We study the realizations of topological defects in 1d quantum Ising model with open boundary condition at criticality. Applying the construction discussed in [M. Hauru, G. Evenbly, W. W. Ho, D. Gaiotto, and G. Vidal, Phys. Rev. B 94, 115125 (2016)], we prove that the Ising model on an open chain with multiple topological defects can be transformed to the same model with boundary magnetic fields and noninteracting boundary degrees of freedom. This results in the appearance of linear combination of Cardy states [J. L. Cardy, Nucl. Phys. B 324, 581 (1989)], which can be interpreted as an edge state of the spin or fermion chain. We show that this edge state with the large boundary entropy can be protected under bulk perturbation whereas it is fragile to a boundary perturbation. Our formulation suggests an existence of nontrivial edge physics under the existence of topological defects and opens many interesting questions for future analysis related to boundary and bulk physics.
Two defect lines separated by a distance delta look from much larger distances like a single defect. In the critical theory, when all scales are large compared to the cutoff scale, this fusion of defect lines is universal. We calculate the universal fusion rule in the critical 2D Ising model and show that it is given by the Verlinde algebra of primary fields, combined with group multiplication in O(1,1)/Z_2. Fusion is in general singular and requires the subtraction of a divergent Casimir energy.
We study the critical two-dimensional Ising model with a defect line (altered bond strength along a line) in the continuum limit. By folding the system at the defect line, the problem is mapped to a special case of the critical Ashkin-Teller model, the continuum limit of which is the $Z_2$ orbifold of the free boson, with a boundary. Possible boundary states on the $Z_2$ orbifold theory are explored, and a special case is applied to the Ising defect problem. We find the complete spectrum of boundary operators, exact two-point correlation functions and the universal term in the free energy of t…
Recent numerical results point to the existence of a conformally invariant twist defect in the critical 3d Ising model. In this note we show that this fact is supported by both epsilon expansion and conformal bootstrap calculations. We find that our results are in good agreement with the numerical data. We also make new predictions for operator dimensions and OPE coefficients from the bootstrap approach. In the process we derive universal bounds on one-dimensional conformal field theories and conformal line defects.
We investigate the properties of the twist line defect in the critical 3d Ising model using Monte Carlo simulations. In this model the twist line defect is the boundary of a surface of frustrated links or, in a dual description, the Wilson line of the Z2 gauge theory. We test the hypothesis that the twist line defect flows to a conformal line defect at criticality and evaluate numerically the low-lying spectrum of anomalous dimensions of the local operators which live on the defect as well as mixed correlation functions of local operators in the bulk and on the defect.
We study the two-dimensional Ising model with a defect line and evaluate multipoint energy correlation functions using non-perturbative field-theoretical methods. We also discuss the evaluation of the two spin correlator on the defect line.
We obtain an explicit realization of all the primary fields of the Ising model in terms of a conformal field theory of constrained fermions. The four-point correlators of the energy, order and disorder operators are explicitly calculated.
We study superconformal defect lines in the tricritical Ising model in 2 dimensions. By the folding trick, a superconformal defect is mapped to a superconformal boundary of the N=1 superconformal unitary minimal model of c=7/5 with D_6-E_6 modular invariant. It turns out that the complete set of the boundary states of c=7/5 D_6-E_6 model cannot be interpreted as the consistent set of superconformal defects in the tricritical Ising model since it does not contain the "no defect" boundary state. Instead, we find a set of 18 consistent superconformal defects including "no defect" and satisfying t…
In this paper and its sequel, we construct topologically invariant defects in two-dimensional classical lattice models and quantum spin chains. We show how defect lines commute with the transfer matrix/Hamiltonian when they obey the defect commutation relations, cousins of the Yang-Baxter equation. These relations and their solutions can be extended to allow defect lines to branch and fuse, again with properties depending only on topology. In this part I, we focus on the simplest example, the Ising model. We define lattice spin-flip and duality defects and their branching, and prove they are t…
Critical phenomena in the two-dimensional Ising model with a defect line are studied using boundary conformal field theory on the $c=1$ orbifold. Novel features of the boundary states arising from the orbifold structure, including continuously varying boundary critical exponents, are elucidated. New features of the Ising defect problem are obtained including a novel universality class of defect lines and the universal boundary to bulk crossover of the spin correlation function.
We consider two different conformal field theories with central charge c=7/10. One is the diagonal invariant minimal model in which all fields have integer spins; the other is the local fermionic theory with superconformal symmetry in which fields can have half-integer spin. We construct new conformal (but not topological or factorised) defects in the minimal model. We do this by first constructing defects in the fermionic model as boundary conditions in a fermionic theory of central charge c=7/5, using the folding trick as first proposed by Gang and Yamaguchi. We then acting on these with int…
Anyon models can be symmetric under some permutations of their topological charges. One can then conceive topological defects that, under monodromy, transform anyons according to a symmetry. We study the realization of such defects in the toric code model, showing that a process where defects are braided and fused has the same outcome as if they were Ising anyons. These ideas can also be applied in the context of topological codes.
Entanglement entropy~(EE) contains signatures of many universal properties of conformal field theories~(CFTs), especially in the presence of boundaries or defects. In particular, {\it topological} defects are interesting since they reflect internal symmetries of the CFT, and have been extensively analyzed with field-theoretic techniques with striking predictions. So far, however, very few ab-initio, lattice computations of these predictions have been available. Here, we present an ab-initio analysis of EE for the Ising model in the presence of a topological defect. While the behavior of the EE…
We consider the entanglement entropy for the 2D Ising model at the conformal fixed point in the presence of interfaces. More precisely, we investigate the situation where the two subsystems are separated by a defect line that preserves conformal invariance. Using the replica trick, we compute the entanglement entropy between the two subsystems. We observe that the entropy, just like in the case without defects, shows a logarithmic scaling behavior with respect to the size of the system. Here, the prefactor of the logarithm depends on the strength of the defect encoded in the transmission coeff…

The critical 2d classical Ising model on the square lattice has two topological conformal defects: the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry defect $D_ε$ and the Kramers-Wannier duality defect $D_σ$. These two defects implement antiperiodic boundary conditions and a more exotic form of twisted boundary conditions, respectively. On the torus, the partition function $Z_{D}$ of the critical Ising model in the presence of a topological conformal defect $D$ is expressed in terms of the scaling dimensions $Δ_α$ and conformal spins $s_α$ of a distinct set of primary fields (and their descendants, or conformal towe…
The finite-size scaling properties of the quantum Ising chain with different types of generalized defects are studied. These not only mean an alteration of the coupling constant as previously examined, but an additional arbitrary transformation in the algebra of observables at one site of the chain. One can distinguish between two classes of generalized defects: those which do not affect the finite-size integrability of the Ising chain, and on the other hand those that destroy this property. In this context, finite-size integrability is always understood as a synonym for the possibility to wri…
A model describing Ising spins with short range interactions moving randomly in a plane is considered. In the presence of a hard core repulsion, which prevents the Ising spins from overlapping, the model is analogous to a dynamically triangulated Ising model with spins constrained to move on a flat surface. As a function of coupling strength and hard core repulsion the model exhibits multicritical behavior, with first and second order transition lines terminating at a tricritical point. The thermal and magnetic exponents computed at the tricritical point are consistent with the KPZ values asso…

Defects in two-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs) contain signatures of their characteristics. In this work, we compute the entanglement entropy (EE) and the entanglement negativity (EN) of subsystems in the presence of energy and duality defects in the Ising CFT using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) technique. We show that the EE for the duality defect exhibits fundamentally different characteristics compared to the energy defect due to the existence of localized and delocalized zero energy modes. Of special interest is the nontrivial `finite-size correction' in the E…
For all 4d $\mathcal{N} = 4$ SYM theories with simple gauge groups $G$, we show that the residues of the integrands in the $\mathcal{N} = 4$ Schur indices, which are related to Gukov-Witten type surface defects in the theories, equal the vacuum characters of rank$G$ copies of $bc βγ$ systems that provide the free field realization of associated $\mathcal{N} = 4$ VOAs. This result predicts that these residues, as module characters, are additional solutions to the flavored modular differential equations satisfied by the original Schur index. The prediction is verified in the $G = SU(2)$ case, wh…
The global $e$-$m$ exchange symmetry of the toric code is realized locally through an exactly solvable Hamiltonian on a two dimensional lattice which has no lattice dislocations and their associated defect line. The Hamiltonian is still changed locally in selected sites where we wish to realize this anyon symmetry. We refer to these selected sites as defect sites in analogy with the usual lattice defects. The operators on the defect sites condense dyons of the toric code and are shown to support states which obey the fusion rules of Ising anyons just as the lattice dislocations thus achieving …
We consider the broken phase of the n-vector model in n+1 dimensions with boundary conditions enforcing the presence of topological defect lines (Ising domain walls, XY vortex lines, and so on), and use field theory to argue an exact expression for the order parameter.
A recently introduced model describing the folding of the triangular lattice is generalized allowing for defects in the lattice and written as an Ising model with nearest-neighbor and plaquette interactions on the honeycomb lattice. Its phase diagram is determined in the hexagon approximation of the cluster variation method and the crossover from the pure Ising to the pure folding model is investigated, obtaining a quite rich structure with several multicritical points. Our results are in very good agreement with the available exact ones and extend a previous transfer matrix study.
Non-Abelian defects that bind Majorana or parafermion zero modes are prominent in several topological quantum computation schemes. Underpinning their established understanding is the quantum Ising spin chain, which can be recast as a fermionic model or viewed as a standalone effective theory for the surface-code edge -- both of which harbor non-Abelian defects. We generalize these notions by deriving an effective Ising-like spin chain describing the edge of quantum-double topological order. Relating Majorana and parafermion modes to anyonic strings, we introduce quantum-double generalizations …
Starting from the lattice $A_3$ realization of the Ising model defined on a strip with integrable boundary conditions, the exact spectrum (including excited states) of all the local integrals of motion is derived in the continuum limit by means of TBA techniques. It is also possible to follow the massive flow of this spectrum between the UV $c=1/2$ conformal fixed point and the massive IR theory. The UV expression of the eigenstates of such integrals of motion in terms of Virasoro modes is found to have only rational coefficients and their fermionic representation turns out to be simply relate…
We explore topological defects in the 4-dimensional pure $\mathbb{Z}_2$ lattice gauge theory. This theory has 1-form $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ center symmetry as well as the Kramers-Wannier-Wegner (KWW) duality. We construct the KWW duality topological defects in the similar way to that constructed by Aasen, Mong, Fendley arXiv:1601.07185 for the 2-dimensional Ising model. These duality defects turn out to be non-invertible. We also construct the 1-form $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ symmetry defects as well as the junctions among KWW duality defects and 1-form $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ center symmetry defects. The crossing …
The scattering theory of the integrable statistical models can be generalized to the case of systems with extended lines of defect. This is done by adding the reflection and transmission amplitudes for the interactions with the line of inhomegeneity to the scattering amplitudes in the bulk. The factorization condition for the new amplitudes gives rise to a set of Reflection-Transmission equations. The solutions of these equations in the case of diagonal $S$-matrix in the bulk are only those with $S =\pm 1$. The choice $S=-1$ corresponds to the Ising model. We compute the exact expressions of t…
This is the second part of two papers where we study the effect of integrable line defects on bipartite entanglement entropy in integrable field theories. In this paper, we consider non-topological line defects in Ising field theory. We derive an infinite series expression for the entanglement entropy and show that both the UV and IR limits of the bulk entanglement entropy are modified by the line defect. In the UV limit, we give an infinite series expression for the coefficient in front of the logarithmic divergence and the exact defect $g$-function. By tuning the defect to be purely transmis…
We present a Lorentzian inversion formula valid for any defect CFT that extracts the bulk channel CFT data as an analytic function of the spin variable. This result complements the already obtained inversion formula for the corresponding defect channel, and makes it now possible to implement the analytic bootstrap program for defect CFT, by going back and forth between both channels. A crucial role in our derivation is played by the Calogero-Sutherland description of defect blocks which we review. As first applications we obtain the large-spin limit of bulk CFT data necessary to reproduce the …
