We study, by incorporating short-range ion-surface interactions, ionic profiles of electrolyte solutions close to a non-charged interface between two dielectric media. In order to account for important correlation effects close to the interface, the ionic profiles are calculated beyond mean-field theory, using the loop expansion of the free energy. We show how it is possible to overcome the well-known deficiency of the regular loop expansion close to the dielectric jump, and treat the non-linear boundary conditions within the framework of field theory. The ionic profiles are obtained analytically to one-loop order in the free energy, and their dependence on different ion-surface interactions is investigated. The Gibbs adsorption isotherm, as well as the ionic profiles are used to calculate the surface tension, in agreement with the reverse Hofmeister series. Consequently, from the experimentally-measured surface tension, one can extract a single adhesivity parameter, which can be used within our model to quantitatively predict hard to measure ionic profiles.
The dielectric constant of ionic solutions is known to reduce with increasing ionic concentrations. However, the origin of this effect has not been thoroughly explored. In this paper we study two such possible sources: long-range Coulombic correlations and solvent excluded volume. Correlations originate from fluctuations of the electrostatic potential beyond the mean-field Poisson-Boltzmann theory, evaluated by employing a field-theoretical loop expansion of the free energy. The solvent excluded-volume, on the other hand, stems from the finite ion size, accounted for via a lattice-gas model. W…
The static dielectric properties of dense ionic fluids, e.g., room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) and inorganic fused salts, are investigated on different length scales by means of grandcanonical Monte Carlo simulations. A generally applicable scheme is developed which allows one to approximately decompose the electric susceptibility of dense ionic fluids into the orientation and the distortion polarization contribution. It is shown that at long range the well-known plasma-like perfect screening behavior occurs, which corresponds to a diverging distortion susceptibility, whereas at short ra…
Ionic liquids are promising candidates for electrolytes in energy-storage systems. We demonstrate that mixing two ionic liquids allows to precisely tune their physical properties, like the dc conductivity. Moreover, these mixtures enable the gradual modification of the fragility parameter, which is believed to be a measure of the complexity of the energy landscape in supercooled liquids. The physical origin of this index is still under debate; therefore, mixing ionic liquids can provide further insights. From the chemical point of view, tuning ionic liquids via mixing is an easy and thus an ec…
The report presents pressure-related broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS) studies in liquid crystalline octyloxycyanbiphenyl and its nanocolloid with BaTiO3 nanoparticles, focused on the low-frequency ionic domain and the impact of pretransitional fluctuations. Hence basic exogenic (pressure) and endogenic (nanoparticles) impacts on dielectric properties are addressed. The innovative derivative-based analysis revealed functional 'critical-like' descriptions of ionic contributions to dielectric permittivity and electric conductivity. The supplementary dielectric constant scan, yielding insig…
In this contribution, a new POM-based ionic liquid, namely (P6,6,6,14)4[W10O32], was fully characterized. Its viscosity and its very low dielectric constant make this hybrid ionic liquid suitable to be used as solvent for organic transformations. As proof of concept, this unique ionic liquid combining solvant and catalyst properties was tested for catalytic oxidation of various alcohols and alkenes in presence of H2O2
The report shows the temperature behavior of the real part of dielectric permittivity in the static (dielectric constant) and lo-frequency (LF) domains in bulk samples of 11CB and BaTiO3-based nanocolloids. The study covers the Isotropic Liquid (I), Nematic (N), Smectoc A (SmA) and Solid CRystal (Cr) phases. For each phase, the dominance of pretransitional fluctuations, significantly moderated by nanoparticles is shown. The authors consider separate focus on dielectric constant(Eps(T)) evolution in the static domain yielding mainly response from permanent dipole moments and their arrangement a…
We revisit the role of the local solvent structure on the activity coefficient of electrolytes with a general non-local dielectric function approach. We treat the concentrated electrolyte as a dielectric medium and suggest an interpolated formula for the dielectric response. The pure water limit is calibrated based on MD simulations and experimental data. Solving our model around a central ion, we find strong over-screening and oscillations in the potential, which are absent in the standard "primitive model" predictions. We obtain mathematically tractable closed-form expressions for the activi…
Ion mobility and ionic conductance in nanodevices are known to deviate from bulk behavior, a phenomenon often attributed to surface effects. We demonstrate that dielectric mismatch between the electrolyte and the surface can qualitatively alter ionic transport in a counterintuitive manner. Instead of following the polarization-induced modulation of the concentration profile, mobility is enhanced or reduced by changes in the ionic atmosphere near the interface and affected by a polarization force parallel to the surface. In addition to revealing this mechanism, we explore the effect of salt con…
Ionic solutions are often regarded as fully dissociated ions dispersed in a polar solvent. While this picture holds for dilute solutions, at higher ionic concentrations, oppositely charged ions can associate into dimers, referred to as Bjerrum pairs. We consider the formation of such pairs within the nonlinear Poisson-Boltzmann framework, and investigate their effects on bulk and interfacial properties of electrolytes. Our findings show that pairs can reduce the magnitude of the dielectric decrement of ionic solutions as the ionic concentration increases. We describe the effect of pairs on the…

Using dielectric spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry, we have performed a detailed investigation of the influence of water uptake on the translational and reorientational glassy dynamics in the typical ionic liquid 1-Butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium chloride. From a careful analysis of the measured dielectric permittivity and conductivity spectra, we find a significant acceleration of cation reorientation and a marked increase of the ionic conductivity for higher water contents. The latter effect mainly arises due to a strong impact of water content on the glass temperature, which for…
Most ionic liquids contain at least one rather complex ion species exhibiting a dipolar moment. In the present work, we provide a thorough evaluation of broadband dielectric spectra of 12 ionic liquids taking into account the often neglected reorientational dynamics of these ions. We confirm that this dynamics leads to a clear relaxational signature in the spectra, a fact that so far only was considered in few previous works. The obtained reorientational relaxation times are well consistent with earlier inelastic light-scattering and high-frequency dielectric investigations. Evaluating our die…
The impact of mesoscale organization on dynamics and ion transport in binary ionic liquid mixtures is investigated by broadband dielectric spectroscopy, dynamic-mechanical spectroscopy, x-ray scattering, and molecular dynamics simulations. The mixtures are found to form distinct liquids with macroscopic properties that significantly deviate from weighted contributions of the neat components. For instance, it is shown that the mesoscale morphologies in ionic liquids can be tuned by mixing to enhance the static dielectric permittivity of the resulting liquid by as high as 100$\%$ relative to the…
We report measurements of the normal surface forces and friction forces between two mica surfaces separated by a nano-film of dicationic ionic liquid using a Surface Force Balance. The dicationic ionic liquid 1,10-bis(3-methylimidazolium)decane di- [bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)]imide forms a layered structure in nano-confinement, revealed by oscillatory structural forces. Friction measurements performed at different film thicknesses display quantized friction, i.e. discontinuities in friction as layers are squeezed out and friction coefficients dependent on the number of liquid layers confined…
We present a simulation method to study electrolyte solutions in a dielectric slab geometry using a modified 3D Ewald summation. The method is fast and easy to implement, allowing us to rapidly resum an infinite series of image charges. In the weak coupling limit, we also develop a mean-field theory which allows us to predict the ionic distribution between the dielectric charged plates. The agreement between both approaches, theoretical and simulational, is very good, validating both methods. Examples of ionic density profiles in the strong electrostatic coupling limit are also presented. Fina…
Inhomogeneity of ion correlation widely exists in many physicochemical, soft matter, and biological systems. Here, we apply the modified Gaussian renormalized fluctuation theory to study the classic example of the vapor-liquid interface of ionic fluids. The ion correlation is decomposed into a short-range contribution associated with the local electrostatic environment and a long-range contribution accounting for the spatially varying ionic strength and dielectric permittivity. For symmetric salt, both the coexistence curve and the interfacial tension predicted by our theory are in quantitativ…
We use molecular dynamics simulations to probe hydration, ion spacing, and cation-anion interaction in two sulfonated polysulfones with different ion distributions along the polymer backbone. At room temperature, these polymers remain in a glassy state even with water contents more than 10%. At the equilibrium water uptake, the ions exhibit a similar level of hydration as they would in their saturated aqueous solution. The framework of Manning's limiting law for counterion condensation is used to examine ionic interactions in the simulated polysulfones. The dielectric constant that the ions ex…
This work presents a rigorous statistical mechanical theory of solvation free energies, specifically useful for describing the long-range nature of ions in an electrolyte solution. The theory avoids common issues with field theories by writing the excess chemical potential directly as a maximum-entropy variational problem in the space of solvent 1-particle density functions. The theory was developed to provide a simple physical picture of the relationship between the solution's spatial dielectric function, ion screening, and the chemical potential. The key idea is to view the direct correlatio…
The recent measurement of a very low dielectric constant, $ε$, of water confined in nanometric slit pores leads us to reconsider the physical basis of ion partitioning into nanopores. For confined ions in chemical equilibrium with a bulk of dielectric constant $ε_b>ε$, three physical mechanisms, at the origin of ion exclusion in nanopores, are expected to be modified due to this dielectric mismatch: dielectric exclusion at the water-pore interface (with membrane dielectric constant, $ε_m<ε$), the solvation energy related to the difference in Debye-Hückel screening parameters in the pore, $κ$, …
Mobile charge in an electrolytic solution can in principle be represented as the divergence of ionic polarization. After adding explicit solvent polarization a finite volume of electrolyte can then be treated as a composite non-uniform dielectric body. Writing the electrostatic interactions as an integral over electric field energy density we show that the Poisson-Boltzmann functional in this formulation is convex and can be used to derive the equilibrium equations for electric potential and ion concentration by a variational procedure developed by Ericksen for dielectric continua (Arch. Ratio…
Solid polymer electrolytes are considered a promising alternative to traditional liquid electrolytes in energy storage applications because of their good mechanical properties, and excellent thermal and chemical stability. A gap, however, still exists in understanding ion transport mechanisms and improving ion transport in solid polymer electrolytes. Therefore, it is crucial to bridge composition--structure and structure--property relationships. Here we demonstrate that size asymmetry, $λ$, represented by the ratio of counterion to charged monomer size, plays a key role in both the nanostructu…
We have developed a molecular mean-field theory -- fourth-order Poisson-Nernst-Planck-Bikerman theory -- for modeling ionic and water flows in biological ion channels by treating ions and water molecules of any volume and shape with interstitial voids, polarization of water, and ion-ion and ion-water correlations. The theory can also be used to study thermodynamic and electrokinetic properties of electrolyte solutions in batteries, fuel cells, nanopores, porous media including cement, geothermal brines, the oceanic system, etc. The theory can compute electric and steric energies from all atoms…
Two main approaches in particle-based simulations for modeling a charged surface are using explicit, discrete charges and continuum, uniform charges. It is well-known that these two approaches could lead to substantially distinct ionic distributions, whereas a systematic exploration of the origin is still absent. In this short communication, we calculate the electrostatic force of a single point charge above a planar substrate characterized by a surface charge density and dielectric mismatch and compare the differences in the electrostatic forces produced by discrete and continuum representati…
In the present article, we have studied the effect of the salt concentration (LiPF6) on transport properties and ion dynamics of blend solid polymer electrolyte (PEO PAN) prepared by solution cast technique. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy confirms the presence of microscopic interactions such as polymer ion and ion ion interaction evidenced by a change in peak area of anion stretching mode. The fraction of free anions and ion pairs obtained from the analysis of FTIR implies that both influence the ionic conductivity with different salt concentration. The complex dielectric perm…
We present the analysis of the impedance spectra for a binary electrolyte confined between blocking electrodes with dielectric layers. An expression for the impedance is derived from Poisson-Nernst-Planck equations in the linear approximation taking into account the voltage drop on the dielectric layer. The analysis shows, that characteristic features of the frequency dependence of the impedance are determined by the ratio of the Debay length and the effective thickness of the dielectric layer. The impact of the dielectric layer is especially strong in the case of high concentrated electrolyte…
