Extracting the Hamiltonian of interacting quantum-information processing systems is a keystone problem in the realization of complex phenomena and large-scale quantum computers. The remarkable growth of the field increasingly requires precise, widely-applicable, and modular methods that can model the quantum electrodynamics of the physical circuits, and even of their more-subtle renormalization effects. Here, we present a computationally-efficient method satisfying these criteria. The method partitions a quantum device into compact lumped or quasi-distributed cells. Each is first simulated individually. The composite system is then reduced and mapped to a set of simple subsystem building blocks and their pairwise interactions. The method operates within the quasi-lumped approximation and, with no further approximation, systematically accounts for constraints, couplings, parameter renormalizations, and non-perturbative loading effects. We experimentally validate the method on large-scale, state-of-the-art superconducting quantum processors. We find that the full method improves the experimental agreement by a factor of two over taking standard coupling approximations when tested on the most sensitive and dressed Hamiltonian parameters of the measured devices.

Physical systems for quantum computation require calibration of the control parameters based on their physical characteristics by performing a chain of experiments that gather most precise information about the given device. It follows that there is a need for automated data acquisition and interpretation. In this work, we have developed a tool that allows for automatic analysis of single-tone spectroscopy (STS) results for a single cell consisting of qubit and resonator in the circuit quantum electrodynamics (cQED) architecture. Using analytic approaches and maximum likelihood estimation, our…
One of the most studied model systems in quantum optics is a two-level atom strongly coupled to a single mode of the electromagnetic field stored in a cavity, a research field named cavity quantum electrodynamics or CQED. CQED has recently received renewed attention due to its implementation with superconducting artificial atoms and coplanar resonators in the so-called circuit quantum electrodynamics (cQED) architecture. In cQED, the couplings can be much stronger than in CQED due to the design flexibility of superconducting circuits and to the enhanced field confinement in one-dimensional cav…
Recently, there has been much interest in simulating quantum field theory effects of matter and gauge fields. In a recent work [Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 275301 (2011)] a method for simulating compact Quantum Electrodynamics (cQED) using Bose-Einstein condensates has been suggested. We suggest an alternative approach, which relies on single atoms in an optical lattice, carrying 2l+1 internal levels, which converges rapidly to cQED as l increases. That enables the simulation of cQED in 2+1 dimensions in both the weak and the strong coupling regimes, hence allowing to probe confinement as well as ot…
We report experiments on superconducting flux qubits in a circuit quantum electrodynamics (cQED) setup. Two qubits, independently biased and controlled, are coupled to a coplanar waveguide resonator. Dispersive qubit state readout reaches a maximum contrast of $72\,\%$. We find intrinsic energy relaxation times at the symmetry point of $7\,μ\text{s}$ and $20\,μ\text{s}$ and levels of flux noise of $2.6\,μΦ_0/\sqrt{\text{Hz}}$ and $2.7\,μΦ_0/\sqrt{\text{Hz}}$ at 1 Hz for the two qubits. We discuss the origin of decoherence in the measured devices. These results demonstrate the potential of cQED…
Cavity quantum electrodynamics (CQED) investigates the interaction between light confined in a resonator and particles, such as atoms. In recent years, CQED experiments have reached the optical domain resulting in many interesting applications in the realm of quantum information processing. For many of these application it is necessary to overcome limitations imposed by photon loss. In this context whispering-gallery mode (WGM) resonators have obtained significant interest. Besides their small mode volume and their ultra high quality, they also exhibit favorable polarization properties that gi…
Numerous loss mechanisms can limit coherence and scalability of planar and 3D-based circuit quantum electrodynamics (cQED) devices, particularly due to their packaging. The low loss and natural isolation of 3D enclosures make them good candidates for coherent scaling. We introduce a coaxial transmission line device architecture with coherence similar to traditional 3D cQED systems. Measurements demonstrate well-controlled external and on-chip couplings, a spectrum absent of cross-talk or spurious modes, and excellent resonator and qubit lifetimes. We integrate a resonator-qubit system in this …
We theoretically investigate the strange phenomenon of attraction between the cavity mode and the exciton mode that has been experimentally observed in a photonic crystal cavity. Our results within the Lindblad master equation approach successfully explain why the apparent cavity-to-exciton spectral shifting occurs, and how this phenomenon is a manifestation of a dynamical phase transition in the system. Moreover, our findings are in good qualitative agreement with pioneer experimental results as well as support the hypothesis that an intermediate coupling regime exists in the cavity quantum e…
Coherent interfaces between optical photons and long-lived matter qubits form a key resource for a broad range of quantum technologies. Cavity quantum electrodynamics (cQED) offers a route to achieve such an interface by enhancing interactions between cavity-confined photons and individual emitters. Over the last two decades, a promising new class of emitters based on defect centers in diamond have emerged, combining long spin coherence times with atom-like optical transitions. More recently, advances in optical resonator technologies have made it feasible to realize cQED in diamond. This arti…
We study universal quantum computation in the cavity quantum electrodynamics (CQED) framework exploiting two orthonormal two-photon generalized binomial states as qubit and dispersive interactions of Rydberg atoms with high-$Q$ cavities. We show that an arbitrary qubit state may be generated and that controlled-NOT and 1-qubit rotation gates can be realized via standard atom-cavity interactions.

We use machine learning techniques to design a 50 ns three-qubit flux-tunable controlled-controlled-phase gate with fidelity of >99.99% for nearest-neighbor coupled transmons in circuit quantum electrodynamics architectures. We explain our gate design procedure where we enforce realistic constraints, and analyze the new gate's robustness under decoherence, distortion, and random noise. Our controlled-controlled-phase gate in combination with two single-qubit gates realizes a Toffoli gate which is widely used in quantum circuits, logic synthesis, quantum error correction, and quantum games.

A functioning quantum computer will be a machine that builds up, in a programmable way, nonclassical correlations in a multipartite quantum system. Linear optics quantum computation (LOQC) is an approach for achieving this function that requires only simple, reliable linear optical elements, namely beam splitters and phase shifters. Nonlinear optics is only required in the form of single-photon sources for state initialization, and detectors. However, the latter remain difficult to achieve with high fidelity. A new setting for quantum optics has arisen in circuit quantum electrodynamics (cQED)…
The unique features of quantum theory offer a powerful new paradigm for information processing. Translating these mathematical abstractions into useful algorithms and applications requires quantum systems with significant complexity and sufficiently low error rates. Such quantum systems must be made from robust hardware that can coherently store, process, and extract the encoded information, as well as possess effective quantum error correction (QEC) protocols to detect and correct errors. Circuit quantum electrodynamics (cQED) provides a promising hardware platform for implementing robust qua…
Recent experiments demonstrated the cooling of a microwave mode of a high-quality dielectric resonator coupled to optically cooled nitrogen-vacancy (NV) spins in diamond. Our recent theoretical study [arXiv:2110.10950] pointed out the cooled NV spins can be used to realize cavity quantum electrodynamics effects (C-QED) at room temperature. In this article, we propose to modify the setup used in a recent diamond maser experiment [Nature 55, 493-496 (2018)], which features a higher spin transition frequency, a lower spin-dephasing rate and a stronger NV spins-resonator coupling, to realize bette…

Consequently, they are widely applied, for example, in gas detection, security, THz imaging, astrophysical observations, and medical applications. A new spectrum of important applications is currently emerging from quantum technology and especially from electrical circuits behaving quantum mechanically. This circuit quantum electrodynamics (cQED) has given rise to unprecedented single-photon detectors and a quantum computer supreme to …
The future development of quantum information using superconducting circuits requires Josephson qubits with long coherence times combined to a high-delity readout. Major progress in the control of coherence has recently been achieved using circuit quantum electrodynamics (cQED) architectures, where the qubit is embedded in a coplanar waveguide resonator (CPWR) which both provides a well controlled electromagnetic environment and serves as qubit readout. In particular a new qubit design, the transmon, yields reproducibly long coherence times. However, a high-delity single-shot readout of the tr…
Circuit Quantum Electrodynamics (cQED), the study of the interaction between superconducting circuits behaving as artificial atoms and 1-dimensional transmission-line resonators, has shown much promise for quantum information processing tasks. For the purposes of quantum computing it is usual to approximate the artificial atoms as 2-level qubits, and much effort has been expended on attempts to isolate these qubits from the environment and to invent ever more sophisticated control and measurement schemes. Rather than focussing on these technological aspects of the field, this thesis investigat…
Quantum plasmonics extends cavity quantum electrodynamics (cQED) concepts to the nanoscale, taking benefit from the strongly subwavelength confinement of the plasmon modes supported by metal nanostructures. In this work, we describe in detail collective strong coupling to a plasmonic nanocavity. Similarities and differences to cQED are emphasized. We notably observe that the Rabi splitting can strongly deviate from the standard $\sqrt{N_e}ΔΩ_1$ law, where $N_e$ is the number of emitters and $ΔΩ_1$ the Rabi splitting for a single emitter. In addition, we discuss the collective Lamb shift and th…
We study a photonic circuit consisting of a quantum dot, QD, coupled to a photon cavity over a wide range of temperature up to room temperature. A key component of such a system is presented here in the form of a Purcell-enhanced single-photon source based on Cavity Quantum Electrodynamics, cQED. We use a real set of pure dephasing data extracted from experimental measurements of InGaAs QD to calculate the effective QD-cavity coupling strength, the Purcell factor, and the single photon efficiency emerged from the QD-cavity system in the cases without and with detuning. In the non-detuned syste…

Recent technological advances in cavity quantum electrodynamics (CQED) are paving the way to utilise multiple quantum emitters confined in a single optical cavity. In such systems it is crucially important to control the quantum mechanical coupling of individual emitters to the cavity mode. In this regard, combining ion trap technologies with CQED provides a particularly promising approach due to the well-established motional control over trapped ions. Here we experimentally demonstrate coupling of up to five trapped ions in a string to a high-finesse optical cavity. By changing the axial posi…

We analyze the requirements for fault-tolerant quantum computation with atom-atom gates based on cavity quantum electrodynamics (cQED) mediated by a photon with a finite pulse length. For short photon pulses, the distorted shape of the reflected pulses from the cQED system is a serious error source. We optimize the cQED system parameters to minimize the infidelity due to the shape distortion and the photon losses in a well-balanced manner for the fault-tolerant scheme using probabilistic gates [H. Goto and K. Ichimura, Phys. Rev. A 80, 040303(R) (2009)]. Our optimization greatly relaxes the re…
Readout and control of fermionic spins in solid-state systems are key primitives of quantum information processing and microscopic magnetic sensing. The highly localized nature of most fermionic spins decouples them from parasitic degrees of freedom, but makes long-range interoperability difficult to achieve. In light of this challenge, an active effort is underway to integrate fermionic spins with circuit quantum electrodynamics (cQED), which was originally developed in the field of superconducting qubits to achieve single-shot, quantum-non-demolition (QND) measurements and long-range couplin…
Interfacing stationary qubits with propagating photons is a fundamental problem in quantum technology. Cavity quantum electrodynamics (CQED) invokes a mediator degree of freedom in the form of a far-detuned cavity mode, the adaptation of which to superconducting circuits (cQED) proved remarkably fruitful. The cavity both blocks the qubit emission and it enables a dispersive readout of the qubit state. Yet, a more direct (cavityless) interface is possible with atomic clocks, in which an orbital cycling transition can scatter photons depending on the state of a hyperfine or quadrupole qubit tran…
Despite tremendous advances in the fundamentals and applications of cavity quantum electrodynamics (CQED), investigations in this field have primarily been limited to optical cavities composed of purely dielectric materials. Here, we demonstrate a hybrid metal-dielectric nanocavity design and realize it in the InAs/GaAs quantum photonics platform utilizing angled rotational metal evaporation. Key features of our nanometallic light-matter interface include: (i) order of magnitude reduction in mode volume compared to that of leading photonic crystal CQED systems; (ii) surface-emitting nanoscale …

The strong-coupling regime of cavity-quantum-electrodynamics (cQED) represents light-matter interaction at the fully quantum level. Adding a single photon shifts the resonance frequencies, a profound nonlinearity. cQED is a test-bed of quantum optics and the basis of photon-photon and atom-atom entangling gates. At microwave frequencies, success in cQED has had a transformative effect. At optical frequencies, the gates are potentially much faster and the photons can propagate over long distances and be easily detected, ideal features for quantum networks. Following pioneering work on single at…

We suggest a method to simulate lattice compact Quantum Electrodynamics (cQED) using ultracold atoms in optical lattices, which includes dynamical Dirac fermions in 2+1 dimensions. This allows to test dynamical effects of confinement as well as 2d flux loops deformations and breaking, and to observe Wilson-loop area-law.
We show that the physics underlying the dynamical Casimir effect may generate multipartite quantum correlations. To achieve it, we propose a circuit quantum electrodynamics (cQED) scenario involving superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs), cavities, and superconducting qubits, also called artificial atoms. Our results predict the generation of highly entangled states for two and three superconducting qubits in different geometric configurations with realistic parameters. This proposal paves the way for a scalable method of multipartite entanglement generation in cavity networks t…
Superconducting coplanar-waveguide (CPW) resonators are one of the key devices in circuit quantum electrodynamics (cQED). Their performance can be limited by dielectric losses in the substrate and in the material interfaces. Reliable modeling is required to aid in the design of low-loss CPW structures for cQED. We analyze the geometric dependence of the dielectric losses in CPW structures using finite-element modeling of the participation ratios of the lossy regions. In a practical scenario, uncertainties in the the dielectric constants and loss tangents of these regions introduce uncertaintie…
We study Landau-Zener-Stückelberg (LZS) interferometry in a cQED architecture under effects of dissipation. To be specific, we consider a superconducting qubit driven by a dc+ac signal and coupled to a transmission line resonator, but our results are valid for general qubit-resonators devices. To take the environment into account, we assume that the resonator is coupled to an ohmic quantum bath. The Floquet-Born-Markov master equation is numerically solved to obtain the dynamics of the system for arbitrary amplitude of the drive and different time scales. We unveil important differences in the…

In particular, superconducting quantum circuits have successfully demonstrated many of the requirements for quantum computing, including coherence levels that approach the thresholds for scaling. However, it remains challenging to couple a large number of circuit components through controllable channels while suppressing any other interactions. We propose a hardware …
