We explore topological defects in the 4-dimensional pure $\mathbb{Z}_2$ lattice gauge theory. This theory has 1-form $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ center symmetry as well as the Kramers-Wannier-Wegner (KWW) duality. We construct the KWW duality topological defects in the similar way to that constructed by Aasen, Mong, Fendley arXiv:1601.07185 for the 2-dimensional Ising model. These duality defects turn out to be non-invertible. We also construct the 1-form $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ symmetry defects as well as the junctions among KWW duality defects and 1-form $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ center symmetry defects. The crossing relations among these defects are derived. The expectation values of some configurations of these topological defects are calculated by using these crossing relations.
Nonlinear sigma models appear in a wide variety of physics contexts, such as the long-range order with spontaneously broken continuous global symmetries. There are also large classes of quantum criticality admit sigma model descriptions in their phase diagrams without known ultraviolet complete quantum field theory descriptions. We investigate defects in general nonlinear sigma models in any spacetime dimensions, which include the "electric" defects that are characterized by topological interactions on the defects, and the "magnetic" defects that are characterized by the isometries and homotop…
We study systems with an Adler-Bell-Jackiw anomaly in terms of non-invertible symmetry. We present a new kind of non-invertible charge defect where a key role is played by a local current operator localized on the defect. The charge defects are now labeled by elements of a continuous $U(1)$. We use this construction to prove an analogue of Goldstone's theorem for such non-invertible symmetries. We comment on possible applications to string theory.
For any quantum system invariant under gauging a higher-form global symmetry, we construct a non-invertible topological defect by gauging in only half of spacetime. This generalizes the Kramers-Wannier duality line in 1+1 dimensions to higher spacetime dimensions. We focus on the case of a one-form symmetry in 3+1 dimensions, and determine the fusion rule. From a direct analysis of one-form symmetry protected topological phases, we show that the existence of certain kinds of duality defects is intrinsically incompatible with a trivially gapped phase. We give an explicit realization of this dua…
We study properties of self-duality symmetry in the Cardy-Rabinovici model. The Cardy-Rabinovici model is the $4$d $U(1)$ gauge theory with electric and magnetic matters, and it enjoys the $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ self-duality at low-energies. $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ self-duality does not realize in a naive way, but we notice that the $ST^{p}$ duality transformation becomes the legitimate duality operation by performing the gauging of $\mathbb{Z}_N$ $1$-form symmetry with including the level-$p$ discrete topological term. Due to such complications in its realization, the fusion rule of duality defects be…
We sketch a procedure to capture general non-invertible symmetries of a d-dimensional quantum field theory in the data of a higher-category, which captures the local properties of topological defects associated to the symmetries. We also discuss fusions of topological defects, which involve condensations/gaugings of higher-categorical symmetries localized on the worldvolumes of topological defects. Recently some fusions of topological defects were discussed in the literature where the dimension of topological defects seems to jump under fusion. This is not possible in the standard description …
We study non-invertible global symmetries in $(3+1)$-dimensional axion electrodynamics with a massless axion and a massless photon. In addition to a previously known non-invertible 0-form shift symmetry of the axion, we find a non-invertible 1-form symmetry associated with the equation of motion for the photon. Correlation functions of non-invertible symmetry defects lead to invertible 1- and 2-form symmetry defects associated with Bianchi identities for the axion and photon. In terms of the correlation functions, we discuss several phenomena for extended objects, such as induced fractional el…

We elucidate the fate of classical symmetries which suffer from abelian Adler-Bell-Jackiw anomalies. Instead of being completely destroyed, these symmetries survive as non-invertible topological global symmetry defects with worldvolume anyon degrees of freedom that couple to the bulk through a magnetic one-form global symmetry as in the fractional hall effect. These non-invertible chiral symmetries imply selection rules on correlation functions and arise in familiar models of massless quantum electrodynamics and models of axions (as well as their non-abelian generalizations). When the associat…
We introduce a class of non-invertible topological defects in (3+1)d gauge theories whose fusion rules are the higher-dimensional analogs of those of the Kramers-Wannier defect in the (1+1)d critical Ising model. As in the lower-dimensional case, the presence of such non-invertible defects implies self-duality under a particular gauging of their discrete (higher-form) symmetries. Examples of theories with such a defect include SO(3) Yang-Mills (YM) at $θ= π$, $\mathcal{N}=1$ SO(3) super YM, and $\mathcal{N}=4$ SU(2) super YM at $τ= i$. We also introduce an analogous construction in (2+1)d, and…
We construct the defining data of two-dimensional topological field theories (TFTs) enriched by non-invertible symmetries/topological defect lines. Simple formulae for the three-point functions and the lasso two-point functions are derived, and crossing symmetry is proven. The key ingredients are open-to-closed maps and a boundary crossing relation, by which we show that a diagonal basis exists in the defect Hilbert spaces. We then introduce regular TFTs, provide their explicit constructions for the Fibonacci, Ising and Haagerup $\mathcal{H}_3$ fusion categories, and match our formulae with pr…

In this paper, we provide state sum path integral definitions of exotic invertible topological phases proposed in the recent paper by Hsin, Ji, and Jian. The exotic phase has time reversal ($T$) symmetry, and depends on a choice of the spacetime structure called the Wu structure. The exotic phase cannot be captured by the classification of any bosonic or fermionic topological phases, and thus gives a novel class of invertible topological phases. When the $T$ symmetry defect admits a spin structure, our construction reduces to a sort of the decorated domain wall construction, in terms of a boso…
