We show a general two-step method to grow hydroxide and oxide nanocrystals of the iron family elements (Ni, Co, Fe) on graphene with two degrees of oxidation. Drastically different nanocrystal growth behaviors were observed on low-oxidation graphene sheets (GS) and highly oxidized graphite oxide (GO) in hydrothermal reactions. Small particles pre-coated on GS with few oxygen-containing surface groups diffused and recrystallized into single-crystalline nickel hydroxide Ni(OH)2 hexagonal nanoplates or iron oxide Fe2O3 nanorods with well defined morphologies. In contrast, particles pre-coated on GO were pinned by the high-concentration oxygen groups and defects on GO without recrystallization into well-defined shapes. Adjusting reaction temperature can be combined to further control materials grown on graphene. For materials with weak interactions with graphene, increasing the reaction temperature can lead to diffusion and recrystallization of surface species into larger crystals even on highly oxidized and defective GO. Our results suggest an interesting new approach to controlling the morphology of nanomaterials grown on graphene by tuning the surface chemistry of graphene as substrates for crystal nucleation and growth.
The structural, electronic and optical properties of Si nanocrystals of different size and shape, passivated with hydrogens, OH groups, or embedded in a SiO2 matrix are studied. The comparison between the embedded and free, suspended nanocrystals shows that the silica matrix produces a strain on the embedded NCs, that contributes to determine the band gap value. By including the strain on the hydroxided nanocrystals we are able to reproduce the electronic and optical properties of the full Si/SiO2 systems. Moreover we found that, while the quantum confinement dominates in the hydrogenated nano…
X-ray powder diffraction using a synchrotron light source reveals significant modifications to both morphology and strain state in Palladium nanocubes after oxidation. Short-range strain measured by the static component of the Debye-Waller coefficient is observed to be higher in the oxidized nanoparticles; while long-range strain related to the line broadening of the diffraction peaks is seen to decrease. Using multiscale modelling with classical molecular dynamics and density functional theory, we connect the decrease in long-range strain to the increased truncation of the oxidized nanocubes,…
The different physical properties of multilayered graphene or graphite relative to single layer graphene result from the Dirac spins symmetry in graphene and the Pauli spin symmetry in graphite. The Dirac symmetry in multilayers of graphene (graphite) is hindered by interlayer interactions. Different magnetizations, electronics and chemistry of graphite and graphene follow from absence of interlayer interactions in graphene. The distinct kinetics and dynamics of graphite and graphene by oxidation by the Hummer's method in weak external magnetic field are observed in this work. Graphite manifes…
The integration of high-k oxide on graphene using atomic layer deposition requires an electrically reliable buffer layer. In this study, Y was selected as the buffer layer due to the highest oxidation ability in rare earth elements and various oxidation methods (atmospheric, high-pressure O2 and ozone) were applied to the Y metal buffer layer. By optimizing oxidation conditions of the top gate insulator, we successfully improve the capacitance of top gate Y2O3 insulator and demonstrate a large Ion/Ioff ratio for bilayer graphene under an external electric field.
Graphene/TiO2 nanocrystals hybrid is successfully prepared by directly growing TiO2 nanocrystals on graphene oxide (GO) sheets. The direct growth of nanocrystals on GO sheets was achieved by a two-step method, in which TiO2 was coated on GO sheets by hydrolysis first and crystallized into anatase nanocrystals by hydrothermal treatment in second step. Slow hydrolysis reaction through the use of EtOH/H2O mixed solvents and addition of H2SO4 allows the selectively growing TiO2 on GO and suppressing free growth in solution. The method offers easy access to the GO/TiO2 nanocrystals hybrid with well…
We demonstrate the growth of graphene nanocrystals by molecular beam methods that employ a solid carbon source, and that can be used on a diverse class of large area dielectric substrates. Characterization by Raman and Near Edge X-ray Absorption Fine Structure spectroscopies reveal a sp2 hybridized hexagonal carbon lattice in the nanocrystals. Lower growth rates favor the formation of higher quality, larger size multi-layer graphene crystallites on all investigated substrates. The surface morphology is determined by the roughness of the underlying substrate and graphitic monolayer steps are ob…
We investigate nanoscale local anodic oxidation (LAO) on hydrogen-intercalated graphene grown by controlled sublimation of silicon carbide (SiC). Scanning probe microscopy (SPM) was used as a lithographic and characterization tool in order to investigate the local properties of the nanofabricated structures. The anomalous thickness observed after the graphene oxidation process is linked to the impact of LAO on the substrate. Micro-Raman spectroscopy was employed to demonstrate the presence of two oxidation regimes depending on the applied bias. We show that partial and total etching of monolay…
Oxygen molecules are found to exhibit non-negligible reactivity with graphene under strong light irradiation in the presence of water. The reaction is triggered by the laser Raman spectroscopy measurement itself, and the D band (ca. 1340 cm-1) becomes larger as the laser irradiation is prolonged. The electronic transport properties of the graphene derivative are also investigated and both the electron and hole mobility are found to be reduced. These results are attributed to oxidation of graphene. This primitive modification method can be exploited to manipulate the structural and electronic p…
Graphene, being an ultrathin, durable, flexible, transparent material with superior conductivity and unusual optical properties, promises many novel applications in electronics, photonics and optoelectronics. For applications in electronics, patterning and modification of electrical properties is very desirable since pristine graphene has no band gap. Here we demonstrate a simple all-optical patterning method for graphene, based on laser induced two-photon oxidation. By tuning the intensity of irradiation and the number of pulses the level of oxidation can be controlled to high precision and, …
Graphene epoxide, with oxygen atoms lining up on pristine graphene sheets, is investigated theoretically in this Letter. Two distinct phases: metastable clamped and unzipped structures are unveiled in consistence with experiments. In the stable (unzipped) phase, epoxy group breaks underneath sp2 bond and modifies the mechanical and electronic properties of graphene remarkably. The foldable epoxy ring structure reduces its Young's modulus by 42.4%, while leaves the tensile strength almost unchanged. Epoxidation also perturbs the pi state and opens semiconducting gap for both phases, with depend…
When epitaxial graphene layers are formed on SiC(0001), the first carbon layer (known as the "buffer layer"), while relatively easy to synthesize, does not have the desirable electrical properties of graphene. The conductivity is poor due to a disruption of the graphene pi-bands by covalent bonding to the SiC substrate. Here we show that it is possible to restore the graphene pi-bands by inserting a thin oxide layer between the buffer layer and SiC substrate using a low temperature, CMOS-compatible process that does not damage the graphene layer.
We propose an innovative, easy-to-implement approach to synthesize large-area singlecrystalline graphene sheets by chemical vapor deposition on copper foil. This method doubly takes advantage of residual oxygen present in the gas phase. First, by slightly oxidizing the copper surface, we induce grain boundary pinning in copper and, in consequence, the freezing of the thermal recrystallization process. Subsequent reduction of copper under hydrogen suddenly unlocks the delayed reconstruction, favoring the growth of centimeter-sized copper (111) grains through the mechanism of abnormal grain grow…
The ability to protect refined metals from reactive environments is vital to many industrial and academic applications. Current solutions, however, typically introduce several negative effects, including increased thickness and changes in the metal physical properties. In this paper, we demonstrate for the first time the ability of graphene films grown by chemical vapor deposition to protect the surface of the metallic growth substrates of Cu and Cu/Ni alloy from air oxidation. SEM, Raman spectroscopy, and XPS studies show that the metal surface is well protected from oxidation even after heat…
Catalysts for oxygen reduction and evolution reactions are at the heart of key renewable energy technologies including fuel cells and water splitting. Despite tremendous efforts, developing oxygen electrode catalysts with high activity at low costs remains a grand challenge. Here, we report a hybrid material of Co3O4 nanocrystals grown on reduced graphene oxide (GO) as a high-performance bi-functional catalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). While Co3O4 or graphene oxide alone has little catalytic activity, their hybrid exhibits an unexpected, surprisin…
Generally adopted design strategies for enhancing the photocatalytic activity are aimed at tuning properties such as the visible light response, the exposed crystal facets, and the nanocrystal shape. Here, we present a different approach for designing efficient photocatalysts displaying a substrate-specific reactivity upon defect engineering. The defective anisotropic brookite TiO2 photocatalyst functionalized with Pt nanocrystals are tested for alcohol photoreforming showing up to an 11-fold increase in methanol oxidation rate, compared to the unreduced one, whilst presenting much lower ethan…
We report the growth of Si nanostructures, either as thin films or nanoparticles, on graphene substrates. The Si nanostructures are shown to be single crystalline, air stable and oxidation resistive, as indicated by the observation of a single crystalline Si Raman mode at around 520 cm-1, a STM image of an ordered surface structure under ambient condition, and a Schottky junction with graphite. Ultra-thin silicon regions exhibit silicene-like behavior, including a Raman mode at around 550 cm-1, a triangular lattice structure in STM that has distinctly different lattice spacing from that of eit…
Hydration properties of graphene oxide (GO) are essential for most of its potential applications. In this work, we employ atomistic molecular dynamics simulations to investigate seven GO compositions with different levels of oxygenation. Two atomic charge models for GO are compared: (1) sp2 carbons are purely Lennard-Jones sites; (2) sp2 carbon charges are consistent with the CHELPG scheme. Structural properties were found to depend insignificantly on the charge model, whereas thermodynamics appeared very sensitive. In particular, the simplified model provides systematically stronger GO/water …
We demonstrate the local oxidation nanopatterning of graphene films by an atomic force microscope. The technique provides a method to form insulating trenches in graphene flakes and to fabricate nanodevices with sub-nm precision. We demonstrate fabrication of a 25-nm-wide nanoribbon and sub-micron size nanoring from a graphene flake. We also found that we can write either trenches or bumps on the graphene surface depending on the lithography conditions. We attribute the bumps to partial oxidation of the surface and incorporation of oxygen into the graphene lattice.
Patterned graphene shows substantial potential for applications in future molecular-scale integrated electronics. Environmental effects are a critical issue in a single layer material where every atom is on the surface. Especially intriguing is the variety of rich chemical interactions shown by molecular oxygen with aromatic molecules. We find that O2 etching kinetics vary strongly with the number of graphene layers in the sample. Three-layer-thick samples show etching similar to bulk natural graphite. Single-layer graphene reacts faster and shows random etch pits in contrast to natural graphi…
We have fabricated UV-sensitive photodetectors based on colloidal CdS nanocrystals and graphene. The nanocrystals act as a sensitizer layer that improves light harvesting leading to high responsivity of the detector. Despite the slow relaxation of the photogenerated charges in the nanocrystal film, faster processes allowed to detect pulses up to a repetition rate of 2 kHz. We have performed time-resolved analysis of the processes occurring in our hybrid system, and discuss possible photo-induced charge transfer mechanisms.

Graphene is an ultrathin material, which allows us to control surface phenomena by means of field-effect gating. Among various surface phenomena, photo-oxidation is known to be a facile method to largely control the electronic structure of graphene. In this study, gate controllability of photo-oxidation of graphene is thoroughly examined using a field-effect-transistor configuration. The presence of water molecules enhances gate controllability, which can be explained using water-oxygen co-adsorption picture. In addition, the photo-oxidation reaction evolves from the edge and proceeds towards …
Energy transfer from photoexcited zero-dimensional systems to metallic systems plays a prominent role in modern day materials science. A situation of particular interest concerns the interaction between a photoexcited dipole and an atomically thin metal. The recent discovery of graphene layers permits investigation of this phenomenon. Here we report a study of fluorescence from individual CdSe/ZnS nanocrystals in contact with single- and few-layer graphene sheets. The rate of energy transfer is determined from the strong quenching of the nanocrystal fluorescence. For single-layer graphene, we …
Our first principles calculations reveal that oxidative cut of graphene is realized by forming epoxy and then carbonyl pairs. Direct forming carbonyl pair to tear graphene up from an edge position is not favorable in energy. This atomic picture is valuable for developing effective graphene manipulation means. The proposed epoxy pairs may be related to some long puzzling experimental observations on graphene oxide.
We use low-energy electron microscopy to investigate how graphene is removed from Ru(0001) and Ir(111) by reaction with oxygen. We find two mechanisms on Ru(0001). At short times, oxygen reacts with carbon monomers on the surrounding Ru surface, decreasing their concentration below the equilibrium value. This undersaturation causes a flux of carbon from graphene to the monomer gas. In this initial mechanism, graphene is etched at a rate that is given precisely by the same non-linear dependence on carbon monomer concentration that governs growth. Thus, during both growth and etching, carbon att…
We report on graphene-passivated ferromagnetic electrodes (GPFE) for spin devices. GPFE are shown to act as spin-polarized oxidation-resistant electrodes. The direct coating of nickel with few layer graphene through a readily scalable chemical vapour deposition (CVD) process allows the preservation of an unoxidized nickel surface upon air exposure. Fabrication and measurement of complete reference tunneling spin valve structures demonstrates that the GPFE is maintained as a spin polarizer and also that the presence of the graphene coating leads to a specific sign reversal of the magneto-resist…
We present the effect of oxidative etching in FLG/TiO$_2$ hybrids on FLG edges chemistry/morphology addressing also the catalytic activity of TiO$_2$ NPs. According to the XPS and TGA analysis the oxidation degree strongly depends on TiO$_2$:FLG ratio. The preparation of two series of FLG/TiO$_2$ hybrids via sol-gel method and in-situ oxidation permitted to correctly describe and distinguish the chemical composition, core shift and charge distribution in C1s XPS with Tip peak as reference. Such analysis is challenging in carbon materials due the overlapping of C1s peaks from the sample and adv…
Novel route for the establishing of magnetism in realistic oxidized graphene nanoribbons is proposed. Modelling of the migration of hydroxyl groups from central part to the zig-zag edges of graphene nanoribbons passivated by oxygen are performed with using density functional theory. The presence of hydroxyl groups near the edges leads formation of dangling bonds there instead saturated due to oxidation and repairs of magnetism diminished by edges oxidation. The route of manufacturing and stability of new type of magnetic graphene nanoribbons are also discussed.
The study of the interaction between graphene oxide and arsenic is of great relevance towards the development of adsorbent materials and as a way to understand how these two materials interact in the environment. In this work we show that As(III) adsorption, primarily H3AsO3, by graphene oxide is dependent on its degree of oxidation. Variations in the concentration of potassium permanganate resulted in an increase on the C/O ratio from 1.98 to 1.35 with C-OH and C-O-C concentrations of 18 and 32%, respectively. Three oxidation degrees were studied, the less oxidized material reached a maximum …
When it is oxidized, graphite can be easily exfoliated forming graphene oxide (GO). GO is a critical intermediate for massive production of graphene, and it is also an important material with various application potentials. With many different oxidation species randomly distributed on the basal plane, GO has a complicated nonstoichiometric atomic structure that is still not well understood in spite of of intensive studies involving many experimental techniques. Controversies often exist in experimental data interpretation. We report here a first principles study on binding energy of carbon 1s …
The interface chemistry of silicon nanocrystals (NCs) embedded in amorphous oxide matrix is studied through molecular dynamics simulations with the chemical environment described by the reactive force field model. Our results indicate that the Si NC-oxide interface is more involved than the previously proposed schemes which were based on solely simple bridge or double bonds. We identify different types of three-coordinated oxygen complexes, previously not noted. The abundance and the charge distribution of each oxygen complex is determined as a function of the NC size as well as the transition…
In this work, we demonstrate that edge-oxidation of graphene can enable larger enhancement in thermal conductivity (k) of graphene-nanoplatelet (GnP)/polyetherimide (PEI) composites relative to oxidation of the basal plane of graphene. Edge oxidation (EGO) offers the advantage of leaving the basal plane of graphene intact, preserving its high in-plane thermal conductivity (kin > 2000 Wm-1K-1), while, simultaneously, the oxygen groups introduced on graphene edge enhance interfacial thermal conductance through hydrogen bonding with oxygen groups of polyetherimide (PEI), enhancing overall polymer…

The current paper presents the first attempt to recreate the origin of shungite carbon at microscopic level basing on knowledge accumulated by graphene science. The main idea of our approach is that different efficacy of chemical transformation of primarily generated graphene flakes (aromatic lamellae in geological literature), subjected to oxidation/reduction reactions in aqueous environment, lays the foundation of the difference in graphite and shungite derivation under natural conditions. Low-efficient reactions in the case of graphite do not prevent from the formation of large graphite lay…
We offer a brief overview of the solvent-based graphene production and summarize the current knowledge on the formation mechanism of graphite oxide that proceeds via graphite intercalation compounds. In addition, the results of our in situ X-ray diffraction investigation into this process are presented, discussed and contrasted to the findings by other authors, who employed the same oxidation protocol but examined the samples by ex situ X-ray diffraction. Our results suggest that, contrary to the numerous reports by other authors, no strong crystalline order, unique to graphite intercalation c…
Oxygen reduction/evolution reaction (ORR/OER) is a basic process for fuel cells or metal air batteries. However, ORR/OER generally requires noble metal catalysts and suffers from low solubility (10-3 molar per liter) of O2, low kinetics rate (10-6 cm2/s) and low reversibility. We report a manganese reduction/oxidation reaction (MRR/MOR) on graphene/MnO2 composites, delivering a high capacity (4200 mAh/g), fast kinetics (0.0024 cm2/s, three orders higher than ORR/OER), high solubility (three orders than O2), and high reversibility (100%). We further use MRR/MOR to invent a rechargeable manganes…
Two different types of boron-doped graphene/copper interfaces synthesized using two different flow rates of Ar through the bubbler containing the boron source were studied. X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) and optically stimulated electron emission (OSEE) measurements have demonstrated that boron-doped graphene coating provides a high corrosion resistivity of Cu-substrate with the light traces of the oxidation of carbon cover. The density functional theory calculations suggest that for the case of substitutional (graphitic) boron-defect only the oxidation near boron impurity is energetically …
Although the high impermeability of graphene makes it an excellent barrier to inhibit metal oxidation and corrosion, graphene can form a galvanic cell with the underlying metal that promotes corrosion of the metal in the long term. Boron nitride (BN) nanosheets which have a similar impermeability could be a better choice as protective barrier, because they are more thermally and chemically stable than graphene and, more importantly, do not cause galvanic corrosion due to their electrical insulation. In this study, the performance of commercially available BN nanosheets grown by chemical vapor …
Based on density functional calculations, we demonstrate a significant difference in oxidation patterns between graphene and graphite and the formation of defects after oxidation. Step-by-step modeling demonstrates that oxidation of 80% of the graphite surface is favorable. Oxidation above half of the graphite surface significantly decreases the energy costs of vacancy formation with CO2 production. The presence of water is crucial in the transformation of epoxy groups to hydroxyl, the intercalation with further bundle and exfoliation. In water-rich conditions, water intercalates graphite at t…
Surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) was used to probe the surface chemistry of chlorine-terminated silicon nanocrystal (Si-NC) surfaces in an air-free environment. SERS effect was observed from the thin films of Ag$_x$O using 514 nm laser wavelength. When a monolayer of Si-NCs were spin-coated on Ag$_x$O SERS substrates, a very clear signal of surface states, including Si-Cl$_x$, and Si-H$_x$ were observed. Upon air-exposure, we observed the temporal reduction of Si-Cl$_x$ peak intensity, and a development of oxidation-related peak intensities, like Si-O$_x$ and Si-O-H$_x$. In addition,…
We have studied magnetization of graphene nanocrystals obtained by sonic exfoliation of graphite. No ferromagnetism is detected at any temperature down to 2 K. Neither do we find strong paramagnetism expected due to the massive amount of edge defects. Rather, graphene is strongly diamagnetic, similar to graphite. Our nanocrystals exhibit only a weak paramagnetic contribution noticeable below 50K. The measurements yield a single species of defects responsible for the paramagnetism, with approximately one magnetic moment per typical graphene crystallite.
Three typical one-dimensional (1D)/quasi-1D nanocarbons, linear carbon chains, carbon nanotubes, and graphene nanoribbons have been proven to grow inside single-wall carbon nanotubes. This gives rise to three types of hybrid materials whose behaviour and properties compared among each other are far from understood. After proving successful the synthesis of these nanostructured materials in recently published work, we have now been able to study their oxidation stability systematically by using resonance Raman spectroscopy. Surprisingly, the linear carbon chains, which have been theoretically p…
Graphene oxide (GO) flakes have been deposited to bridge the gap between two epitaxial graphene electrodes to produce all-graphene devices. Electrical measurements indicate the presence of Schottky barriers (SB) at the graphene/graphene oxide junctions, as a consequence of the band-gap in GO. The barrier height is found to be about 0.7 eV, and is reduced after annealing at 180 $^\circ$C, implying that the gap can be tuned by changing the degree of oxidation. A lower limit of the GO mobility was found to be 850 cm$^2$/Vs, rivaling silicon. {\it In situ} local oxidation of patterned epitaxial gr…
The effect of oxygen adsorption on the local structure and electronic properties of monolayer graphene grown on SiC(0001) has been studied by means of Low Energy Electron Microscopy (LEEM), microprobe Low Energy Electron Diffraction (\muLEED) and microprobe Angle Resolved Photoemission (\muARPES). We show that the buffer layer of epitaxial graphene on SiC(0001) is partially decoupled after oxidation. The monitoring of the oxidation process demonstrates that the oxygen saturates the Si dangling bonds, breaks some Si-C bonds at the interface and intercalates the graphene layer. Accurate control …
We have systematically investigated the effect of oxidation on the structural and electronic properties of graphene based on first-principles calculations. Energetically favorable atomic configurations and building blocks are identified, which contain epoxide and hydroxyl groups in close proximity with each other. Different arrangements of these units yield an LDA band gap over a range of a few eV. These results suggest the possibility of creating and tuning the band gap in graphene by varying the oxidation level and the relative amount of epoxide and hydroxyl functional groups on the surface.
Chemical oxidation of multilayer graphene grown on silicon carbide yields films exhibiting reproducible characteristics, lateral uniformity, smoothness over large areas, and manageable chemical complexity, thereby opening opportunities to accelerate both fundamental understanding and technological applications of this form of graphene oxide films. Here, we investigate the vertical inter-layer structure of these ultra-thin oxide films. X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, and IR experiments show that the multilayer films exhibit excellent inter-layer registry, little amount (<10%) of int…
Applying to graphene oxides, molecular theory of graphene is based on the oxide molecular origin when it is considered as a final product in the succession of a graphene molecule polyderivatives related to a particular oxidation reaction. The graphene oxide structure is created in due course of calculations following the algorithms that take into account the graphene molecules natural radicalization, correlation of odd electrons, an extremely strong influence of structure on properties, a sharp response of the molecule behavior on small action of external factors. Taking together, the theory f…
Surface Van Hove singularity (SVHS), defined as the surface states near the Fermi level (EF) in low-dimensional systems, triggers exciting physical phenomena distinct from bulk. We herein explore theoretically the potential role of SVHS in catalysis taking CO oxidation reaction as prototype over graphene/Ca2N (Gra/Ca2N) heterojunction and Pt2HgSe3 (001) surface. It is demonstrated that both systems with SVHS could serve as an electron bath to promote O2 adsorption and subsequent CO oxidation with low energy barriers of 0.2 ~ 0.6 eV for Gra/Ca2N and Pt2HgSe3 (001) surface. Importantly, the cata…
Layered indium selenide (InSe), a new two-dimensional (2D) material with a hexagonal structure and semiconducting characteristic, is gaining increasing attention owing to its intriguing electronic properties. Here, by using first-principles calculations, we reveal that perfect InSe possesses a high chemical stability against oxidation, superior to MoS2. However, the presence of intrinsic Se vacancy (VSe) and light illumination can markedly affect the surface activity. In particular, the excess electrons associated with the exposed In atoms at the VSe site under illumination are able to remarka…
Single-atom catalysts (SACs) are rapidly developing in various application areas, including electrocatalysis of different reactions, usually taking place under harsh pH-electrode potential conditions. Thus, a full atomic-level understanding of the nature of the active sites under realistic electrochemical conditions is needed, having in mind that the state of SACs active centers could be altered by the adsorption of spectating species. In this contribution, Density Functional Theory is employed to conduct thermodynamic analysis of SACs with metal atoms (Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Ru, Rh, Pd, Ag, Ir, …
Atomically thin boron nitride (BN) is an important two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterial, with many properties distinct from graphene. In this feature article, these unique properties and associated applications often not possible from graphene are outlined. The article starts with characterization and identification of atomically thin BN. It is followed by demonstrating their strong oxidation resistance at high temperatures and applications in protecting metals from oxidation and corrosion. As flat insulators, BN nanosheets are ideal dielectric substrates for surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (…
The near-field Coulomb interaction between a nano-emitter and a graphene monolayer results in strong Förster-type resonant energy transfer and subsequent fluorescence quenching. Here, we investigate the distance dependence of the energy transfer rate from individual, i) zero-dimensional CdSe/CdS nanocrystals and ii) two-dimensional CdSe/CdS/ZnS nanoplatelets to a graphene monolayer. For increasing distances $d$, the energy transfer rate from individual nanocrystals to graphene decays as $1/d^4$. In contrast, the distance dependence of the energy transfer rate from a two-dimensional nanoplatele…
