We consider the stability of fragile topological bands protected by space-time inversion symmetry in the presence of strong electron-electron interactions. At the single-particle level, the topological nature of the bands prevents the opening of a gap between them. In contrast, we show that when the fragile bands are half filled, interactions can open a gap in the many-body spectrum without breaking any symmetry or mixing degrees of freedom from remote bands. Furthermore, the resulting ground state is not topologically ordered. Thus, a fragile topological band structure does not present an obstruction to forming a "featureless insulator" ground state. Our construction relies on the formation of fermionic bound states of two electrons and one hole, known as "trions". The trions form a band whose coupling to the electronic band enables the gap opening. This result may be relevant to the gapped state indicated by recent experiments in magic angle twisted bilayer graphene at charge neutrality.
Topological nodal superconductors possess gapless low energy excitations that are characterized by point or line nodal Fermi surfaces. In this work, using a coupled wire construction, we study topological nodal superconductors that have protected Dirac nodal points. In this construction, the low-energy electronic degrees of freedom are confined in a three dimensional array of wires, which emerge as pairing vortices of a microscopic superconducting system. The vortex array harbors an antiferromagnetic time-reversal and a mirror glide symmetry that protect the massless Dirac fermion in the singl…
We introduce the concept of boundary degeneracy of topologically ordered states on a compact orientable spatial manifold with boundaries, and emphasize that the boundary degeneracy provides richer information than the bulk degeneracy. Beyond the bulk-edge correspondence, we find the ground state degeneracy of the fully gapped edge modes depends on boundary gapping conditions. By associating different types of boundary gapping conditions as different ways of particle or quasiparticle condensations on the boundary, we develop an analytic theory of gapped boundaries. By Chern-Simons theory, this …
Topological phases of matter are defined by their nontrivial patterns of ground-state quantum entanglement, which is irremovable so long as the excitation gap and the protecting symmetries, if any, are maintained. Recent studies on noninteracting electrons in crystals have unveiled a peculiar variety of topological phases, which harbors nontrivial entanglement that can be dissolved simply by the the addition of entanglement-free, but charged, degrees of freedom. Such topological phases have a weaker sense of robustness than their conventional counterparts, and are therefore dubbed "fragile top…
We study the effects of electronic correlations on fragile topology using dynamical mean-field theory. Fragile topological insulators (FTIs) offer obstruction to the formation of exponentially localized Wannier functions, but they can be trivialized by adding certain trivial degrees of freedom. For the same reason, FTIs do not host symmetry-protected flow of edge states between bulk bands in cylindrical boundary conditions but are expected to have a spectral flow between the fragile bands and other bands under certain twisted boundary conditions. We here analyze commonly observed effects of st…
We present a series of models of three-dimensional rotation-symmetric fragile topological insulators in class AI (time-reversal symmetric and spin-orbit-free systems), which have gapless surface states protected by time-reversal ($T$) and $n$-fold rotation ($C_n$) symmetries ($n=2,4,6$). Our models are generalizations of Fu's model of a spinless topological crystalline insulator, in which orbital degrees of freedom play the role of pseudo-spins. We consider minimal surface Hamiltonian with $C_n$ symmetry in class AI and discuss possible symmetry-protected gapless surface states, i.e., a quadra…
A fragile topological insulator (FTI) can be viewed as an almost-atomic insulator, with emergent negative charges localized at certain real space points, even though the underlying lattice Hilbert space contains only positively charged states. Fragile topology in free fermion systems has been fruitfully studied using modern topological band theory. However, the concept is well defined even for strongly correlated systems, and fragile states that cannot be realized within free fermion band theory exist abundantly. In this work we propose a rather general parton construction for such correlation…
We extend the notion of fragile topology to periodically-driven systems. We demonstrate driving-induced fragile topology in two different models, namely, the Floquet honeycomb model and the Floquet $π$-flux square-lattice model. In both cases, we discover a rich phase diagram that includes Floquet fragile topological phases protected by crystalline rotation or mirror symmetries, Floquet Chern insulators, and trivial atomic phases, with distinct boundary features. Remarkably, the transitions between different phases can be feasibly achieved by simply tuning the driving amplitudes, which is a un…
In flat bands, superconductivity can lead to surprising transport effects. The superfluid "mobility", in the form of the superfluid weight $D_s$, does not draw from the curvature of the band but has a purely band-geometric origin. In a mean-field description, a non-zero Chern number or fragile topology sets a lower bound for $D_s$, which, via the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless mechanism, might explain the relatively high superconducting transition temperature measured in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG). For fragile topology, relevant for the bilayer system, the fate of this bound…
The fundamental building blocks in band theory are band representations (BRs): bands whose infinitely-numbered Wannier functions are generated (by action of a space group) from a finite number of symmetric Wannier functions centered on a point in space. This work aims to simplify questions on a multi-rank BR by splitting it into unit-rank bands, via the following crystallographic splitting theorem: being a rank-$N$ BR is equivalent to being splittable into a finite sum of bands indexed by $\{1,2,\ldots,N\}$, such that each band is spanned by a single, analytic Bloch function of $k$, and any sy…
We show that the Wannier obstruction and the fragile topology of the nearly flat bands in twisted bilayer graphene at magic angle are manifestations of the nontrivial topology of two-dimensional real wave functions characterized by the Euler class. To prove this, we examine the generic band topology of two dimensional real fermions in systems with space-time inversion $I_{ST}$ symmetry. The Euler class is an integer topological invariant classifying real two band systems. We show that a two-band system with a nonzero Euler class cannot have an $I_{ST}$-symmetric Wannier representation. Moreove…
Topological phases, such as Chern insulators, are defined in terms of additive indices that are stable against the addition of trivial degrees of freedom. Such topology presents an obstruction to any Wannier representation, namely, the representation of the electronic states in terms of symmetric, exponentially localized Wannier functions. Here, we address the converse question: Do obstructions to Wannier representation imply stable band topology? We answer this in the negative, pointing out that some bands can also display a distinct type of "fragile topology." Bands with fragile topology do …
We study surface zero-energy flat bands in three-dimensional chiral superconductors with $p_z (p_x +ip_y)^ν$-wave pairing symmetry ($ν$ is a nonzero integer), based on topological numbers and tunneling conductance. It is shown that the surface flat bands are fragile against (i) the misorientation angle and (ii) surface Rashba spin-orbit interaction. The fragility of (i) is specific to chiral SCs, whereas that of (ii) happens for general odd-parity SCs. We demonstrate that these flat band instabilities vanish or suppress a zero-bias conductance peak in a normal/insulator/superconductor junction…
A non-perturbative lattice regularization of chiral fermions and bosons with anomaly-free symmetry $G$ in 1+1D spacetime is proposed. More precisely, we ask "whether there is a local short-range quantum Hamiltonian with a finite Hilbert space for a finite system realizing onsite symmetry $G$ defined on a 1D spatial lattice, such that its low energy physics produces a 1+1D anomaly-free chiral matter theory of symmetry $G$?" In particular, we propose that the 3$_L$-5$_R$-4$_L$-0$_R$ U(1) chiral fermion theory, with two left-moving fermions of charge-3 and 4, and two right-moving fermions of char…
Topological band theory predicts a $\mathbb{Z}$ classification of three-dimensional (3D) Dirac semimetals (DSMs) at the single-particle level. Namely, an arbitrary number of identical bulk Dirac nodes will always remain locally stable and gapless in the single-particle band spectrum, as long as the protecting symmetry is preserved. In this work, we find that this single-particle classification for $C_n$-symmetric DSMs will break down to $\mathbb{Z}_{n/\text{gcd}(2,n)}$ in the presence of symmetry-preserving electron interactions. Our theory is based on a dimensional reduction strategy which re…
Twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) provides a unique framework to elucidate the interplay between strong correlations and topological phenomena in two-dimensional systems. The existence of multiple electronic degrees of freedom -- charge, spin, and valley -- gives rise to a plethora of possible ordered states and instabilities. Identifying which of them are realized in the regime of strong correlations is fundamental to shed light on the nature of the superconducting and correlated insulating states observed in the TBG experiments. Here, we use unbiased, sign-problem-free quantum Monte Carlo simul…
We consider ferromagnetic instabilities of two-dimensional helical Dirac fermions hosted on the surface of three-dimensional topological insulators. We investigate ways to increase the role of interactions by means of modifying the bulk properties which in turn changes both the surface Dirac theory and the screening of interactions. We discuss both the long-ranged part of the Coulomb interactions controlled by the dimensionless coupling constant $α= e^{2}/(\hbar εv_{F}^{\mathrm{surf}})$ as well as the effects of local interactions parametrized by the ratio $U_{\mathrm{surf}}/D_{\mathrm{surf}}$…
Recently it was shown that the topological properties of $2D$ and $3D$ topological insulators are captured by a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ chiral anomaly in the boundary field theory. It remained, however, unclear whether the anomaly survives electron-electron interactions. We show that this is indeed the case, thereby providing an alternative formalism for treating topological insulators in the interacting regime. We apply this formalism to fractional topological insulators (FTI) via projective/parton constructions and use it to test the robustness of all fractional topological insulators which can be de…
Despite recent extensive studies of the non-Hermitian topology, understanding interaction effects is left as a crucial question. In this paper, we address interaction effects on exceptional points which are protected by the non-trivial point-gap topology unique to non-Hermitian systems. Our analysis in a two-dimensional parameter space elucidates the existence of exceptional points and symmetry-protected exceptional rings fragile against interactions; they are topologically protected only in non-interacting cases. This fragility of exceptional points and symmetry-protected exceptional rings ar…
Crystalline topological phases have recently attracted a lot of experimental and theoretical attention. Key advances include the complete elementary band representation analyses of crystalline matter by symmetry indicators and the discovery of higher-order hinge and corner states. However, current classification schemes of such phases are either implicit or limited in scope. We present a new scheme for the explicit classification of crystalline topological insulators and superconductors. These phases are protected by crystallographic point group symmetries and are characterized by bulk topolog…
In a flat band superconductor, bosonic excitations can disperse while unpaired electrons are immobile. To study this strongly interacting system, we construct a family of multi-band Hubbard models with exact eta-pairing ground states in all space groups. We analytically compute their many-body excitations and find that the Cooper pair bound states and density excitations obey an effective single-particle Hamiltonian written in terms of the non-interacting wavefunctions. These bound states possess a unique zero-energy excitation whose quadratic dispersion is determined by the minimal quantum me…
We study the realizations of topological defects in 1d quantum Ising model with open boundary condition at criticality. Applying the construction discussed in [M. Hauru, G. Evenbly, W. W. Ho, D. Gaiotto, and G. Vidal, Phys. Rev. B 94, 115125 (2016)], we prove that the Ising model on an open chain with multiple topological defects can be transformed to the same model with boundary magnetic fields and noninteracting boundary degrees of freedom. This results in the appearance of linear combination of Cardy states [J. L. Cardy, Nucl. Phys. B 324, 581 (1989)], which can be interpreted as an edge st…
Modeling the spin-triplet superconductor Sr2RuO4 through a three-orbital tight-binding model we investigate topological properties and edge states assuming chiral p-wave pairing. In concordance with experiments the three Fermi surfaces consist of two electron-like and one hole-like one corresponding to the alpha-, beta- and gamma-band on the level of a two-dimensional system. The quasi-particle spectra and other physical quantities of the superconducting phase are calculated by means of a self-consistent Bogoliubov-de Gennes approach for a ribbon shaped system. While a full quasiparticle excit…
We discuss a general diagnosis scheme for topological nodal lines protected by time-reversal symmetry and space-inversion symmetry, in the absence of spin-orbit coupling. It is shown that when a shallow band inversion (with a small inverted gap) appears at the $Γ$-point in the Brillouin zone, nodal lines are generated along with the inversion. Much information on the types and numbers of these nodal lines can be related to the rotation eigenvalues and inversion eigenvalues of the inverted bands. In addition, we establish a $\mathbb{Z}$-type monopole charge for nodal lines with fourfold or sixf…
