The article undertakes the problem of pure state estimation from projective measurements based on photon counting. Two generic frames for qubit tomography are considered -- one composed of the elements of the SIC-POVM and the other defined by the vectors from the mutually unbiased bases (MUBs). Both frames are combined with the method of least squares in order to reconstruct a sample of input qubits with imperfect measurements. The accuracy of each frame is quantified by the average fidelity and purity. The efficiency of the frames is compared and discussed. The method can be generalized to higher-dimensional states and transferred to other fields where the problem of complex vectors reconstruction appears.
In this article, we introduce a framework for quantum state tomography of qutrits by projective measurements. The framework is based on photon-counting with measurement results distorted due to the Poisson noise and dark counts. Two different measurement schemes are investigated numerically and compared in terms of their efficiency for distinct numbers of photons per measurement. The accuracy of state reconstruction is quantified by figures of merit which are presented on graphs versus the amount of noise.
In this article, we introduce a framework for Hamiltonian tomography of multi-qubit systems with random noise. We adopt the quantum quench protocol to reconstruct a many-body Hamiltonian by local measurements that are distorted by random unitary operators and time uncertainty. In particular, we consider a transverse field Ising Hamiltonians describing interactions of two spins $1/2$ and three-qubit Hamiltonians of a heteronuclear system within the radio-frequency field. For a sample of random Hamiltonians, we report the fidelity of reconstruction versus the amount of noise quantified by two pa…
We explore the use of weak quantum measurements for single-qubit quantum state tomography processes. Weak measurements are those where the coupling between the qubit and the measurement apparatus is weak; this results in the quantum state being disturbed less than in the case of a projective measurement. We employ a weak measurement tomography protocol developed by Das and Arvind, which they claim offers a new method of extracting information from quantum systems. We test the Das-Arvind scheme for various measurement strengths, and ensemble sizes, and reproduce their results using a sequential…
In this article, we investigate the problem of state reconstruction of four-level quantum systems. A realistic scenario is considered with measurement results distorted by random unitary operators. Two frames which define injective measurements are applied and compared. By introducing arbitrary rotations, we can test the performance of the framework versus the amount of experimental noise. The results of numerical simulations are depicted on graphs and discussed. In particular, a class of entangled states is reconstructed. The concurrence is used as a figure of merit in order to quantify how w…
We explore the possibility of using "weak" measurements to carry out quantum state tomography. Given a certain fixed number of copies of identically prepared states of a qubit, we simulate state tomography using weak as well as projective measurements. Due to the collapse of the state after measurement, we cannot re-use the state after a projective measurement. If the coupling strength between the quantum system and the measurement device is made weaker, the disturbance caused to the state can be lowered. This then allows us to re-use the same member of the ensemble for further measurements an…

Optimal generalized measurements for state estimation are well understood. However, practical quantum state tomography is typically performed using a fixed set of projective measurements and the question of how to choose these measurements has been largely unexplored in the literature. In this work we develop theoretical asymptotic bounds for the average fidelity of pure qubit tomography using measurement sets whose axes correspond to vertices of Platonic solids. We also present complete simulations of maximum likelihood tomography for mixed qubit states using the Platonic solid measurements. …
A projective measurement of energy (PME) on a quantum system is a quantum measurement, determined by the Hamiltonian of the system. PME protocols exist when the Hamiltonian is given in advance. Unknown Hamiltonians can be identified by quantum tomography, but the time cost to achieve a given accuracy increases exponentially with the size of the quantum system. In this letter, we improve the time cost by adapting quantum phase estimation, an algorithm designed for computational problems, to measurements on physical systems. We present a PME protocol without quantum tomography for Hamiltonians w…
We introduce quantum tomography on locally compact Abelian groups $G$. A linear map from the set of quantum states on the $C^*$-algebra $A(G)$ generated by the projective unitary representation of $G$ to the space of characteristic functions is constructed. The dual map determining symbols of quantum observables from $A(G)$ is derived. Given a characteristic function of a state the quantum tomogram consisting a set of probability distributions is introduced. We provide three examples in which $G={\mathbb R}$ (the optical tomography), $G={\mathbb Z}_n$ (corresponding to measurements in mutually…
It is natural to ask how to utilize actual measurements, such as the so-called IQ-plane data obtained in the dispersive readout of transmon qubits, in the estimation of the state of a quantum system. We formulate the joint problem of discrimination and quantum state tomography as a bilevel optimization problem and show how to solve it. The use of the joint problem can improve the sample complexity (or the reconstruction error for a fixed number of measurements) compared with traditional techniques that decompose the problem into the discrimination and state tomography based on the estimated ex…
We propose a method for the tomographic reconstruction of qubit states for a general class of solid state systems in which the Hamiltonians are represented by spin operators, e.g., with Heisenberg-, $XXZ$-, or XY- type exchange interactions. We analyze the implementation of the projective operator measurements, or spin measurements, on qubit states. All the qubit states for the spin Hamiltonians can be reconstructed by using experimental data.
We present the experimental quantum tomography of 7- and 8-dimensional quantum systems based on projective measurements in the mutually unbiased basis (MUB-QT). One of the advantages of MUB-QT is that it requires projections from a minimal number of bases to be performed. In our scheme, the higher dimensional quantum systems are encoded using the propagation modes of single photons, and we take advantage of the capabilities of amplitude- and phase-modulation of programmable spatial light modulators to implement the MUB-QT.
Algebraic geometrical concepts are playing an increasing role in quantum applications such as coding, cryptography, tomography and computing. We point out here the prominent role played by Galois fields viewed as cyclotomic extensions of the integers modulo a prime characteristic $p$. They can be used to generate efficient cyclic encoding, for transmitting secrete quantum keys, for quantum state recovery and for error correction in quantum computing. Finite projective planes and their generalization are the geometric counterpart to cyclotomic concepts, their coordinatization involves Galois fi…
Advances in quantum technology require scalable techniques to efficiently extract information from a quantum system, such as expectation values of observables or its entropy. Traditional tomography is limited to a handful of qubits and shadow tomography has been suggested as a scalable replacement for larger systems. Shadow tomography is conventionally analysed based on outcomes of ideal projective measurements on the system upon application of randomised unitaries. Here, we suggest that shadow tomography can be much more straightforwardly formulated for generalised measurements, or positive o…
Quantum state tomography is an important tool for quantum communication, computation, metrology, and simulation. Efficient quantum state tomography on a high dimensional quantum system is still a challenging problem. Here, we propose a novel quantum state tomography method, auxiliary Hilbert space tomography, to avoid pre-rotations before measurement in a quantum state tomography experiment. Our method requires projective measurements in a higher dimensional space that contains the subspace that includes the prepared states. We experimentally demonstrate this method with orbital angular moment…
We present a general formalism for charecterizing 2-time quantum states, describing pre- and post-selected quantum systems. The most general 2-time state is characterized by a `density vector' that is independent of measurements performed between the preparation and post-selection. We provide a method for performing tomography of an unknown 2-time density vector. This procedure, which cannot be implemented by weak or projective measurements, brings new insight to the fundamental role played by Kraus operators in quantum measurements. Finally, after showing that general states and measurements …
We show that the density matrix of a spin-l system can be described entirely in terms of the measurement statistics of projective spin measurements along a minimum of 4l+1 different spin directions. It is thus possible to represent the complete quantum statistics of any N-level system within the spherically symmetric three dimensional space defined by the spin vector. An explicit method for reconstructing the density matrix of a spin-1 system from the measurement statistics of five non-orthogonal spin directions is presented and the generalization to spin-l systems is discussed.
We pose and solve a problem concerning consistent assignment of quantum probabilities to a set of bases associated with maximal projective measurements. We show that our solution is optimal. We also consider some consequences of the main theorem in the paper in conjunction with Gleason's theorem. Some potential applications to state tomography and probabilistic quantum secret-sharing scheme are discussed.
In this work we present an algorithm of building an adequate model of polarizing quantum state measurement. This model takes into account chromatic aberration of the basis change transformation caused by the parasitic dispersion of the wave plates crystal and finite radiation spectral bandwidth. We show that the chromatic aberration reduces the amount of information in the measurements results. Using the information matrix approach we estimate the impact of this effect on the qubit state reconstruction fidelity for different values of sample size and spectral bandwidth. We also demonstrate tha…
Measurement of the energy eigenvalues (spectrum) of a multi-qubit system has recently become possible by qubit tunneling spectroscopy (QTS). In the standard QTS experiments, an incoherent probe qubit is strongly coupled to one of the qubits of the system in such a way that its incoherent tunneling rate provides information about the energy eigenvalues of the original (source) system. In this paper, we generalize QTS by coupling the probe qubit to many source qubits. We show that by properly choosing the couplings, one can perform projective measurements of the source system energy eigenstates …
While measuring the orbital angular momentum state of bright light beams can be performed using imaging techniques, a full characterization at the single-photon level is challenging. For applications to quantum optics and quantum information science, such characterization is an essential capability. Here, we present a setup to perform the quantum state tomography of photonic qubits encoded in this degree of freedom. The method is based on a projective technique using spatial mode projection via fork holograms and single-mode fibers inserted into an interferometer. The alignment and calibration…

State of a $d$-dimensional quantum system can only be inferred by performing an informationally complete measurement with $m\geqslant d^2$ outcomes. However, an experimentally accessible measurement can be informationally incomplete. Here we show that a single informationally incomplete measuring apparatus is still able to provide all the information about the quantum system if applied several times in a row. We derive a necessary and sufficient condition for such a measuring apparatus and give illustrative examples for qubits, qutrits, general $d$-level systems, and composite systems of $n$ q…
State and measurement tomography make assumptions about the experimental states or measurements. These assumptions are often not justified because state preparation and measurement errors are unavoidable in practice. Here we describe how the Gram matrix associated with the states and measurement operators can be estimated via semidefinite programming if the states and the measurements are so called globally completable. This is for instance the case if the unknown measurements are known to be projective and non-degenerate. The computed Gram matrix determines the states, and the measurement ope…
We present a scheme for full quantum state tomography tailored for two spin qubits in a double quantum dot. A set of 15 quantum states allows to determine the density matrix in this two-qubit space by projective measurement. In this paper we choose a set gained from mutually unbiased bases. We determine how those 15 projections can be represented by charge measurements after a spin-to-charge conversion and the application of quantum gates. The quantum gates include exchange-based gates as well as rotations by electron spin resonance (ESR). We assume the experimental realization of ESR operatio…
We propose an experiment that realizes a symmetric informationally complete (SIC) probability-operator measurement (POM) in the four-dimensional Hilbert space of a qubit pair. The qubit pair is carried by a single photon as a polarization qubit and a path qubit. The implementation of the SIC POM is accomplished with the means of linear optics. The experimental scheme exploits a new approach to SIC POMs that uses a two-step process: a measurement with full-rank outcomes, followed by a projective measurement on a basis that is chosen in accordance with the result of the first measurement. The ba…
Determining an unknown quantum state from an ensemble of identical systems is a fundamental, yet experimentally demanding, task in quantum science. Here we study the number of measurement bases needed to fully characterize an arbitrary multi-mode state containing a definite number of photons, or an arbitrary mixture of such states. We show this task can be achieved using only linear optics and photon counting, which yield a practical though non-universal set of projective measurements. We derive the minimum number of measurement settings required and numerically show that this lower bound is s…
One of the peculiar features in quantum mechanics is that a superposition of macroscopically distinct states can exits. In optical system, this is highlighted by a superposition of coherent states (SCS), i.e. a superposition of classical states. Recently this highly nontrivial quantum state and its variant have been demonstrated experimentally. Here we demonstrate the superposition of coherent states in quantum measurement which is also a key concept in quantum mechanics. More precisely, we propose and implement a projection measurement onto the arbitrary superposition of the SCS bases in opti…
In recent years there has been a significant development of the dynamical map formalism for initially correlated states of a system and its environment. Based on some of these results, we study quantum process tomography for initially correlated states of the system and the environment. This is beyond the usual assumption that the state of the system and the environment are initially uncorrelated. Since quantum process tomography is an experimental procedure, we wind up having to study the role of preparation of input states for open quantum experiments. We work out a theory for the general pr…
Finding the least measurement settings to determine an arbitrary pure state has been long known as the Pauli problem. In the fixed measurement scheme four orthonormal bases are required even though there are far less parameters in a pure state. Peres conjectured that two unbiased bases suffice to determine a pure state up to some finite ambiguities. Here we shall at first prove Peres conjecture in the case of $d=3,4$, namely, two unbiased measurements determine a pure state up to to 6 and 16 candidates for a qutrit and ququad, respectively. And then, taking Peres' conjecture for established, w…

The purpose of this paper is to introduce techniques of obtaining optimal ways to determine a d-level quantum state or distinguish such states. It entails designing constrained elementary measurements extracted from maximal abelian subsets of a unitary basis U for the operator algebra B(H) of a Hilbert space H of finite dimension d > 3 or, after choosing an orthonormal basis for H, for the *-algebra Md of complex matrices of order d > 3. Illustrations are given for the techniques. It is shown that the Schwinger basis U of unitary operators can give for d, a product of primes p and a, the ideal…
We propose a simple scheme to reduce readout errors in experiments on quantum systems with finite number of measurement outcomes. Our method relies on performing classical post-processing which is preceded by Quantum Detector Tomography, i.e., the reconstruction of a Positive-Operator Valued Measure (POVM) describing the given quantum measurement device. If the measurement device is affected only by an invertible classical noise, it is possible to correct the outcome statistics of future experiments performed on the same device. To support the practical applicability of this scheme for near-te…
We introduce a class of informationally complete positive-operator-valued measures which are, in analogy with a tight frame, "as close as possible" to orthonormal bases for the space of quantum states. These measures are distinguished by an exceptionally simple state-reconstruction formula which allows "painless" quantum state tomography. Complete sets of mutually unbiased bases and symmetric informationally complete positive-operator-valued measures are both members of this class, the latter being the unique minimal rank-one members. Recast as ensembles of pure quantum states, the rank-one me…
We address the possibility of using even/odd states of orbital angular momentum (OAM) of photons for the quantum information tasks. Single photon qubit states and two photon entangled states in even/odd basis of OAM are considered. We present a method for the tomography and general projective measurement in even/odd basis. With the general projective measurement, we show the Bell violation and quantum cryptography with Bell's inequality. We also describe hyper and hybrid entanglement of even/odd OAM states along with polarization, which can be applied in the implementation of quantum protocols…

A single Yb atom is loaded into a high-finesse optical cavity with a moving lattice, and its nuclear spin state is manipulated using a nuclear magnetic resonance technique. A highly reliable quantum state control with fidelity and purity greater than 0.98 and 0.96, respectively, is confirmed by the full quantum state tomography; a projective measurement with high speed (500us) and high efficiency (0.98) is accomplished using the cavity QED technique. Because a hyperfine coupling is induced only when the projective measurement is operational, the long coherence times (T_1 = 0.49 s and T_2 = 0.1…
Conditional quantum optical processes enable a wide range of technologies from generation of highly non-classical states to implementation of quantum logic operations. The process fidelity that can be achieved in a realistic implementation depends on a number of system parameters. Here we experimentally examine Fock-state filtration, a canonical example of a broad class of conditional quantum operations acting on a single optical field mode. This operation is based upon interference of the mode to be manipulated with an auxiliary single-photon state at a beam splitter, resulting in the entangl…
