We propose a general theoretical framework for both constructing and diagnosing inversion-protected higher-order topological superconductors using Kitaev building blocks, a higher-dimensional generalization of Kitaev's one-dimensional Majorana model. For a given crystalline symmetry, the Kitaev building blocks serve as a complete basis to construct all possible Kitaev superconductors that satisfy the symmetry requirements. We derive a simple yet powerful Majorana counting rule that can unambiguously diagnose the existence of higher-order topology for all Kitaev superconductors. We expect this real-space diagnosis to work for general two-dimensional higher-order topological superconductors within this symmetry class. As proof of concept, we have identified two inequivalent stacking strategies using the Kitaev building blocks, based on which we have constructed minimal tight-binding models with symmetry-protecetd Majorana corner modes. Moreover, we have successfully applied our diagnosis to comprehend the Majorana corner physcis in a superconductor model with a fragile Wannier obstruction, confirming the validity of our theory beyond the Kitaev limit. Our work paves the way for interpreting higher-order topological superconductivity from the real-space perspective.
We propose a protected qubit which is `dual' to a suggestion of a superconducting current mirror qubit [A. Kitaev, arXiv:0609441 (2006)]. Our construction can be regarded as the magnetic analogue of Kitaev's proposal: it inherits the intrinsic fault-tolerance of the current mirror qubit, but may perform better than it in the laboratory, since magnetic noise is generally less of a problem than electric noise. We adapt the scheme for universal fault-tolerant quantum computation proposed by Kitaev to our construction.
We study the effects of disorder on a Kitaev chain with longer-range hopping and pairing terms which is capable of forming local zero energy excitations and, hence, serves as a minimal model for localization-protected edge qubits. The clean phase diagram hosts regions with 0, 1, and 2 Majorana zero-modes (MZMs) per edge. Using a semi-analytic approach corroborated by numerical calculations of the entanglement degeneracy, we show how phase boundaries evolve under the influence of disorder. While in general the 2 MZM region is stable with respect to moderate disorder, stronger values drive trans…
Monolayer WTe$_2$, a centrosymmetric transition metal dichacogenide, has recently been established as a quantum spin Hall insulator and found superconducting upon gating. Here we study the pairing symmetry and topological nature of superconducting WTe$_2$ with a microscopic model at mean-field level. Surprisingly, we find that the spin-triplet phases in our phase diagram all host Majorana modes localized on two opposite corners. Even when the conventional pairing is favored, we find that an intermediate in-plane magnetic field exceeding the Pauli limit stabilizes an unconventional equal-spin p…
We address the question of whether individual nonmagnetic impurities can induce zero-energy states in time-reversal-invariant topological superconductors, and define a class of symmetries which guarantee the existence of such states for a specific value of the impurity strength. These symmetries allow the definition of a position-space topological Z_2 invariant, which is related to the standard bulk topological Z_2 invariant. Our general results are applied to the time-reversal-invariant p-wave phase of the doped Kitaev-Heisenberg model, where we demonstrate how a lattice of impurities can dri…
Using superconducting quantum circuit elements, we propose an approach to experimentally construct a Kitaev lattice, which is an anisotropic spin model on a honeycomb lattice with three types of nearest-neighbor interactions and having topologically protected ground states. We study two particular parameter regimes to demonstrate both vortex and bond-state excitations. Our proposal outlines an experimentally realizable artificial many-body system that exhibits exotic topological properties.
A superconducting wire described by a p-wave pairing and a Kitaev Hamiltonian exhibits Majorana fermions at its edges and is topologically protected by symmetry. We consider two Kitaev wires (chains) coupled by a Coulomb type interaction and study the complete phase diagram using analytical and numerical techniques. A topological superconducting phase with four Majorana fermions occurs until moderate interactions between chains. For large interactions, both repulsive and attractive, by analogy with the Hubbard model, we identify Mott phases with Ising type magnetic order. For repulsive interac…
We study superconducting pairing in the doped Kitaev-Heisenberg model by taking into account the recently proposed symmetric off-diagonal exchange $Γ$. By performing a mean-field analysis, we classify all possible superconducting phases in terms of symmetry, explicitly taking into account effects of spin-orbit coupling. Solving the resulting gap equations self-consistently, we map out a phase diagram that involves several topologically nontrivial states. For $Γ<0$, we find a competition between a time-reversal symmetry breaking chiral phase with Chern number $\pm1$ and a time-reversal symmetri…
Symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases are gapped quantum phases with a certain symmetry, which can all be smoothly connected to the same trivial product state if we break the symmetry. For non-interacting fermion systems with time reversal (T), charge conjugation (C), and/or U(1) (N) symmetries, the total symmetry group can depend on the relations between those symmetry operations, such as T N T^{-1}= N or T N T^{-1}= -N. As a result, the SPT phases of those fermion systems with different symmetry groups have different classifications. In this paper, we use Kitaev's K-theory approach to …
We investigate odd-frequency superconducting correlations in normal-superconductor (NS) and short superconductor-normal-superconductor (SNS) junctions with the S region described by the Kitaev model of spinless fermions in one dimension. We demonstrate that, in both the trivial and topological phases, Andreev reflection is responsible for the coexistence of even- and odd-frequency pair amplitudes at interfaces, while normal reflections solely contribute to odd-frequency pairing. At NS interfaces we find that the odd-frequency pair amplitude exhibits large, but finite, values in the topological…
We propose indicators of the discriminant for systems with generalized inversion symmetry which are computed from data only at high-symmetry points in the Brillouin zone. Our approach captures the exceptional points and their symmetry-protected variants without ambiguity arising from the reference energy, which is advantage over the previously known indicators for non-Hermitian systems. As demonstrations, we systematically analyze $3\times 3$-Hamiltonians where the proper choice of the reference energy is not obvious.
We examine different topological phases in three-dimensional non-centrosymmetric superconductors with time-reversal symmetry by using three different types of topological invariants. Due to the bulk boundary correspondence, a non-zero value of any of these topological numbers indicates the appearance of zero-energy Andreev surface states. We find that some of these boundary modes in nodal superconducting phases are dispersionless, i.e., they form a topologically protected flat band. The region where the zero-energy flat band appears in the surface Brillouin zone is determined by the projection…

Topological materials which possess topologically protected surface states have attracted much attention in recent years. In this work, we study the critical current of superconductor/inversion symmetry breaking topological material/superconductor junctions. We found surprisingly that, in topological materials with broken inversion symmetry, the magnitude of the critical Josephson currents $|I^{+}_c(B)|$ at fixed magnetic field $B$ is not the same for critical currents $|I^{-}_c(B)|$ flowing in the opposite direction. Moreover, the critical currents violate the $| I_{c}^{\pm}(B)| = |I_{c}^{\pm…
