Using finite difference operators, we define a notion of boundary and surface measure for configuration sets under Poisson measures. A Margulis-Russo type identity and a co-area formula are stated with applications to deviation inequalities and functional inequalities, and bounds are obtained on the associated isoperimetric constants.
In this article, new curvature conditions are introduced to establish functional inequalities including gradient estimates, Harnack inequalities and transportation-cost inequalities on manifolds with non-convex boundary.
In this article, functional inequalities for diffusion semigroups on Riemannian manifolds (possibly with boundary) are established, which are equivalent to pinched Ricci curvature, along with gradient estimates, $L^p$-inequalities and log-Sobolev inequalities. These results are further extended to differential manifolds carrying geometric flows. As application, it is shown that they can be used in particular to characterize general geometric flow and Ricci flow by functional inequalities.
We show that certain functional inequalities, e.g.\ Nash-type and Poincaré-type inequalities, for infinitesimal generators of $C_0$ semigroups are preserved under subordination in the sense of Bochner. Our result improves \cite[Theorem 1.3]{BM} by A.\ Bendikov and P.\ Maheux for fractional powers, and it also holds for non-symmetric settings. As an application, we will derive hypercontractivity, supercontractivity and ultracontractivity of subordinate semigroups.
A class of functional differential equations are investigated. Using the Girsanov-transformation argument we establish the quadratic transportation cost inequalities for a class of finite-dimensional neutral functional stochastic differential equations and infinite-dimensional neutral functional stochastic partial differential equations under different metrics.
We continue our investigation on the transportation-information inequalities $W_pI$ for a symmetric markov process, introduced and studied in \cite{GLWY}. We prove that $W_pI$ implies the usual transportation inequalities $W_pH$, then the corresponding concentration inequalities for the invariant measure $μ$. We give also a direct proof that the spectral gap in the space of Lipschitz functions for a diffusion process implies $W_1I$ (a result due to \cite{GLWY}) and a Cheeger type's isoperimetric inequality. Finally we exhibit relations between transportation-information inequalities and a fami…
Using coupling by change of measure and an approximation technique, Wang's Harnack inequalities are established for a class of functional SDEs driven by subordinate Brownian motions. The results cover the corresponding ones in the case without delay.
By using Girsanov transformation and martingale representation, Talagrand-type transportation cost inequalities, with respect to both the uniform and the $L^2$ distances on the global free path space, are established for the segment process associated to a class of neutral functional stochastic differential equations. Neutral functional stochastic partial differential equations are also investigated.
By using coupling arguments, Harnack type inequalities are established for a class of stochastic (functional) differential equations with multiplicative noises and non-Lipschitzian coefficients. To construct the required couplings, two results on existence and uniqueness of solutions on an open domain are presented.
Non-Gaussian concentration estimates are obtained for invariant probability measures of reversible Markov processes. We show that the functional inequalities approach combined with a suitable Lyapunov condition allows us to circumvent the classical Lipschitz assumption of the observables. Our method is general and covers diffusions as well as pure-jump Markov processes on unbounded spaces.
In a companion article we have introduced a notion of multiscale functional inequalities for functions $X(A)$ of an ergodic stationary random field $A$ on the ambient space $\mathbb R^d$. These inequalities are multiscale weighted versions of standard Poincaré, covariance, and logarithmic Sobolev inequalities. They hold for all the examples of fields $A$ arising in the modelling of heterogeneous materials in the applied sciences whereas their standard versions are much more restrictive. In this contribution we first investigate the link between multiscale functional inequalities and more stand…
Using the renewal approach we prove exponential inequalities for additive functionals and empirical processes of ergodic Markov chains, thus obtaining counterparts of inequalities for sums of independent random variables. The inequalities do not require functions of the chain to be bounded and moreover all the involved constants are given by explicit formulas whenever the usual drift condition holds, which may be of interest in practical applications e.g. to MCMC algorithms.
In this paper we deal with free functional inequalities on the circle. There are some interesting changes as opposed to the classical case. For example, the free Poincaré inequality has a slight change which seems to account for the lack of invariance under rotations of the base measure. Another instance is the modified Wasserstein distance on the circle which provides the tools for analyzing transportation, Log-Sobolev, and HWI inequalities. These new phenomena also indicate that they have a classical counterpart, which does not seem to have been investigated before.
Consider an ergodic stationary random field $A$ on the ambient space $\mathbb R^d$. In a companion article, we introduced the notion of multiscale (first-order) functional inequalities, which extend standard functional inequalities like Poincaré, covariance, and logarithmic Sobolev inequalities in the probability space, while still ensuring strong concentration properties. We also developed a constructive approach to these functional inequalities, proving their validity for prototypical examples including Gaussian fields, Poisson random tessellations, and random sequential adsorption (RSA) mod…
Consider an ergodic stationary random field $A$ on the ambient space $\mathbb R^d$. In order to establish concentration properties for nonlinear functions $Z(A)$, it is standard to appeal to functional inequalities like Poincaré or logarithmic Sobolev inequalities in the probability space. These inequalities are however only known to hold for a restricted class of laws (product measures, Gaussian measures with integrable covariance, or more general Gibbs measures with nicely behaved Hamiltonians). In this contribution, we introduce variants of these inequalities, which we refer to as multiscal…
According to the theory of functional inequalities, a non-symmetric Markov semigroup has better properties than the corresponding symmetric one. For instance, there exist non-symmetric Markov semigroups which are hypercontractive (and thus converge exponentially in both $L^2$ and entropy), but the symmetric ones are even not ergodic. In this paper, we aim to search for reasonable conditions to ensure that a non-symmetric Markov semigroup and its symmetrization share the properties of exponential convergence, uniform integrability, hypercontractivity, and supercontractivity. Since in the symmet…
This work shows how exponential concentration inequalities for additive functionals of stochastic processes over a finite time interval can be derived from concentration inequalities for martingales. The approach is entirely probabilistic and naturally includes time-inhomogeneous and non-stationary processes as well as initial laws concentrated on a single point. The class of processes studied includes martingales, Markov processes and general square integrable processes. The general approach is complemented by a simple and direct method for martingales, diffusions and discrete-time Markov pro…
By constructing a new coupling, the log-Harnack inequality is established for the functional solution of a delay stochastic differential equation with multiplicative noise. As applications, the strong Feller property and heat kernel estimates w.r.t. quasi-invariant probability measures are derived for the associated transition semigroup of the solution. The dimension-free Harnack inequality in the sense of \cite{W97} is also investigated.
In this article we derive Talagrand's $T_2$ inequality on the path space w.r.t. the maximum norm for various stochastic processes, including solutions of one-dimensional stochastic differential equations with measurable drifts, backward stochastic differential equations, and the value process of optimal stopping problems. The proofs do not make use of the Girsanov method, but of pathwise arguments. These are used to show that all our processes of interest are Lipschitz transformations of processes which are known to satisfy desired functional inequalities.
Let $μ$ and $ν$ be two probability measures on $\R^d$, where $μ(\d x)= \e^{-V(x)}\d x$ for some $V\in C^1(\R^d)$. Explicit sufficient conditions on $V$ and $ν$ are presented such that $μ*ν$ satisfies the log-Sobolev, Poincaré and super Poincaré inequalities. In particular, the recent results on the log-Sobolev inequality derived in \cite{Z} for convolutions of the Gaussian measure and compactly supported probability measures are improved and extended.
Information-theory based variational principles have proven effective at providing scalable uncertainty quantification (i.e. robustness) bounds for quantities of interest in the presence of nonparametric model-form uncertainty. In this work, we combine such variational formulas with functional inequalities (Poincar{é}, $\log$-Sobolev, Liapunov functions) to derive explicit uncertainty quantification bounds for time-averaged observables, comparing a Markov process to a second (not necessarily Markov) process. These bounds are well-behaved in the infinite-time limit and apply to steady-states of…
In recent years, a number of functional inequalities have been derived for Poisson random measures, with a wide range of applications. In this paper, we prove that such inequalities can be extended to the setting of marked temporal point processes, under mild assumptions on their Papangelou conditional intensity. First, we derive a Poincaré inequality. Second, we prove two transportation cost inequalities. The first one refers to functionals of marked point processes with a Papangelou conditional intensity and is new even in the setting of Poisson random measures. The second one refers to the …
The existence and uniqueness of the mild solutions for a class of degenerate functional SPDEs are obtained, where the drift is assumed to be Hölder-Dini continuous. Moreover, the non-explosion of the solution is proved under some reasonable conditions. In addition, the Harnack is derived by the coupling by change of measure. Finally, the shift Harnack inequality is obtained for the equations without delay, which is new even in the non-degenerate case.
In a statistical mechanics model with unbounded spins, we prove uniqueness of the Gibbs measure under various assumptions on finite volume functional inequalities. We follow the approach of G. Royer (1999) and obtain uniqueness by showing convergence properties of a Glauber-Langevin dynamics. The result was known when the measures on the box $[-n,n]^d$ (with free boundary conditions) satisfied the same logarithmic Sobolev inequality. We generalize this in two directions: either the constants may be allowed to grow sub-linearly in the diameter, or we may suppose a weaker inequality than log-Sob…
In this paper we prove multilevel concentration inequalities for bounded functionals $f = f(X_1, \ldots, X_n)$ of random variables $X_1, \ldots, X_n$ that are either independent or satisfy certain logarithmic Sobolev inequalities. The constants in the tail estimates depend on the operator norms of $k$-tensors of higher order differences of $f$. We provide applications in both dependent and independent random variables. This includes deviation inequalities for empirical processes $f(X) = \sup_{g \in \mathcal{F}} \lvert g(X) \rvert$ and suprema of homogeneous chaos in bounded random variables in…
We prove new concentration estimates for random variables that are functionals of a Poisson measure defined on a general measure space. Our results are specifically adapted to geometric applications, and are based on a pervasive use of a powerful logarithmic Sobolev inequality proved by L. Wu (2000), as well as on several variations of the so-called Herbst argument. We provide several applications, in particular to edge counting and more general length power functionals in random geometric graphs, as well as to the convex distance for random point measures recently introduced by M. Reitzner (2…
In this paper, we establish concentration inequalities both for functionals of the whole solution on an interval [0, T ] of an additive SDE driven by a fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter H $\in$ (0, 1) and for functionals of discrete-time observations of this process. Then, we apply this general result to specific functionals related to discrete and continuous-time occupation measures of the process.
We review here some recent results by the authors, and various coauthors, on (weak, super) Poincaré inequalities, transportation-information inequalities or logarithmic Sobolev inequality via a quite simple and efficient technique: Lyapunov conditions.
Following the recent work [13] fulfilled in the discrete case, we pro- vide in this paper new intertwining relations for semigroups of one-dimensional diffusions. Various applications of these results are investigated, among them the famous variational formula of the spectral gap derived by Chen and Wang [15] together with a new criterion ensuring that the logarithmic Sobolev inequality holds. We complete this work by revisiting some classical examples, for which new estimates on the optimal constants are derived.
We prove a stochastic formula for the Gaussian relative entropy in the spirit of Borell's formula for the Laplace transform. As an application, we give unified and short proofs of a number of functional inequalities.
This work is devoted to direct mass transportation proofs of families of functional inequalities in the context of one-dimensional free probability, avoiding random matrix approximation. The inequalities include the free form of the transportation, Log-Sobolev, HWI interpolation and Brunn-Minkowski inequalities for strictly convex potentials. Sharp constants and some extended versions are put forward. The paper also addresses two versions of free Poincaré inequalities and their interpretation in terms of spectral properties of Jacobi operators. The last part establishes the corresponding inequ…
With direct and simple proofs, we establish Poincaré type inequalities (including Poincaré inequalities, weak Poincaré inequalities and super Poincaré inequalities), entropy inequalities and Beckner-type inequalities for non-local Dirichlet forms. The proofs are efficient for non-local Dirichlet forms with general jump kernel, and also work for $L^p (p>1)$ settings. Our results yield a new sufficient condition for fractional Poincaré inequalities, which were recently studied in \cite{MRS,Gre}. To our knowledge this is the first result providing entropy inequalities and Beckner-type inequalitie…
We introduce the notion of a weighted lift zonoid and show that, for properly chosen weights v, the ordering condition on a measure μ, formulated in terms of the weighted lift zonoids of this measure, leads to certain functional inequalities for this measure, such as non-linear extensions of Bobkov's shift inequality and weighted inverse log-Sobolev inequality. The choice of the weight K, involved in our version of the inverse log-Sobolev inequality, differs substantially from those available in the literature, and requires the weight v, involved into the definition of the weighted lift zonoid…
For sub-Riemannian manifolds with a chosen complement, we first establish the derivative formula and integration by parts formula on path space with respect to a natural gradient operator. By using these formulae, we then show that upper and lower bounds of the horizontal Ricci curvature correspond to functional inequalities on path space analogous to what has been established in Riemannian geometry by Aaron Naber, such as gradient inequalities, log-Sobolev and Poincaré inequalities.
We prove intertwining relations by twisted gradients for Markov semi-groups. These relations are applied to Brascamp-Lieb type inequalities and spectral gap results. It generalizes the results of [1] from the Euclidean space to Riemannian manifolds and to non symmetric twisted operators.
The use of Lyapunov conditions for proving functional inequalities was initiated in [5]. It was shown in [4, 30] that there is an equivalence between a Poincar{é} inequality, the existence of some Lyapunov function and the exponential integrability of hitting times. In the present paper, we close the scheme of the interplay between Lyapunov conditions and functional inequalities by $\bullet$ showing that strong functional inequalities are equivalent to Lyapunov type conditions; $\bullet$ showing that these Lyapunov conditions are characterized by the finiteness of generalized exponential momen…
This paper is devoted to the study of probability measures with heavy tails. Using the Lyapunov function approach we prove that such measures satisfy different kind of functional inequalities such as weak Poincaré and weak Cheeger, weighted Poincaré and weighted Cheeger inequalities and their dual forms. Proofs are short and we cover very large situations. For product measures on $\R^n$ we obtain the optimal dimension dependence using the mass transportation method. Then we derive (optimal) isoperimetric inequalities. Finally we deal with spherically symmetric measures. We recover and improve …

In this note we introduce and prove local and potential independent transportation, Log-Sobolev and HWI inequalities in one dimensional free probability on compact intervals which are sharp. We recover using this approach a free transportation inequality on the whole real line which was put forward recently by M. Maida and E. Maurel-Segala.
The aim of this paper is to establish various functional inequalities for the convolution of a compactly supported measure and a standard Gaussian distribution on Rd. We especially focus on getting good dependence of the constants on the dimension. We prove that the Poincar{é} inequality holds with a dimension-free bound. For the logarithmic Sobolev inequality, we improve the best known results (Zimmermann, JFA 2013) by getting a bound that grows linearly with the dimension. We also establish transport-entropy inequalities for various transport costs.
Perturbations of super Poincaré and weak Poincaré inequalities for Lévy type Dirichlet forms are studied. When the range of jumps is finite our results are natural extensions to the corresponding ones derived earlier for diffusion processes; and we show that the study for the situation with infinite range of jumps is essentially different. Some examples are presented to illustrate the optimality of our results.
This is a continuation of our previous work 0712.4092. It is well known that various isoperimetric inequalities imply their functional ``counterparts'', but in general this is not an equivalence. We show that under certain convexity assumptions (e.g. for log-concave probability measures in Euclidean space), the latter implication can in fact be reversed for very general inequalities, generalizing a reverse form of Cheeger's inequality due to Buser and Ledoux. We develop a coherent single framework for passing between isoperimetric inequalities, Orlicz-Sobolev functional inequalities and capaci…
As a consequence of the Bochner formula for the Bismut connection acting on gradients, we show sharp universal Poincaré and log-Sobolev inequalities along solutions to generalized Ricci flow. Using the two-form potential we define a twisted connection on spacetime which determines an adapted Brownian motion on the frame bundle, yielding an adapted Malliavin gradient on path space. We show a Bochner formula for this operator, leading to characterizations of generalized Ricci flow in terms of universal Poincaré and log-Sobolev type inequalities for the associated Malliavin gradient and Ornstein-…
Let $V\in C^2(\R^d)$ such that $μ_V(\d x):= \e^{-V(x)}\,\d x$ is a probability measure, and let $å\in (0,2)$. Explicit criteria are presented for the $å$-stable-like Dirichlet form $$\E_{å,V}(f,f):= \int_{\R^d\times\R^d} \ff{|f(x)-f(y)|^2}{|x-y|^{d+α}}\,\d y\,\e^{-V(x)}\,\d x$$ to satisfy Poincaré-type (i.e., Poincaré, weak Poincaré and super Poincaré) inequalities. As applications, sharp functional inequalities are derived for the Dirichlet form with $V$ having some typical growths. Finally, the main result of \cite{MRS} on the Poincaré inequality is strengthened
This note contains sufficient conditions for the probability density function of an arbitrary continuous univariate distribution, supported on $(0,\infty),$ such that the corresponding Mills ratio to be reciprocally convex (concave). To illustrate the applications of the main results, the reciprocal convexity (concavity) of Mills ratio of the gamma distribution is discussed in details.
We consider a class of non-homogeneous Markov chains, that contains many natural examples. Next, using martingale methods, we establish some deviation and moment inequalities for separately Lipschitz functions of such a chain, under moment conditions on some dominating random variables.
In this work, we deal with an iteration method for approximating a fixed point of a contraction mapping using the Mann's algorithm under functional random errors. We first show its almost complete convergence to the fixed point by mean of an exponential inequality and then we specify the induced rate of convergence. We finally build a confidence set for the fixed point.
In this document we are interested in entropy. Entropy is multiple, the idea is to describe the definition proposed by the physicist Clausius. Indeed, Clausius exposes in 1865 the second principle of thermodynamics and also proposes the concept of entropy. Instead of simply defining a functional, central point for the development of the second principle, it will in fact define a concept sufficiently general to be used in many fields of mathematics. In these few pages, I wish to show the role played by entropy in the field of gradient flows and functional inequalities. Starting from the definiti…
We study functional inequalities (Poincaré, Cheeger, log-Sobolev) for probability measures obtained as perturbations. Several explicit results for general measures as well as log-concave distributions are given. The initial goal of this work was to obtain explicit bounds on the constants in view of statistical applications for instance. These results are then applied to the Langevin Monte-Carlo method used in statistics in order to compute Bayesian estimators.
