In the present article, we have studied the effect of the salt concentration (LiPF6) on transport properties and ion dynamics of blend solid polymer electrolyte (PEO PAN) prepared by solution cast technique. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy confirms the presence of microscopic interactions such as polymer ion and ion ion interaction evidenced by a change in peak area of anion stretching mode. The fraction of free anions and ion pairs obtained from the analysis of FTIR implies that both influence the ionic conductivity with different salt concentration. The complex dielectric permittivity, dielectric loss, complex conductivity have been analyzed and fitted in the entire frequency range (1 Hz to 1 MHz) at room temperature. The addition of salt augments the dielectric constant and shift of relaxation peak in loss tangent plot toward high frequency indicates a decrease of relaxation time. We have implemented the Sigma representation sigma double prime vs sigma prime for solid lithium ion conducting films which provide better insight toward understating of the dispersion region in Cole Cole plot epsilon double prime vs epsilon prime in lower frequency window. The dielectric strength, relaxation time and hopping frequency are in correlation with the conductivity which reveals the authenticity of results. Finally, the ion transport mechanism was proposed for getting the better understanding of the ion migration in the polymer matrix.
A new class of high-performance pyrrolidinium cation based ionanofluid electrolytes with higher lithium salt concentration are developed. The electrolytes are formed by dispersing imidazolium ionic liquid functionalized TiO2 nanoparticles in low conducting, 0.6 M lithium salt doped N-alkyl-N-butylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (Pyr14TFSI) ionic liquid (IL) hosted electrolyte. Viscosity, ionic conductivity and thermal properties of these electrolytes are compared with well studied 0.2 M salt doped Pyr14TFSI IL-based electrolyte. The highly crystalline 0.6 M lithium salt dissolv…
We study electrostatic mechanisms of destabilization of highly asymmetric electrolytes. For this purpose, we perform primitive model Monte Carlo simulations of charged macroions immersed in multivalent salt solution. At low salt concentration, the macroion effective charge is reduced due to multivalent counterion adsorption. At high salt concentrations, the macroions become overcharged so that their apparent charge has the opposite sign to the stoichiometric one. The inverted charge is growing up to a saturation value upon further increasing the salinity. The system remains stable at low as we…
Water-in-salt electrolytes (WiSEs) are a class of super-concentrated electrolytes that have shown much promise in replacing organic electrolytes in lithium-ion batteries. At the extremely high salt concentrations of WiSEs, ionic association is more complicated than the simple ion pair description. In fact, large branched clusters can be present in WiSEs, and past a critical salt concentration, an infinite percolating ionic network can form spontaneously. In this work, we simplify our recently developed thermodynamic model of reversible ionic aggregation and gelation, tailoring it specifically …
Correlated anion and cation motion can significantly reduce the overall ion conductivity in electrolytes versus the ideal conductivity calculated based on the diffusion constants alone. Using coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations, we calculate conductivity and the degree of uncorrelated ion motion in salt-doped homopolymers and block copolymers as a function of concentration and interaction strengths. Calculating conductivity from ion mobility under an applied electric field increases accuracy versus the typical use of fluctuation dissipation relationships in equilibrium simulations. I…
We investigate the electrostatic interactions of zwitterionic membranes immersed in mixed electrolytes composed of mono- and multivalent ions. We show that the presence of monovalent salt is a necessary condition for the existence of a finite electrostatic force on the membrane. As a result, the mean-field membrane pressure originating from the surface dipoles exhibits a non-uniform salt dependence, characterized by an enhancement for dilute salt conditions and a decrease at intermediate salt concentrations. Upon addition of multivalent cations to the submolar salt solution, the separate inter…
Na-montmorillonite is a natural clay mineral and is available in abundance in nature. The aqueous dispersions of charged and anisotropic platelets of this mineral exhibit non-ergodic kinetically arrested states ranging from soft glassy phases dominated by interparticle repulsions to colloidal gels stabilized by salt induced attractive interactions. When the salt concentration in the dispersing medium is varied systematically, viscoelasticity and yield stress of the dispersion show non-monotonic behavior at a critical salt concentration, thus signifying a morphological change in the dispersion …
In the present work, we have extended a weak coupling theory [A. Bakhshandeh, A. P. dos Santos and Y. Levin Phys. Rev. Lett 107, 107801 (2011)] for systems with added 1:1 electrolyte. To study the accuracy of the developed theory, we compare its numerical predictions with Monte Carlo simulation data and a recent theory which accounts for the surface polarization. A very good agreement is found for the case of monovalent electrolytes, up to very high salt concentrations and different colloidal charges
Colloidal diffusiophoresis in crossed electrolyte gradients: experimental demonstration of an 'action at a distance' effect predicted by the Nernst-Planck equations
For wetting films in dilute electrolyte solutions close to charged walls we present analytic expressions for their effective interface potentials. The analysis of these expressions renders the conditions under which corresponding wetting transitions can be first- or second-order. Within mean field theory we consider two models, one with short- and one with long-ranged solvent-solvent and solvent-wall interactions. The analytic results reveal in a transparent way that wetting transitions in electrolyte solutions, which occur far away from their critical point (i.e., the bulk correlation length …
We introduce a field-theoretic electrolyte model composed of structured solvent molecules and salt ions coupled by electrostatic and hard-core interactions. Within this explicit solvent theory, we characterize the salt-driven dielectric decrement beyond weak-coupling (WC) electrostatics. The WC approximation of prior formalisms is relaxed by treating the salt charges via a virial expansion. This virial approach enables the explicit inclusion of the many-body salt-solvent interactions, and directly leads to the experimentally observed linear decay of the electrolyte permittivity with added dilu…
Recent experiments and a series of subsequent theoretical studies suggest the occurrence of universal underscreening in highly concentrated electrolyte solutions. We performed a set of systematic Atomic Force Spectroscopy measurements for aqueous salt solutions in a concentration range from 1 mM to 5 M using chloride salts of various alkali metals as well as mixed concentrated salt solutions (involving both mono- and divalent cations and anions), that mimic concentrated brines typically encountered in geological formations. Experiments were carried out using flat substrates and submicrometer-s…
The electrostatic Schwinger-Dyson equations are derived and solved for an electrolyte mixture composed of mono- and multivalent ions confined to a negatively charged nanoslit. The closure of these equations is based on an asymmetric treatment of the ionic species with respect to their electrostatic coupling strength; the weakly coupled monovalent ions are treated within a gaussian approximation while the multivalent counterions of high coupling strength are incorporated with a strong-coupling approach. The resulting self-consistent formalism includes explicitly the interactions of the multival…
A Grand-canonical Monte-Carlo simulation method extended to simulate a mixture of salts is presented. Due to charge neutrality requirement of electrolyte solutions, ions must be added to or removed from the system in groups. This leads to some complications compared to regular Grand Canonical simulation. Here, a recipe for simulation of electrolyte solution of salt mixture is presented. It is then implemented to simulate solution of 1:1, 2:1 and 2:2 salts or their mixtures at different concentrations using the primitive ion model. The osmotic pressures of the electrolyte solutions are calculat…
Microphase separation in polymeric systems provides a bottom-up strategy to fabricate nanostructures. Polymers that are reported to undergo microphase separation usually include block copolymers or polyelectrolytes. Neutral homopolymers, which are comparatively easy to synthesize, are thought to be incapable of microphase separation. Here, using a minimal model that accounts for ion solvation, we show that microphase separation is possible in neutral homopolymer blends with sufficient dielectric contrast, upon a tiny amount of salt-doping. The driving force for the microphase separation is the…
We consider an electrolyte solution confined by semipermeable membranes in contact with a salt-free solvent. Membranes are uncharged, but since small counter-ions leak-out into infinite salt-free reservoirs, we observe a distance-dependent membrane potential, which generates a repulsive electrostatic disjoining pressure. We obtain the distribution of the potential and of ions, and derive explicit formulas for the disjoining pressure, which are validated by computer simulations. We predict a strong short-range power-law repulsion, and a weaker long-range exponential decay. Our results also demo…
We present an extensive molecular dynamics (MD) simulation study of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) based densely cross-linked polymers, focussing on structural properties as well as the systems dynamics in the presence of lithium salt. Motivated by experimental findings for networks with short PEO strands we employ a combination of LiTFSI (Lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide) and LiDFOB (Lithium difluoro(oxalato)borate). Recently, it has been shown that such multi-salt systems outperform classical single salt systems (Shaji et al., Energy Storage Materials, 2022, 44, 263). To analyse the mi…
We revisit the classical problem of flow of electrolyte solutions through charged capillary nanopores or nanotubes as described by the capillary pore model (also called "space charge" theory). This theory assumes very long and thin pores and uses a one-dimensional flux-force formalism which relates fluxes (electrical current, salt flux, fluid velocity) and driving forces (difference in electric potential, salt concentration, pressure). We analyze the general case with overlapping electric double layers in the pore and a nonzero axial salt concentration gradient. The 3$\times$3 matrix relating …
We study the Soret effect of charged polystyrene particles as a function of temperature and electrolyte composition. As a main result we find that the Soret coefficient is determined by charge effects, and that non-ionic contributions are small. In view of the well-kown electric-double layer interactions, our thermal field-flow fractionation data lead us to the conclusion that the Soret effect originates to a large extent from diffusiophoresis in the salt gradient and from the electrolyte Seebeck effect, both of which show strong specific-ion effects. Moreover, we find that thermophoresis of p…
The forces between colloidal particles at a decane-water interface, in the presence of low concentrations of a monovalent salt (NaCl) and of the surfactant sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) in the aqueous subphase, have been studied using laser tweezers. In the absence of electrolyte and surfactant, particle interactions exhibit a long-range repulsion, yet the variation of the interaction for different particle pairs is found to be considerable. Averaging over several particle pairs was hence found to be necessary to obtain reliable assessment of the effects of salt and surfactant. It has previously…
Dilute solutions of strongly charged polymer electrolytes undergo, upon addition of multivaltent salt to the solutions, a phase transition from extended conformations to collapsed or bundled ones. Upon further addition of salt they experience a second transition, a redissolution back into extended conformations. This paper presents a theoretical study of the structure and properties of the phase diagram of these solutions. On the basis of simple phenomenological observations a schematic phase diagram is constructed that allows a simple and explicit determination of the direction of the tie lin…
Electrolytes as nanostructured materials are very attractive for batteries or other types of electronic devices. (PEO)8ZnCl2 polymer electrolytes and nanocomposites (PEO)8ZnCl2/TiO2 were prepared from PEO and ZnCl2 and with addition of TiO2 nanograins. The influence of TiO2 nanograins was studied by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) simultaneously recorded with wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) at the synchrotron ELETTRA. It was shown by previous impedance spectroscopy (IS) that the room temperature conductivity of nanocomposite polymer electrolyt…
We propose an efficient simulation algorithm based on the dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) method for studying electrohydrodynamic phenomena in electrolyte fluids. The fluid flow is mimicked with DPD particles while the evolution of the concentration of the ionic species is described using Brownian pseudo particles. The method is designed especially for systems with high salt concentrations, as explicit treatment of the salt ions becomes computationally expensive. For illustration, we apply the method to electro-osmotic flow over patterned, superhydrophobic surfaces. The results are in good…
The combinatorial explosion of empirical parameters in tens of thousands presents a tremendous challenge for extended Debye-Hückel models to calculate activity coefficients of aqueous mixtures of most important salts in chemistry. The explosion of parameters originates from the phenomenological extension of the Debye-Hückel theory that does not take steric and correlation effects of ions and water into account. In contrast, the Poisson-Fermi theory developed in recent years treats ions and water molecules as nonuniform hard spheres of any size with interstitial voids and includes ion-water and…
We develop an analytical theory that accounts for the image and surface charge interactions between a charged dielectric membrane and a DNA molecule translocating through the membrane. Translocation events through neutral carbon-based membranes are driven by a competition between the repulsive DNA-image-charge interactions and the attractive coupling between the DNA segments on the trans and the cis sides of the membrane. The latter effect is induced by the reduction of the coupling by the dielectric membrane. In strong salt solutions where the repulsive image-charge effects dominate the attra…
We present a theoretical description of the effect of polyvalent ions on the interaction between titratable macro-ions. The model system consists of two point-like macro-ions with dissociable sites, immersed in an asymmetric ionic mixture of monovalent and polyvalent salts. We formulate a {\em dressed ion strong coupling theory}, based on the decomposition of the asymmetric ionic mixture into a weakly electrostatically coupled monovalent salt, and into polyvalent ions that are strongly electrostatically coupled to the titratable macro-ions. The charge of the macroions is not considered as fixe…
The study of the electrical double layer lies at the heart of colloidal and interfacial science. The standard mean-field Poisson-Boltzmann (PB) theory is incapable of modeling many phenomena originated from ion correlation. An important example is charge inversion or overcharging of electrical double layers in multivalent electrolyte solutions. Existing theories aiming to include correlations cannot capture the nonmonotonic dependence of charge inversion on salt concentration because they have not systematically accounted for the inhomogeneous nature of correlations from surface to the bulk an…
Ion transport in porous media is present in a wealth of technologies, e.g., energy storage devices such as batteries and supercapacitors, and environmental technologies such as electrochemical carbon capture and capacitive deionization. Recent studies on flat-plate electrodes have demonstrated that asymmetries in ion properties, such as valences and diffusivities, lead to intriguing and counter-intuitive physical phenomena. Yet, the consequences of such asymmetries to ion transport have seldom been explored in porous geometries. To bridge this knowledge gap, we conduct a perturbation expansion…
A mesoscopic theory for water-in-salt electrolytes combining density functional and field-theoretic methods is developed in order to explain the unexpectedly large period of the oscillatory decay of the disjoining pressure observed in recent experiments for the LiTFSI (lithium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)-imide) salt [T. S. Groves et. al., J. Phys. Chem. Lett. {\bf 12},1702 (2021)]. We assumed spherical ions with different diameters, and implicit solvent inducing strong, short-range attraction between ions of the same sign. For this highly simplified model, we calculated correlation functions.…
Solid polymer electrolytes (SPE) have the potential to increase both the energy density and stability of lithium-based batteries, but low Li-ion conductivity remains a barrier to technological viability. SPEs are designed to maximize Li-ion diffusivity relative to the anion, while maintaining sufficient salt solubility. It is thus remarkable that polyethylene oxide (PEO), the most widely used SPE, exhibits Li-ion diffusivity that is an order of magnitude smaller than that of typical counter-ions, such as TFSI, at moderate salt concentrations. Here, we show that Lewis-basic polymers like PEO in…
We determined bulk crystal nucleation rates in aqueous suspensions of charged spheres at low metastability. Experiments were performed in dependence on electrolyte concen-tration and for two different particle number densities. The time-dependent nucleation rate shows a pronounced initial peak, while post-solidification crystal size distributions are skewed towards larger crystallite sizes. At each concentration, the nucleation rate density initially drops exponentially with increasing salt concentration. The complete data set, however, shows an unexpected scaling of the nucleation rate densit…
Freezing in charged porous media can induce significant pressure and cause damage to tissues and functional materials. We formulate a thermodynamically consistent theory to model freezing phenomena inside charged heterogeneous porous space. Two regimes are distinguished: free ions in open pore space lead to negligible effects of freezing point depression and pressure. On the other hand, if nano-fluidic salt trapping happens, subsequent ice formation is suppressed due to the high concentration of ions in the electrolyte. In this case, our theory predicts that freezing starts at a significantly …
Making use of results pertaining to Painleve III type equations, we revisit the celebrated Onsager-Manning-Oosawa condensation phenomenon for charged stiff linear polymers, in the mean-field approximation with salt. We obtain analytically the associated critical line charge density, and show that it is severely affected by finite salt effects, whereas previous results focused on the no salt limit. In addition, we obtain explicit expressions for the condensate thickness and the electric potential. The case of asymmetric electrolytes is also briefly addressed.
In the Nernst-Planck equations in two or more dimensions, a non-Faradaic electric current can arise as a consequence of connecting patches with different liquid junction potentials. Whereas this current vanishes for binary electrolytes or one-dimensional problems, it is in general non-vanishing for example in crossed salt gradients. For a suspended colloidal particle, electrophoresis in the corresponding electrostatic potential gradient is generally vectorially misaligned with chemiphoresis in the concentration gradients, and diffusiophoresis (via electrophoresis) can occur in regions where th…
We calculate the ion distributions around an interface in fluid mixtures of highly polar and less polar fluids (water and oil) for two and three ion species. We take into account the solvation and image interactions between ions and solvent. We show that hydrophilic and hydrophobic ions tend to undergo a microphase separation at an interface, giving rise to an enlarged electric double layer. We also derive a general expression for the surface tension of electrolyte systems, which contains a negative electrostatic contribution proportional to the square root of the bulk salt density. The amplit…
We use a reactive Monte Carlo simulation method and primitive model of electrolyte to study acid-base equilibrium that controls charge regulation in colloidal systems. The simulations are performed in a semi-grand canonical ensemble in which colloidal suspension is in contact with a reservoir of salt and strong acid. The interior of colloidal particles is modeled as a low dielectric medium, different from the surrounding water. The effective colloidal charge is calculated for different number of surface acidic groups, pH, salt concentrations, and types of electrolyte. In the case of potassium …
A desktop experiment has been done to show the nonlinearity in the I-V characteristics of an ion conducting electrochemical micro-system. Its chaotic dynamics is being reported for the first time which has been captured by an electronic circuit. Polyvinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropene (PVdF-HFP) gel electrolyte comprising of a combination of plasticizers (ethylene carbonate and propylene carbonate) and salts have been prepared to study the exchange of ions through porous poly ethylene terephthalate (PET) membranes. The nonlinearity of this system is due to the ion exchange of the polymer …
We have studied a bulk electrolyte, and polyelectrolyte solutions with surfactants or multivalent salt with the explicit presence of counterions and solvent molecules by means of the mesoscopic dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) method in the Grand Canonical ensemble. The electrostatic interactions are calculated using the Ewald sum method and the structure of the fluid is analyzed through the radial distribution function between charged particles. The results are in very good agreement with those reported in the literature using a different method for the calculation of the electrostatic for…
Based on a collective description of electrolytes composed of charge-regulated macro-ions and simple salt ions, we analyze their equilibrium charge state in the bulk and their behavior in the vicinity of an external electrified surface. The mean-field formulation of mobile macro-ions in an electrolyte bathing solution is extended to include interactions between association/dissociation sites. We demonstrate that above a critical concentration of salt, and similar to the critical micelle concentration, a non-trivial distribution of charge states sets in. Such a charge state can eventually lead …
The effects of additions of low-molecular-mass salts on the properties of aqueous lysozyme solutions are examined by using the cloud-point temperature, $T_{cloud}$, measurements. Mixtures of protein, buffer, and simple salt in water are studied at pH=6.8 (phosphate buffer) and pH=4.6 (acetate buffer). We show that an addition of buffer in the amount above $I_{buffer} = 0.6$ mol dm$^{-3}$ does not affect the $T_{cloud}$ values. However, by replacing a certain amount of the buffer electrolyte by another salt, keeping the total ionic strength constant, we can significantly change the cloud-point …
We report the ion transport mechanisms in succinonitrile (SN) loaded solid polymer electrolytes containing polyethylene oxide (PEO) and dissolved lithium bis(trifluoromethane)sulphonamide (LiTFSI) salt using molecular dynamics simulations. We investigated the effect of temperature and loading of SN on ion transport and relaxation phenomenon in PEO-LiTFSI electrolytes. It is observed that SN increases the ionic diffusivities in PEO-based solid polymer electrolytes and makes them suitable for battery applications. Interestingly, the diffusion coefficient of TFSI ions is an order of magnitude hig…
