We investigate the null geodesic flow and in particular the light rings (LRs), fundamental photon orbits (FPOs) and shadows of a black hole (BH) immersed in a strong, uniform magnetic field, described by the Schwarzschilld-Melvin electrovacuum solution. The empty Melvin magnetic Universe contains a tube of planar LRs. Including a BH, for weak magnetic fields, the shadow becomes oblate, whereas the intrinsic horizon geometry becomes prolate. For strong magnetic fields (over-critical solutions), there are no LRs outside the BH horizon, a result explained using topological arguments. This feature, together with the light confining structure of the Melvin Universe yields \textit{panoramic shadows}, seen (almost) all around the equator of the observer's sky. Despite the lack of LRs, there are FPOs, including polar planar ones, which define the shadow edge. We also observe and discuss chaotic lensing, including in the empty Melvin Universe, and multiple disconnected shadows.
In this work, taking the QED effect into account, we investigate the shadows of the Kerr black holes immersed in uniform magnetic fields through the numerical backward ray-tracing method. We introduce a dimensionless parameter $Λ$ to characterize the strength of magnetic fields and studied the influence of magnetic fields on the Kerr black hole shadows for various spins of the black holes and inclination angles of the observers. In particular, we find that the photon "hairs" appear near the left edge of the shadow in the presence of magnetic fields. The photon hairs may be served as a signatur…

Supermassive black hole (BH) binaries are thought to produce self-lensing flares (SLF) when the two BHs are aligned with the line-of-sight. If the binary orbit is observed nearly edge-on, we find a distinct feature in the light curve imprinted by the BH shadow from the lensed BH. We study this feature by ray-tracing in a binary model and predict that 1\% of the current binary candidates could show this feature. Our BH tomography method proposed here could make it possible to extract BH shadows that are spatially unresolvable by high-resolution VLBI.
In this work, we consider a rotating charged black hole surrounded by perfect fluid dark matter. We consider the system to be immersed in non-magnetised, pressureless plasma. First, we evaluate the null geodesics in order to study the co-rotating and counter rotating photon orbits. Further, we analyse the null geodesics to calculate the celestial coordinates ($α, β$). The celestial coordinates are used to determine the black hole shadow radius ($R_s$). Thereafter, we observe and analyse the effects of black hole spacetime, perfect fluid dark matter and plasma parameters ($a$, $Q$, $χ$, $k$) on…
We investigate the gravitational lensing by spinning Proca stars and the shadows and lensing by Kerr black holes (BHs) with synchronised Proca hair, discussing both theoretical aspects and observational constraints from the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) M87* and Sgr A* data. On the theoretical side, this family of BHs interpolates between Kerr-like solutions -- exhibiting a similar optical appearance to that of Kerr BHs -- to very non-Kerr like solutions, exhibiting exotic features such as cuspy shadows, egg-like shadows and ghost shadows. We interpret these features in terms of the structure …
We study weak gravitational lensing around a compact object with arbitrary quadrupole moment in the presence of plasma. The studied compact objects are considered to be spherically symmetric. The additional parameter $ε$ regulating the quadrupole moment in the metric alters the deflection angle of light rays along with the plasma parameters. In the vacuum, the number of images due to the presence of the parameter $ε$ increases and causes the increase of the magnification of the image source. The effects of uniform and nonuniform plasma on gravitational lensing around the compact object are als…

Motivated by (i) more and more interest in strong gravitational lensing by supermassive black holes due to the achievement of EHT observations, (ii) the ongoing popular topic on the possibility of Lorentz symmetry being broken in gravitation and its consequences, we will apply the Einstein bumblebee gravity with Lorentz violation (LV) to the study of strong gravitational lensing effect and the black hole shadow of slowly rotating Kerr-like black hole. In the strong gravitational lensing sector, we first calculate the deflection angel; then treating the slowly rotating Kerr-like black hole as s…
The problem of bending and scattering of light rays passing outside from the entrance to a wormhole with zero gravitational mass is considered. The process of ray capture by a wormhole as well as the process of formation of a shadow when illuminated by a standard screen is investigated. These mechanisms are also compared to the case of motion of light rays in the vicinity of the Schwarzschild black hole.
In this work, we study the shadow of Born-Infeld (BI) black holes with magnetic monopoles and Schwarzschild black holes immersed in the BI uniform magnetic field. Illuminated by a celestial sphere, black hole images are obtained by using the backward ray-tracing method. For magnetically charged BI black holes, we find that the shadow radius increases with the increase of nonlinear electromagnetics effects. For Schwarzschild black holes immersed in the BI uniform magnetic field, photons tend to move towards the axis of symmetric, resulting in stretched shadows along the equatorial plane.
The light rings (LRs) topological charge (TC) of a spacetime measures the number of stable LRs minus the number of unstable LRs. It is invariant under smooth spacetime deformations obeying fixed boundary conditions. Asymptotically flat equilibrium black holes (BHs) have, generically, TC=$-1$. In Einstein-Maxwell theory, however, the Schwarzschild-Melvin BH - describing a neutral BH immersed in a strong magnetic field - has TC$=0$. This allows the existence of BHs without LRs and produces remarkable phenomenological features, like panoramic shadows. Here we investigate the generalised Schwarzsc…
We calculate the photon sphere $r_{ph}$ and critical curve $b_c$ for the quantum corrected Schwarzschild black hole, finding that they violate an universal inequalities proved for asymptotically flat black holes which satisfy null energy condition in the framework of Einstein gravity. This violation seem to be a common phenomenon when considering quantum modification of Einstein gravity. Furthermore, we study the shadows, lensing rings and photon rings in the quantum corrected Schwarzschild black hole. The violation leads to a larger bright lensing ring in the observational appearance of thin …
For ultra compact objects (UCOs), Light Rings (LRs) and Fundamental Photon Orbits (FPOs) play a pivotal role in the theoretical analysis of strong gravitational lensing effects, and of BH shadows in particular. In this short review, specific models are considered to illustrate how FPOs can be useful in order to understand some non-trivial gravitational lensing effects. This paper aims at briefly overviewing the theoretical foundations of these effects, touching also some of the related phenomenology, both in General Relativity (GR) and alternative theories of gravity, hopefully providing some …
The presence of a bright "photon ring" surrounding a dark "black hole shadow" has been discussed as an important feature of the observational appearance of emission originating near a black hole. We clarify the meaning and relevance of these heuristics with analytic calculations and numerical toy models. The standard usage of the term "shadow" describes the appearance of a black hole illuminated from all directions, including from behind the observer. A backlit black hole casts a somewhat larger shadow. Neither shadow heuristic is particularly relevant to understanding the appearance of emissi…
We study the strong gravitational lensing effect around rotating black holes in different gravity theories. By calculating the deflection angle of strong gravitational lensing, we evaluate the lensing observables including the image position, separation, magnification and the time delays between the relativistic images of different rotating black holes. We argue that the differences in image positions, separations between the rotating black hole in modified gravity (MOG) theory and the Kerr black hole in general relativity (GR) are more significant in SgrA* than those in M87*, however the diff…
We have studied numerically the shadows of Bonnor black dihole through the technique of backward ray-tracing. The presence of magnetic dipole yields non-integrable photon motion, which affects sharply the shadow of the compact object. Our results show that there exists a critical value for the shadow. As the magnetic dipole parameter is less than the critical value, the shadow is a black disk, but as the magnetic dipole parameter is larger than the critical one, the shadow becomes a concave disk with eyebrows possessing a self-similar fractal structure. These behavior are very similar to those…
In this article, we present an overview of the new developments in problems of the plasma influence on the effects of gravitational lensing, complemented by pieces of new material and relevant discussions. Deflection of light in the presence of gravity and plasma is determined by a complex combination of various physical phenomena: gravity, dispersion, refraction. In particular, the gravitational deflection itself, in a homogeneous plasma without refraction, differs from the vacuum one and depends on the frequency of the photon. In an inhomogeneous plasma, chromatic refraction also takes place…
Null Geodesics, Thermodynamics, Weak Gravitational Lensing, and Black Hole Shadow Characteristics of a Frolov Regular Black Hole with Constraints from EHT Observations
Using backwards ray tracing, we study the shadows of Kerr black holes with scalar hair (KBHsSH). KBHsSH interpolate continuously between Kerr BHs and boson stars (BSs), so we start by investigating the lensing of light due to BSs. Moving from the weak to the strong gravity region, BSs - which by themselves have no shadows - are classified, according to the lensing produced, as: $(i)$ non-compact, which yield no multiple images; $(ii)$ compact, which produce an increasing number of Einstein rings and multiple images of the whole celestial sphere; $(iii)$ ultra-compact, which possess light rings…
In this paper, we first analyze the horizon structure of the Van der Waals(VdW) black hole and then investigate its shadow in the absence of a plasma medium as well as the presence of a homogeneous plasma medium. We find that both the Van der Waals parameters $a$ and $b$ have a significant effect on the shadow of the black hole. We also observe that the radius of the shadow in a homogeneous plasma medium decreases while parameter $σ=\frac{ω_p}{ω_{\infty}}$ ( the ratio of plasma frequency and photon frequency) increases and the radius of the shadow inhomogeneous plasma medium is larger than the…
There is an exciting prospect of obtaining the shadow of astrophysical black holes (BHs) in the near future with the Event Horizon Telescope. As a matter of principle, this justifies asking how much one can learn about the BH horizon itself from such a measurement. Since the shadow is determined by a set of special photon orbits, rather than horizon properties, it is possible that different horizon geometries yield similar shadows. One may then ask how sensitive is the shadow to details of the horizon geometry? As a case study, we consider the double Schwarzschild BH and analyse the impact on …
The null geodesics of the regular and rotating magnetically charged black hole in a non-minimally coupled Einstein-Yang-Mills theory surrounded by a plasma medium is studied. The effect of magnetic charge and Yang-Mills parameter on the effective potential and radius of photon orbits has investigated. We then study the shadow of a regular and rotating magnetically charged black hole along with the observables in presence of the plasma medium. The presence of plasma medium affects the apparent size of the shadow of a regular rotating black hole in comparison to vacuum case. Variation of shadow …
Gravitational waves (GW), as light, are gravitationally lensed by intervening matter, deflecting their trajectories, delaying their arrival and occasionally producing multiple images. In theories beyond general relativity (GR), new gravitational degrees of freedom add an extra layer of complexity and richness to GW lensing. We develop a formalism to compute GW propagation beyond GR over general space-times, including kinetic interactions with new fields. Our framework relies on identifying the dynamical propagation eigenstates (linear combinations of the metric and additional fields) at leadin…
In this paper, we study the influence of the axion-plasmon, as proposed in (Phys. Rev. Lett. 120, 181803 (2018)) on the optical properties of the Schwarzschild black hole. Our aim is to provide a test to detect the effects of a fixed axion background using black holes. To accomplish our goal, we explore the effect of the axion-plasmon coupling on the motion of photons around the Schwarzschild black hole and check the possibility of observing those effects upon the black hole shadow, the gravitational deflection angle, Einstein rings and shadow images obtained by radially infalling gas on a bla…
