Absolute camera pose regressors estimate the position and orientation of a camera from the captured image alone. Typically, a convolutional backbone with a multi-layer perceptron head is trained with images and pose labels to embed a single reference scene at a time. Recently, this scheme was extended for learning multiple scenes by replacing the MLP head with a set of fully connected layers. In this work, we propose to learn multi-scene absolute camera pose regression with Transformers, where encoders are used to aggregate activation maps with self-attention and decoders transform latent features and scenes encoding into candidate pose predictions. This mechanism allows our model to focus on general features that are informative for localization while embedding multiple scenes in parallel. We evaluate our method on commonly benchmarked indoor and outdoor datasets and show that it surpasses both multi-scene and state-of-the-art single-scene absolute pose regressors. We make our code publicly available from https://github.com/yolish/multi-scene-pose-transformer.
What does human pose tell us about a scene? We propose a task to answer this question: given human pose as input, hallucinate a compatible scene. Subtle cues captured by human pose -- action semantics, environment affordances, object interactions -- provide surprising insight into which scenes are compatible. We present a large-scale generative adversarial network for pose-conditioned scene generation. We significantly scale the size and complexity of training data, curating a massive meta-dataset containing over 19 million frames of humans in everyday environments. We double the capacity of o…

This study presents a new network (i.e., PoseLifter) that can lift a 2D human pose to an absolute 3D pose in a camera coordinate system. The proposed network estimates the absolute 3D location of a target subject and generates an improved 3D relative pose estimation compared with existing pose-lifting methods. Using the PoseLifter with a 2D pose estimator in a cascade fashion can estimate a 3D human pose from a single RGB image. In this case, we empirically prove that using realistic 2D poses synthesized with the real error distribution of 2D body joints considerably improves the performance o…
Full 3D estimation of human pose from a single image remains a challenging task despite many recent advances. In this paper, we explore the hypothesis that strong prior information about scene geometry can be used to improve pose estimation accuracy. To tackle this question empirically, we have assembled a novel $\textbf{Geometric Pose Affordance}$ dataset, consisting of multi-view imagery of people interacting with a variety of rich 3D environments. We utilized a commercial motion capture system to collect gold-standard estimates of pose and construct accurate geometric 3D CAD models of the s…

To understand and analyze human behavior, we need to capture humans moving in, and interacting with, the world. Most existing methods perform 3D human pose estimation without explicitly considering the scene. We observe however that the world constrains the body and vice-versa. To motivate this, we show that current 3D human pose estimation methods produce results that are not consistent with the 3D scene. Our key contribution is to exploit static 3D scene structure to better estimate human pose from monocular images. The method enforces Proximal Relationships with Object eXclusion and is call…
Object pose estimation is a crucial prerequisite for robots to perform autonomous manipulation in clutter. Real-world bin-picking settings such as warehouses present additional challenges, e.g., new objects are added constantly. Most of the existing object pose estimation methods assume that 3D models of the objects is available beforehand. We present a pipeline that requires minimal human intervention and circumvents the reliance on the availability of 3D models by a fast data acquisition method and a synthetic data generation procedure. This work builds on previous work on semantic segmentat…

We introduce the concept of a Visual Compiler that generates a scene specific pedestrian detector and pose estimator without any pedestrian observations. Given a single image and auxiliary scene information in the form of camera parameters and geometric layout of the scene, the Visual Compiler first infers geometrically and photometrically accurate images of humans in that scene through the use of computer graphics rendering. Using these renders we learn a scene-and-region specific spatially-varying fully convolutional neural network, for simultaneous detection, pose estimation and segmentatio…
We present a relocalization pipeline, which combines an absolute pose regression (APR) network with a novel view synthesis based direct matching module, offering superior accuracy while maintaining low inference time. Our contribution is twofold: i) we design a direct matching module that supplies a photometric supervision signal to refine the pose regression network via differentiable rendering; ii) we modify the rotation representation from the classical quaternion to SO(3) in pose regression, removing the need for balancing rotation and translation loss terms. As a result, our network Direc…

Estimating the relative rigid pose between two RGB-D scans of the same underlying environment is a fundamental problem in computer vision, robotics, and computer graphics. Most existing approaches allow only limited maximum relative pose changes since they require considerable overlap between the input scans. We introduce a novel deep neural network that extends the scope to extreme relative poses, with little or even no overlap between the input scans. The key idea is to infer more complete scene information about the underlying environment and match on the completed scans. In particular, ins…
We propose embodied scene-aware human pose estimation where we estimate 3D poses based on a simulated agent's proprioception and scene awareness, along with external third-person observations. Unlike prior methods that often resort to multistage optimization, non-causal inference, and complex contact modeling to estimate human pose and human scene interactions, our method is one-stage, causal, and recovers global 3D human poses in a simulated environment. Since 2D third-person observations are coupled with the camera pose, we propose to disentangle the camera pose and use a multi-step projecti…

We propose a new 3D holistic++ scene understanding problem, which jointly tackles two tasks from a single-view image: (i) holistic scene parsing and reconstruction---3D estimations of object bounding boxes, camera pose, and room layout, and (ii) 3D human pose estimation. The intuition behind is to leverage the coupled nature of these two tasks to improve the granularity and performance of scene understanding. We propose to exploit two critical and essential connections between these two tasks: (i) human-object interaction (HOI) to model the fine-grained relations between agents and objects in …
Relative pose regressors (RPRs) localize a camera by estimating its relative translation and rotation to a pose-labelled reference. Unlike scene coordinate regression and absolute pose regression methods, which learn absolute scene parameters, RPRs can (theoretically) localize in unseen environments, since they only learn the residual pose between camera pairs. In practice, however, the performance of RPRs is significantly degraded in unseen scenes. In this work, we propose to aggregate paired feature maps into latent codes, instead of operating on global image descriptors, in order to improve…

Monocular absolute 3D fish pose estimation allows for efficient fish length measurement in the longline fisheries, where fishes are under severe deformation during the catching process. This task is challenging since it requires locating absolute 3D fish keypoints based on a short monocular video clip. Unlike related works, which either require expensive 3D ground-truth data and/or multiple-view images to provide depth information, or are limited to rigid objects, we propose a novel frame-based method to estimate the absolute 3D fish pose and fish length from a single-view 2D segmentation mask…

Observational noise, inaccurate segmentation and ambiguity due to symmetry and occlusion lead to inaccurate object pose estimates. While depth- and RGB-based pose refinement approaches increase the accuracy of the resulting pose estimates, they are susceptible to ambiguity in the observation as they consider visual alignment. We propose to leverage the fact that we often observe static, rigid scenes. Thus, the objects therein need to be under physically plausible poses. We show that considering plausibility reduces ambiguity and, in consequence, allows poses to be more accurately predicted in …

NeRFmm is the Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF) that deal with Joint Optimization tasks, i.e., reconstructing real-world scenes and registering camera parameters simultaneously. Despite NeRFmm producing precise scene synthesis and pose estimations, it still struggles to outperform the full-annotated baseline on challenging scenes. In this work, we identify that there exists a systematic sub-optimality in joint optimization and further identify multiple potential sources for it. To diminish the impacts of potential sources, we propose Sinusoidal Neural Radiance Fields (SiNeRF) that leverage sinusoi…

Video-based human pose estimation in crowded scenes is a challenging problem due to occlusion, motion blur, scale variation and viewpoint change, etc. Prior approaches always fail to deal with this problem because of (1) lacking of usage of temporal information; (2) lacking of training data in crowded scenes. In this paper, we focus on improving human pose estimation in videos of crowded scenes from the perspectives of exploiting temporal context and collecting new data. In particular, we first follow the top-down strategy to detect persons and perform single-person pose estimation for each fr…

In this paper we present a fast minimal solver for absolute camera pose estimation from four known points that lie in a plane. We assume a perspective camera model with unknown focal length and unknown radial distortion. The radial distortion is modelled using the division model with one parameter. We show that the solutions to this problem can be found from a univariate six-degree polynomial. This results in a very fast and numerically stable solver.
The goal of this paper is to take a single 2D image of a scene and recover the 3D structure in terms of a small set of factors: a layout representing the enclosing surfaces as well as a set of objects represented in terms of shape and pose. We propose a convolutional neural network-based approach to predict this representation and benchmark it on a large dataset of indoor scenes. Our experiments evaluate a number of practical design questions, demonstrate that we can infer this representation, and quantitatively and qualitatively demonstrate its merits compared to alternate representations.
The 3D world limits the human body pose and the human body pose conveys information about the surrounding objects. Indeed, from a single image of a person placed in an indoor scene, we as humans are adept at resolving ambiguities of the human pose and room layout through our knowledge of the physical laws and prior perception of the plausible object and human poses. However, few computer vision models fully leverage this fact. In this work, we propose an end-to-end trainable model that perceives the 3D scene from a single RGB image, estimates the camera pose and the room layout, and reconstruc…
The common approach to 3D human pose estimation is predicting the body joint coordinates relative to the hip. This works well for a single person but is insufficient in the case of multiple interacting people. Methods predicting absolute coordinates first estimate a root-relative pose then calculate the translation via a secondary optimization task. We propose a neural network that predicts joints in a camera centered coordinate system instead of a root-relative one. Unlike previous methods, our network works in a single step without any post-processing. Our network beats previous methods on t…

In this paper, we propose a novel monocular ray-based 3D (Ray3D) absolute human pose estimation with calibrated camera. Accurate and generalizable absolute 3D human pose estimation from monocular 2D pose input is an ill-posed problem. To address this challenge, we convert the input from pixel space to 3D normalized rays. This conversion makes our approach robust to camera intrinsic parameter changes. To deal with the in-the-wild camera extrinsic parameter variations, Ray3D explicitly takes the camera extrinsic parameters as an input and jointly models the distribution between the 3D pose rays …

Employing a head-mounted device integrated with a LiDAR and camera, we record 12 human subjects' activities over 10 diverse urban scenes from an egocentric view. Frame-wise annotations for 2D key points, 3D pose parameters, and global translations are provided, together with reconstructed scene point clouds. To obtain accurate 3D ground truth in such large dynamic scenes, we propose a joint optimizatio…
Humans naturally perceive a 3D scene in front of them through accumulation of information obtained from multiple interconnected projections of the scene and by interpreting their correspondence. This phenomenon has inspired artificial intelligence models to extract the depth and view angle of the observed scene by modeling the correspondence between different views of that scene. Our paper is built upon previous works in the field of unsupervised depth and relative camera pose estimation from temporal consecutive video frames using deep learning (DL) models. Our approach uses a hybrid learning…
Multi-person pose estimation is fundamental to many computer vision tasks and has made significant progress in recent years. However, few previous methods explored the problem of pose estimation in crowded scenes while it remains challenging and inevitable in many scenarios. Moreover, current benchmarks cannot provide an appropriate evaluation for such cases. In this paper, we propose a novel and efficient method to tackle the problem of pose estimation in the crowd and a new dataset to better evaluate algorithms. Our model consists of two key components: joint-candidate single person pose est…
While 3D object detection and pose estimation has been studied for a long time, its evaluation is not yet completely satisfactory. Indeed, existing datasets typically consist in numerous acquisitions of only a few scenes because of the tediousness of pose annotation, and existing evaluation protocols cannot handle properly objects with symmetries. This work aims at addressing those two points. We first present automatic techniques to produce fully annotated RGBD data of many object instances in arbitrary poses, with which we produce a dataset of thousands of independent scenes of bulk parts co…
In 3D human pose estimation one of the biggest problems is the lack of large, diverse datasets. This is especially true for multi-person 3D pose estimation, where, to our knowledge, there are only machine generated annotations available for training. To mitigate this issue, we introduce a network that can be trained with additional RGB-D images in a weakly supervised fashion. Due to the existence of cheap sensors, videos with depth maps are widely available, and our method can exploit a large, unannotated dataset. Our algorithm is a monocular, multi-person, absolute pose estimator. We evaluate…
Scene coordinate regression has become an essential part of current camera re-localization methods. Different versions, such as regression forests and deep learning methods, have been successfully applied to estimate the corresponding camera pose given a single input image. In this work, we propose to regress the scene coordinates pixel-wise for a given RGB image by using deep learning. Compared to the recent methods, which usually employ RANSAC to obtain a robust pose estimate from the established point correspondences, we propose to regress confidences of these correspondences, which allows …

Depth estimation is usually ill-posed and ambiguous for monocular camera-based 3D multi-person pose estimation. Since LiDAR can capture accurate depth information in long-range scenes, it can benefit both the global localization of individuals and the 3D pose estimation by providing rich geometry features. Motivated by this, we propose a monocular camera and single LiDAR-based method for 3D multi-person pose estimation in large-scale scenes, which is easy to deploy and insensitive to light. Specifically, we design an effective fusion strategy to take advantage of multi-modal input data, includ…

Affordance modeling plays an important role in visual understanding. In this paper, we aim to predict affordances of 3D indoor scenes, specifically what human poses are afforded by a given indoor environment, such as sitting on a chair or standing on the floor. In order to predict valid affordances and learn possible 3D human poses in indoor scenes, we need to understand the semantic and geometric structure of a scene as well as its potential interactions with a human. To learn such a model, a large-scale dataset of 3D indoor affordances is required. In this work, we build a fully automatic 3D…

We present MeshLeTemp, a powerful method for 3D human pose and mesh reconstruction from a single image. In terms of human body priors encoding, we propose using a learnable template human mesh instead of a constant template as utilized by previous state-of-the-art methods. The proposed learnable template reflects not only vertex-vertex interactions but also the human pose and body shape, being able to adapt to diverse images. We conduct extensive experiments to show the generalizability of our method on unseen scenarios.
We address the issue of domain gap when making use of synthetic data to train a scene-specific object detector and pose estimator. While previous works have shown that the constraints of learning a scene-specific model can be leveraged to create geometrically and photometrically consistent synthetic data, care must be taken to design synthetic content which is as close as possible to the real-world data distribution. In this work, we propose to solve domain gap through the use of appearance randomization to generate a wide range of synthetic objects to span the space of realistic images for tr…

Using IMUs attached at the body limbs and a head mounted camera looking outwards, HPS fuses camera based self-localization with IMU-based human body tracking. The former provides drift-free but noisy position and orientation estimates while the latter is accurate in the short-term but subject to drift over longer periods of time. Recovering multi-person 3D poses with absolute scales from a single RGB image is a challenging problem due to the inherent depth and scale ambiguity from a single view. Addressing this ambiguity requires to aggregate various cues over the entire image, such as body sizes, scene layouts, and inter-person relationships. However, most previous methods adopt a top-down scheme that first performs 2D pose detection and then regresses the 3D pose and scale for each detected person individually, ignoring global contextual cues. In this paper, we propose a novel system that first regresses a set of 2.5…

Epipolar constraints are at the core of feature matching and depth estimation in current multi-person multi-camera 3D human pose estimation methods. Despite the satisfactory performance of this formulation in sparser crowd scenes, its effectiveness is frequently challenged under denser crowd circumstances mainly due to two sources of ambiguity. The first is the mismatch of human joints resulting from the simple cues provided by the Euclidean distances between joints and epipolar lines. The second is the lack of robustness from the naive formulation of the problem as a least squares minimizatio…

Camera pose estimation is an important problem in computer vision. Common techniques either match the current image against keyframes with known poses, directly regress the pose, or establish correspondences between keypoints in the image and points in the scene to estimate the pose. In recent years, regression forests have become a popular alternative to establish such correspondences. They achieve accurate results, but have traditionally needed to be trained offline on the target scene, preventing relocalisation in new environments. Recently, we showed how to circumvent this limitation by ad…
Generative reconstruction methods compute the 3D configuration (such as pose and/or geometry) of a shape by optimizing the overlap of the projected 3D shape model with images. Proper handling of occlusions is a big challenge, since the visibility function that indicates if a surface point is seen from a camera can often not be formulated in closed form, and is in general discrete and non-differentiable at occlusion boundaries. We present a new scene representation that enables an analytically differentiable closed-form formulation of surface visibility. In contrast to previous methods, this yi…

Semantic reconstruction of indoor scenes refers to both scene understanding and object reconstruction. Existing works either address one part of this problem or focus on independent objects. In this paper, we bridge the gap between understanding and reconstruction, and propose an end-to-end solution to jointly reconstruct room layout, object bounding boxes and meshes from a single image. Instead of separately resolving scene understanding and object reconstruction, our method builds upon a holistic scene context and proposes a coarse-to-fine hierarchy with three components: 1. room layout with…

Absolute pose estimation is a fundamental problem in computer vision, and it is a typical parameter estimation problem, meaning that efforts to solve it will always suffer from outlier-contaminated data. Conventionally, for a fixed dimensionality d and the number of measurements N, a robust estimation problem cannot be solved faster than O(N^d). Furthermore, it is almost impossible to remove d from the exponent of the runtime of a globally optimal algorithm. However, absolute pose estimation is a geometric parameter estimation problem, and thus has special constraints. In this paper, we consid…
