X-ray powder diffraction using a synchrotron light source reveals significant modifications to both morphology and strain state in Palladium nanocubes after oxidation. Short-range strain measured by the static component of the Debye-Waller coefficient is observed to be higher in the oxidized nanoparticles; while long-range strain related to the line broadening of the diffraction peaks is seen to decrease. Using multiscale modelling with classical molecular dynamics and density functional theory, we connect the decrease in long-range strain to the increased truncation of the oxidized nanocubes, while the higher short-range strain is shown to be due to surface softening from oxygen adsorption. Different surface disorder on different crystallographic facets lead to opposing trends for oxygen activation on the different exposed surfaces of the truncated nanoparticles.
The structural, electronic and optical properties of Si nanocrystals of different size and shape, passivated with hydrogens, OH groups, or embedded in a SiO2 matrix are studied. The comparison between the embedded and free, suspended nanocrystals shows that the silica matrix produces a strain on the embedded NCs, that contributes to determine the band gap value. By including the strain on the hydroxided nanocrystals we are able to reproduce the electronic and optical properties of the full Si/SiO2 systems. Moreover we found that, while the quantum confinement dominates in the hydrogenated nano…
We show a general two-step method to grow hydroxide and oxide nanocrystals of the iron family elements (Ni, Co, Fe) on graphene with two degrees of oxidation. Drastically different nanocrystal growth behaviors were observed on low-oxidation graphene sheets (GS) and highly oxidized graphite oxide (GO) in hydrothermal reactions. Small particles pre-coated on GS with few oxygen-containing surface groups diffused and recrystallized into single-crystalline nickel hydroxide Ni(OH)2 hexagonal nanoplates or iron oxide Fe2O3 nanorods with well defined morphologies. In contrast, particles pre-coated on …
Both experimental and theoretical studies of the magnetic properties of micrographite and nanographite indicate a crucial role of the partial oxidation of graphitic zigzag edges in ferromagnetism. In contrast to total and partial hydrogenation, the oxidation of half of the carbon atoms on the graphite edges transforms the antiferromagnetic exchange interaction between graphite planes and over graphite ribbons to the ferromagnetic interaction. The stability of the ferromagnetism is discussed.
The effect of oxygen adsorption on the local structure and electronic properties of monolayer graphene grown on SiC(0001) has been studied by means of Low Energy Electron Microscopy (LEEM), microprobe Low Energy Electron Diffraction (\muLEED) and microprobe Angle Resolved Photoemission (\muARPES). We show that the buffer layer of epitaxial graphene on SiC(0001) is partially decoupled after oxidation. The monitoring of the oxidation process demonstrates that the oxygen saturates the Si dangling bonds, breaks some Si-C bonds at the interface and intercalates the graphene layer. Accurate control …
First principles density functional calculations are used to study the early oxidation stages of the Mg(0001) surface for oxygen coverages 1/16 <= Theta <= 3 monolayers. It is found that at very low coverages O is incorporated below the topmost Mg layer in tetrahedral sites. At higher oxygen-load the binding in on-surface sites is increased but at one monolayer coverage the on-surface binding is still about 60 meV weaker than for subsurface sites. The subsurface octahedral sites are found to be unfavorable compared to subsurface tetrahedral sites and to on-surface sites. At higher coverages ox…
We study the interactions between Fe(II) aqua complexes and surfaces of goethite (alpha-FeOOH) by means of density functional theory calculations including the so-called Hubbard U correction to the exchange-correlation functional. Using a thermodynamic approach, we find that (110) and (021) surfaces in contact with aqueous solutions are almost equally stable, despite the evident needlelike shape of goethite crystals indicating substantially different reactivity of the two faces. We thus suggest that crystal anisotropy may result from different growth rates due to virtually barrierless adsorpti…
The study of the interaction between graphene oxide and arsenic is of great relevance towards the development of adsorbent materials and as a way to understand how these two materials interact in the environment. In this work we show that As(III) adsorption, primarily H3AsO3, by graphene oxide is dependent on its degree of oxidation. Variations in the concentration of potassium permanganate resulted in an increase on the C/O ratio from 1.98 to 1.35 with C-OH and C-O-C concentrations of 18 and 32%, respectively. Three oxidation degrees were studied, the less oxidized material reached a maximum …
The preferred location of boron and phosphorus in oxidized free-standing Si nanoparticles was investigated using a first-principles density functional approach. The calculated formation energies indicate that P should segregate to the silicon core, whereas B is equally stable in the Si and SiO_2 regions. Our models thus suggest that, in contrast with nanocrystals with H-terminated surfaces, the efficiency of phosphorus incorporation in oxidized Si nanoparticles can be improved by thermal annealing.
Thiolate-protected gold nanoclusters represent atomically well-defined active centers for catalysis with resolved crystal structures, enabling the creation of a homogeneous and defined surface. The correlation of characterization via FT-IR spectroscopy with kinetics studies gives insight into the gold clusters activity and tests their utilization to bridge the gap between organometallic complex-based homogenous catalysis and nanoparticle based heterogeneous catalysis as well as the gap between the bulk crystal structure model catalysis and real-world catalysis.
Generally adopted design strategies for enhancing the photocatalytic activity are aimed at tuning properties such as the visible light response, the exposed crystal facets, and the nanocrystal shape. Here, we present a different approach for designing efficient photocatalysts displaying a substrate-specific reactivity upon defect engineering. The defective anisotropic brookite TiO2 photocatalyst functionalized with Pt nanocrystals are tested for alcohol photoreforming showing up to an 11-fold increase in methanol oxidation rate, compared to the unreduced one, whilst presenting much lower ethan…
We demonstrate that by means of a local top-gate current oscillations can be observed in extended, monolayered films assembled from monodisperse metal nanocrystals -- realizing transistor function. The oscillations in this metal-based system are due to the occurrence of a Coulomb energy gap in the nanocrystals which is tunable via the nanocrystal size. The nanocrystal assembly by the Langmuir-Blodgett method yields homogeneous monolayered films over vast areas. The dielectric oxide layer protects the metal nanocrystal field-effect transistors from oxidation and leads to stable function for mon…
The extent of irreversible deactivation of Pt towards hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) due to sulfur adsorption and subsequent electrochemical oxidation is quantified in a functional PEM fuel cell. At 70 °C, sequential hydrogen sulfide (H2S) exposure and electrochemical oxidation experiments indicate that as much as 6% of total Pt sites are deactivated per monolayer sulfur adsorption at open circuit potential of a PEM fuel cell followed by its removal. The extent of such deactivation is much higher when the electrode is exposed to H2S when the fuel cell is operating at a finite load, and is d…
Antimonene, a new group-VA 2D semiconducting material beyond phosphorene, was recently synthesized through various approaches and was shown to exhibit a good structural integrity in ambient conditions and various interesting properties. In this work, we perform systematical first-principles investigations on the interactions of antimonene with the small molecules CO, NO, NO2, H2O, O2, NH3 and H2. It is found that NO, NO2, H2O, O2, and NH3 serve as charge acceptors, while CO shows a negligible charge transfer. H2 acts as a charge donor to antimonene with the amount of charge transfer being ten …
We study the atomic oxygen adsorption on Pb(111) surface by using density-functional theory within the generalized gradient approximation and a supercell approach. The atomic and energetic properties of purely on-surface and subsurface oxygen structures at the Pb(111) surface are systematically investigated for a wide range of coverages and adsorption sites. The fcc and tetra-II sites (see the text for definition) are found to be energetically preferred for the on-surface and subsurface adsorption, respectively, in the whole range of coverage considered. The on-surface and subsurface oxygen bi…
Colloidal zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles are frequently used in the field of organic photovoltaics for the realization of solution-producible, electron-selective interfacial layers. Despite of the widespread use, there is a lack of detailed investigations regarding the impact of structural properties of the particles on the device performance. In this work, ZnO nanoparticles with varying surface-area-to-volume ratio were synthesized and implemented into polymer-fullerene bulk heterojunction solar cells with a gas-permeable top electrode. By comparing the electrical characteristics before and a…
We report static and dynamic first-principles calculations that provide atomistic pictures of the initial stage of the oxidation processes occurring at the ($11\bar20$) surface of 4H-SiC. Our results unveil reaction pathways and their associated free-energy barriers for the adsorption of oxygen and the desorption of carbon atoms. We find that oxygen adsorption shows structural multi-stability and that the surface-bridge sites are the most stable and crucial sites for subsequent oxidation. We find that an approaching O$_2$ molecule is adsorbed, then dissociated and finally migrates toward these…
The design of better heterogeneous catalysts for applications such as fuel cells and electrolyzers requires a mechanistic understanding of electrocatalytic reactions and the dependence of their activity on operating conditions such as pH. A satisfactory explanation for the unexpected pH dependence of electrochemical properties of platinum surfaces has so far remained elusive, with previous explanations resorting to complex co-adsorption of multiple species and resulting in limited predictive power. This knowledge gap suggests that the fundamental properties of these catalysts are not yet under…

This work provides a systematic study on the interactions of arsenene with the small molecules, including H2, NH3, O2, H2O, NO, and NO2. It is predicted that O2, H2O, NO, and NO2 are strong acceptors, while NH3 serves as a donor. Importantly, it is shown a negligible charge transfer between H2 and arsenene …

The formation of a hydroxylated native oxide layer on Si(001) under wet conditions is studied by means of first principles molecular dynamics simulations. Water molecules are found to adsorb and dissociate on the oxidised surface leading to rupture of Si-O bonds and producing reactive sites for attack by dissolved dioxygen or hydrogen peroxide molecules. Tensile strain is found to enhance the driving force for the dissociative adsorption of water, suggesting that similar reactions could be responsible for environmentally-driven sub-critical crack propagation in silicon.
In this work, we report X-ray photoelectron (XPS) and valence band (VB) spectroscopy measurements of surfactant-free silver nanoparticles and silver/linear carbon chains (Ag@LCC) structures prepared by pulse laser ablation (PLA) in water. Our measurements demonstrate significant oxidation only on the surfaces of the silver nanoparticles with many covalent carbon-silver bonds but only negligible traces of carbon-oxygen bonds. Theoretical modeling also provides evidence of the formation of robust carbon-silver bonds between linear carbon chains and pure and partially oxidized silver surfaces. A …

The interface chemistry of silicon nanocrystals (NCs) embedded in amorphous oxide matrix is studied through molecular dynamics simulations with the chemical environment described by the reactive force field model. Our results indicate that the Si NC-oxide interface is more involved than the previously proposed schemes which were based on solely simple bridge or double bonds. We identify different types of three-coordinated oxygen complexes, previously not noted. The abundance and the charge distribution of each oxygen complex is determined as a function of the NC size as well as the transition…
There is currently a renewed interest for improving household and personal care formulations to provide more environment friendly products. Fabric conditioners used as softeners have to fulfill a number of stability and biodegradability requirements. They should also display significant adsorption on cotton in the conditions of use. The quantification of surfactant adsorption remains however difficult because the fabric woven structure is complex and deposited amounts are generally small. Here we propose a method to evaluate cellulose/sur-factant interactions with increased detection sensitivi…
Graphene is an ultrathin material, which allows us to control surface phenomena by means of field-effect gating. Among various surface phenomena, photo-oxidation is known to be a facile method to largely control the electronic structure of graphene. In this study, gate controllability of photo-oxidation of graphene is thoroughly examined using a field-effect-transistor configuration. The presence of water molecules enhances gate controllability, which can be explained using water-oxygen co-adsorption picture. In addition, the photo-oxidation reaction evolves from the edge and proceeds towards …
Understanding surface reactivity is crucial in many fields, going from heterogeneous catalysis to materials oxidation and corrosion. In order to decipher the surface reactions of ZrB2 exposed to the harsh environment of aerospace components, the chemical activity of both Zr- and B-surfaces is predicted and compared by using density functional theory and nudged elastic band methods. In particular the adsorption, dissociation and diffusion of O2, CO and H2O are extensively examined through the calculation of surface adsorption energies and reaction pathways. We find the dissociative adsorption o…
By simulating the dissociation of O2 molecules on the Be(0001) surface using the first-principles molecular dynamics approach, we propose a new atomistic model for the surface oxidation of sp metals. In our model, only the dissociation of the first oxygen molecule needs to overcome an energy barrier, while the subsequent oxygen molecules dissociate barrierlessly around the adsorption area. Consequently, oxide islands form on the metal surface, and grow up in a lateral way. We also discover that the firstly dissociated oxygen atoms are not so mobile on the Be(0001) surface, as on the Al(111) su…
We present an ab initio investigation of the interaction between methane, its dehydrogenated forms and the cerium oxide surface. In particular, the stoichiometric CeO2(111) surface and the one with oxygen vacancies are considered. We study the geometries, energetics and electronic structures of various configurations of these molecules adsorbed on the surface in vacuum, and we extend the analysis to realistic environmental conditions. A phase diagram of the adsorbate-surface system is constructed and relevant transition phases are analyzed in detail, showing the conditions where partial oxidat…
Epitaxial silicene, which is one single layer of silicon atoms packed in a honeycomb structure, demonstrates a strong interaction with the substrate that dramatically affects its electronic structure. The role of electronic coupling in the chemical reactivity between the silicene and the substrate is still unclear so far, which is of great importance for functionalization of silicene layers. Here, we report the reconstructions and hybridized electronic structures of epitaxial 4x4 silicene on Ag(111), which are revealed by scanning tunneling microscopy and angle-resolved photoemission spectrosc…
The diffusion of superoxide radical anions on the surface of TiO2 catalysts is theoretically considered as an important step in the kinetics of photocatalytic oxidation of toxic pollutants. A detailed analysis is performed to discriminate the effects of rotation, anion and adsorption bonds vibrations on the diffusion coefficient. A resonant dependence of the diffusivity on the lattice parameters of the TiO2 surface is discovered showing that the most rapid diffusion takes place when the lattice parameters are twice larger than the bond length of the superoxide radical anions. Whereas the rotat…
Surface Van Hove singularity (SVHS), defined as the surface states near the Fermi level (EF) in low-dimensional systems, triggers exciting physical phenomena distinct from bulk. We herein explore theoretically the potential role of SVHS in catalysis taking CO oxidation reaction as prototype over graphene/Ca2N (Gra/Ca2N) heterojunction and Pt2HgSe3 (001) surface. It is demonstrated that both systems with SVHS could serve as an electron bath to promote O2 adsorption and subsequent CO oxidation with low energy barriers of 0.2 ~ 0.6 eV for Gra/Ca2N and Pt2HgSe3 (001) surface. Importantly, the cata…

The structural, vibrational, energetic and electronic properties of hydrogen at the stoichiometric RuO2(110) termination are studied using density functional theory. The oxide surface is found to stabilize both molecular and dissociated H2. The most stable configuration in form of hydroxyl groups (monohydrides) at the undercoordinated O^br surface anions is at low temperatures accessed via a molecular state at the undercoordinated Ru^cus atoms (dihydrogen) and a second precursor in form of a water-like species (dihydride) at the O^br sites. This complex picture of the low-temperature dissociat…
To estimate the field-emission current density of a germanium/silicon heterosystem, 20-nm Ge/Si(100) were grown by molecular beam epitaxy. The surface of one sample was covered with a layer of antimony, which was removed in vacuum prior to the samples being measured. A second sample of Ge/Si was exposed to room air in the absence of antimony. The current-voltage characteristics of both samples obtained by scanning tunneling microscopy were discovered to be in agreement with classical Fowler-Nordheim theory. The density of emission current from Ge nanocrystal exceeds the density of emission cur…
Silicene monolayers grown on Ag(111) surfaces demonstrate a band gap that is tunable by oxygen adatoms from semimetallic to semiconducting type. By using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy, it is found that the adsorption configurations and amounts of oxygen adatoms on the silicene surface are critical for band-gap engineering, which is dominated by different buckled structures in R13xR13, 4x4, and 2R3x2R3 silicene layers. The Si-O-Si bonds are the most energy-favored species formed on R13xR13, 4x4, and 2R3x2R3 structures under oxidation, which is verified by in-situ Raman spectrosc…
Surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) was used to probe the surface chemistry of chlorine-terminated silicon nanocrystal (Si-NC) surfaces in an air-free environment. SERS effect was observed from the thin films of Ag$_x$O using 514 nm laser wavelength. When a monolayer of Si-NCs were spin-coated on Ag$_x$O SERS substrates, a very clear signal of surface states, including Si-Cl$_x$, and Si-H$_x$ were observed. Upon air-exposure, we observed the temporal reduction of Si-Cl$_x$ peak intensity, and a development of oxidation-related peak intensities, like Si-O$_x$ and Si-O-H$_x$. In addition,…
Surface states refer to electronic states emerging as a solid material terminates at a surface, and can be present in many systems. Despite their spatial proximity to material surfaces, surface states have been largely overlooked in fundamental understanding of surface catalysis and potential real-world applications, because of their vulnerability to local impurities or defects. In contrast, the recently discovered three-dimensional topological insulators (3DTI) have exceptionally robust metallic surface states that are topologically protected against surface contamination and imperfection. Th…
The activity and stability of a platinum nanoparticle (NP) is not only affected by its size but additionally depends on its shape. To this end, simulations can identify structure-property relationships to make a priori decisions on the most promising structures. While activity is routinely probed by electronic structure calculations on simplified surface models, modeling the stability of NP model systems in electrochemical reactions is challenging due to the long timescale of relevant processes such as oxidation beyond the point of reversibility. In this work, a routine for simulating electroc…
Ab initio calculations within the density-functional theory formalism are performed to investigate the ground state, electric charge doping, and electronic properties of titanium and titanium dioxide monolayers adsorbed on a graphene surface. A new ground state structrure of Ti monolayer adsorbed on graphene is reported which is shown to be stable up to T = 500 K. Effects due to lower and higher Ti adatoms coverage are studied. We find that the adsorbed Ti provides a strong n-type doping which supports recent experimental observations. On the other hand, TiO_2 can induce both p- and n-type dop…
This paper reports state-of-the-art electronic structure calculations of La adsorption on the Si(001) surface. We predict La chains in the low coverage limit, which condense in a stable phase at a coverage of 1/5 monolayer. At 1/3 monolayer we predict a chemically rather inert, stable phase. La changes its oxidation state from La(3+) at lower coverages to La(2+) at coverages beyond 1/3 monolayer. In the latter oxidation state, one electron resides in a state with a considerable contribution from La-d and f states.
We show that the optical and electronic properties of nanocrystalline silicon can be efficiently tuned using impurity doping. In particular, we give evidence, by means of ab-initio calculations, that by properly controlling the doping with either one or two atomic species, a significant modification of both the absorption and the emission of light can be achieved. We have considered impurities, either boron or phosphorous (doping) or both (codoping), located at different substitutional sites of silicon nanocrystals with size ranging from 1.1 nm to 1.8 nm in diameter. We have found that the cod…

The effects of oxygen adsorption on the reflectance anisotropy spectrum (RAS) of reconstructed Si(100):O surfaces at sub-monolayer coverage (first stages of oxidation) have been studied by an ab initio DFT-LDA scheme within a plane-wave, norm-conserving pseudopotential approach. Dangling bonds and the main features of the characteristic RAS of the clean Si(100) surface are mostly preserved after oxidation of 50% of the surface dimers, with some visible changes: a small red shift of the first peak, and the appearance of a distinct spectral structure at about 1.5 eV. The electronic transitions i…
The oxidized Ag(111) surface has been studied by a combination of experimental and theoretical methods, scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and density functional theory (DFT). A large variety of different surface structures is found, depending on the detailed preparation conditions. The observed structures fall into four classes: (a) individually chemisorbed atomic oxygen atoms, (b) three different oxygen overlayer structures, including the well-known p(4 x 4) phase, formed from the same Ag$_6$ and Ag$_{10}$ building blocks, (c) a c(4 x 8) structure no…
Charge transfer plays the central role in chemisorption and chemical reactions at metal surfaces. The Somorjai group in Nano. Lett. {\bf 9}, 3930 (2009) has reported a chemicurrent, a flux of charge carriers in response to $\mathrm{H_2}$ oxidation by $\mathrm{O_2}$ into $\mathrm{H_2O}$ over a platinum surface. The nature of the chemicurrent has been debated in the literature; explanations both extrinsic and intrinsic to the reaction mechanism have been offered. This article suggests a picture behind the chemicurrent experiments, which is intrinsic to the mechanism of hydrogen oxidation in a hi…
The results of DFT supercell calculations of oxygen behavior upon the UN (001) and (110) surfaces as well as at the tilt grain boundary are presented. Oxygen adsorption, migration, incorporation into the surface N vacancies on (001) and (110) surfaces have been modeled using 2D slabs of different thicknesses and supercell sizes. The temperature dependences of the N vacancy formation energies and oxygen incorporation energies are calculated. We demonstrate that O atoms easily penetrate into UN surfaces and grain boundaries containing N vacancies, due to negative incorporation energies and a sma…
Role of Oxygen during Methane Oxidation on Pd$_1$/PdO$_1$@CeO$_2$ Surface: A Combined Density Functional Theory, Microkinetic, and Machine Learning Approach
To help provide insight into the remarkable catalytic behavior of the oxygen/silver system for heterogeneous oxidation reactions, purely sub-surface oxygen, and structures involving both on-surface and sub-surface oxygen, as well as oxide-like structures at the Ag(111) surface have been studied for a wide range of coverages and adsorption sites using density-functional theory. Adsorption on the surface in fcc sites is energetically favorable for low coverages, while for higher coverage a thin surface-oxide structure is energetically favorable. This structure has been proposed to correspond to …
If metal surfaces are exposed to sufficiently oxygen-rich environments, oxides start to form. Important steps in this process are the dissociative adsorption of oxygen at the surface, the incorporation of O atoms into the surface, the formation of a thin oxidic overlayer and the growth of the once formed oxide film. For the oxidation process of late transition metals (TM), recent experimental and theoretical studies provided a quite intriguing atomic-scale insight: The formed initial oxidic overlayers are not merely few atomic-layer thin versions of the known bulk oxides, but can exhibit struc…
