In this letter, we address magnetization switching by oxygen adsorption in porous metal-organic framework systems. To this end, we construct a simple localized spin model combined with a Langmuir-type formula for oxygen adsorption and study its finite-temperature properties using Monte Carlo simulation. We successfully explain the main features of this phenomenon, such as the discontinuous changes in magnetic states, sensitivity of the magnetic transition temperatures to oxygen pressure, and absence of singularities in adsorbed oxygen. Based on this model, we also reproduce the observed magnetic transition temperatures for a typical value of oxygen adsorption energy.
Atomic oxygen adsorption on the Mo(112) surface has been investigated by means of first-principles total energy calculations. Among the variety of possible adsorption sites it was found that the bridge sites between two Mo atoms of the topmost row are favored for O adsorption at low and medium coverages. At about one monolayer coverage oxygen atoms prefer to adsorb in a quasi-threefold hollow sites coordinated by two first-layer Mo atoms and one second layer atom. The stability of a structural model for an oxygen-induced $p(2\times 3)$ reconstruction of the missing-row type is examined.
Defect engineering has arisen as a promising approach to tune and optimise the adsorptive performance of metal-organic frameworks. However, the balance between enhanced adsorption and structural stability remains an open question. Here both CO2 adsorption capacity and mechanical stability are calculated for the zirconium-based UiO-66, which is subject to systematic variations of defect scenarios. Modulator-dependence, defect concentration and heterogeneity are explored in isolation. Mechanical stability is shown to be compromised at high pressures where uptake is enhanced with an increase in d…
The hydrogen adsorption sites in MOF5 were determined using neutron powder diffraction along with first-principles calculations. The metal-oxide cluster is primarily responsible for the adsorption while the organic linker plays only a secondary role. Equally important, at low temperatures and high-concentration, H2 molecules form unique interlinked high-symmetry nano-clusters with intermolecular distances as small as 3.0 Ang. and H2-uptake as high as 10-wt%. These results hold the key to optimizing MOF materials for hydrogen storage applications and also suggest that MOFs can be used as templa…
Our study of the adsorption of oxygen molecules on individual semiconductiong single-walled carbon nanotubes at ambient conditions reveals that the adsorption is physisorption, that the resistance without O2 increases by ~two orders of magnitude as compared to that with O2, and that the sensitive response is due to the pinning of the Fermi level near the top of the valence band of the tube resulting from impurity states of O2 appearing above the valence band.
wo-dimensional (2D) materials unique properties and their promising applications in post-silicon microelectronics have attracted significant attention in the past decade. Recently, ferromagnetic order with out-of-plane easy axis in a monolayer of CrI3 has been observed and reported, with a Curie temperature of 45 K. Here we study, using density functional theory (DFT) calculations, how hydrogen and oxygen adsorption affects the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of a CrI3 monolayer. Our results show that while the structure remains almost unchanged by the adsorption of hydrogen, a…
The structures and energetics of organic molecules adsorbed onto clean and H-passivated Si(001)-(2$\times$1) surfaces have been calculated using density functional theory. For benzene adsorbed on the clean Si surface the tight-bridge structure was found to be stable and the butterfly structure metastable. Both carbonic acid H$_2$CO$_3$ and propane C$_3$H$_8$ dissociate on contact with the surface. Passivation of the Si surface with H-atoms has a dramatic effect on the surface properties. The passivated surface is very inert and the binding energy of all the molecules is very weak.
Understanding the interaction of organic molecules with TiO2 surfaces is important for a wide range of technological applications. While density functional theory (DFT) calculations can provide valuable insight about these interactions, traditional DFT approaches with local exchange-correlation functionals suffer from a poor description of non-bonding van der Waals (vdW) interactions. We examine here the contribution of vdW forces to the interaction of small organic molecules (methane, methanol, formic acid and glycine) with the TiO2 (110) surface, based on DFT calculations with the optB88-vdW…
We present a density-functional theory study addressing the on-surface adsorption of oxygen at the Pd(11N) (N =3,5,7) vicinal surfaces, which exhibit (111) steps and (100) terraces of increasing width. We find the binding to be predominantly governed by the local coordination at the adsorption site. This leads to very similar bonding properties at the threefold step sites of all three vicinal surfaces, while the binding at the central fourfold hollow site in the four atomic row terrace of Pd(117) is already very little disturbed by the presence of the neighboring steps.
We present a detailed ab initio study of the electronic structure and magnetic order of an Fe monolayer on the Ir(001) surface covered by adsorbed oxygen and hydrogen. The results are compared to the clean Fe/Ir(001) system, where recent intensive studies indicated a strong tendency towards an antiferromagnetic order and complex magnetic structures. The adsorption of an oxygen overlayer significantly increases interlayer distance between the Fe layer and the Ir substrate, while the effect of hydrogen is much weaker. We show that the adsorption of oxygen (and also of hydrogen) leads to a p(2$\t…
The large number of possible structures of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and their limitless potential applications has motivated molecular modelers and researchers to develop methods and models to efficiently assess MOF performance. Some of the techniques include large-scale high-throughput molecular simulations and machine learning models. Despite those advances, the number of possible materials and the potential conditions that could be used still pose a formidable challenge for model development requiring large data sets. Therefore, there is a clear need for algorithms that can efficient…
Although defects on graphene can degrade electron transport and its ability for use as a protection layer, they can also be helpful to tailor the local properties or activate new sites for particular adsorbates. Here, carbon vacancy defects are formed in graphene films on Ru(0001) using low energy Ar$^+$ bombardment and the materials are then reacted at room temperature with oxygen (O$_2$). Helium low energy ion scattering shows that no oxygen attaches to the intact graphene layer. When isolated single carbon vacancy defects are present, oxygen adsorbs molecularly at the defect sites and inter…
We present and discuss the results of ab initio DFT plane-wave supercell calculations of the atomic and molecular oxygen adsorption and diffusion on the LaMnO3 (001) surface which serves as a model material for a cathode of solid oxide fuel cells. The dissociative adsorption of O2 molecules from the gas phase is energetically favorable on surface Mn ions even on a defect-free surface. The surface migration energy for adsorbed O ions is found to be quite high, 1.6 eV. We predict that the adsorbed O atoms could penetrate into electrode first plane when much more mobile surface oxygen vacancies (…
In order to estimate the reactivity of a large number of potentially complex heterogeneous catalysts while searching for novel and more efficient materials, physical as well as data-centric models have been developed for a faster evaluation of adsorption energies compared to first-principles calculations. However, global models designed to describe as many materials as possible might overlook the very few compounds that have the appropriate adsorption properties to be suitable for a given catalytic process. Here, the subgroup-discovery (SGD) local artificial-intelligence approach is used to id…
First-principles DFT levels of calculations have been carried out in order to study the structural stability and electronic properties of hydrogen passivated graphene (H-graphene) clusters. Two different shaped clusters, rectangular and circular, consisting of 6 to 160 carbon atoms and hydrogen termination at the zigzag boundary edges have been studied. The relative stability of rectangular shaped cluster consisting 96 C-atoms found to be 1.5% greater than that of circular shape cluster consisting same number of C-atoms. In comparing circular and rectangular cluster containing same number of C…
We study the dipole layer formed at metal-organic interfaces by means of first-principles calculations. Interface dipoles are monitored by calculating the work function change of Au, Ag, Al, Mg and Ca surfaces upon adsorption of a monolayer of PTCDA (3,4,9,10-perylene-tetra-carboxylic-di-anhydride), perylene or benzene molecules. Adsorption of PTCDA leads to pinning of the work function for a range of metal substrates. It gives interface dipoles that compensate for the difference in the clean metal work functions, leading to a nearly constant work function. In contrast, adsorption of benzene a…
The segregation behavior of the bimetallic alloys PtPd and CoCr in the case of bare surfaces and in the presence of an oxygen ad-layer has been studied by means of first-principles modeling based on density-functional theory (DFT). For both systems, change of the d-band filling due to charge transfer between the alloy components, resulting in a shift of the d-band center of surface atoms compared to the pure components, drives the surface segregation and governs the chemical reactivity of the bimetals. In contrast to previous findings but consistent with analogous PtNi alloy systems, enrichmen…
The results are presented of a detailed combined experimental and theoretical investigation of the influence of coadsorbed electron-donating alkali atoms and the prototypical electron acceptor molecule TCNQ (7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane) on the Ag(100) surface. Several coadsorption phases were characterised by scanning tunnelling microscopy, low energy electron diffraction, and soft-X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Quantitative structural data were obtained using normal incidence X-ray standing wave (NIXSW) measurements and compared with the results of density functional theory (DFT) calc…
The oxygen adsorption and dissociation on pristine silicene surface are studied by use of first-principles in this letter. The oxygen adsorption and dissociation on pristine silicene surface are studied by use of first-principles in this letter. It is found that the pristine silicene is not stable in air because the oxygen molecule can be easily adsorbed and dissociated into two O atoms without overcoming any energy barrier on pristine silicene surface. In addition, dissociated oxygen atoms are relatively difficult to migrate on or desorbed from pristine silicene surface, leading to poor mobil…
In a world where capture and separation processes represent above 10% of global energy consumption, novel porous materials, such as Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) used in adsorption-based processes are a promising alternative to dethrone the high-energy-demanding distillation. Shape and size tailor-made pores in combination with Lewis acidic sites can enhance the adsorbate-adsorbent interactions. Understanding the underlying mechanisms of adsorption is essential to designing and optimizing capture and separation processes. Herein, we analyze the adsorption behaviour of light hydrocarbons (met…
The adsorption of pentacene on Cu(221), Cu(511) and Cu(911) is investigated using density functional theory (DFT) with the self-consistent inclusion of van der Waals (vdW) interactions. Cu(211) is a vicinal of Cu(111) while Cu(511) and (911) are vicinals of Cu(100). For all the three surfaces, we found pentacene to prefer to adsorb parallel to the surface and near the steps. The addition of vdW interactions resulted in an enhancement in adsorption energies, with reference to the PBE functional, of around 2 eV. With vdWs inclusion, the adsorption energies were found to be 2.98 eV, 3.20 eV and 3…
Pillared Graphene Frameworks are a novel class of microporous materials made by graphene sheets separated by organic spacers. One of their main features is that the pillar type and density can be chosen to tune the material properties. In this work, we present a computer simulation study of adsorption and dynamics of H$_{4}$, CH$_{2}$, CO$_{2}$, N$_{2}$ and O$_{2}$ and binary mixtures thereof, in Pillared Graphene Frameworks with nitrogen-containing organic spacers. In general, we find that pillar density plays the most important role in determining gas adsorption. In the low-pressure regime (…
Metal-organic framework (MOFs) are nanoporous materials that could be used to capture carbon dioxide from the exhaust gas of fossil fuel power plants to mitigate climate change. In this work, we design and train a message passing neural network (MPNN) to predict simulated CO$_2$ adsorption in MOFs. Towards providing insights into what substructures of the MOFs are important for the prediction, we introduce a soft attention mechanism into the readout function that quantifies the contributions of the node representations towards the graph representations. We investigate different mechanisms for …
We present a study on the kinetics of oxygen adsorption and desorption from single-wall carbon nanotube (SWNT) and highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) samples. Thermal desorption spectra for SWNT samples show a broad desorption feature peaked at 62 K which is shifted to significantly higher temperature than the low-coverage desorption feature on HOPG. The low-coverage O2 binding energy on SWNT bundles, 18.5 kJ/mol, is 55% higher than that for adsorption on HOPG, 12.0 kJ/mol. In combination with molecular mechanics calculations we show that the observed binding energies for both systems c…
Breathing transitions represent recently discovered adsorption-induced structural transformations between large-pore and narrow-pore conformations in bistable metal-organic frameworks, such as MIL-53. We present a multiscale physical mechanism of the dynamics of breathing transitions. We show that due to interplay between host framework elasticity and guest molecule adsorption, these transformations on the crystal level occur via layer-by-layer shear. We construct a simple Hamiltonian that describes the physics of host-host and host-guest interactions on the level of unit cells and reduces to …
Adsorption of eight organic molecules (acetone, acetonitrile, ammonia, benzene, methane, methanol, ethanol, and toluene) onto silicene has been investigated using van der Waals density functional theory calculations (DFT-D). The calculated values of the adsorption energies vary from $-0.11$ eV to $-0.95$ eV. Quantitatively, these values are higher than the corresponding adsorption energies of the molecules adsorbed on graphene. In addition, electronic structure calculations have been performed. The obtained values of the band gap range from 0.006 eV to 0.35 eV for acetonitrile to acetone, resp…
Cooperative adsorption of gases by porous frameworks permits more efficient uptake and removal than does the more usual non-cooperative (Langmuir-type) adsorption. Cooperativity, signaled by a step-like isotherm, is usually attributed to a phase transition of the framework. However, the class of metal-organic frameworks mmen-M$_2$(dobpdc) exhibit cooperative adsorption of CO2 but show no evidence of a phase transition. Here we show how cooperativity emerges in these frameworks in the absence of a phase transition. We use a combination of quantum and statistical mechanics to show that cooperati…
A palladium-based (Pd-based) core@shell catalyst can be modified to achieve the desired oxygen adsorption properties by selecting an appropriate core composition, surface alloying, and compressive strain. Herein, we present the effects of compressive strain, core composition, and surface alloying in Pd3Ni@PdIr(111), Pd3CuNi@PdIr(111), and Pd3Cu@PdIr(111) alloy-core@alloy-shell catalysts on dioxygen adsorption. Using experimental lattice parameters for the unstrained catalysts, -1% to -5%, the strain was systematically introduced. The calculated dioxygen-adsorption energies for the surface Pd a…
Semiconducting oxides with reducible cations are ideal platforms for various functional applications in nanoelectronics and catalysts. Here we report an ultrathin monolayer alpha-MoO3 where tunable electronic properties and different gas adsorbing behaviors upon introducing the oxygen vacancies (VO). The unique property of alpha-MoO3 is that it contains three different types of oxygen atoms occupying three Wyckoff sites that are absent in other low-dimensional oxides and provides rich electronic hybridized states. The presence of VO triggers intermediate state in the gap at ~0.59 eV below the …
We provide a general thermodynamic framework for the understanding of guest-induced structural transitions in hybrid organic-inorganic materials. The method is based on the analysis of experimental adsorption isotherms. It allows the determination of the free energy differences between host structures involved in guest-induced transitions, especially hard to obtain experimentally. We discuss the general case of adsorption in flexible materials and show how a few key quantities, such as pore volumes and adsorption affinities, entirely determine the phenomenology of adsorption, including the occ…
Oxygen molecule adsorptions on a Pu (100) surface have been studied in detail, using the generalized gradient approximation to density functional theory. Dissociative adsorption with a layer by layer alternate spin arrangement of the plutonium layer is found to be energetically more favorable compared to molecular adsorption. Hor2 approach on a bridge site without spin polarization was found to the highest chemisorbed site with energy of 8.787 eV among all the cases studied. The second highest chemisorption energy of 8.236 eV, is the spin-polarized Hor2 or Ver approach at center site. Inclusio…
First-principles and semi-empirical tight binding calculations were performed to understand the adsorption of oxygen on the surface of two dimensional (2D) and zigzag stanene nano-ribbons. The intrinsic spin-orbit interaction is considered in the Kane-Mele tight binding model. The adsorption of an oxygen atom or molecule on the 2D stanene opens an electronic energy band gap. We investigate the helical edge states and topological phase in the pure zigzag stanene nano-ribbons. The adsorption of oxygen atoms on the zigzag stanene nano-ribbons deforms the helical edge states at the Fermi level whi…
We report static and dynamic first-principles calculations that provide atomistic pictures of the initial stage of the oxidation processes occurring at the ($11\bar20$) surface of 4H-SiC. Our results unveil reaction pathways and their associated free-energy barriers for the adsorption of oxygen and the desorption of carbon atoms. We find that oxygen adsorption shows structural multi-stability and that the surface-bridge sites are the most stable and crucial sites for subsequent oxidation. We find that an approaching O$_2$ molecule is adsorbed, then dissociated and finally migrates toward these…
We report on a first-principles study of the structure of O/Rh(001) at half a monolayer of oxygen coverage, performed using density-functional theory. We find that oxygen atoms sit at the center of the black squares of a chess-board, $c(2\times 2)$, pattern. This structure is unstable against a rhomboid distortion of the black squares, which shortens the distance between an O atom and two of the four neighboring Rh atoms, while lengthening the distance with respect to the other two. We actually find that the surface energy is further lowered by allowing the O atom to get off the short diagonal…
First principles density functional calculations are used to study the early oxidation stages of the Mg(0001) surface for oxygen coverages 1/16 <= Theta <= 3 monolayers. It is found that at very low coverages O is incorporated below the topmost Mg layer in tetrahedral sites. At higher oxygen-load the binding in on-surface sites is increased but at one monolayer coverage the on-surface binding is still about 60 meV weaker than for subsurface sites. The subsurface octahedral sites are found to be unfavorable compared to subsurface tetrahedral sites and to on-surface sites. At higher coverages ox…
Nickel and Rhodium (001) surfaces display a similar - as from STM images - clock reconstruction when half a monolayer of C/Ni, N/Ni or O/Rh is adsorbed; no reconstruction is observed instead for O/Ni. Adsorbate atoms sit at the center of the black squares of a chess-board, $c(2\times 2)$, pattern and two different reconstructions are actually compatible with the observed STM images - showing a $(2\times 2)p4g$ pattern - according to whether a rotation of the black or white squares occurs. We report on a first - principles study of the structure of X/Ni(001) and X/Rh(001) surfaces (X=C,N,O) at …
The oxidized Ag(111) surface has been studied by a combination of experimental and theoretical methods, scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and density functional theory (DFT). A large variety of different surface structures is found, depending on the detailed preparation conditions. The observed structures fall into four classes: (a) individually chemisorbed atomic oxygen atoms, (b) three different oxygen overlayer structures, including the well-known p(4 x 4) phase, formed from the same Ag$_6$ and Ag$_{10}$ building blocks, (c) a c(4 x 8) structure no…
To help provide insight into the remarkable catalytic behavior of the oxygen/silver system for heterogeneous oxidation reactions, purely sub-surface oxygen, and structures involving both on-surface and sub-surface oxygen, as well as oxide-like structures at the Ag(111) surface have been studied for a wide range of coverages and adsorption sites using density-functional theory. Adsorption on the surface in fcc sites is energetically favorable for low coverages, while for higher coverage a thin surface-oxide structure is energetically favorable. This structure has been proposed to correspond to …
We study the atomic oxygen adsorption on Pb(111) surface by using density-functional theory within the generalized gradient approximation and a supercell approach. The atomic and energetic properties of purely on-surface and subsurface oxygen structures at the Pb(111) surface are systematically investigated for a wide range of coverages and adsorption sites. The fcc and tetra-II sites (see the text for definition) are found to be energetically preferred for the on-surface and subsurface adsorption, respectively, in the whole range of coverage considered. The on-surface and subsurface oxygen bi…
The adsorption of oxygen on the Ag(001) is investigated by means of density functional techniques. Starting from a characterization of the clean silver surfaces oxygen adsorption in several modifications (molecularly, on-surface, sub-surface, Ag$_2$O) for varying coverage was studied. Besides structural parameters and adsorption energies also work-function changes, vibrational frequencies and core level energies were calculated for a better characterization of the adsorption structures and an easier comparison to the rich experimental data.
The weak-chemisorption/charge-transfer picture for adsorption of aromatic molecules over carbon nanotubes, proposed in the commented paper, is criticized.
Fabrication, handling and disposal of nuclear fuel materials require comprehensive knowledge of their surface morphology and reactivity. Due to unavoidable contact with air components (even at low partial pressures), UN samples contain considerable amount of oxygen impurities affecting fuel properties. The basic properties of O atoms adsorbed on the UN(001) surface are simulated here combining the two first principles calculation methods based on the plane wave basis set and that of the localized atomic orbitals.
X-ray powder diffraction using a synchrotron light source reveals significant modifications to both morphology and strain state in Palladium nanocubes after oxidation. Short-range strain measured by the static component of the Debye-Waller coefficient is observed to be higher in the oxidized nanoparticles; while long-range strain related to the line broadening of the diffraction peaks is seen to decrease. Using multiscale modelling with classical molecular dynamics and density functional theory, we connect the decrease in long-range strain to the increased truncation of the oxidized nanocubes,…
Liquids under confinement differ in behavior from their bulk counterparts and can acquire properties that are specific to the confined phase and linked to the nature and structure of the host matrix. While confined liquid water is not a new topic of research, the past few years have seen a series of intriguing novel features for water inside nanoscale pores. These unusual properties arise from the very specific nature of nanoporous materials: termed "soft porous crystals", they combine large-scale flexibility with a heterogeneous internal surface. This creates a rich diversity of behavior for …
Both experimental and theoretical studies of the magnetic properties of micrographite and nanographite indicate a crucial role of the partial oxidation of graphitic zigzag edges in ferromagnetism. In contrast to total and partial hydrogenation, the oxidation of half of the carbon atoms on the graphite edges transforms the antiferromagnetic exchange interaction between graphite planes and over graphite ribbons to the ferromagnetic interaction. The stability of the ferromagnetism is discussed.
We report large negative electron affinity (NEA) on diamond (100) using magnesium adsorption on a previously oxygen-terminated surface. The measured NEA is up to $(-2.01\pm0.05)$ eV, the largest reported negative electron affinity to date. Despite the expected close relationship between the surface chemistry of Mg and Li species on oxygen-terminated diamond, we observe differences in the adsorption properties between the two. Most importantly, a high-temperature annealing step is not required to activate the Mg-adsorbed surface to a state of negative electron affinity. Diamond surfaces prepare…
Large scale first-principles calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) employing two different methods (atomic orbitals and plane wave basis sets) were used to study the energetics, geometry, the electronic charge redistribution and migration for adsorbed atomic and molecular oxygen on defect-free SrTiO3(001) surfaces (both SrO- and TiO2-terminated), which serves as a prototype for many ABO3-type perovskites. Both methods predict substantial binding energies for atomic O adsorption at the bridge position between the oxygen surface ions and an adjacent metal ion. A strong chemisorpt…
We report the co-assembly and adsorption properties of coacervate complexes made from polyelectrolyte-neutral block copolymers and oppositely charged nanocolloids. The nanocolloids put under scrutiny were ionic surfactant micelles and highly charged 7 nm cerium oxide (CeO2) nanoparticles. Static and dynamic light scattering was used to investigate the microstructure and stability of the organic and hybrid complexes. The microstructure of the CeO2-based complexes was resolved using cryogenic transmission electronic microscopy (Cryo-TEM), and it revealed that the cores were clusters made from de…
Diamine-appended metal{organic frameworks (MOFs) of the form Mg2(dobpdc)(diamine)2 adsorb CO2 in a cooperative fashion, exhibiting an abrupt change in CO2 occupancy with pressure or temperature. This change is accompanied by hysteresis. While hysteresis is suggestive of a firstorder phase transition, we show that hysteretic temperature-occupancy curves associated with this material are qualitatively unlike the curves seen in the presence of a phase transition; they are instead consistent with CO2 chain polymerization, within one-dimensional channels in the MOF, in the absence of a phase transi…
Only recently, the activation of oxygen molecules on clean defect-free transition metal oxide surfaces has been reported, for example on the CaO-terminated surface of the Ruddelsden-Popper perovskite \crosurf. In this work we show that oxygen molecules adsorb as an activated superoxo species on a clean SrO-terminated surface of \srosurf. At all coverages, the electrons activating the molecule originate from the subsurface RuO$_2$ layer. At low coverages, the presence of a Ca dopant in the terminating SrO layer slightly increases the adsorption energy. At high coverage, DFT predicts a flat pote…
The increasing CO2 level is a critical concern and suitable materials are needed to capture such gases from the environment. While experimental and conventional computational methods are useful in finding such materials, they are usually slow and there is a need to expedite such processes. We use Atomistic Line Graph Neural Network (ALIGNN) method to predict CO2 adsorption in metal organic frameworks (MOF), which are known for their high functional tunability. We train ALIGNN models for hypothetical MOF (hMOF) database with 137953 MOFs with grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) based CO2 adsorpti…

The effect of oxygen adsorption on the local structure and electronic properties of monolayer graphene grown on SiC(0001) has been studied by means of Low Energy Electron Microscopy (LEEM), microprobe Low Energy Electron Diffraction (\muLEED) and microprobe Angle Resolved Photoemission (\muARPES). We show that the buffer layer of epitaxial graphene on SiC(0001) is partially decoupled after oxidation. The monitoring of the oxidation process demonstrates that the oxygen saturates the Si dangling bonds, breaks some Si-C bonds at the interface and intercalates the graphene layer. Accurate control …
The density of trap states in the bandgap of semiconducting organic single crystals has been measured quantitatively and with high energy resolution by means of the experimental method of temperature-dependent space-charge-limited-current spectroscopy (TD-SCLC). This spectroscopy has been applied to study bulk rubrene single crystals, which are shown by this technique to be of high chemical and structural quality. A density of deep trap states as low as ~ 10^{15} cm^{-3} is measured in the purest crystals, and the exponentially varying shallow trap density near the band edge could be identifie…
