In this paper, we first consider a class of expanding flows of closed, smooth, star-shaped hypersurface in Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ with speed $u^αf^{-β}$, where $u$ is the support function of the hypersurface, $f$ is a smooth, symmetric, homogenous of degree one, positive function of the principal curvatures of the hypersurface on a convex cone. For $α\le 0<β\le 1-α$, we prove that the flow has a unique smooth solution for all time, and converges smoothly after normalization, to a sphere centered at the origin. In particular, the results of Gerhardt \cite{GC3} and Urbas \cite{UJ2} can be recovered by putting $α=0$ and $β=1$ in our first result. If the initial hypersurface is convex, this is our previous work \cite{DL}. If $α\le 0<β< 1-α$ and the ambient space is hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^{n+1}$, we prove that the flow $\frac{\partial X}{\partial t}=(u^αf^{-β}-ηu)ν$ has a longtime existence and smooth convergence to a coordinate slice. The flow in $\mathbb{H}^{n+1}$ is equivalent (up to an isomorphism) to a re-parametrization of the original flow in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ case. Finally, we find a family of monotone quantities along the flows in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$. As applications, we give a new proof of a family of inequalities involving the weighted integral of $k$th elementary symmetric function for $k$-convex, star-shaped hypersurfaces, which is an extension of the quermassintegral inequalities in \cite{GL2}.
We make observations about constant mean curvature surfaces in Euclidean 3-space and their dual surfaces, and the resulting pairs of surfaces in hyperbolic 3-space under the Lawson correspondence.
We describe local similarities and global differences between minimal surfaces in Euclidean 3-space and constant mean curvature 1 surfaces in hyperbolic 3-space. We also describe how to solve global period problems for constant mean curvature 1 surfaces in hyperbolic 3-space, and we give an overview of recent results on these surfaces. We include computer graphics of a number of examples.
New examples of harmonic unit vector fields on hyperbolic 3-space are constructed by exploiting the reduction of symmetry arising from the foliation by horospheres. This is compared and contrasted with the analogous construction in Euclidean 3-space, using a foliation by planes, which produces some new examples of harmonic maps from 3-dimensional Euclidean domains to the 2-sphere. Finally, the harmonic unit vector field tangent to a parallel family of hyperbolic geodesics is shown to be unstable, by constructing a class of compactly supported energy-decreasing variations. All examples consider…
In this article we fully classify regular tubular surfaces in Euclidean, Lorentzian and hyperbolic 3-spaces whose Gaussian and mean curvatures $K$ and $H$ verify a polynomial relation. More precisely, we determine the set $S(Q)$ of all regular tubular surfaces whose curvatures verify a given polynomial relation $Q(K,H)=0$, and the set $Q(S)$ of all polynomial relations vanished by the curvatures of a given tubular surface $S$.
We study the topology of (properly) immersed complete minimal surfaces $P^2$ in Hyperbolic and Euclidean spaces which have finite total extrinsic curvature, using some isoperimetric inequalities satisfied by the extrinsic balls in these surfaces, (see \cite{Pa}). We present an alternative and partially unified proof of the Chern-Osserman inequality satisfied by these minimal surfaces, (in $\erre^n$ and in $\Han$), based in the isoperimetric analysis above alluded. Finally, we show a Chern-Osserman type equality attained by complete minimal surfaces in the Hyperbolic space with finite total ext…
Let $Σ$ be a compact Riemann surface and $D_1,...,D_n$ a finite number of pairwise disjoint closed disks of $Σ$. We prove the existence of a proper harmonic map into the Euclidean plane from a hyperbolic domain $Ω$ containing $Σ\backslash\cup_{j=1}^n D_j$ and of its topological type. Here, $Ω$ can be chosen as close as necessary to $Σ\backslash\cup_{j=1}^n D_j$. In particular, we obtain proper harmonic maps from the unit disk into the Euclidean plane, which disproves a conjecture posed by R. Schoen and S.T. Yau.
In this paper we review some author's results about Weingarten surfaces in Euclidean space $\r^3$ and hyperbolic space $\h^3$. We stress here in the search of examples of linear Weingarten surfaces that satisfy a certain geometric property. First, we consider Weingarten surfaces in $\r^3$ that are foliated by circles, proving that the surface is rotational, a Riemann example or a generalized cone. Next we classify rotational surfaces in $\r^3$ of hyperbolic type showing that there exist surfaces that are complete. Finally, we study linear Weingarten surfaces in $\h^3$ that are invariant by a g…
We present a method to construct a large family of Lagrangian surfaces in complex Euclidean plane by using Legendre curves in the 3-sphere and in the anti de Sitter 3-space or, equivalently, by using spherical and hyperbolic curves, respectively. Among this family, we characterize minimal, constant mean curvature, Hamiltonian-minimal and Willmore surfaces in terms of simple properties of the curvature of the generating curves. As applications, we provide explicitly conformal parametrizations of known and new examples of minimal, constant mean curvature, Hamiltonian-minimal and Willmore surface…
This paper deals with various topics in analysis on hyperbolic spaces. It surveys some recent progress in non-Euclidean Fourier Analysis and proves some new results for the geodesic Radon transform on hyperbolic spaces.
Following Riemann's idea, we prove the existence of a minimal disk in Euclidean space bounded by three lines in generic position and with three helicoidal ends of angles less than $π$. In the case of general angles, we prove that there exist at most four such minimal disks, we give a sufficient condition of existence in terms of a system of three equations of degree 2, and we give explicit formulas for the Weierstrass data in terms of hypergeometric functions. Finally, we construct constant-mean-curvature-one trinoids in hyperbolic space by the method of the conjugate cousin immersion.
We discuss the Euclidean limit of hyperbolic SU(2)-monopoles, framed at infinity, from the point of view of pluricomplex geometry. More generally, we discuss the geometry of hypercomplex manifolds arising as limits of pluricomplex manifolds.
We investigate the close relationship between minimal surfaces in Euclidean 3-space and constant mean curvature 1 surfaces in hyperbolic 3-space. Just as in the case of minimal surfaces in Euclidean 3-space, the only complete connected embedded constant mean curvature 1 surfaces with two ends in hyperbolic space are well-understood surfaces of revolution -- the catenoid cousins. In contrast to this, we show that, unlike the case of minimal surfaces in Euclidean 3-space, there do exist complete connected immersed constant mean curvature 1 surfaces with two ends in hyperbolic space that are not …
In the four-dimensional pseudo-Euclidean space with neutral metric there are three types of rotational surfaces with two-dimensional axis - rotational surfaces of elliptic, hyperbolic or parabolic type. A surface whose mean curvature vector field is lightlike is said to be quasi-minimal. In this paper we classify all quasi-minimal rotational surfaces of elliptic, hyperbolic and parabolic type, respectively.
A geometric construction is provided that associates to a given flat front in $\mathbb{H}^3$ a pair of minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$ which are related by a Ribaucour transformation. This construction is generalized associating to a given frontal in $\mathbb{H}^3$ , a pair of frontals in $\mathbb{R}^3$ that are envelopes of a smooth congruence of spheres. The theory of Ribaucour transformations for minimal surfaces is reformulated in terms of a complex Riccati ordinary differential equation for a holomorphic function. This enables one to simplify and extend the classical theory, that in pr…
In this article we compute the best Sobolev constants for various Hardy-Sobolev inequalities with sharp Hardy term. This is carried out in three different environments: interior point singularity in Euclidean space, interior point singularity in hyperbolic space and boundary point singularity in Euclidean domains.
We prove that the isoperimetric inequalities in the euclidean and hyperbolic plane hold for all euclidean, respectively hyperbolic, cone-metrics on a disk with singularities of negative curvature. This is a discrete analog of the theorems of Weil and Bol that deal with Riemannian metrics of curvature bounded from above by 0, respectively by -1. A stronger discrete version was proved by A.D.Alexandrov, with a subsequent extension by approximation to metrics of bounded integral curvature. Our proof uses "discrete conformal deformations" of the metric that eliminate the singularities and increase…
We define general rotational surfaces of elliptic and hyperbolic type in the pseudo-Euclidean 4-space with neutral metric which are analogous to the general rotational surfaces of C. Moore in the Euclidean 4-space. We study Lorentz general rotational surfaces with plane meridian curves and give the complete classification of minimal general rotational surfaces of elliptic and hyperbolic type, general rotational surfaces with parallel normalized mean curvature vector field, flat general rotational surfaces, and general rotational surfaces with flat normal connection.
In this paper, we consider an expanding flow of closed, smooth, uniformly convex hypersurface in Euclidean \mathbb{R}^{n+1} with speed u^αf^β(α, β\in\mathbb{R}^1), where u is support function of the hypersurface, f is a smooth, symmetric, homogenous of degree one, positive function of the principal curvature radii of the hypersurface. If α\leq 0<β\leq 1-α, we prove that the flow has a unique smooth and uniformly convex solution for all time, and converges smoothly after normalization, to a round sphere centered at the origin.
Various transformations of isothermic surfaces are discussed and their interrelations are analyzed. Applications to cmc-1 surfaces in hyperbolic space and their minimal cousins in Euclidean space are presented: the Umehara-Yamada perturbation, the classical and Bryant's Weierstrass type representations, and the duality for cmc-1 surfaces are interpreted in terms of transformations of isothermic surfaces. A new Weierstrass type representation is introduced and a Moebius geometric characterization of cmc-1 surfaces in hyperbolic space and minimal surfaces in Euclidean space is given.
Let $Σ$ be a $k$-dimensional complete proper minimal submanifold in the Poincaré ball model $B^n$ of hyperbolic geometry. If we consider $Σ$ as a subset of the unit ball $B^n$ in Euclidean space, we can measure the Euclidean volumes of the given minimal submanifold $Σ$ and the ideal boundary $\partial_\infty Σ$, say $\rvol(Σ)$ and $\rvol(\partial_\infty Σ)$, respectively. Using this concept, we prove an optimal linear isoperimetric inequality. We also prove that if $\rvol(\partial_\infty Σ) \geq \rvol(\mathbb{S}^{k-1})$, then $Σ$ satisfies the classical isoperimetric inequality. By proving the…
The consideration of the so-called rotation minimizing frames allows for a simple and elegant characterization of plane and spherical curves in Euclidean space via a linear equation relating the coefficients that dictate the frame motion. In this work, we extend these investigations to characterize curves that lie on a geodesic sphere or totally geodesic hypersurface in a Riemannian manifold of constant curvature. Using that geodesic spherical curves are normal curves, i.e., they are the image of an Euclidean spherical curve under the exponential map, we are able to characterize geodesic spher…
The deformation theory of hyperbolic and Euclidean cone-manifolds with all cone angles less then 2π plays an important role in many problems in low dimensional topology and in the geometrization of 3-manifolds. Furthermore, various old conjectures dating back to Stoker about the moduli of convex hyperbolic and Euclidean polyhedra can be reduced to the study of deformations of cone-manifolds by doubling a polyhedron across its faces. This deformation theory has been understood by Hodgson and Kerckhoff when the singular set has no vertices, and by Weiß when the cone angles are less than π. We pr…
We prove convergence results for expanding curvature flows in the Euclidean and hyperbolic space. The flow speeds have the form $F^{-p}$, where $p>1$ and $F$ is a positive, strictly monotone and 1-homogeneous curvature function. In particular this class includes the mean curvature $F=H$. We prove that a certain initial pinching condition is preserved and the properly rescaled hypersurfaces converge smoothly to the unit sphere. We show that an example due to Andrews-McCoy-Zheng can be used to construct strictly convex initial hypersurfaces, for which the inverse mean curvature flow to the power…
The Gauss curvature measure of a pointed Euclidean convex body is a measure on the unit sphere which extends the notion of Gauss curvature to non-smooth bodies. Alexandrov's problem consists in finding a convex body with given curvature measure. In Euclidean space, A.D. Alexandrov gave a necessary and sufficient condition on the measure for this problem to have a solution. In this paper, we address Alexandrov's problem for convex bodies in the hyperbolic space H m+1. After defining the Gauss curvature measure of an arbitrary hyperbolic convex body, we completely solve Alexandrov's problem in t…
We show that the boundaries of thin strongly pseudoconvex Grauert tubes, with respect to the Guillemin-Stenzel Kähler metric canonically associated with the Poincaré metric on closed hyperbolic real-analytic surfaces, has nowhere vanishing Cartan CR-curvature. This result provides a wealth of examples of compact $3$-dimensional Levi nondegenerate CR manifolds having no CR-umbilical point. We provide two proofs utilizing two recent formulas for determining the Cartan CR-curvature of any local $\mathcal{C}^6$-smooth hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{C}^2$. One was obtained in 2012 by the second named au…
The edge of torn elastic sheets and growing leaves often form a hierarchical buckling pattern. Within non-Euclidean plate theory this complex morphology can be understood as low bending energy isometric immersions of hyperbolic Riemannian metrics. With this motivation we study the isometric immersion problem in strip and disk geometries. By finding explicit piecewise smooth solutions of hyperbolic Monge-Ampere equations on a strip, we show there exist periodic isometric immersions of hyperbolic surfaces in the small slope regime. We extend these solutions to exact isometric immersions through …
We study the symplectic geometry of the moduli space of closed n-gons with fixed side-lengths in hyperbolic 3-space. We prove that these moduli spaces have a symplectic structure coming from Poisson Lie theory. We construct completely integrable systems on these moduli spaces by bending n-gons along their diagonals. The results of this paper are the analogues of the results of the first two authors for n-gon linkages in Euclidean 3-space in JDG 44. We conclude by proving by a deformation argument that the moduli spaces of n-gon linkages in hyperbolic 3-space and Euclidean 3-space with the same…
Generalising a proof by Bartnik in the asymptotically Euclidean case, we give an elementary proof of positivity of the hyperbolic mass near the hyperbolic space. It is a pleasure to dedicate this work to Robert Bartnik on the occasion of his 60th birthday.
In 1996, Huisken-Yau proved that every three-dimensional Riemannian manifold can be uniquely foliated near infinity by stable closed surfaces of constant mean curvature (CMC) if it is asymptotically equal to the (spatial) Schwarzschild solution. Using their method, Rigger proved the same theorem for Riemannian manifolds being asymptotically equal to the (spatial) (Schwarzschild-)Anti-de Sitter solution. This was generalized to asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds by Neves-Tian, Chodosh, and the author at a later stage. In this work, we prove the reverse implication as the author already did in …
We prove a Morse Lemma for coarsely regular quasigeodesics in nonpositively curved symmetric spaces and euclidean buildings X. The main application is a simpler coarse geometric characterization of Morse subgroups of the isometry groups Isom(X) as undistorted subgroups which are coarsely uniformly regular. We show furthermore that they must be word hyperbolic. We introduced this class of discrete subgroups in our earlier paper, in the context of symmetric spaces, where various equivalent geometric and dynamical characterizations of word hyperbolic Morse subgroups were established, including th…
