There is great need for high intensity proton beams from compact particle accelerators in particle physics, medical isotope production, and materials- and energy-research. To address this need, we present, for the first time, a design for a compact isochronous cyclotron that will be able to deliver 10 mA of 60 MeV protons - an order of magnitude higher than on-market compact cyclotrons and a factor four higher than research machines. A key breakthrough is that vortex motion is incorporated in the design of a cyclotron, leading to clean extraction. Beam losses on the septa of the electrostatic extraction channels stay below 50 W (a factor four below the required safety limit), while maintaining good beam quality. We present a set of highly accurate particle-in-cell simulations, and an uncertainty quantification of select beam input parameters using machine learning, showing the robustness of the design. This design can be utilized for beams for experiments in particle and nuclear physics, materials science and medical physics as well as for industrial applications.
Beam Dynamics Simulation for the High Intensity DAEδALUS Cyclotrons
在DAEδALUS(Decay-At-rest Experiment for δCP studies At the Laboratory for Underground Science)项目中,提出了高功率H+2回旋加速器链,以有效地提供动能为800 MeV、平均功率在MW范围内的质子束。
One of the decisive issues in the design and operation of cyclotrons is the choice of the beam extraction method. Typical methods are extraction by electrostatic extractors and by stripping. The former method requires DC high voltage electrodes which are notorious for high-voltage breakdowns. The latter method requires beams of atomic or molecular ions which are notorious for rest gas and Lorentz stripping. Here we discuss the conditions to be met such that a beam will leave the magnetic field of an isochronous cyclotron purely by fast acceleration.
Beam stripping losses of H- ion beams by interactions with residual gas and electromagnetic fields are evaluated. These processes play an important role in compact cyclotrons where the beam is produced on an internal ion source, and they operate under high magnetic field. The implementation of stripping interactions into the beam dynamics code OPAL provides an adequate framework to estimate the stripping losses for compact cyclotrons such as AMIT. The analysis is focused on optimizing the high energy beam current delivered to the target. The optimization is performed by adjusting parameters of…
Ion extraction from DECRIS-PM source is simulated by using initial distributions of ions at the extraction aperture obtained with NAM-ECRIS code. Three-dimensional calculations of plasma emissive surface are done and ions are traced in the extraction region. The ion beam profiles show strong aberrations due to shape of plasma meniscus; hollow beam features are reproduced, as well as changes in profiles for different focusing conditions.
The Decay-At-rest Experiment for delta-CP violation At a Laboratory for Underground Science (DAEdALUS) and the Isotope Decay-At-Rest experiment (IsoDAR) are proposed experiments to search for CP violation in the neutrino sector, and "sterile" neutrinos, respectively. In order to be decisive within 5 years, the neutrino flux and, consequently, the driver beam current (produced by chained cyclotrons) must be high. H2+ was chosen as primary beam ion in order to reduce the electrical current and thus space charge. This has the added advantage of allowing for stripping extraction at the exit of the…
This paper presents the magnetic design of a 100MeV Separated Sector Medical Cyclotron (SSMC) as well as the optimization of the injection line magnets where will be used to transport the 14MeV proton beam from the Azimuthally Varying Field (AVF) cyclotron to the SSMC. The study demonstrates that the isochronous magnetic field with a tolerance around 10-4 T can be obtained all along prescribed path by placing three sets of correction trim coils in the pole tips. The result of Betatron oscillations is sufficient to verify that the focusing forces of the magnetic field can hold particles close t…
We present an upgrade to the particle-in-cell ion beam simulation code OPAL that enables us to run highly realistic simulations of the spiral inflector system of a compact cyclotron. This upgrade includes a new geometry class and field solver that can handle the complicated boundary conditions posed by the electrode system in the central region of the cyclotron both in terms of particle termination, and calculation of self-fields. Results are benchmarked against the analytical solution of a coasting beam. As a practical example, the spiral inflector and the first revolution in a 1 MeV/amu test…
In recent years, the interest in high intensity proton beams in excess of several milli-Amperes has risen. Potential applications are in neutrino physics, materials and energy research, and isotope production. Continuous wave proton beams of five to ten milli-Amperes are now in reach due to advances in accelerator technology and through improved understanding of the beam dynamics. As an example application, we present the proposed IsoDAR experiment, a search for so-called sterile neutrinos and non-standard interaction using the KamLAND detector located in Japan. We present updated sensitivitie…
The project of a10MeV PET cyclotron accelerator for medical diagnosis and treatment was started at Amirkabir University of Technology in 2012. The low-level RF system of cyclotron accelerator is designed to stabilize acceleration voltage and control the resonance frequency of the cavity. In this work Intelligent Low Level Radio Frequency Circuit or ILLRF suitable for Most of the AVF cyclotron accelerators was designed by the beam monitoring device and narrow band tunable band-pass filter. In this design, for the RF phase detection does not need to signal processing by microcontroller
A gas-filled reverse cyclotron for the thermalisation of energetic beams is under construction at NSCL/MSU. Rare isotopes produced via projectile fragmentation after in-flight separation will be injected into the device and converted into low-energy beams through buffer gas interactions as they spiral towards the centre of the device. The extracted thermal beams will be used for low energy experiments such as precision mass measurements with traps or laser spectroscopy, and further transport for reacceleration. Detailed calculations have been performed to optimize the magnetic field design as …
In this technical report, the work done by members of the DAE$δ$ALUS collaboration on simulating the acceleration of 5 mA of H2+ in the IsoDAR compact isochronous cyclotron is summarized. The findings are that sufficient turn separation between the (N-1)th and Nth turn can be achieved with either initially matched but also with mismatched beams by careful placement of collimators to scrape away halo particles before the beam energy has reached 2 MeV/amu. Here we define "sufficient" as < 200 W beam loss on the septum. In the acceleration simulations, beam losses on the collimators vary from 10%…
Recently, the use of $\mathrm{H}_2^+$ ions instead of protons to overcome space charge challenges in compact cyclotrons has received much attention. This technique has the potential to increase the available beam current from compact cyclotrons by an order of magnitude, paving the way for applications in energy research, medical isotope production, and particle physics, e.g. a decisive search for sterile neutrinos through the IsoDAR experiment. For IsoDAR we go a step beyond just using $\mathrm{H}_2^+$ and add pre-bunching through a Radio-Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ) embedded in the cyclotron yo…
Classical, isochronous, and synchro-cyclotrons are introduced. Transverse and longitudinal beam dynamics in these accelerators are covered. The problem of vertical focusing and iscochronism in compact isochronous cyclotrons is treated in some detail. Different methods for isochronization of the cyclotron magnetic field are discussed. The limits of the classical cyclotron are explained. Typical features of the synchro-cyclotron, such as the beam capture problem, stable phase motion, and the extraction problem are discussed. The main design goals for beam injection are explained and special prob…
The use of superconductivity is well-known as a method to increase the average field of a cyclotron and thereby to allow a substantial reduction of its size and mass. We present a compact high-field design for the first superconducting cyclotron with rare-earth (holmium) poles. Our design supports stable acceleration of protons to Ek = 70 MeV with no significant limit in beam current, suitable for wide applications in ocular therapy, isotope production, radiobiological studies and nuclear physics.
We investigate limits on the current of the PSI Injector II high intensity separate-sector isochronous cyclotron, in its present configuration and after a proposed upgrade. Accelerator Driven Subcritical Reactors, neutron and neutrino experiments, and medical isotope production all benefit from increases in current, even at the ~ 10% level: the PSI cyclotrons provide relevant experience. As space charge dominates at low beam energy, the injector is critical. Understanding space charge effects and halo formation through detailed numerical modelling gives clues on how to maximise the extracted c…
We show that the space charge dynamics of high intensity beams in the plane perpendicular to the magnetic field in cyclotrons is described by the two-dimensional Euler equations for an incompressible fluid. This analogy with fluid dynamics gives a unified and intuitive framework to explain the beam spiraling and beam break up behavior observed in experiments and in simulations. In particular, we demonstrate that beam break up is the result of a classical instability occurring in fluids subject to a sheared flow. We give scaling laws for the instability and predict the nonlinear evolution of be…
This paper presents a simulation study of a permanent magnet electron cyclotron resonance ion source (ECRIS) with a minimum-B quadrupole magnetic field topology. The magnetic field is made to conform to conventional ECRIS with $B_\textrm{min}/B_\textrm{ECR}$ of 0.67 and a last closed magnetic isosurface of 1.86$B_\textrm{ECR}$ at 10 GHz. The distribution of magnetic field gradients parallel to the field, affecting the electron heating efficiency, cover a range from 0 to 13 T/m, being similar to conventional ECRIS. Therefore it is expected that the novel ion source produces warm electrons and h…
IsoDAR is a novel experiment designed to measure neutrino oscillations through $\barν_e$ disappearance, thus providing a definitive search for sterile neutrinos. In order to generate the necessary anti-neutrino flux, a high intensity primary proton beam is needed. In IsoDAR, $\mathrm{H}_2^+$ is accelerated and is stripped into protons just before the target, to overcome space charge issues at injection. As part of the design, we have refined an old proposal to use an RFQ to axially inject bunched $\mathrm{H}_2^+$ ions into the driver cyclotron. This method has several advantages over a classic…
The usage of numerical models to study the evolution of particle beams is an essential step in the design process of particle accelerators However, uncertainties of input quantities such as beam energy and magnetic field lead to simulation results that do not fully agree with measurements, hence the final machine will behave slightly differently than the simulations In case of cyclotrons such discrepancies affect the overall turn pattern or may even alter the number of turns in the machine Inaccuracies at the PSI Ring cyclotron facility that may harm the isochronism are compensated by addition…
CYRCé is a TR24 cyclotron installed at the Institut Pluridisciplinaire Hubert Curien (IPHC) of Strasbourg operating at energies of 16-25 MeV and at intensities up to 400 $μ$A. The accelerator is used to produce and provide radioelements for PET and for SPECT. In 2015, IPHC started to develop a platform with the aim of performing radiobiological experiments. The PRECy platform foresees to contain three-to-five experimental stations linked to beamlines expanded from the second exit port of the cyclotron. This extension allows devoting one of the beamlines for detector studies within the framewor…
This document addresses concerns raised about possible limits, due to space charge, to the maximum H2+ ion beam current that can be injected into and accepted by a compact cyclotron. The discussion of the compact cyclotron is primarily within the context of the proposed DAEdALUS and IsoDAR neutrino experiments. These concerns are examined by the collaboration and addressed individually. While some of the concerns are valid, and present serious challenges to the proposed program, the collaboration sees no immediate showstoppers. However, some of the issues raised clearly need to be addressed ca…
Compact H$^-$ cyclotrons are used all across the globe to produce medical isotopes. Machines with external ion sources have demonstrated average extracted currents on the order of a few mA, although reported operational numbers are typically around 1\,mA or below. To explore the possibility of extracting even more current from such cyclotrons, it is important to understand the mechanisms that drive intensity limits and how they scale. In this paper we review some of the key aspects of the beam dynamics in the central region of compact cyclotrons, including rf electric focusing and space charge…
Effective and accurate computer simulations are highly important in accelerator design and production. The most difficult and important task in cyclotron development is magnetic field simulations. It is necessary to achieve the accuracy of the model that is higher than the tolerance for the magnetic field in the real magnet. An accurate model of the magnet and other systems of the cyclotron allows us to perform beam tracking through the whole accelerator from the ion source to extraction. While high accuracy is necessary in the late stages of research and development, high performance of the s…
Fundamental studies of excitation and non-linear evolution of kinetic instabilities of strongly nonequlibrium hot plasmas confined in open magnetic traps suggest new opportunities for fine-tuning of conventional electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) ion sources. These devices are widely used for the production of particle beams of high charge state ions. Operating the ion source in controlled turbulence regime allows increasing the absorbed power density and therefore the volumetric plasma energy content in the dense part of the discharge surrounded by the ECR surface, which leads to enhanced bea…
Existing analytical models for transverse beam dynamics in isochronous cyclotrons are often not valid or not precise for relativistic energies. The main difficulty in developing such models lies in the fact that cross-terms between derivatives of the average magnetic field and the azimuthally varying components cannot be neglected at higher energies. Taking such cross-terms rigorously into account results in an even larger number of terms that need to be included in the equations. In this paper, a method is developed which is relativistic correct and which provides results that are practical a…
From Beam to Bedside: Reinforcing Domestic Supply of $^{99}$Mo/$^{99m}$Tc using Novel High-Current D+ Cyclotrons for Compact Neutron Generation and $^{99}$Mo Production
The IsoDAR collaboration is developing a high-current cyclotron for a neutrino search experiment. Designed to deliver 10 mA of 60 MeV protons, the current and power of this cyclotron far exceed those of existing accelerators, opening new possibilities for the production of radiopharmaceutical isotopes, producing very high-activity samples in very short times. The cyclotron can also be easily configured to deliver ions other than protons including 1 mA of alpha particles at 240 MeV: this flexibility gives a broad reach into new areas of isotope production. We explain how IsoDAR overcomes the be…
The two-frequency heating technique was studied to increase the beam intensities of highly charged ions provided by the high-voltage extraction configuration (HEC) ion source at the National Institute of Radiological Sciences (NIRS). The observed dependences on microwave power and frequency suggested that this technique improved plasma stability but it required precise frequency tuning and more microwave power than was available before 2013. Recently, a new, high-power (1200 W) wide bandwidth (17.1-18.5 GHz) travelling-wave-tube amplifier (TWTA) was installed. After some single tests with klys…
The current and future need for high-energy neutrons has been a subject of increasing discussion and concern. Immediate applications for such an intense neutron source include medical isotope production, high-energy physics (HEP) research, and for materials development and to support qualification for fission reactors. Also, and of the utmost importance, is the need for such a source to inform critical gaps in our understanding of the transmutation materials science issues facing fusion power reactors. A 14 MeV fusion prototypical neutron source (FPNS) has been a critical, yet unresolved need …
The 28 GHz ECR(Electron Cyclotron Resonance) ion source is under development to supply various beams from proton to uranium at RISP(Rare Isotope Science Project). The superconducting magnet system for a 28 GHz ECR ion source consists of four solenoid coils and a saddle type sextupole. To meet the design requirement of ECR ion source, a numerical simulation was accomplished by using the KOBRA3-INP to optimize the extraction system which is the three dimensional ion optics code. The influence of the three dimensional magnetic field and the space charge effect was considered to extract the highly…
