We present a method for measuring quantum states encoded in the temporal modes of photons. The basis for the multilevel quantum states is defined by the use of modes propagating in a dispersive medium, which is a fiber in this case. The propagation and time-resolved single photon detection allow us to define a positive-operator valued measure (POVM). The POVM depends on the amount of dispersion and the characteristics of a detector. This framework is numerically tested by performing quantum state tomography on a large number of states for a set of realistic experimental settings. Finally, the average fidelity between the expected and reconstructed states is computed for qubits, qutrits and entangled qubits.
We study broadband polarization entangled states generated within the line width of type-II Spontaneous Parametric Down Conversion (SPDC). Applying a complete quantum polarization tomography protocol at arbitrary combination of frequency and angular sideband modes we reveal a complex structure of non-degenerate non-collinear polarization entangled states generated within the SPDC line width. It is demonstrated that simultaneous compensation of longitudinal and transverse walk off leads to homogenizing the structure of polarization entanglement.
A typical goal of a quantum simulation is to find the energy levels and eigenstates of a given Hamiltonian. This can be realized by adiabatically varying the system control parameters to steer an initial eigenstate into the eigenstate of the target Hamiltonian. Such an adiabatic quantum simulation is demonstrated by directly implementing a controllable and smoothly varying Hamiltonian in the rotating frame of two superconducting qubits, including longitudinal and transverse fields and iSWAP-type two-qubit interactions. The evolution of each eigenstate is tracked using time-resolved state tomog…
The coexistence of quantum and classical signals over the same optical fiber with minimal degradation of the transmitted quantum information is critical for operating large-scale quantum networks over the existing communications infrastructure. Here, we systematically characterize the quantum channel that results from simultaneously distributing approximate single-photon polarization-encoded qubits and classical light of varying intensities through fiber-optic channels of up to 15~km. Using spectrally resolved quantum process tomography with a Bayesian reconstruction method we developed, we es…
In this article, we introduce a framework for entanglement characterization by time-resolved single-photon counting with measurement operators defined in the time domain. For a quantum system with unitary dynamics, we generate time-continuous measurements by shifting from the Schrodinger picture to the Heisenberg representation. In particular, we discuss this approach in reference to photonic tomography. To make the measurement scheme realistic, we impose timing uncertainty on photon counts along with the Poisson noise. Then, the framework is tested numerically on quantum tomography of qubits.…
Quantum state tomography (QST) is an essential tool for characterizing an unknown quantum state. Recently, QST has been performed for entangled qudits based on orbital angular momentum, time-energy uncertainty, and frequency bins. Here, we propose a QST for time-bin qudits, with which the number of measurement settings scales linearly with dimension $d$. Using the proposed scheme, we performed QST for a four-dimensional time-bin maximally entangled state with 16 measurement settings. We successfully reconstructed the density matrix of the entangled qudits, with which the average fidelity of th…
Using tomographic reconstruction we determine the complete internuclear quantum state, represented by the Wigner function, of a dissociating I2 molecule based on femtosecond time resolved position and momentum distributions of the atomic fragments. The experimental data are recorded by timed ionization of the photofragments with an intense 20 fs laser pulse. Our reconstruction method, which relies on Jaynes' maximum entropy principle, will also be applicable to time resolved position or momentum data obtained with other experimental techniques.
We propose a quantum process tomography scheme that utilizes two-mode squeezed vacuum to realize the parameter estimation with Heisenberg scaling. The objective is to estimate a rotating angle of polarization and parity detection is used as the detection strategy. With the help of symplectic matrix theory, we discuss the estimation visibility and sensitivity of output signal in lossless situation, the quantum Fisher information is also given via calculation. Finally, the impacts of two realistic factors on both visibility and sensitivity are also considered, including photon loss during the in…
We experimentally study the phase space distribution (PSD) of a mechanical resonator that is simultaneously coupled to two electromagnetic cavities. The first one, operating in the microwave band, is employed for inducing either cooling or self-excited oscillation, whereas the second one, operating in the optical band, is used for displacement detection. A tomography technique is employed for extracting the PSD from the signal reflected by the optical cavity. Measurements of PSD are performed in steady state near the threshold of self-excited oscillation while sweeping the microwave cavity det…
We present a comprehensive framework for quantum state tomography (QST) of time-bin qudits sent through a fiber. Starting from basic assumptions, we define a positive-operator valued measure (POVM) which is then applied to the quantum state reconstruction problem. A realistic scenario is considered where the time uncertainty of the detector is treated as a source of experimental noise. The performance of the quantum tomography framework is examined through a series of numerical simulations conducted for different parameters describing the apparatus. The quality of state recovery, quantified by…
Quantum state tomography aims to determine the quantum state of a system from measured data and is an essential tool for quantum information science. When dealing with continuous variable quantum states of light, tomography is often done by measuring the field amplitudes at different optical phases using homodyne detection. The quadrature-phase homodyne measurement outputs a continuous variable, so to reduce the computational cost of tomography, researchers often discretize the measurements. We show that this can be done without significantly degrading the fidelity between the estimated state …
Time-bin qubits, where information is encoded in a single photon at different times, have been widely used in optical fiber and waveguide based quantum communications. With the recent developments in distributed quantum computation, it is logical to ask whether time-bin encoded qubits may be useful in that context. We have recently realized a time-bin qubit controlled-phase (C-Phase) gate using a 2 X 2 optical switch based on a lithium niobate waveguide, with which we demonstrated the generation of an entangled state. However, the experiment was performed with only a pair of input states, and …
Long-term quantum coherence constitutes one of the main challenges when engineering quantum devices. However, easily accessible means to quantify complex decoherence mechanisms are not readily available, nor are sufficiently stable systems. We harness novel phase-space methods - expressed through non-Gaussian convolutions of highly singular Glauber-Sudarshan quasiprobabilities - to dynamically monitor quantum coherence in polariton condensates with significantly enhanced coherence times. Via intensity- and time-resolved reconstructions of such phase-space functions from homodyne detection data…
The exponential growth of photonic quantum technologies is driving the demand of tools for measuring the quality of their information carriers. One of the most prominent is Stimulated Emission Tomography (SET), which uses classical coherent fields to measure the Joint Spectral Amplitude (JSA) of photon pairs with high speed and resolution. While the modulus of the JSA can be directly addressed from a single intensity measurement, the retrieval of the Joint Spectral Phase (JSP) is far more challenging and received minor attentions. However, a wide class of spontaneous sources of technological r…
A single photon has many physical degrees of freedom (DOF) that can carry the state of a high-dimensional quantum system. Nevertheless, only a single DOF is usually used in any specific demonstration. Furthermore, when more DOF are being used, they are analyzed and measured one at a time. We introduce a two-qubit information system, realized by two degrees of freedom of a single photon: polarization and time. The photon arrival time is divided into two time-bins representing a qubit, while its polarization state represents a second qubit. The time difference between the two time-bins is create…
We review experimental work on the measurement of the quantum state of optical fields, and the relevant theoretical background. The basic technique of optical homodyne tomography is described with particular attention paid to the role played by balanced homodyne detection in this process. We discuss some of the original single-mode squeezed-state measurements as well as recent developments including: other field states, multimode measurements, array detection, and other new homodyne schemes. We also discuss applications of state measurement techniques to an area of scientific and technological…
We measure the joint Q-function of a multi-spatial-mode field using a charge-coupled device array detector in an unbalanced heterodyne configuration. The intensity pattern formed by interference between a weak signal field and a strong local oscillator is resolved using Fourier analysis and used to reconstruct quadrature amplitude statistics for 22 spatial modes simultaneously. The local oscillator and signal propagate at an angle of 12 mrad thus shifting the classical noise to modes that do not overlap with the signal. In this configuration, balanced detection is not necessary.
We report on an intrinsic relationship between the maximum-likelihood quantum-state estimation and the representation of the signal. A quantum analogy of the transfer function determines the space where the reconstruction should be done without the need for any ad hoc truncations of the Hilbert space. An illustration of this method is provided by a simple yet practically important tomography of an optical signal registered by realistic binary detectors.
We employ quantum state and process tomography with time-bin qubits to benchmark a city-wide metropolitan quantum communication system. Over this network, we implement real-time feedback control systems for stabilizing the phase of the time-bin qubits, and obtain a 99.3% quantum process fidelity to the ideal channel, indicating the high quality of the whole quantum communication system. This allows us to implement field trial of high performance quantum key distribution using coherent one way protocol with average quantum bit error rate and visibility of 0.25% and 99.2% during 12 hours over 61…
Wiener-Khinchin theorem, the fact that the autocorrelation function of a time process has a spectral decomposition given by its power spectrum intensity, can be used in many disciplines. However, the applications based on a quantum counterpart of Wiener-Khinchin theorem that provides a translation between time-energy degrees of freedom of biphoton wavefunction still remains relatively unexplored. Here, we use a quantum Wiener-Khinchin theorem (QWKT) to state that two-photon joint spectral intensity and the cross-correlation of two-photon temporal signal can be connected by making a Fourier tra…
We implement a compressive quantum state tomography capable of reconstructing any arbitrary low-rank spectral-temporal optical signal with extremely few measurement settings and without any \emph{ad hoc} assumptions about the initially unknown signal. This is carried out with a quantum pulse gate, a device that flexibly implements projections onto arbitrary user-specified optical modes. We present conclusive experimental results for both temporal pulsed modes and frequency bins, which showcase the versatility of our randomized compressive method and thereby introduce a universal optical recons…
Semiconductor quantum dots are probably the preferred choice for interfacing anchored, matter spin qubits and flying photonic qubits. While full tomography of a flying qubit or light polarization is in general straightforward, matter spin tomography is a challenging and resource-consuming task. Here we present a novel all-optical method for conducting full tomography of quantum-dot-confined spins. Our method is applicable for electronic spin configurations such as the conduction-band electron, the valence-band hole, and for electron-hole pairs such as the bright and the dark exciton. We excite…
We investigate quantum tomography in scenarios where prior information restricts the state space to a smooth manifold of lower dimensionality. By considering stability we provide a general framework that relates the topology of the manifold to the minimal number of binary measurement settings that is necessary to discriminate any two states on the manifold. We apply these findings to cases where the subset of states under consideration is given by states with bounded rank, fixed spectrum, given unitary symmetry or taken from a unitary orbit. For all these cases we provide both upper and lower …

Ultrafast electron diffraction and time-resolved serial crystallography are the basis of the ongoing revolution in capturing at the atomic level of detail the structural dynamics of molecules. However, most experiments employ the classical "ball-and-stick" depictions, and the information of molecular quantum states, such as the density matrix, is missing. Here, we introduce a framework for the preparation and ultrafast coherent diffraction from rotational wave packets of molecules, and we establish a new variant of quantum state tomography for ultrafast electron diffraction to characterize the…
High data acquisition rates and low-noise detection of ultracold neutral atoms present important challenges for the state tomography and interferometric application of entangled quantum states in Bose-Einstein condensates. We create Bose-Einstein condensates of $2\times10^5$ atoms with no discernible thermal fraction within $3.3$ s using a hybrid evaporation approach in a magnetic/optical trap. For the high-fidelity tomography of many-body quantum states in the spin…

Superconducting circuits offer a scalable platform for the construction of large-scale quantum networks where information can be encoded in multiple temporal modes of propagating microwaves. Characterization of such microwave signals with a method extendable to an arbitrary number of temporal modes with a single detector and demonstration of their phase-robust nature are of great interest. Here we show the on-demand generation and Wigner tomography of a microwave time-bin qubit with superconducting circuit quantum electrodynamics architecture. We perform the tomography with a single heterodyne…
In this article, we investigate the efficiency of photonic state tomography in the presence of fiber attenuation. The theoretical formalism of the photon loss is provided by implementing methods from the theory of open quantum systems. The quantum state is reconstructed from photon counts obtained for symmetric informationally complete POVMs. The number of photons that reach the detectors is numerically modeled by the binomial distribution, which describes the loss of light caused by the medium. This approach allows us to study the quality of state tomography versus the length of the fiber. In…
