Correlated anion and cation motion can significantly reduce the overall ion conductivity in electrolytes versus the ideal conductivity calculated based on the diffusion constants alone. Using coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations, we calculate conductivity and the degree of uncorrelated ion motion in salt-doped homopolymers and block copolymers as a function of concentration and interaction strengths. Calculating conductivity from ion mobility under an applied electric field increases accuracy versus the typical use of fluctuation dissipation relationships in equilibrium simulations. In typical electrolytes, correlation in cation-anion motion is often expected to be reduced at low ion concentrations. However, for these polymer electrolytes with strong ion-polymer and ion-ion interactions, we find correlations are increased at lower concentrations when other variables are held constant. We show this phenomenon is related to the slower ion cluster relaxation rate at low concentrations rather than the static spatial state of ion aggregation or the fraction of free ions.
The dynamics of polymeric salt solutions are presented. The salt consists of chains $\rm A$ and $\rm B$, which are chemically different and interact with a Flory-interaction parameter $χ$, the $\rm A$ chain ends carry a positive charge whereas the $\rm B$ chain ends are modified by negative charges. The static structure factor shows a peak corresponding to a micro phase separation. At low momentum transfer, the interdiffusion mode is driven by electrostatics and is of the plasmon-type, but with an unusually low frequency, easily accessible by experiments. This is due to the polymer connectivit…
Salt-induced aggregation of 20 nm colloidal silica is followed by light transmission, which shows an a kinetic form exp[-(t/t_0)^α], where α= 2.6 and t_0 is an empirical time constant which reflects the colloidal stability. We found a power law dependence of t_0 on ionic strength, which can be explained by the classical DLVO theory. The neutral polymers polyethylene glycol (PEG) accelerate the aggregation rate, and those with higher molecular weight are more effective in inducing the aggregation with similar stretched exponential form of kinetics. Current theories of polymer-mediated interacti…
In the present article, we have studied the effect of the salt concentration (LiPF6) on transport properties and ion dynamics of blend solid polymer electrolyte (PEO PAN) prepared by solution cast technique. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy confirms the presence of microscopic interactions such as polymer ion and ion ion interaction evidenced by a change in peak area of anion stretching mode. The fraction of free anions and ion pairs obtained from the analysis of FTIR implies that both influence the ionic conductivity with different salt concentration. The complex dielectric perm…
We present a generalized theory for studying static monomer density-density correlation function (structure factor) in concentrated solutions and melts of dipolar as well as ionic polymers. The theory captures effects of electrostatic fluctuations on the structure factor and provides insights into the origin of experimentally observed enhanced scattering at ultralow wavevectors in salt-free ionic polymers. It is shown that the enhanced scattering can originate from a coupling between fluctuations of electric polarization and monomer density. Local and non-local effects of the polarization resu…
Conductive polymers or "organic metals" are highly engineered nanostructured materials made from organic building blocks. They are candidates as molecular wires for nanotechnology applications in molecular electronics. The conduction in these polymers is due to the presence of delocalized molecular orbitals. In this work, we present the synthesis of chloride doped polyaniline by bulk oxidative chemical polymerization using a solid aniline salt as a monomer instead of liquid aniline to diminish toxic hazards. The FTIR and UV-visible spectra confirmed the expected structure of the polymer. The e…
We report a neutral salt water based battery which uses p-type and n-type solution processed polymer films as the cathode and the anode of the cell. The specific capacity of the electrodes (approximately 30 mAh cm-3) is achieved via formation of bipolarons in both the p-type and n-type polymers. By engineering ethylene glycol and zwitterion based side chains attached to the polymer backbone we facilitate rapid ion transport through the non-porous polymer films. This, combined with efficient transport of electronic charge via the conjugated polymer backbones, allowed the films to maintain const…
The experimentally observed swelling and collapse response of weakly charged polymers to the addition of specific salts displays quite convoluted behavior that is not easy to categorize. Here we use a minimalistic implicit solvent / explicit salt simulation model with a focus on ion-specific interactions between ions and a single weakly charged polyelectrolyte to qualitatively explain the observed effects. In particular, we demonstrate ion-specific screening and bridging effects cause collapse at low salt concentrations whereas the same strong ion-specific direct interactions drive re-entrant …
We probe the electrostatic mechanism driving adsorption of polyelectrolytes onto like-charged membranes upon the addition of tri- and tetravalent counterions to a bathing monovalent salt solution. We develop a one-loop-dressed strong coupling theory that treats the monovalent salt at the electrostatic one-loop level and the multivalent counterions within a strong-coupling approach. It is shown that the adhesive force of the multivalent counterions mediating the like-charge adsorption arises from their strong condensation at the charged membrane. The resulting interfacial counterion excess loca…
Polymer translocation experiments typically involve anionic polyelectrolytes such as DNA molecules driven through negatively charged nanopores. Quantitative modelling of polymer capture to the nanopore followed by translocation therefore necessitates the consideration of the electrostatic barrier resulting from like-charge polymer-pore interactions. To this end, in this work we couple mean-field level electrohydrodynamic equations with the Smoluchowski formalism to characterize the interplay between the electrostatic barrier, the electrophoretic drift, and the electro-osmotic liquid flow. In p…
Charged polymer brushes are layers of surface-tethered chains. Experimental systems are frequently strongly charged. Here we calculate phase diagrams for such brushes in terms of salt concentration n_s, grafting density and polymer backbone charge density. Electrostatic stiffening and counterion condensation effects arise which are absent from weakly charged brushes. In various phases chains are locally or globally fully stretched and brush height H has unique scaling forms; at higher salt concentrations we find H ~ n_s^(-1/3), in good agreement with experiment.
We report results of small angle neutron scattering measurements made on sodium polystyrene sulfonate in aqueous salt solutions. The correlation length and osmotic compressibility are measured as a function of polymer (c) and added salt ($c_S$) concentrations, and the results are compared with scaling predictions and the random-phase approximation (RPA). In Dobrynin et al's scaling model the osmotic pressure consists of a counter-ion contribution and a polymer contribution. The polymer contribution is found to be two orders of magnitude smaller than expected from the scaling model, in agreemen…
Microphase separation in polymeric systems provides a bottom-up strategy to fabricate nanostructures. Polymers that are reported to undergo microphase separation usually include block copolymers or polyelectrolytes. Neutral homopolymers, which are comparatively easy to synthesize, are thought to be incapable of microphase separation. Here, using a minimal model that accounts for ion solvation, we show that microphase separation is possible in neutral homopolymer blends with sufficient dielectric contrast, upon a tiny amount of salt-doping. The driving force for the microphase separation is the…
We present a mechanism for the stabilization of colloids in liquid mixtures without use of surfactants or polymers. When a suitable salt is added to a solvent mixture, the coupling of the colloid's surface chemistry and the preferential solvation of ions leads to a repulsive force between colloids that can overcome van der Waals attraction. This repulsive force is substantial in a large range of temperatures, mixture composition and salt concentrations. The increased repulsion due to addition of salt occurs even for charged colloids. This mechanism may be useful in experimental situations wher…
We present an extensive molecular dynamics (MD) simulation study of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) based densely cross-linked polymers, focussing on structural properties as well as the systems dynamics in the presence of lithium salt. Motivated by experimental findings for networks with short PEO strands we employ a combination of LiTFSI (Lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide) and LiDFOB (Lithium difluoro(oxalato)borate). Recently, it has been shown that such multi-salt systems outperform classical single salt systems (Shaji et al., Energy Storage Materials, 2022, 44, 263). To analyse the mi…
We develop a first-principle equation of state of salt-free polyelectrolyte solution in the limit of infinitely long flexible polymer chains in the framework of a field-theoretical formalism beyond the linear Debye-Hueckel theory and predict a liquid-liquid phase separation induced by a strong correlation attraction. As a reference system we choose a set of two subsystems - charged macromolecules immersed in a structureless oppositely charged background created by counterions (polymer one component plasma) and counterions immersed in oppositely charged background created by polymer chains (har…
Counterion distribution around an isolated flexible polyelectrolyte in the presence of a divalent salt is evaluated using the adsorption model [M. Muthukumar, J. Chem. Phys. {\bf 120}, 9343 (2004)] that considers Bjerrum length, salt concentration, and local dielectric heterogeneity as physical variables in the system. Self consistent calculations of effective charge and size of polymer show that divalent counterions replace condensed monovalent counterions in competitive adsorption. The theory further predicts that at modest physical conditions, polymer charge is compensated and reversed with…
We use optical and fluorescence microscopy, densitometry, cryo-transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM), spectroscopy, and synchrotron X-ray scattering, to study the phase behavior of the reversible self-assembled chromonic aggregates of an anionic dye Sunset Yellow (SSY) in aqueous solutions crowded with an electrically neutral polymer polyethylene glycol (PEG) and doped with the salt NaCl. PEG causes the isotropic SSY solutions to condense into a liquid-crystalline region with a high concentration of SSY aggregates, coexisting with a PEG-rich isotropic (I) region. PEG added to the homogen…
Conducting polymers have wide technological applications in sensors, actuators, electric and optical devices, solar cells etc. To improve their operational performance, mechanical, thermal, electrical and optical properties, such polymers are doped with carbon allotrope nanofillers. Functionality of the novel nanocomposite polymers may be stipulated by size characteristics of nanoparticles and the polymer, different physical effects like charge transfer in such objects etc. We characterize and analyze structure, elastic, electric properties and of novel polymer nanocomposites, isotactic polypr…
We present results of molecular dynamics simulations of strong, flexible polyelectrolyte chains in solution with added salt. The effect of added salt on the polyelectrolyte chain structure is fully treated for the first time as a function of polymer density. Systems above and below the Manning condensation limit are studied. The chain contraction due to added salt is weaker than expected from simple screening arguments. The chain structure is intimately tied to the ion density near the chain even for chains in the counterion condensation regime. In contradiction to Manning counterion condensat…
Complexation between anionic and cationic polyelectrolytes results in solid-like precipitates or liquid-like coacervate depending on the added salt in the aqueous medium. However, the boundary between these polymer-rich phases is quite broad and the associated changes in the polymer relaxation in the complexes across the transition regime are poorly understood. In this work, the relaxation dynamics of complexes across this transition is probed over a wide timescale by measuring viscoelastic spectra and zero-shear viscosities at varying temperatures and salt concentrations for two different sal…
Electrophoretic (EP) mobility reversal is commonly observed for strongly charged macromolecules in multivalent salt solutions. This curious effect takes place, e.g., when a charged polymer, such as DNA, adsorbs excess counterions so that the counterion-dressed surface charge reverses its sign, leading to the inversion of the polymer drift driven by an external electric field. In order to characterize this seemingly counterintuitive phenomenon that cannot be captured by electrostatic mean-field theories, we adapt here a previously developed strong-coupling-dressed Poisson-Boltzmann approach to …
We provide numerical evidence that hydrodynamic interactions are screened for charged polymers in salt solution on time scales below the Zimm time. At very short times, a crossover to hydrodynamic behavior is observed. Our conclusions are drawn from extensive coarse-grained computer simulations of polyelectrolytes in explicit solvent and explicit salt, and discussed in terms of analytical arguments based on the Debye-Hueckel approximation.
We explore theoretically the modifications to the interactions between charged surfaces across an ionic solution caused by the presence of dielectric polymers. Although the chains are neutral, the polymer physics and the electrostatics are coupled; the intra-surface electric fields polarise any low permittivity species (e.g., polymer) dissolved in a high permittivity solvent (e.g., water). This coupling enhances the polymer depletion from the surfaces and increases the screening of electrostatic interactions with respect to a model which treats polymeric and electrostatic effects as independen…
We develop a deep neural network (DNN) that accounts for the phase behaviors of polymer-containing liquid mixtures. The key component in the DNN consists of a theory-embedded layer that captures the characteristic features of the phase behavior via coarse-grained mean-field theory and scaling laws and substantially enhances the accuracy of the DNN. Moreover, this layer enables us to reduce the size of the DNN for the phase diagrams of the mixtures. This study also presents the predictive power of the DNN for the phase behaviors of polymer solutions and salt-free and salt-doped diblock copolyme…
A combination of Fourier transform infrared and phase transition measurements as well as molecular computer simulations, and thermodynamic modeling were performed to probe the mechanisms by which guanidinium salts influence the stability of the collapsed versus uncollapsed state of an elastin-like polypeptide (ELP), an uncharged thermoresponsive polymer. We found that the cation's action was highly dependent upon the counteranion with which it was paired. Specifically, Gnd+ was depleted from the ELP/water interface and was found to stabilize the collapsed state of the macromolecule when paired…
Using self-assembly techniques, x-ray reflectivity measurements, and computer simulations, we study the effective interaction between charged polymer rods and surfaces. Long-time Brownian dynamics simulations are used to measure the effective adhesion force acting on the rods in a model consisting of a planar array of uniformly positively charged, stiff rods and a negatively charged planar substrate in the presence of explicit monovalent counterions and added monovalent salt ions in a continuous, isotropic dielectric medium. This electrostatic model predicts an attractive polymer-surface adhes…
Solid polymer electrolytes (SPE) have the potential to increase both the energy density and stability of lithium-based batteries, but low Li-ion conductivity remains a barrier to technological viability. SPEs are designed to maximize Li-ion diffusivity relative to the anion, while maintaining sufficient salt solubility. It is thus remarkable that polyethylene oxide (PEO), the most widely used SPE, exhibits Li-ion diffusivity that is an order of magnitude smaller than that of typical counter-ions, such as TFSI, at moderate salt concentrations. Here, we show that Lewis-basic polymers like PEO in…
This paper reports on the one-pot synthesis of main-chain imidazolium-containing polymers, some of which show unusually high thermal stability. The imidazolium polymers were obtained by modified Debus-Radziszewski reactions for the chain build-up from simple organic compounds, here pyruvaldehyde, formaldehyde, acetic acid, and a variety of diamines. The reactions were performed in aqueous media at ambient conditions, being synthetically elegant, convenient and highly efficient. Finally, a simple anion-metathesis reaction was conducted to replace the acetate anion with dicyanamide, and the ther…

We develop an analytical theory that accounts for the image and surface charge interactions between a charged dielectric membrane and a DNA molecule translocating through the membrane. Translocation events through neutral carbon-based membranes are driven by a competition between the repulsive DNA-image-charge interactions and the attractive coupling between the DNA segments on the trans and the cis sides of the membrane. The latter effect is induced by the reduction of the coupling by the dielectric membrane. In strong salt solutions where the repulsive image-charge effects dominate the attra…
Making use of results pertaining to Painleve III type equations, we revisit the celebrated Onsager-Manning-Oosawa condensation phenomenon for charged stiff linear polymers, in the mean-field approximation with salt. We obtain analytically the associated critical line charge density, and show that it is severely affected by finite salt effects, whereas previous results focused on the no salt limit. In addition, we obtain explicit expressions for the condensate thickness and the electric potential. The case of asymmetric electrolytes is also briefly addressed.
We study the stability of mixtures of highly screened repulsive charged spheres and non-adsorbing ideal polymer chains in a common solvent using free volume theory. The effective interaction between charged colloids in an aqueous salt solution is described by a screened-Coulomb pair potential, which supplements the pure hard-sphere interaction. The ideal polymer chains are treated as spheres that are excluded from the colloids by a hard-core interaction, whereas the interaction between two ideal chains is set to zero. In addition, we investigate the phase behaviour of charged colloid-polymer m…
Solid-state nanopores are single molecule sensors that measure changes in ionic current as charged polymers such as DNA pass through. Here, we present comprehensive experiments on the length, voltage and salt dependence of the frequency of double-stranded DNA translocations through conical quartz nanopores with mean opening diameter 15 nm. We observe an entropic barrier limited, length dependent translocation frequency at 4M LiCl salt concentration and a drift-dominated, length independent translocation frequency at 1M KCl salt concentration. These observations are described by a unifying conv…
Adsorption of charged polymers (polyelectrolytes) from a semi-dilute solution to a charged surface is investigated theoretically. We obtain simple scaling laws for (i) the amount of polymer adsorbed to the surface, Gamma, and (ii) the width of the adsorbed layer D, as function of the fractional charge per monomer p and the salt concentration c_b. For strongly charged polyelectrolytes (p<1) in a low-salt solution, both Gamma and D scale as p^{-1/2}. In salt-rich solutions D~c_b^{1/2}/p whereas the scaling behavior of Gamma depends on the strength of the polymer charge. For weak polyelectrolytes…
Sensitive sequencing of biopolymers by nanopore-based translocation techniques requires extension of the time spent by the molecule in the pore. We develop an electrostatic theory of polymer translocation to show that the translocation time can be extended via the dielectric trapping of the polymer. In dilute salt conditions, the dielectric contrast between the low permittivity membrane and large permittivity solvent gives rise to attractive interactions between the cis and trans portions of the polymer. This self-attraction acts as a dielectric trap that can enhance the translocation time by …
We used fluorescence spectroscopic measurements as a probe to study the self-healing properties of anthraquinone derivative molecules doped in poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). 2,4-dibromo anthraquinone dye doped in PMMA recovers after photodegradation. Its dynamics differs from other anthraquinone derivative molecules. This could be due to the relatively heavier bromine atom attached to one of the carbon atoms of the benzene ring. In this paper, we will discuss the self-healing properties of 2,4-dibromo anthraquinone doped in PMMA matrix. We also tested the correlated chromophore domain model…
We study the Soret effect of charged polystyrene particles as a function of temperature and electrolyte composition. As a main result we find that the Soret coefficient is determined by charge effects, and that non-ionic contributions are small. In view of the well-kown electric-double layer interactions, our thermal field-flow fractionation data lead us to the conclusion that the Soret effect originates to a large extent from diffusiophoresis in the salt gradient and from the electrolyte Seebeck effect, both of which show strong specific-ion effects. Moreover, we find that thermophoresis of p…
A new class of high-performance pyrrolidinium cation based ionanofluid electrolytes with higher lithium salt concentration are developed. The electrolytes are formed by dispersing imidazolium ionic liquid functionalized TiO2 nanoparticles in low conducting, 0.6 M lithium salt doped N-alkyl-N-butylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (Pyr14TFSI) ionic liquid (IL) hosted electrolyte. Viscosity, ionic conductivity and thermal properties of these electrolytes are compared with well studied 0.2 M salt doped Pyr14TFSI IL-based electrolyte. The highly crystalline 0.6 M lithium salt dissolv…
The equilibrium phase behavior of a binary mixture of charged colloids and neutral, non-adsorbing polymers is studied within free-volume theory. A model mixture of charged hard-sphere macroions and ideal, coarse-grained, effective-sphere polymers is mapped first onto a binary hard-sphere mixture with non-additive diameters and then onto an effective Asakura-Oosawa model [S. Asakura and F. Oosawa, J. Chem. Phys. 22, 1255 (1954)]. The effective model is defined by a single dimensionless parameter -- the ratio of the polymer diameter to the effective colloid diameter. For high salt-to-counterion …
We study the elastic properties of a rigid filament in a bath of self-propelled particles. We find that while fully flexible filaments swell monotonically upon increasing the strength of the propelling force, rigid filaments soften for moderate activities, collapse into metastable hairpins for intermediate strengths, and eventually re-expand when the strength of the activity of the surrounding fluid is large. This collapse and re-expansion of the filament with the bath activity is reminiscent of the behavior observed in polyelectrolytes in the presence of different concentrations of multivalen…
We discuss implications of a recent experimental breakthrough which uses a fluorescence-doped flexible semiconducting polymer to construct a single-molecule sensor which can detect ultra-weak forces in the molecular environment, with a grey scale down to 300 femtonewtons.
Simulations on a Lennard-Jones computer glass are performed to study effects arising from defects in glasses at low temperatures. The numerical analysis reveals that already a low concentration of defects may dramatically change the low temperature properties by giving rise to extrinsic double-well potentials (DWP's). The main characteristics of these extrinsic DWP's are (i) high barrier heights, (ii) high probability that a defect is indeed connected with an extrinsic DWP, (iii) highly localized dynamics around this defect, and (iv) smaller deformation potential coupling to phonons. Designing…
Doping is a common route to reducing nanowire transistor on-resistance but has limits. High doping level gives significant loss in gate performance and ultimately complete gate failure. We show that electrolyte gating remains effective even when the Be doping in our GaAs nanowires is so high that traditional metal-oxide gates fail. In this regime we obtain a combination of sub-threshold swing and contact resistance that surpasses the best existing p-type nanowire MOSFETs. Our sub-threshold swing of 75 mV/dec is within 25% of the room-temperature thermal limit and comparable with n-InP and n-Ga…
The efficiency of nanopore-based polymer sensing devices depends on the fast capture of anionic polyelectrolytes by negatively charged pores. This requires the cancellation of the electrostatic barrier associated with repulsive polymer-pore interactions. We develop a correlation-corrected theory to show that the barrier experienced by the polymer can be efficiently overcome by the addition of multivalent cations into the electrolyte solution. Cation adsorption into the pore enhances the screening ability of the pore medium with respect to the bulk reservoir which translates into an attractive …
Diffusive transport of small molecules within the internal structures of biological and synthetic material systems is complex because the crowded environment presents chemical and physical barriers to mobility. We explored this mobility using a synthetic experimental system of small dye molecules diffusing within a polymer network at short time scales. We find that the diffusion of inert molecules is inhibited by the presence of the polymers. Counter-intuitively, small, hydrophobic molecules display smaller reduction in mobility and also able to diffuse faster through the system by leveraging …
A desktop experiment has been done to show the nonlinearity in the I-V characteristics of an ion conducting electrochemical micro-system. Its chaotic dynamics is being reported for the first time which has been captured by an electronic circuit. Polyvinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropene (PVdF-HFP) gel electrolyte comprising of a combination of plasticizers (ethylene carbonate and propylene carbonate) and salts have been prepared to study the exchange of ions through porous poly ethylene terephthalate (PET) membranes. The nonlinearity of this system is due to the ion exchange of the polymer …
Titration of methacrylic acid / ethyl-acrylate copolymers is studied experimentally and theoretically. At low salt concentrations, this polyacid exhibits a plateau in the titration curve below the neutralization point. The plateau has been often attributed to a first-order phase transition associated with polymer conformational changes. We argue that the specific shape of titration curves of hydrophobic polyelectrolytes is due to electrostatics and does not necessarily require a conformation change of the polyelectrolyte chains. We calculate the free energy at the mean-field level and its firs…
Nanoporous carbon composite membranes, comprising a layer of porous carbon fiber structures with an average channel width of 30-60 nm grown on a porous ceramic substrate, are found to exhibit robust desalination effect with high freshwater flux. In three different membrane processes of vacuum membrane distillation, reverse osmosis and forward osmosis, the carbon composite membrane showed 100% salt rejection with 3.5 to 20 times higher freshwater flux compared to existing polymeric membranes. Thermal accounting experiments found that at least 80% of the freshwater pass through the carbon compos…
