In this work we present the dielectric behavior of water with a novel flexible model that improved all three sites water models Different concentrations of the ionic liquid 1- butyl-3-methylimidazolium [bmim] bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide [Tf 2 N] with water was investigated. The study was performed by molecular dynamics simulations using three water models, being two non-polarizable 3-site SPC/E and SPC/e, and a novel flexible 3-site FAB/epsilon model. Systematic thermodynamics, dynamical and dielectric properties were investigated, such as density, diffusion coefficient, heat of vaporization Delta-Hvap, and surface tension at 300 K and 1 bar. We extrapolated the experimental molar fraction of the mixtures and a pattern change for all properties was observed, evidencing the phase separation previously reported by experimental data. The results also display the dielectric effect of the system on the calculated properties.
Recently, we introduced a new force field (FF) to simulate transport properties of imidazolium-based room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) using a solid physical background. In the present work, we apply this FF to derive thermodynamic, structure, and transport properties of the mixtures of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, [BMIM][BF4], and acetonitrile (ACN) over the whole composition range. Three approaches to derive a force field are formulated based on different treatments of the ion-ion and ion-molecule Coulomb interactions using unit-charge, scaled-charge and floating-charg…
We examined the tunability of the capacitance for GaFeO3-ionic liquid-GaFeO3 composite material by external magnetic and electric field. Up to 1.6 folds of capacitance tunability could be achieved at 957kHz with voltage 4v and magnetic field 0.02T applied. We show that the capacitance enhancement is due to the polarization coupling between dielectric layer and ionic liquid layer.
Non-equilibrium synthesis methods allow to alloy bulk-immiscible elements into multinary nanoparticles, which broadens the design space for new materials. Whereas sputtering onto solid substrates can combine immiscible elements into thin film solid solutions, this is not clear for sputtering of nanoparticles in ionic liquids. Thus, the suitability of sputtering in ionic liquids for producing nanoparticles of immiscible elements is investigated by co-sputtering the systems Au-Cu (miscible), Au-Ru and Cu-Ru (both immiscible), and Au-Cu-Ru on the surface of the ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidaz…

We apply a new methodology in the force field generation (PCCP 2011, 13, 7910) to study the binary mixtures of five imidazolium-based room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) with acetonitrile (ACN). The investigated RTILs are composed of tetrafluoroborate (BF4) anion and dialkylimidazolium cations, where one of the alkyl groups is methyl for all RTILs, and the other group is different for each RTILs, being ethyl (EMIM), butyl (BMIM), hexyl (HMIM), octyl (OMIM), and decyl (DMIM). Specific densities, radial distribution functions, ionic cluster distributions, heats of vaporization, diffusion cons…
Ionic liquids are promising candidates for electrolytes in energy-storage systems. We demonstrate that mixing two ionic liquids allows to precisely tune their physical properties, like the dc conductivity. Moreover, these mixtures enable the gradual modification of the fragility parameter, which is believed to be a measure of the complexity of the energy landscape in supercooled liquids. The physical origin of this index is still under debate; therefore, mixing ionic liquids can provide further insights. From the chemical point of view, tuning ionic liquids via mixing is an easy and thus an ec…
We study, by incorporating short-range ion-surface interactions, ionic profiles of electrolyte solutions close to a non-charged interface between two dielectric media. In order to account for important correlation effects close to the interface, the ionic profiles are calculated beyond mean-field theory, using the loop expansion of the free energy. We show how it is possible to overcome the well-known deficiency of the regular loop expansion close to the dielectric jump, and treat the non-linear boundary conditions within the framework of field theory. The ionic profiles are obtained analytica…
We present low-temperature anelastic and dielectric spectroscopy measurements on the perovskite ionic conductor BaCe(1-x)Y(x)O(3-x/2) in the protonated, deuterated and outgassed states. Three main relaxation processes are ascribed to proton migration, reorientation about an Y dopant and tunneling around a same O atom. An additional relaxation maximum appears only in the dielectric spectrum around 60 K, and does not involve H motion, but may be of electronic origin, e.g. small polaron hopping. The peak at the lowest temperature, assigned to H tunneling, has been fitted with a relaxation rate pr…
The dielectric constant of ionic solutions is known to reduce with increasing ionic concentrations. However, the origin of this effect has not been thoroughly explored. In this paper we study two such possible sources: long-range Coulombic correlations and solvent excluded volume. Correlations originate from fluctuations of the electrostatic potential beyond the mean-field Poisson-Boltzmann theory, evaluated by employing a field-theoretical loop expansion of the free energy. The solvent excluded-volume, on the other hand, stems from the finite ion size, accounted for via a lattice-gas model. W…
Since polycrystals of alkali halides are highly useful as components in optical devices, a number of mixed crystals of NaBr and KBr have been prepared from melt by other workers. Among these crystals, it was reported that the polycrystal Na$_{0.4}$K$_{0.6}$Br exhibits the strongest temperature variation of the dielectric constant. Here, we show quantitatively that this is due to the temperature variation of the ionic polarizability.
High-performance $n$-type organic field-effect transistors were developed with ionic-liquid gates and N,N$^"$-bis(n-alkyl)-(1,7 and 1,6)-dicyanoperylene-3,4:9,10-bis(dicarboximide)s single-crystals. Transport measurements show that these devices reproducibly operate in ambient atmosphere with negligible gate threshold voltage and mobility values as high as 5.0 cm$^2$/Vs. These mobility values are essentially identical to those measured in the same devices without the ionic liquid, using vacuum or air as the gate dielectric. Our results indicate that the ionic-liquid and $n$-type organic semico…
Using dielectric spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry, we have performed a detailed investigation of the influence of water uptake on the translational and reorientational glassy dynamics in the typical ionic liquid 1-Butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium chloride. From a careful analysis of the measured dielectric permittivity and conductivity spectra, we find a significant acceleration of cation reorientation and a marked increase of the ionic conductivity for higher water contents. The latter effect mainly arises due to a strong impact of water content on the glass temperature, which for…
The conductivity of $α$-polyvinylidene fluoride ($α$-PVDF) is obtained from dielectric measurements performed in the frequency domain at several temperatures. At temperatures above the glass-transition, the conductivity can be interpreted as an ionic conductivity, which confirms earlier results reported in the literature. Our investigation shows that the observed ionic conductivity is closely related to the amorphous phase of the polymer.
We demonstrate a simple and robust methodology for measuring and analyzing the polarization impedance appearing at interface between electrodes and ionic solutions, in the frequency range from 1 to $10^6$ Hz. The method assumes no particular behavior of the electrode polarization impedance and it only makes use of the fact that the polarization effect dies out with frequency. The method allows a direct and un-biased measurement of the polarization impedance, whose behavior with the applied voltages and ionic concentration is methodically investigated. Furthermore, based on the previous finding…
The layered perovskite compounds are interesting due to their intriguing physical properties. In this article we report the structural, magnetic and dielectric properties of LnBaCuFeO5 (Ln=Nd, Eu, Gd, Ho and Yb). The structural parameters decrease from Nd to Yb due to the decrease in the ionic radii of the rare earth ions. An antiferromagnetic transition is observed for EuBaCuFeO5 near 120 K along with the glassy dynamics of the electric dipoles below 100 K. The magnetic transition is absent in other compounds, which may be due to the dominance of the magnetic moment of the rare earth ions. Th…
We use molecular dynamics simulations to probe hydration, ion spacing, and cation-anion interaction in two sulfonated polysulfones with different ion distributions along the polymer backbone. At room temperature, these polymers remain in a glassy state even with water contents more than 10%. At the equilibrium water uptake, the ions exhibit a similar level of hydration as they would in their saturated aqueous solution. The framework of Manning's limiting law for counterion condensation is used to examine ionic interactions in the simulated polysulfones. The dielectric constant that the ions ex…

The structural and surface morphology properties have been investigated by XRD and FESEM. Different microscopic interaction among the polymer, salt and SN have been analyzed through FTIR. The dielectric permittivity and loss tangent enable us to estimate the dc conductivity, dielectric strength, double layer capacitance, and relaxation time. The loss tangent relaxation peak shifts towards high-frequenc…
In this manuscript, we report room temperature structural, microstructural, optical, dielectric, and magnetic properties of CuO and Cu0.995La0.005 ceramics, synthesized by solid-state reaction method. La doping in CuO leads to the evolution of compact and dense microstructure with reduced porosity. Due to noticeable differences in the ionic radii of, La doping creates vacancy defects which induce considerable strain in the CuO lattice resulting in a reduction in the lattice parameters and cell volume. However, both ceramics processes a similar monoclinic structure with the C2/c space group. De…
The intercalated water into nanopores exhibits anomalous properties such as ultralow dielectric constant.~Multi-scale modeling and simulations are used to investigate the dielectric properties of various crystalline two-dimensional ices and bulk ices. Although, the structural properties of two-dimensional (2D-) ices have been extensively studied, much less is known about their electronic and optical properties. First, by using density functional theory (DFT) and density functional perturbation theory (DFPT), we calculate the key electronic, optical and dielectric properties of 2D-ices. Perform…
The influence of La and Nd co-substitution on the structural and magnetic properties of BiFeO3 (BFO) thin films was examined. Epitaxial thin films of pure and, La and Nd co-doped BFO on the SrRuO3 buffered single crystal SrTiO3 (001) substrate were deposited using pulsed laser deposition. The structural change in co doped La and Nd BFO thin films which was caused by the changes of force constant in the crystal lattice induced by ionic radii mismatch was investigated. Raman spectroscopy studies manifest the structural change in doped BFO films from rhombohedral to monoclinic distorted phase whi…
Ionic gating is a powerful technique for tuning the physical properties of a material via electric field-induced charge doping, but is prone to introduce extrinsic disorder and undesired electrochemical modifications in the gated material beyond pure electrostatics. Conversely, reversible, volatile and electrostatic modulation is pivotal in the reliable design and operation of novel device concepts enabled by the ultrahigh induced charge densities attainable via ionic gating. Here we demonstrate a simple and effective method to achieve reversible and volatile gating of surface-sensitive ultrat…
Reliable first-principles calculations of electrochemical processes require accurate prediction of the interfacial capacitance, a challenge for current computationally-efficient continuum solvation methodologies. We develop a model for the double layer of a metallic electrode that reproduces the features of the experimental capacitance of Ag(100) in a non-adsorbing, aqueous electrolyte, including a broad hump in the capacitance near the Potential of Zero Charge (PZC), and a dip in the capacitance under conditions of low ionic strength. Using this model, we identify the necessary characteristic…
We have performed a dielectric investigation of the ionic charge transport and the relaxation dynamics in plastic-crystalline 1-cyano-adamantane (CNA) and in two mixtures of CNA with the related plastic crystals adamantane or 2-adamantanon. Ionic charge carriers were provided by adding 1% of Li salt. The molecules of these compounds have nearly globular shape and, thus, the so-called revolving-door mechanism assumed to promote ionic charge transport via molecular reorientations in other PC electrolytes, should not be active here. Indeed, a comparison of the dc resistivity and the reorientation…
The ionic conduction properties of the technologically important two-dimensional (2D) layered battery material Na2Mn3O7, with exceptional small-voltage hysteresis between charge and discharge curves, have been investigated as a function of temperature and frequency by an impedance spectroscopy. The detailed analyses of the impedance data in the form of dc-conductivity, ac-conductivity, electrical modulus, dielectric constant and complex polarizability reveal a long-range Na-ionic conductivity with negligible contribution from a local dipole relaxation. A significant enhancement (~10^4 times) o…
We have performed a thorough examination of the reorientational relaxation dynamics and the ionic charge transport of three typical deep eutectic solvents, ethaline, glyceline and reline by broadband dielectric spectroscopy. Our experiments cover a broad temperature range from the low-viscosity liquid down to the deeply supercooled state, allowing to investigate the significant influence of glassy freezing on the ionic charge transport in these systems. In addition, we provide evidence for a close coupling of the ionic conductivity in these materials to reorientational dipolar motions which sh…
Inhomogeneity of ion correlation widely exists in many physicochemical, soft matter, and biological systems. Here, we apply the modified Gaussian renormalized fluctuation theory to study the classic example of the vapor-liquid interface of ionic fluids. The ion correlation is decomposed into a short-range contribution associated with the local electrostatic environment and a long-range contribution accounting for the spatially varying ionic strength and dielectric permittivity. For symmetric salt, both the coexistence curve and the interfacial tension predicted by our theory are in quantitativ…

Many plastic crystals, molecular solids with long-range, center-of-mass crystalline order but dynamic disorder of the molecular orientations, are known to exhibit exceptionally high ionic conductivity. This makes them promising candidates for applications as solid-state electrolytes, e.g., in batteries. Interestingly, it was found that the mixing of two different plastic-crystalline materials can considerably enhance the ionic dc conductivity, an important benchmark quantity for electrochemical applications. An example is the admixture of different nitriles to succinonitrile, the latter being …
We report the fabrication of ionic liquid (IL) gated field-effect transistors (FETs) consisting of bilayer and few-layer MoS2. Our transport measurements indicate that the electron mobility about 60 cm2V-1s-1 at 250 K in ionic liquid gated devices exceeds significantly that of comparable back-gated devices. IL-FETs display a mobility increase from about 100 cm2V-1s-1 at 180 K to about 220 cm2V-1s-1 at 77 K in good agreement with the true channel mobility determined from four-terminal measurements, ambipolar behavior with a high ON/OFF ratio >107 (104) for electrons (holes), and a near ideal su…
We report on phonon properties and electronic transitions in CaCu3Ti4O12, a material which reveals a colossal dielectric constant at room temperature without any ferroelectric transition. The results of far- and mid-infrared measurements are compared to those obtained by broadband dielectric and millimeter-wave spectroscopy on the same single crystal. The unusual temperature dependence of phonon eigenfrequencies, dampings and ionic plasma frequencies of low lying phonon modes are analyzed and discussed in detail. Electronic excitations below 4 eV are identified as transitions between full and …
We performed rheological measurements of the typical deep eutectic solvents (DESs) glyceline, ethaline, and reline in a very broad temperature and dynamic range, extending from the low-viscosity to the high-viscosity supercooled-liquid regime. We find that the mechanical compliance spectra can be well described by the random free-energy barrier hopping model, while the dielectric spectra on the same materials involve significant contributions arising from reorientational dynamics. The temperature-dependent viscosity and structural relaxation time, revealing non-Arrhenius behavior typical for g…
In the present work, the effect of different nanofiller (BaTiO3, CeO2, Er2O3 or TiO2) on blend solid polymer electrolyte comprising of PEO and PVC complexed with bulky LiPF6 have been explored. The XRD analysis confirms the polymer nanocomposite formation. FTIR provides evidence of interaction among the functional groups of the polymer with the ions and the nanofiller in terms of shifting and changing peak profile. The highest ionic conductivity is ~2.3x10-5 S cm-1 with a wide electrochemical stability window of ~3.5 V for 10 wt. % Er2O3. The real and imaginary part of dielectric permittivity …
Upon application of a uniform strain, internal sub-lattice shifts within the unit cell of a non-centrosymmetric dielectric crystal result in the appearance of a net dipole moment: a phenomenon well known as piezoelectricity. A macroscopic strain gradient on the other hand can induce polarization in dielectrics of any crystal structure, even those which possess a centrosymmetric lattice. This phenomenon, called flexoelectricity, has both bulk and surface contributions: the strength of the bulk contribution can be characterized by means of a material property tensor called the bulk flexoelectric…
Dielectric screening plays an important role in reducing the strength of carrier scattering and trapping by point defects for many semiconductors such as the halide perovskite solar materials. However, it was rarely considered as a screen to find new electronic semiconductors. We performed a material search study using the dielectric properties as a screen to identify potential electronic materials in the class of metal-pnictide ternary sulfosalts, containing Bi or Sb. These salts are basically ionic due to the electronegativity difference between the S and both the metal and pnictogen element…

The ceramics studied here include polycrystalline, inorganic, non-metallic materials and are investigated on the basis of their dielectric and ionic properties. Dielectric materials are of interest in telecommunication applications where they are used in tuning and filtering equipment. Ionic and mixed conductors are the subjects of a concerted effort in the search for new materials that can be incorporated into efficient, clean electrochemical devices of interest in energy…
Samarium doped Na$_2$O-ZnO-TeO$_2$ (NZT) glasses were prepared by the melt quenching method. The glass-forming ability and glass stability of prepared glass was estimated by Hruby parameter using Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) and Thermo-gravimetric Analysis (TGA). The study of FTIR spectra and X-ray diffraction described the ionic nature and the amorphous pattern of glass respectively. The absorption peaks were observed for the transitions 6H5/2-4P3/2 at 402 nm,6H5/2-4M19/2 at 418 nm, 6H5/2-4I15/2 at 462 nm and 6H5/2-4I11/2 at 478 nm in the absorption spectra. The optical band gap energy…
In the present article, we have studied the effect of the salt concentration (LiPF6) on transport properties and ion dynamics of blend solid polymer electrolyte (PEO PAN) prepared by solution cast technique. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy confirms the presence of microscopic interactions such as polymer ion and ion ion interaction evidenced by a change in peak area of anion stretching mode. The fraction of free anions and ion pairs obtained from the analysis of FTIR implies that both influence the ionic conductivity with different salt concentration. The complex dielectric perm…
Crystalline Bi5NbO10 nanoparticles have been achieved through a modified sol-gel process using a mixture of ethylenediamine and ethanolamine as a solvent. The Bi5NbO10 nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry/thermogravimetry, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Raman spectroscopy. The results showed that well-dispersed 5-60 nm Bi5NbO10 nanoparticles were prepared through heat-treating the precursor at 650C and the high density pellets were obtained at temperatures lower than those com…
Lithium-salt-based deep eutectic solvents, where the only cation is Li+, are promising candidates as electrolytes in electrochemical energy-storage devices like batteries. We have performed broadband dielectric spectroscopy on three such systems, covering a broad temperature and dynamic range that extends from the low-viscosity liquid around room temperature down to the glassy state approaching the glass-transition temperature. We detect a relaxational process that can be ascribed to dipolar reorientational dynamics and exhibits the clear signatures of glassy freezing. We find that the tempera…
