TxGraffiti is an automated conjecturing program that produces graph theoretic conjectures in the form of conjectured inequalities. This program written and maintained by the second author since 2017 was inspired by the successes of previous automated conjecturing programs including Fajtlowicz's GRAFFITI and DeLaViña's GRAFFITI.pc. In this paper we prove and generalize several conjectures generated by TxGraffiti when it was prompted to conjecture on the \emph{independence number}, the \emph{domination number}, and the \emph{matching number} (and generalizations of each of these graph invariants). Moreover, in several instances we also show the proposed inequalities relating these graph invariants are sharp.
After $2$-crossing-critical graphs were characterized in 2016, their most general subfamily, large $3$-connected $2$-crossing-critical graphs, has attracted separate attention. This paper presents sharp upper and lower bounds for their domination and independence number.
We propose new bounds on the domination number and on the independence number of a graph and show that our bounds compare favorably to recent ones. Our bounds are obtained by using the Bhatia-Davis inequality linking the variance, the expected value, the minimum, and the maximum of a random variable with bounded distribution.
An edge dominating set $F$ of a graph $G=(V,E)$ is an \textit{edge cut dominating set} if the subgraph $\langle V,G-F \rangle$ is disconnected. The \textit{edge cut domination number} $γ_{ct}(G)$ of $G$ is the minimum cardinality of an edge cut dominating set of $G.$ In this paper we study the edge cut domination number and investigate its relationships with other parameters of graphs. We also introduce the properties edge cut irredundance and edge cut independence.
For a sequence $d$ of non-negative integers, let ${\cal F}(d)$ be the set of all forests whose degree sequence is $d$. We present closed formulas for $γ_{\max}^{\cal F}(d)=\max\{ γ(F):F\in {\cal F}(d)\}$ and $α_{\min}^{\cal F}(d)=\min\{ α(F):F\in {\cal F}(d)\}$ where $γ(F)$ and $α(F)$ are the domination number and the independence number of a forest $F$, respectively.
Given a partition ${\mathcal V}=(V_1, \ldots,V_m)$ of the vertex set of a graph $G$, an {\em independent transversal} (IT) is an independent set in $G$ that contains one vertex from each $V_i$. A {\em fractional IT} is a non-negative real valued function on $V(G)$ that represents each part with total weight at least $1$, and belongs as a vector to the convex hull of the incidence vectors of independent sets in the graph. It is known that if the domination number of the graph induced on the union of every $k$ parts $V_i$ is at least $k$, then there is a fractional IT. We prove a weighted versio…
A graph $G$ is said to be $k$-$γ_{c}$-critical if the connected domination number $γ_{c}(G) = k$ and $γ_{c}(G + uv) < k$ for every $uv \in E(\overline{G})$. Let $δ, κ$ and $α$ be respectively the minimum degree, the connectivity and the independence number. In this paper, we show that a $3$-$γ_{c}$-critical graph $G$ satisfies $α\leq κ+ 2$. Moreover, if $κ\geq 3$, then $α= κ+ p$ if and only if $α= δ+ p$ for all $p \in \{1, 2\}$. We show that the condition $κ+ 1 \leq α\leq κ+ 2$ is best possible to prove that $κ= δ$. By these result, we conclude our paper with an open problem on Hamiltonian con…
The Grundy domination number, ${γ_{\rm gr}}(G)$, of a graph $G$ is the maximum length of a sequence $(v_1,v_2,\ldots, v_k)$ of vertices in $G$ such that for every $i\in \{2,\ldots, k\}$, the closed neighborhood $N[v_i]$ contains a vertex that does not belong to any closed neighborhood $N[v_j]$, where $j<i$. It is well known that the Grundy domination number of any graph $G$ is greater than or equal to the upper domination number $Γ(G)$, which is in turn greater than or equal to the independence number $α(G)$. In this paper, we initiate the study of the class of graphs $G$ with $Γ(G)={γ_{\rm gr…
A set $S$ of vertices in a graph $G = (V, E)$ is called {\em cycle independent} if the induced subgraph $\langle S\rangle$ is acyclic, and called {\em odd-cycle indepdendet} if $\langle S\rangle$ is bipartite. A set $S$ is {\em cycle dominating} (resp. {\em odd-cycle dominating}) if for every vertex $u \in V \setminus S$ there exists a vertex $v \in S$ such that $u$ and $v$ are contained in a (resp. odd cycle) cycle in $\langle S \setminus \{u\}\rangle$. A set $S$ is {\em cycle irredundant} (resp. odd-cycle irredundant) if for every vertex $v \in S$ there exists a vertex $u \in V \setminus S$ …
A dominating set in a graph $G$ is a set $S$ of vertices such that every vertex that does not belong to $S$ is adjacent to a vertex in $S$. The domination number $γ(G)$ of $G$ is the minimum cardinality of a dominating set of $G$. The common independence number $α_c(G)$ of $G$ is the greatest integer $r$ such that every vertex of $G$ belongs to some independent set of cardinality at least~$r$. The common independence number is squeezed between the independent domination number $i(G)$ and the independence number $α(G)$ of $G$, that is, $γ(G) \le i(G) \le α_c(G) \le α(G)$. A graph $G$ is dominat…
In 1978, Kulli and Janakiram \citep{KulliJanakiramSplit} defined the split dominating set: a dominating set $S$ of vertices in a graph $G = (V, E)$ is called {\em split dominating} if the induced subgraph $\langle V \setminus S\rangle$ is either disconnected or a $K_1$. In this paper we introduce the properties split independence and split irredundance. A set $S$ of vertices in a graph $G =(V,E)$ is called a {\em split independent set} if $S$ is independent and the induced subgraph $\langle V \setminus S \rangle$ is either disconnected or a $K_1$. A set $S$ of vertices in a graph $G = (V,E)$ i…
A $k$-$γ_{c}$-edge critical graph is a graph $G$ with the connected domination number $γ_{c}(G) = k$ and $γ_{c}(G + uv) < k$ for every $uv \in E(\overline{G})$. Further, a $2$-connected graph $G$ is said to be $k$-$γ_{c}$-vertex critical if $γ_{c}(G) = k$ and $γ_{c}(G - v) < k$ for all $v \in V(G)$. A maximal $k$-$γ_{c}$-vertex critical graph is a graph which are both $k$-$γ_{c}$-edge critical and $k$-$γ_{c}$-vertex critical. Let $κ, δ, ω$ and $α$ be respectively connectivity minimum degree, clique number and independence number. In this paper, we prove that every maximal $3$-$γ_{c}$-vertex cr…
An independent dominating set of the simple graph $G=(V,E)$ is a vertex subset that is both dominating and independent in $G$. The independent domination polynomial of a graph $G$ is the polynomial $D_i(G,x)=\sum_{A} x^{|A|}$, summed over all independent dominating subsets $A\subseteq V$. A root of $D_i(G,x)$ is called an independence domination root. We investigate the independent domination polynomials of some generalized compound graphs. As consequences, we construct graphs whose independence domination roots are real. Also, we consider some certain graphs and study the number of their inde…
Let G be a graph. The independence-domination number is the maximum over all independent sets I in G of the minimal number of vertices needed to dominate I. In this paper we investigate the computational complexity of independence domination for graphs in several graph classes related to cographs. We present an exact exponential algorithm. We also present a PTAS for planar graphs.
For a sequence $d$ of non-negative integers, let ${\cal G}(d)$ and ${\cal F}(d)$ be the sets of all graphs and forests with degree sequence $d$, respectively. Let $γ_{\min}(d)=\min\{ γ(G):G\in {\cal G}(d)\}$, $α_{\max}(d)=\max\{ α(G):G\in {\cal G}(d)\}$, $γ_{\min}^{\cal F}(d)=\min\{ γ(F):F\in {\cal F}(d)\}$, and $α_{\max}^{\cal F}(d)=\max\{ α(F):F\in {\cal F}(d)\}$ where $γ(G)$ is the domination number and $α(G)$ is the independence number of a graph $G$. Adapting results of Havel and Hakimi, Rao showed in 1979 that $α_{\max}(d)$ can be determined in polynomial time. We establish the existence…
We study relations between diameter $D(G)$, domination number $γ(G)$, independence number $α(G)$ and cop number $c(G)$ of a connected graph $G$, showing (i.) $c(G) \leq α(G)-\lfloor \frac{D(G)-3}{2} \rfloor$, and (ii.) $c(G) \leq γ(G) - \frac{D(G)}{3} + O (\sqrt{D(G)})$.
In this paper, we investigate the relation between the (fractional) domination number of a digraph $G$ and the independence number of its underlying graph, denoted by $α(G)$. More precisely, we prove that every digraph $G$ has fractional domination number at most $2α(G)$, and every directed triangle-free digraph $G$ has domination number at most $α(G)\cdot α(G)!$. The first bound is sharp.
If $A$ is an independent set of a graph $G$ such that the vertices in $A$ have different degrees, then we call $A$ an irregular independent set of $G$. If $D$ is a dominating set of $G$ such that the vertices that are not in $D$ have different numbers of neighbours in $D$, then we call $D$ an irregular dominating set of $G$. The size of a largest irregular independent set of $G$ and the size of a smallest irregular dominating set of $G$ are denoted by $α_{ir}(G)$ and $γ_{ir}(G)$, respectively. We initiate the investigation of these two graph parameters. For each of them, we obtain sharp bounds…
We identify the mean growth of the independence number of random binary search trees and random recursive trees and show normal fluctuations around their means. Similarly we also show normal limit laws for the domination number and variations of it for these two cases of random tree models. Our results are an application of a recent general theorem of Holmgren and Janson on fringe trees in these two random tree models.
We construct several pairwise-incomparable bounds on the projective dimensions of edge ideals. Our bounds use combinatorial properties of the associated graphs; in particular we draw heavily from the topic of dominating sets. Through Hochster's Formula, these bounds recover and strengthen existing results on the homological connectivity of graph independence complexes.
Eternal and m-eternal domination are concerned with using mobile guards to protect a graph against infinite sequences of attacks at vertices. Eternal domination allows one guard to move per attack, whereas more than one guard may move per attack in the m-eternal domination model. Inequality chains consisting of the domination, eternal domination, m-eternal domination, independence, and clique covering numbers of graph are explored in this paper. Among other results, we characterize bipartite and triangle-free graphs with domination and eternal domination numbers equal to two, trees with equal …
For $r\geq 1$, the $r$-independence complex of a graph $G$, denoted Ind$_r(G)$, is a simplicial complex whose faces are subsets $A \subseteq V(G)$ such that each component of the induced subgraph $G[A]$ has at most $r$ vertices. In this article, we establish a relation between the distance $r$-domination number of $G$ and (homological) connectivity of Ind$_r(G)$. We also prove that Ind$_r(G)$, for a chordal graph $G$, is either contractible or homotopy equivalent to a wedge of spheres. Given a wedge of spheres, we also provide a construction of a chordal graph whose $r$-independence complex ha…
A broadcast on a nontrivial connected graph G with vertex set V is a function f from V to {0,1,...,diam(G)} such that f(v) is at most the eccentricity of v for all v in V. The weight of f is the sum of the function values taken over V. A vertex u hears f from v if f(v) is positive and d(u,v) is at most f(v). A broadcast f is dominating if every vertex of G hears f. The upper broadcast number of G is Γ_{b}(G), which is the maximum weight of a minimal dominating broadcast on G. A broadcast f is boundary independent if, for any vertex w that hears f from vertices v_{1},...,v_{k}, where k is at le…
We show that there are polynomial-time algorithms to compute maximum independent sets in the categorical products of two cographs and two splitgraphs. The ultimate categorical independence ratio of a graph G is defined as lim_{k --> infty} α(G^k)/n^k. The ultimate categorical independence ratio is polynomial for cographs, permutation graphs, interval graphs, graphs of bounded treewidth and splitgraphs. When G is a planar graph of maximal degree three then alpha(G \times K_4) is NP-complete. We present a PTAS for the ultimate categorical independence ratio of planar graphs. We present an O^*(n^…

A directed dominating set in a directed graph $D$ is a set $S$ of vertices of $V$ such that every vertex $u \in V(D) \setminus S$ has an adjacent vertex $v$ in $S$ with $v$ directed to $u$. The directed domination number of $D$, denoted by $γ(D)$, is the minimum cardinality of a directed dominating set in $D$. The directed domination number of a graph $G$, denoted $Γ_d(G)$, which is the maximum directed domination number $γ(D)$ over all orientations $D$ of $G$. In this paper, we show that several graph parameters are known in different areas under completely different names. More specifically, our observations connect signed domination, monopolies, $α$-domination, $α$-independence, positive influence domination, and a parameter associated to fast information propagation in networks to parameters related to various notions of global $r$-alliances in graphs. We also propose a new framework, called (global) $(D,O)$-alliances, not only in order to characterize various known variants of alliance and domination parameters, but also to suggest a unifying fr…
Fricke, Hedetniemi, Hedetniemi, and Hutson asked whether every tree with domination number $γ$ has at most $2^γ$ minimum dominating sets. Bien gave a counterexample, which allows to construct forests with domination number $γ$ and $2.0598^γ$ minimum dominating sets. We show that every forest with domination number $γ$ has at most $2.4606^γ$ minimum dominating sets, and that every tree with independence number $α$ has at most $2^{α-1}+1$ maximum independent sets.
For a set $S$ of vertices of a graph $G$, a vertex $u$ in $V(G)\setminus S$, and a vertex $v$ in $S$, let ${\rm dist}_{(G,S)}(u,v)$ be the distance of $u$ and $v$ in the graph $G-(S\setminus \{ v\})$. Dankelmann et al. (Domination with exponential decay, Discrete Math. 309 (2009) 5877-5883) define $S$ to be an exponential dominating set of $G$ if $w_{(G,S)}(u)\geq 1$ for every vertex $u$ in $V(G)\setminus S$, where $w_{(G,S)}(u)=\sum\limits_{v\in S}\left(\frac{1}{2}\right)^{{\rm dist}_{(G,S)}(u,v)-1}$. Inspired by this notion, we define $S$ to be an exponential independent set of $G$ if $w_{(G…
The unitary Cayley graph of $\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$, denoted $X_n$, is the graph on $\{0,\dots,n-1\}$ where vertices $a$ and $b$ are adjacent if and only if $\gcd(a-b,n) = 1$. We answer a question of Defant and Iyer by constructing a family of infinitely many integers $n$ such that $γ_t(X_n) \leq g(n) - 2$, where $γ_t$ denotes the total domination number and $g$ denotes the Jacobsthal function. We determine the irredundance number, domination number, and lower independence number of certain direct products of complete graphs and give bounds for these parameters for any direct product of compl…
Let G = (V;E) be a simple graph. We consider domination polynomial, matching polynomial and edge cover polynomial of G. Graphs which their polynomials have few roots can give sometimes a very surprising information about the structure of the graph. In this paper we study graphs which their domination polynomial, independence polynomial and edge cover polynomial have few roots.
For a given graph $G$ without isolated vertex we consider a function $f: V(G) \rightarrow \{0,1,2\}$. For every $i\in \{0,1,2\}$, let $V_i=\{v\in V(G):\; f(v)=i\}$. The function $f$ is known to be an outer-independent total Roman dominating function for the graph $G$ if it is satisfied that; (i) every vertex in $V_0$ is adjacent to at least one vertex in $V_2$; (ii) $V_0$ is an independent set; and (iii) the subgraph induced by $V_1\cup V_2$ has no isolated vertex. The minimum possible weight $ω(f)=\sum_{v\in V(G)}f(v)$ among all outer-independent total Roman dominating functions for $G$ is ca…
We study the independence complex of the lexicographic product $G[H]$ of a forest $G$ and a graph $H$. We prove that for a forest $G$ which is not dominated by a single vertex, if the independence complex of $H$ is homotopy equivalent to a wedge sum of spheres, then so is the independence complex of $G[H]$. We offer two examples of explicit calculations. As the first example, we determine the homotopy type of the independence complex of $L_m [H]$, where $L_m$ is the tree on $m$ vertices with no branches, for any positive integer $m$ when the independence complex of $H$ is homotopy equivalent t…
A vertex coloring of a graph $G$ is an assignment of colors to the vertices of $G$ such that every two adjacent vertices of $G$ have different colors. A coloring related property of a graphs is also an assignment of colors or labels to the vertices of a graph, in which the process of labeling is done according to an extra condition. A set $S$ of vertices of a graph $G$ is a dominating set in $G$ if every vertex outside of $S$ is adjacent to at least one vertex belonging to $S$. A domination parameter of $G$ is related to those structures of a graph satisfying some domination property together …
Let $G$ be a connected graph of order $n$ with vertex set $V(G)$. A subset $S\subseteq V(G)$ is an $(a,b)$-dominating set if every vertex $v\in S$ is adjacent to at least $a$ vertices in $S$ and every $v\in V\setminus S$ is adjacent to at least $b$ vertices in $S$. The minimum cardinality of an $(a,b)$-dominating set of $G$ is the $(a,b)$-domination number of $G$, denoted by $γ_{a,b}(G)$. There are various results about upper bounds for $γ_{a,b}(G)$ when $G$ is regular or $a$ and $b$ are small numbers. In the first part of this paper, for a given graph $G$ with the minimum degree of $\max\{a,b…
We consider a generic algorithmic paradigm that we call progressive exploration, which can be used to develop simple and efficient parameterized graph algorithms. We identify two model-theoretic properties that lead to efficient progressive algorithms, namely variants of the Helly property and stability. We demonstrate our approach by giving linear-time fixed-parameter algorithms for the distance-r dominating set problem (parameterized by the solution size) in a wide variety of restricted graph classes, such as powers of nowhere dense classes, map graphs, and (for $r=1$) biclique-free graphs. …
In 1991, it was shown by Favaron, Mahéo, and Saclé that the residue, which is defined as the number of zeros remaining when the Havel-Hakimi algorithm is applied to a degree sequence, yields a lower bound on the independence number of any graph realising the sequence. In 1996, Triesch simplified and generalised the result by introducing elimination sequences. It was proved in 1973 by Kleitman and Wang that for any graphic sequence all elimination algorithms, i.e. laying-off vertices in any order, preserve that the sequence is graphic and terminate in a sequence of zeros. We now prove that for …
The dual concepts of coverings and packings are well studied in graph theory. Coverings of graphs with balls of radius one and packings of vertices with pairwise distances at least two are the well-known concepts of domination and independence, respectively. In 2001, Erwin introduced \emph{broadcast domination} in graphs, a covering problem using balls of various radii, where the cost of a ball is its radius. The minimum cost of a dominating broadcast in a graph $G$ is denoted by $γ_b(G)$. The dual (in the sense of linear programming) of broadcast domination is \emph{multipacking}: a multipack…
The linear complementarity problem is a continuous optimization problem that generalizes convex quadratic programming, Nash equilibria of bimatrix games and several such problems. This paper presents a continuous optimization formulation for the weighted independence number of a graph by characterizing it as the maximum weighted $\ell_1$ norm over the solution set of a linear complementarity problem (LCP). The minimum $\ell_1$ norm of solutions of this LCP is a lower bound on the independent domination number of the graph. Unlike the case of the maximum $\ell_1$ norm, this lower bound is in ge…
We introduce a procedure, called the Degree Sequence Index Strategy (DSI), by which to bound graph invariants by certain indices in the ordered degree sequence. As an illustration of the DSI strategy, we show how it can be used to give new upper and lower bounds on the $k$-independence and the $k$-domination numbers. These include, among other things, a double generalization of the annihilation number, a recently introduced upper bound on the independence number. Next, we use the DSI strategy in conjunction with planarity, to generalize some results of Caro and Roddity about independence numbe…
Fractional graph isomorphism is the linear relaxation of an integer programming formulation of graph isomorphism. It preserves some invariants of graphs, like degree sequences and equitable partitions, but it does not preserve others like connectivity, clique and independence numbers, chromatic number, vertex and edge cover numbers, matching number, domination and total domination numbers. In this work, we extend the concept of fractional graph isomorphism to hypergraphs, and give an alternative characterization, analogous to one of those that are known for graphs. With this new concept we pro…
In any graph $G$, the domination number $γ(G)$ is at most the independence number $α(G)$. The Inverse Domination Conjecture says that, in any isolate-free $G$, there exists pair of vertex-disjoint dominating sets $D, D'$ with $|D|=γ(G)$ and $|D'| \leq α(G)$. Here we prove that this statement is true if the upper bound $α(G)$ is replaced by $\frac{3}{2}α(G) - 1$ (and $G$ is not a clique). We also prove that the conjecture holds whenever $γ(G)\leq 5$ or $|V(G)|\leq 16$.
The bipartition polynomial of a graph is a generalization of many other graph polynomials, including the domination, Ising, matching, independence, cut, and Euler polynomial. We show in this paper that it is also a powerful tool for proving graph properties. In addition, we can show that the bipartition polynomial is polynomially reconstructible, which means that we can recover it from the multiset of bipartition polynomials of one-edge-deleted subgraphs.
For a vector space $V$ the \emph{intersection graph of subspaces} of $V$, denoted by $G(V)$, is the graph whose vertices are in a one-to-one correspondence with proper nontrivial subspaces of $V$ and two distinct vertices are adjacent if and only if the corresponding subspaces of $V$ have a nontrivial (nonzero) intersection. In this paper, we study the clique number, the chromatic number, the domination number and the independence number of the intersection graphs of subspaces of a vector space.
A broadcast on a nontrivial connected graph G is a function f from the vertices of G to the non-negative integers such that f(v) does not exceed e(v) (the eccentricity of v) for each vertex v. If G is disconnected, we define a broadcast on G as the union of broadcasts on its components. In a search for the best way to generalise the concept of independent sets in graphs to independent broadcasts, there are several ways to look at an independent set X of a graph G. One way is from the point of view of the vertices in X: no two vertices are adjacent -- the usual definition. Another way is from t…
Let $G$ be a simple graph with $m$ edges and $H_i$, $1\leq i \leq m$ be simple graphs too. The generalized edge corona product of graphs $G$ and $H_1, ..., H_m$, denoted by $G \diamond (H_1, ..., H_m)$, is obtained by taking one copy of graphs $G$, $H_1, ..., H_m$ and joining two end vertices of $i$-th edge of $G$ to every vertex of $H_i$, $1\leq i \leq m$. In this paper, some results regarding the $k$-distance chromatic number of Generalized edge corona product of graphs are presented. Also, as a consequence of our results, we compute this invariant for the graphs $K_n \diamond (H_1, ..., H_m…
