation is provided by recent experiments reporting ferromagnetism in Mn-doped wurtzite structure ZnO. We find that wurtzite MnO a) is not strongly energetically disfavored as compared with the ground state rocksalt MnO, b) shows strong magnetostructural coupling and c) has a piezoelectric response that is larger than that of ZnO. These predictions augur well for the creation of ferromagnetic piezoelectric semiconductor based on Mn-doped ZnO.
Density functional theory calculations are used to investigate a-MnO2, a structure containing a framework of corner and edge sharing MnO6 octahedra with tunnels in between. Placing K+ ions into the tunnels stabilizes a-MnO2 with respect to the rutile-structure b-MnO2 phase, in agreement with experiment. The computed magnetic structure has antiferromagnetic (ferromagnetic) Mn-Mn interactions between corner-sharing (edge-sharing) octahedra. Pure a-MnO2 is found to be a semiconductor with an indirect band gap of 1.3 eV. Water and related hydrides (OH-; H3O+) can also be accommodated in the tunnel…
Efficient method for magnetic structure exploration based on first-principles calculations: application to MnO and hexagonal ferrites SrFe$_{12}$O$_{19}$
We report the occurrence of both \emph{ab} and \emph{bc} cycloidal ordering of Mn-spins at different temperatures and their possible coexistence at low temperatures in the polycrystalline mixed rare-earth compounds, \emph{R}$_{0.5}$Dy$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$ (\emph{R} = Eu and Gd), which exhibit extraordinary magnetoelectric properties. While the polarization of Gd$_{0.5}$Dy$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$ is comparable to TbMnO$_3$, the compound Eu$_{0.5}$Dy$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$ shows high value of polarization. However, both of them show giant magnetic tunability and exhibit large magnetocapacitance whose sign changes acro…
Investigating the Electromechanical Behavior of Unconventionally Ferroelectric $Hf_{0.5}Zr_{0.5}O_{2}$-based Capacitors Through Operando Nanobeam X-ray Diffraction
We use ab initio electronic structure calculations in combination with Monte Carlo simulations to investigate the magnetic and ferroelectric properties of bulk orthorhombic HoMnO$_3$ and ErMnO$_3$. Our goals are to explain the inconsistencies in the measured magnetic properties of the orthorhombic perovskite manganites (o-$R$MnO$_3$) with small rare-earth ($R$) cations or Y, as well as the contradictions between the directions and amplitudes of the electric polarizations reported by different experimental groups. Our computations stabilize several exotic magnetic orders (so-called w-spiral, H-…
Oxygen ion migration in Li2MnO3 was systematically studied by first-principles calculations. Hole polaron is found effective to lower the migration barrier of oxygen ion.
With a combined ab initio density functional and model Hamiltonian approach we establish that in the recently discovered multiferroic phase of the manganite Sr$_{1/2}$Ba$_{1/2}$MnO$_{3}$ the polar distortion of Mn and O ions is stabilized via enhanced in-plane Mn-O hybridizations. The magnetic superexchange interaction is very sensitive to the polar bond-bending distortion, and we find that this dependence directly causes a strong magnetoelectric coupling. This novel mechanism for multiferroicity is consistent with the experimentally observed reduced ferroelectric polarization upon the onset o…
We studied for the first time the magnetic phase diagram of the rare-earth manganites series Gd$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$MnO$_{3}$ (GCMO) over the full concentration range based on density functional theory. GCMO has been shown to form solid solutions. We take into account this disordered character by adapting special quasi random structures at different concentration steps. The magnetic phase diagram is mainly described by means of the magnetic exchange interactions between the Mn sites and Monte Carlo simulations were performed to estimate the corresponding transition temperatures. They agree very wel…
Ab initio calculations of the electric polarization of correlation-driven insulating materials, namely Mott insulators, have not been possible so far. Using a combination of density functional theory and dynamical-mean-field theory we study the electric polarization of the Mott insulator Sr$_{0.5}$Ba$_{0.5}$MnO$_{3}$. We predict a ferroelectric polarization of $\simeq 16.5 μC/cm^2$ in the high temperature paramagnetic phase and recover the measured value of $\simeq 13.3 μC/cm^2$ in the low temperature antiferromagnetic phase. Our calculations reveal that the driving force for the ferroelectric…
Lattice distortion due to octahedral rotation and distortion are high focussed, and it produces profound effect on a material's properties, such as its bandgap, magnetism and optical properties etc. Rutile-type \b{eta}-MnO2 is a wide used non-Perovskite magnetic material with octahedrons. We systematically studied its stability, electronic structures, magnetic structures, and optical properties within 0-100 GPa with density-functional theory (DFT). We find that the competition between bondlength and bonding angle leads its bandgap enlarging or shrinking within in the Pnnm phase with increasing…
Superlattices composed of ferromagnetics, namely La$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ (LCMO), and ferroelectrics, namely, BaTiO$_3$(BTO) were grown on SrTiO$_3$ at 720$^o$C by pulsed laser deposition process. While the out-of-plane lattice parameters of the superlattices, as extracted from the X-ray diffraction studies, were found to be dependent on the BTO layer thickness, the in-plane lattice parameter is almost constant. The evolution of the strains, their nature, and their distribution in the samples, were examined by the conventional sin$^2ψ$ method. The effects of structural variation on the phys…
The aim of this Chapter is to provide an account of recent advances in the first-principles modeling of ferroelectric oxide nanostructures. Starting from a microscopic description of ferroelectricity in bulk materials and considering then, successively, different kinds of nanostructures (films, multilayers, wires, and particles), we try to identify the main trends and to provide a coherent picture of the role of finite size effects in ferroelectric oxides.
We report on first principles calculations of the electronic structure of La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_{3}$/SrTiO$_{3}$ junction with two possible types of interface terminations. We find that the La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$O/TiO$_{2}$ interface preserves the interlayer ferromagnetic coupling between the interface MnO$_{2}$ layer and the bulk. The other interface, MnO$_{2}$/SrO, favours antiferromagnetic coupling with the bulk. By inserting two unit cells of undoped LaMnO$_{3}$ at the interface the ferromagnetism is recovered. This is understood in terms of the doping level and the mobility of carriers n…
We present a first-principles investigation of the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of pyrolusite ($β$-MnO$_2$) using conventional and extended Hubbard-corrected density-functional theory (DFT+$U$ and DFT+$U$+$V$). The onsite $U$ and intersite $V$ Hubbard parameters are computed using linear-response theory in the framework of density-functional perturbation theory. We show that while the inclusion of the onsite $U$ is crucial to describe the localized nature of the Mn($3d$) states, the intersite $V$ is key to capture accurately the strong hybridization between neighboring Mn($3…
We performed first principles calculations for epitaxially strained orthorhombic CaTiO$_3$. The computational results reveal the existence of a metastable ferroelectric phase at compressive strain with unexpected in-plane polarization. Symmetry analysis indicates that two distortion modes at the X point combine to induce the polarization, leading to characterization as a hybrid improper ferroelectric. Our work demonstrates a mechanism for improper ferroelectricity in simple perovskites without the need for symmetry lowering by layering or cation ordering.
A key to optimizing the growth of the new single-crystal relaxor ferroelectrics is resolving basic questions concerning their structural properties and energetics. We report on initial first-principles total energy and force calculations, examining the energetics of local order in PZN type relaxors.
We have studied ferroelectricity in Dion-Jacobson CsBiNb$_2$O$_7$ from first principles. Using group-theoretical analysis and first-principles density functional calculations of the total energy and phonons, we perform a systematic study of the energy surface around a paraelectric prototypic phase. Our results suggest that CsBiNb$_2$O$_7$ is a ferroelectric with a polarization of P$_s$=40$μ$C cm$^{-2}$. We propose further experiments to clarify this point.
We review the role that first-principles calculations have played in understanding the effects of substrate-imposed misfit strain on epitaxially grown perovskite ferroelectric films. We do so by analyzing the case of BaTiO$_3$, complementing our previous publications on this subject with unpublished data to help explain in detail how these calculations are done. We also review similar studies in the literature for other perovskite ferroelectric-film materials.
Using first-principles density-functional calculations, we address the magnetic properties of the ferromagnet/antiferromagnet La(0.67)Sr(0.33)MnO3/BiFeO3(001) heterojunctions, and investigate possible driving mechanisms for a ferromagnetic (FM) interfacial ordering of the Fe spins recently observed experimentally. We find that the chemically abrupt defect-free La(0.67)Sr(0.33)MnO3/BiFeO3(001) heterojunction displays, as ground state, an ordering with compensated Fe spins. Cation Fe/Mn intermixing at the interface tends to favour, instead, a FM interfacial order of the Fe spins, coupled antifer…
Using first-principles calculations, we estimated the impact of large applied electric E fields on the structural, dielectric, and ferroelectric properties of typical ferroelectrics. At large fields, the structural parameters change significantly, decreasing the strain between the different structural phases. This effect favours a polarization rotation model for ferroelectric switching in which the electronic polarization rotates between the directions of tetragonal, rhombohedral and orthorhombic phases. We estimate coercive fields E_c ~31 MV/m and ~52 MV/m at zero temperature for bulk ferroel…
We have studied ab initio the phase transition in PbZrO3, a perovskite oxide usually presented as the prototypic anti-ferroelectric material. Our work reveals the crucial role that anti-ferrodistortive modes -- involving concerted rotations of the oxygen octahedra in the structure -- play in the transformation, as they select the observed anti-ferroelectric phase, among competing structural variants, via a cooperative trilinear coupling.
A newly developed fast molecular-dynamics method is applied to BaTiO3 ferroelectric thin-film capacitors with short-circuited electrodes or under applied voltage. The molecular-dynamics simulations based on a first-principles effective Hamiltonian clarify that dead layers (or passive layers) between ferroelectrics and electrodes markedly affect the properties of capacitors, and predict that the system is unable to hop between a uniformly polarized ferroelectric structure and a striped ferroelectric domain structure at low temperatures. Simulations of hysteresis loops of thin-film capacitors ar…
By means of first-principles simulations, we unambiguously show that improper ferroelectricity in magnetite in the low-temperature insulating phase is driven by charge-ordering. An accurate comparison between monoclinic ferroelectric Cc and paraelectric P2/c structures shows that the polarization arises because of "shifts" of electronic charge between octahedral Fe sites, leading to a non-centrosymmetric Fe2+/Fe3+ charge-ordered pattern. Our predicted values for polarization, in good agreement with available experimental values, are discussed in terms of point-charge dipoles located on selecte…
A first-principles-based model is developed to investigate the influence of lead vacancies on the properties of relaxor ferroelectric Pb(Sc1/2Nb1/2)O3 (PSN). Lead vacancies generate large, inhomogeneous, electric fields that reduce barriers between energy minima for different polarization directions. This naturally explains why relaxors with significant lead vacancy concentrations have broadened dielectric peaks at lower temperatures, and why lead vacancies smear properties in the neighborhood of the ferroelectric transition in PSN. We also reconsider the conventional wisdom that lead vacancie…
We elucidate the microscopic mechanism that causes a suppression of ferroelectricity and an enhancement of octahedral rotations in EuTiO3 from first principles. We find that the hybridization of the rare-earth Eu 4f states with the B-site Ti cation drives the system away from ferroelectricity. We also show that the magnetic order dependence of this hybridization is the dominant source of spin-phonon coupling in this material. Our results underline the importance of rare-earth f electrons on the lattice dynamics and stability of these transition metal oxides.
In this review, we propose a summary of the most recent advances in the first-principles study of ferroelectric oxide epitaxial thin films and multilayers. We discuss in detail the key roles of mechanical and electrical boundary conditions, providing to the reader the basic background for a simple and intuitive understanding of the evolution of the ferroelectric properties in many nanostructures. Going further we also highlight promising new avenues and future challenges within this exciting field or researches.
We performed first - principles relativistic full-potential linearized augmented plane wave calculations for strained tetragonal ferromagnetic La(Ba)MnO$_3$ with an assumed experimental structure of thin strained tetragonal La$_{0.67}$Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_3$ (LCMO) films grown on SrTiO$_3$[001] and LaAlO$_3$[001] substrates. The calculated uniaxial magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) values, are in good quantitative agreement with experiment for LCMO films on SrTiO$_3$ substrate. We also analyze the applicability of linear magnetoelastic theory for describing the stain dependence of MAE, and estimate …
The ferroelectric trends of rutile (TiO$_2$) in bulk and at the (110) surface are investigated by means of ab initio density functional theory. We discuss the underlying mechanism of the incipient ferroelectric behavior of rutile in terms of Born effective charges, which we decompose in individual contributions by means of maximally localized Wannier functions. We show that a ferroelectric phase can be stabilized for a variety of different lattice distortions which all enlarge the shortest Ti-O distance, even if the longer apical Ti-O bond is simultaneously shortened. At the (110) surface, the…
We have studied the structural phase transition of multiferroic YMnO$_3$ from first principles. Using group-theoretical analysis and first-principles density functional calculations of the total energy and phonons, we perform a systematic study of the energy surface around the prototypic phase. We find a single instability at the zone-boundary which couples strongly to the polarization. This coupling is the mechanism that allows multiferroicity in this class of materials. Our results imply that YMnO$_3$ is an improper ferroelectric. We suggest further experiments to clarify this point.
The ground state structural, electronic and magnetic properties of multiferroic TbMn$_2$O$_5$ are investigated via first-principles calculations. We show that the ferroelectricity in TbMn$_2$O$_5$ is driven by the non-centrosymmetric magnetic ordering, without invoking the spin-orbit coupling and non-collinear spins. The {\it intrinsic} electric polarization in this compound is calculated to be 1187 $nC\cdot$ cm$^{-2}$, an order of magnitude larger than previously thought.
We report a first-principles study of (BaTiO${_3}$)$_m$/(BaO)$_n$ superlattices for a wide range of periodicities $m/n$. We show that such a system develops a polar zone-center instability for sufficiently large \textit{m}/\textit{n} ratio, which can be understood, at least qualitatively, from a simple electrostatic model and should lead to a ferroelectric ground-state. However, the analysis of the phonon dispersion curves also points out the appearance of stronger antiferroelectric instabilities at the zone boundaries around $m=4$, before the critical ratio for ferroelectricity is reached and…
The structure and polarization of the as-yet hypothetical Ruddlesden-Popper compound Pb$_2$TiO$_4$ are investigated within density-functional theory. Zone enter phonons of the high-symmetry K$_2$NiF$_4$-type reference structure, space group $I4/mmm$, were calculated. At the theoretical ground-state lattice constants, there is one unstable infrared-active phonon. This phonon freezes in to give the $I2mm$ ferroelectric state. As a function of epitaxial strain, two additional ferroelectric phases are found, with space groups $I4mm$ and $F2mm$ at compressive and tensile strains, respectively.
First principles calculations are used to investigate the effects of epitaxial strain on the structure of the perovskite oxide CaTiO$_3$, with particular focus on the stabilization of a ferroelectric phase related to a polar instability hidden in the orthorhombic equilibrium bulk $Pbnm$ structure but found in previous first-principles studies of the ideal cubic perovskite high-symmetry reference structure. At 1.5% strain, we find an epitaxial orientation transition between the $ab$-$ePbnm$ phase, favored for compressive strains, and the $c$-$ePbnm$ phase. For larger tensile strains, a polar in…
Ferroelectric domain walls are boundaries between regions with different polarization orientations in a ferroelectric material. Using first principles calculations, we characterize all different types of domain walls forming on ($11\bar{1}$), ($111$) and ($1\bar{1}0$) crystallographic planes in thermoelectric GeTe. We find large structural distortions in the vicinity of most of these domain walls, which are driven by polarization variations. We show that such strong strain-order parameter coupling will considerably reduce the lattice thermal conductivity of GeTe samples containing domain walls…
Based on the first-principles calculations, we investigated the ferroelectric properties of two-dimensional (2D) Group-IV tellurides XTe (X=Si, Ge and Sn), with a focus on GeTe. 2D Group-IV tellurides energetically prefer an orthorhombic phase with a hinge-like structure and an in-plane spontaneous polarization. The intrinsic Curie temperature Tc of monolayer GeTe is as high as 570 K and can be raised quickly by applying a tensile strain. An out-of-plane electric field can effectively decrease the coercive field for the reversal of polarization, extending its potential for regulating the polar…

Density functional calculations are performed to study the effect of epitaxial strain on PbZrO3. We find a remarkably small energy difference between the epitaxially strained polar R3c and nonpolar Pbam structures over the full range of experimentally accessible epitaxial strains -3% < η< 4%. While ferroelectricity is favored for all compressive strains, for tensile strains the small energy difference between the nonpolar ground state and the alternative polar phase yields a robust antiferroelectric ground state. The coexistence of ferroelectricity and antiferroelectricity observed in thin fil…
We present a method to compute the electrooptic tensor from first principles, explicitly taking into account the electronic, ionic and piezoelectric contributions. It allows us to study the non-linear optic behavior of three ferroelectric ABO_3 compounds : LiNbO_3, BaTiO_3 and PbTiO_3. Our calculations reveal the dominant contribution of the soft mode to the electrooptic coefficients in LiNbO_3 and BaTiO_3 and identify the coupling between the electric field and the polar atomic displacements along the B-O chains as the origin of the large electrooptic response in these compounds.
In order to better understand the reconstructive ferroelectric-paraelectric transition of Bi2WO6, which is unusual within the Aurivillius family of compounds, we performed first principles calculations of the dielectric and dynamical properties on two possible high-temperature paraelectic structures: the monoclinic phase of A2/m symmetry observed experimentally and the tetragonal phase of I4/mmm symmetry, common to most Aurivillius phase components. Both paraelectric structures exhibits various unstable modes, which after their condensation bring the system toward more stable structures of low…
Localized Wannier functions provide an efficient and intuitive framework to compute electric polarization from first-principles. They can also be used to represent the electronic systems at fixed electric field and to determine dielectric properties of insulating materials. Here we develop a Wannier-function-based formalism to perform first-principles calculations at fixed polarization. Such an approach allows to extract the polarization-energy landscape of a crystal and thus supports the theoretical investigation of polar materials. To facilitate the calculations, we implement a quasi-Newton …
We use a combination of symmetry analysis and high-throughput density functional theory calculations to search for new ferroelectric materials. We use two search strategies to identify candidate materials. In the first strategy, we start with non-polar materials and look for unrecognized energy-lowering polar distortions. In the second strategy, we consider polar materials and look for related higher symmetry structures. In both cases, if we find new structures with the correct symmetries that are also close in energy to experimentally known structures, then the material is likely to be switch…
In this communication we present a first principle study of Pr$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$MnO$_3$ with $x = 0.25$. While the parent compounds of this system are antiferromagnetic insulators with different structural and magnetic ground states, the $x = 0.25$ is in the colossal magnetoresistance regime of the Pr$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$MnO$_3$ phase diagram [C. Martin, A. Maignan, M. Hervieu, B. Raveau, Phys. Rev. B 60 (1999) 12191]. Our band structure calculations for the end-point compounds matches well with the existing theoretical and experimental results [C. Martin, A. Maignan, M. Hervieu, B. Raveau, Phys. Rev…
Ba(Zr,Ti)O$_3$ is a lead-free relaxor ferroelectric. Using the first-principles method, the ferroelectric dipole moments for pure BaTiO$_3$ and Ba(Zr,Ti)O$_3$ supercells have been studied. All possible ion configurations of BaZr$_{0.5}$Ti$_{0.5}$O$_3$ and BaZr$_{0.25}$Ti$_{0.75}$O$_3$ are constructed in a $2\times2\times2$ supercell. For the half-substituted case, divergence of ferroelectric properties has been found among these structures, which seriously depends on the arrangement of Ti and Zr ions. Thus our results provide a reasonable explanation to the relaxor behavior of Ba(Zr,Ti)O$_3$. …
A series of superlattices composed of ferromagnetic La$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ (LCMO) and ferroelectric/paraelectric Ba$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$TiO$_3$ (0$\leq $x$\leq $1) were deposited on SrTiO$_3$ substrates using the pulsed laser deposition. Films of epitaxial nature comprised of spherical mounds having uniform size are obtained. Magnetotransport properties of the films reveal a ferromagnetic Curie temperature in the range of 145-158 K and negative magnetoresistance as high as 30%, depending on the type of ferroelectric layers employed for their growth (\QTR{it}{i.e.} '\QTR{it}{x'} value). Ferroelec…
Molecular ferroelectrics have attracted increasing interests over the past decade due to mechanical flexibility, chemical diversity, environmental friendliness, easy-processing, and lightness. The performance of molecular ferroelectrics is approaching more and more competitive to their inorganic counterparts. Despite the chemical diversity and tunability of the molecular cations or anions, molecular ferroelectrics are not abundant. In particular, physical directed design principles for new discovery or performance optimization are still lacking. Here, through first-principles calculations, we …
A method for the calculation of the temperature dependence of dielectric and piezoelectric responses, based on the use of a first-principles effective Hamiltonian, is described. Results are presented for the ferroelectric perovskite PbTiO3. While the method includes only the soft-mode contributions to the responses, it is argued to give a good description of the divergences or near-divergences of the response functions near the cubic-tetragonal transition. The expression of the response functions in terms of correlation functions is used to provide a real-space interpretation of the responses …
