In this article, we introduce a framework for quantum state tomography of qutrits by projective measurements. The framework is based on photon-counting with measurement results distorted due to the Poisson noise and dark counts. Two different measurement schemes are investigated numerically and compared in terms of their efficiency for distinct numbers of photons per measurement. The accuracy of state reconstruction is quantified by figures of merit which are presented on graphs versus the amount of noise.
In this article we propose a dynamic quantum state tomography model for qutrits subject to laser cooling. We prove that one can reduce the number of distinct measurement setups required for state reconstruction by employing the stroboscopic approach. The results are in line with current advances in quantum tomography where there is a strong tendency to investigate the optimal criteria for state reconstruction. We believe that the stroboscopic approach can be considered an efficient tool for density matrix identification since it allows to determine the minimal number of distinct observables ne…
An experimental demonstration of two-qutrit state tomography via one-qutrit symmetric informationally complete positive operator-valued measure (SIC-POVM) is presented. A two-qutrit state is encoded in the transversal paths of a spontaneous parametric down-converted photon pair. A spatial light modulator allows to implement the necessary 81 POVM elements to reconstruct the state. The quality of the reconstruction is evaluated by comparing independent measurements with the predicted results calculated with the reconstructed state. Entanglement in the system is calculated via negativity and gene…
This is a Bachelor's thesis on point estimators for incomplete tomography of qutrits as of 2014, submitted to the National University of Singapore. The main content of the thesis focuses on various methods of estimation such as maximum entropy and average estimator and show that they are quite different. Numerical simulations of these methods show however that these estimators perform very close to one another. Therefore on this basis, there is no reason to favor one method over another.
Using the irreducible tensor-operator technique, we establish the relation between different forms of spin tomograms. Quantizer and dequantizer operators are presented in simple explicit forms and are specified for the low-spin states. The kernel of the star-product is evaluated for qubits and qutrits and its connection with a generic formula is found.
The article introduces efficient quantum state tomography schemes for qutrits and entangled qubits subject to pure decoherence. We implement the dynamic state reconstruction method for open systems sent through phase-damping channels which was proposed in: Open Syst. Inf. Dyn. 23, 1650019 (2016). In the current article we prove that two distinct observables measured at four different time instants suffice to reconstruct the initial density matrix of a qutrit with evolution given by a phase-damping channel. Furthermore, we generalize the approach in order to determine the optimal criteria for q…
We have implemented a Walsh-Hadamard gate, which performs a quantum Fourier transform, in a superconducting qutrit. The qutrit is encoded in the lowest three energy levels of a capacitively shunted flux device, operated at the optimal flux-symmetry point. We use an efficient decomposition of the Walsh-Hadamard gate into two unitaries, generated by off-diagonal and diagonal Hamiltonians respectively. The gate implementation utilizes simultaneous driving of all three transitions between the three pairs of energy levels of the qutrit, one of which is implemented with a two-photon process. The gat…
Spatial qudit states can be realized by using multi-slits to discretize the transverse momentum of a photon. The merit of this kind of spatial qudit states is that the implementation of higher dimensional qudits is relatively easy. As we have recently shown, the quantum states of these spatial qudits can be analyzed by scanning a single interference pattern. This method of single scan tomography can also be applied at higher dimensions, but the reconstruction becomes more sensitive to smaller details of the scanned patterns as the dimensions increase. In this paper, we investigate the effect o…
Three-dimensional entanglement of orbital angular momentum states of an atomic qutrit and a single photon qutrit has been observed. Their full state was reconstructed using quantum state tomography. The fidelity to the maximally entangled state of Schmidt rank 3 exceeds the threshold 2/3. This result confirms that the density matrix cannot be decomposed into ensemble of pure states of Schmidt rank 1 or 2. That is, the Schmidt number of the density matrix must be equal to or greater than 3.
The article establishes a framework for dynamic generation of informationally complete POVMs in quantum state tomography. Assuming that the evolution of a quantum system is given by a dynamical map in the Kraus representation, one can switch to the Heisenberg picture and define the measurements in the time domain. Consequently, starting with an incomplete set of positive operators, one can obtain sufficient information for quantum state reconstruction by multiple measurements. The framework has been demonstrated on qubits and qutrits. For some types of dynamical maps, it suffices to initially …
We report a study of the Majorana geometrical representation of a qutrit, where a pair of points on a unit sphere represents its quantum states. A canonical form for qutrit states is presented, where every state can be obtained from a one-parameter family of states via $SO(3)$ action. The notion of spin-1 magnetization which is invariant under $SO(3)$ is geometrically interpreted on the Majorana sphere. Furthermore, we describe the action of several quantum gates in the Majorana picture and experimentally implement these gates on a spin-1 system (an NMR qutrit) oriented in a liquid crystalline…
The novel experimental realization of three-level optical quantum systems is presented. We use the polarization state of biphotons to generate a specific sequence of states that are used in the extended version of BB84 protocol. We experimentally verify the orthogonality of the basis states and demonstrate the ability to easily switch between them. The tomography procedure is employed to reconstruct the density matrices of generated states.
We produce and holographically measure entangled qudits encoded in transverse spatial modes of single photons. With the novel use of a quantum state tomography method that only requires two-state superpositions, we achieve the most complete characterisation of entangled qutrits to date. Ideally, entangled qutrits provide better security than qubits in quantum bit-commitment: we model the sensitivity of this to mixture and show experimentally and theoretically that qutrits with even a small amount of decoherence cannot offer increased security over qubits.
The novel experimental realization of three-state optical quantum systems is presented. We use the polarization state of biphotons, propagating in single frequency- and spatial mode, to generate an arbitrary qutrits. In particular the specific sequence of states that are used in the extended version of BB84 quantum key distribution protocol was generated and tested. We experimentally verify the orthogonality of the 12 basic states and demonstrate the ability of switching between them. The tomography procedure is applied to reconstruct the density matrices of generated states.
In the current work we address the problem of quantum process tomography (QPT) in the case of imperfect preparation and measurement of the states which are used for QPT. The fuzzy measurements approach which helps us to efficiently take these imperfections into account is considered. However, to implement such a procedure one should have a detailed information about the errors. An approach for obtaining the partial information about them is proposed. It is based on the tomography of the ideal identity gate. This gate could be implemented by performing the measurement right after the initial st…
It is well known that one can extract all the information of an unknown quantum channel by means of quantum process tomography, such as standard quantum-process tomography and ancilla-assisted quantum process tomography (AAQPT). Furthermore, it has been shown that entanglement is not necessary for AAQPT, there exist separable states which are also useful for it. Surprisingly, in this work we find that not all entangled states are useful for AAQPT, there also exist some entangled states which are useless. The realignment operation used in entanglement detection can be related to the question wh…
We investigate the practicality of the method proposed by Maciel et al. [Phys. Rev. A. 80, 032325(2009)] for detecting the entanglement of two spatial qutrits (3-dimensional quantum systems), which are encoded in the discrete transverse momentum of single photons transmitted through a multi-slit aperture. The method is based on the acquisition of partial information of the quantum state through projective measurements, and a data processing analysis done with semi-definite programs. This analysis relies on generating gradually an optimal entanglement witness operator, and numerical investigati…
In this article, we investigate the efficiency of photonic state tomography in the presence of fiber attenuation. The theoretical formalism of the photon loss is provided by implementing methods from the theory of open quantum systems. The quantum state is reconstructed from photon counts obtained for symmetric informationally complete POVMs. The number of photons that reach the detectors is numerically modeled by the binomial distribution, which describes the loss of light caused by the medium. This approach allows us to study the quality of state tomography versus the length of the fiber. In…
Nonadiabatic holonomic quantum computation has received increasing attention due to its robustness against control errors as well as high-speed realization. The original protocol of nonadiabatic holonomic one-qubit gates has been experimentally demonstrated with superconducting transmon qutrit. However, the original protocol requires two noncommuting gates to realize an arbitrary one-qubit gate, which doubles the exposure time of gates to error sources and therefore makes the gates vulnerable to environment-induced decoherence. Single-shot protocol was subsequently proposed to realize an arbit…
Reliable and well-characterized quantum resources are indispensable ingredients in quantum information processing. Typically, in a realistic characterization of these resources, apparatuses come with intrinsic uncertainties that can manifest themselves in the form of systematic errors. While systematic errors are generally accounted for through careful calibration, the effect of remaining imperfections on the characterization of quantum resources has been largely overlooked in the literature. In this paper, we investigate the effect of systematic errors that arise from imperfect alignment of m…

We use quantum detector tomography to characterize the qubit readout in terms of measurement POVMs on IBM Quantum Computers IBM Q 5 Tenerife and IBM Q 5 Yorktown. Our results suggest that the characterized detector model deviates from the ideal projectors by a few percent. Further improvement on this characterization can be made by adopting two- or more-qubit detector models instead of independent single-qubit detectors for all the qubits in one device. An unexpected behavior was seen in the physical qubit labelled as qubit 3 of IBM Q 5 Tenerife, which can be a consequence of detector crosstal…
Reconstruction of a quantum state is of prime importance for quantum-information science. Specifically, means of efficient determination of a state of atoms of room-temperature vapor may enable applications in quantum computations and cryptography. To step toward such applications, here we present a method of reconstruction of a collective density matrix of an atomic ensemble, consisting of atoms with an $F=1$ ground state. Such a long-lived state is often encountered in real systems (e.g., potassium, sodium, rubidium) and hence may be practically utilized. Our theoretical treatment enables de…
The theory of quantum information provides a common language which links disciplines ranging from cosmology to condensed-matter physics. For example, the delocalization of quantum information in strongly-interacting many-body systems, known as quantum information scrambling, has recently begun to unite our understanding of black hole dynamics, transport in exotic non-Fermi liquids, and many-body analogs of quantum chaos. To date, verified experimental implementations of scrambling have dealt only with systems comprised of two-level qubits. Higher-dimensional quantum systems, however, may exhib…
Tomography of a quantum state is usually based on positive operator-valued measure (POVM) and on their experimental statistics. Among the available reconstructions, the maximum-likelihood (MaxLike) technique is an efficient one. We propose an extension of this technique when the measurement process cannot be simply described by an instantaneous POVM. Instead, the tomography relies on a set of quantum trajectories and their measurement records. This model includes the fact that, in practice, each measurement could be corrupted by imperfections and decoherence, and could also be associated with …
It is crucial for various quantum information processing tasks that the state of a quantum system can be determined reliably and efficiently from general quantum measurements. One important class of measurements for this purpose is symmetric informationally complete positive operator-valued measurements (SIC-POVMs). SIC-POVMs have the advantage of providing an unbiased estimator for the quantum state with the minimal number of outcomes needed for full tomography. By virtue of Naimark's dilation theorem, any POVM can always be realized with a suitable coupling between the system and an auxiliar…
We present a method for measuring quantum states encoded in the temporal modes of photons. The basis for the multilevel quantum states is defined by the use of modes propagating in a dispersive medium, which is a fiber in this case. The propagation and time-resolved single photon detection allow us to define a positive-operator valued measure (POVM). The POVM depends on the amount of dispersion and the characteristics of a detector. This framework is numerically tested by performing quantum state tomography on a large number of states for a set of realistic experimental settings. Finally, the …
Long-time dynamical decoupling and quantum control of qubits require high-precision control pulses. Full characterization (quantum tomography) of imperfect pulses presents a bootstrap problem: tomography requires initial states of a qubit which can not be prepared without imperfect pulses. We present a protocol for pulse error analysis, specifically tailored for a wide range of the single solid-state electron spins. Using a single electron spin of a nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond, we experimentally verify the correctness of the protocol, and demonstrate its usefulness for quantum cont…
We discuss characterization of experimental quantum gates by the error matrix, which is similar to the standard process matrix $χ$ in the Pauli basis, except the desired unitary operation is factored out, by formally placing it either before or after the error process. The error matrix has only one large element, which is equal to the process fidelity, while other elements are small and indicate imperfections. The imaginary parts of the elements along the left column and/or top row directly indicate the unitary imperfection and can be used to find the needed correction. We discuss a relatively…

The article undertakes the problem of pure state estimation from projective measurements based on photon counting. Two generic frames for qubit tomography are considered -- one composed of the elements of the SIC-POVM and the other defined by the vectors from the mutually unbiased bases (MUBs). Both frames are combined with the method of least squares in order to reconstruct a sample of input qubits with imperfect measurements. The accuracy of each frame is quantified by the average fidelity and purity. The efficiency of the frames is compared and discussed. The method can be generalized to hi…
Recently quantum tomography has been proposed as a fundamental tool for prototyping a few qubit quantum device. It allows the complete reconstruction of the state produced from a given input into the device. From this reconstructed density matrix, relevant quantum information quantities such as the degree of entanglement and entropy can be calculated. Generally orthogonal measurements have been discussed for this tomographic reconstruction. In this paper, we extend the tomographic reconstruction technique to two new regimes. First we show how non-orthogonal measurement allow the reconstruction…
We experimentally study the violation of the CGLMP inequality for entangled 2-qubit and 2-qutrit states with different degrees of entanglement using numerically optimized measurement settings. The qudits are encoded and manipulated in the frequency spectrum of broadband energy-time entangled photons by taking into account a spatial light modulator. The latter allows to discretize the spectrum into bins. By controlling each frequency bin individually, the generation of maximally and non-maximally entangled qutrits is verified through quantum state tomography.
The exponential growth in Hilbert space with increasing size of a quantum system means that accurately characterising the system becomes significantly harder with system dimension d. We show that self-guided tomography is a practical, efficient, and robust technique of measuring higher-dimensional quantum states. The achieved fidelities are over 99.9% for qutrits (d=3) and ququints (d=5), and 99.1% for quvigints (d=20), the highest values ever realised for qudits. We demonstrate robustness against experimental sources of noise, both statistical and environmental. The technique is applicable to…

State of a $d$-dimensional quantum system can only be inferred by performing an informationally complete measurement with $m\geqslant d^2$ outcomes. However, an experimentally accessible measurement can be informationally incomplete. Here we show that a single informationally incomplete measuring apparatus is still able to provide all the information about the quantum system if applied several times in a row. We derive a necessary and sufficient condition for such a measuring apparatus and give illustrative examples for qubits, qutrits, general $d$-level systems, and composite systems of $n$ q…
We propose an iterative algorithm that computes the maximum-likelihood estimate in quantum state tomography. The optimization error of the algorithm converges to zero at an $O ( ( 1 / k ) \log D )$ rate, where $k$ denotes the number of iterations and $D$ denotes the dimension of the quantum state. The per-iteration computational complexity of the algorithm is $O ( D ^ 3 + N D ^2 )$, where $N$ denotes the number of measurement outcomes. The algorithm can be considered as a parameter-free correction of the $R ρR$ method [A. I. Lvovsky. Iterative maximum-likelihood reconstruction in quantum homod…
Quantum computation is conventionally performed using quantum operations acting on two-level quantum bits, or qubits. Qubits in modern quantum computers suffer from inevitable detrimental interactions with the environment that cause errors during computation, with multi-qubit operations often being a primary limitation. Most quantum devices naturally have multiple accessible energy levels beyond the lowest two traditionally used to define a qubit. Qudits offer a larger state space to store and process quantum information, reducing complexity of quantum circuits and improving efficiency of quan…
We investigate whether paradigmatic measurements for quantum state tomography, namely mutually unbiased bases and symmetric informationally complete measurements, can be employed to certify quantum correlations. For this purpose, we identify a simple and noise-robust correlation witness for entanglement detection, steering and nonlocality that can be evaluated based on the outcome statistics obtained in the tomography experiment. This allows us to perform state tomography on entangled qutrits, a test of Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen steering and a Bell inequality test, all within a single experiment…
Dynamical decoupling is a technique that protects qubits against noise. The ability to preserve quantum coherence in the presence of noise is essential for the development of quantum devices. Here the Rigetti quantum computing platform was used to test different dynamical decoupling sequences. The performance of the sequences was characterized by Quantum Process Tomography and analyzed using the quantum channels formalism. It is shown that dynamical decoupling can reduce qubit dephasing but cannot protect against spontaneous emission. Furthermore, from process tomography results, it was also p…
Classical realism demands that system properties exist independently of whether they are measured, while noncontextuality demands that the results of measurements do not depend on what other measurements are performed in conjunction with them. The Bell-Kochen-Specker theorem states that noncontextual realism cannot reproduce the measurement statistics of a single three-level quantum system (qutrit). Noncontextual realistic models may thus be tested using a single qutrit without relying on the notion of quantum entanglement in contrast to Bell inequality tests. It is challenging to refute such …
We review single-qubit quantum process tomography for trace-preserving and nontrace-preserving processes, and derive explicit forms of the general constraints for fitting experimental data. These forms provide additional insight into the structure of the process matrix as well as reveal a tighter bound on the trace of a nontrace-preserving process than has been previously stated. We also describe, for completeness, how to incorporate measured imperfect input states.

We present a framework that formulates the quest for the most efficient quantum state tomography scheme as an optimization problem which can be solved numerically. This approach can be applied to a broad spectrum of relevant setups including measurements restricted to a subsystem. To illustrate the power of this method we present results for the six-dimensional Hilbert space constituted by a qubit-qutrit system, which could be realized e.g. by the N-14 nuclear spin-1 and two electronic spin states of a nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond. Measurements of the qubit subsystem are expressed by pro…
We present an efficient and robust method for the reconstruction of photon number distributions by using solely thermal noise as a probe. The method uses a minimal number of pre-calibrated quantum devices, only one on/off single-photon detector is sufficient. Feasibility of the method is demonstrated by the experimental inference of single-photon, thermal and two-photon states. The method is stable to experimental imperfections and provides a direct, user-friendly quantum diagnostics tool.
For an initially well designed but imperfect quantum information system, the process matrix is almost sparse in an appropriate basis. Existing theory and associated computational methods (L1-norm minimization) for reconstructing sparse signals establish conditions under which the sparse signal can be perfectly reconstructed from a very limited number of measurements (resources). Although a direct extension to quantum process tomography of the L1-norm minimization theory has not yet emerged, the numerical examples presented here, which apply L1-norm minimization to quantum process tomography, s…
Quantum state tomography, which aims to find the best description of a quantum state -- the density matrix, is an essential building block in quantum computation and communication. Standard techniques for state tomography are incapable of tracking changing states and often perform poorly in the presence of environmental noise. Although there are different approaches to solve these problems theoretically, experimental demonstrations have so far been sparse. Our approach, matrix-exponentiated gradient tomography, is an online tomography method that allows for state tracking, updates the estimate…
The ability of fully reconstructing quantum maps is a fundamental task of quantum information, in particular when coupling with the environment and experimental imperfections of devices are taken into account. In this context we carry out a quantum process tomography (QPT) approach for a set of non trace-preserving maps. We introduce an operator $\OO$ to characterize the state dependent probability of success for the process under investigation. We also evaluate the result of approximating the process with a trace-preserving one.
Finding the least measurement settings to determine an arbitrary pure state has been long known as the Pauli problem. In the fixed measurement scheme four orthonormal bases are required even though there are far less parameters in a pure state. Peres conjectured that two unbiased bases suffice to determine a pure state up to some finite ambiguities. Here we shall at first prove Peres conjecture in the case of $d=3,4$, namely, two unbiased measurements determine a pure state up to to 6 and 16 candidates for a qutrit and ququad, respectively. And then, taking Peres' conjecture for established, w…
Motivated by the increasing ability of experimentalists to perform detector tomography, we consider how to incorporate the imperfections and restrictions of available measurements directly into the quantification of entanglement. Exploiting the idea that the recently introduced semiquantum nonlocal games as the gauge of the amount of entanglement in a state, we define an effective entanglement functional giving us effective entanglement when the measurement operators one has at their disposal are restricted by either fundamental considerations, such as superselection rules, or practical inabil…
