A new ion source will be prepared for the CYCLONE30 commercial cyclotron with a much advanced performance compared with the previous one. The newly designed ion source has a very large transparency without deteriorating the beam optics, which is designed to deliver an H- beam at 30 keV. The plasma generator of the ion source is of an axially cusped bucket type, and the whole inner wall, except the cathode filaments and plasma electrode side, functions as an anode. The accelerator assembly consists of three circular aperture electrodes made of copper. The simulation study was focused on finding parameter sets that raise the percent of beam transmitted as large as possible and reduces the beam divergence as low as possible. From the simulation results, it was concluded that it is possible to achieve this goal by sliming the plasma electrode (G1), shortening the first gap (G1-G2), and adjusting the G2 voltage.
Due to its simplicity the classical cyclotron has been used very early for applications in sciency, medicine and industry. Higher energies and intensities were achieved through the concepts of the sector focused isochronous cyclotron and the synchro-cyclotron. Besides those the fixed field alternating gradient accelerator (FFA) represents the most general concept among these types of fixed field accelerators, and the latter one is actively studied and developed for future applications.
This whitepaper summarizes and the state of the field of high-power cyclotrons and FFAs as discussed by international experts during a three-day workshop of the same name. The workshop was held online from Sep 7 to Sep 9, 2021 as part of the US Snowmass'21 Community Exercise, specifically the Accelerator Frontier (AF) and the subpanel Accelerators for Neutrinos (AF02). Thus, we put emphasis on the application of high-power cyclotrons in particle physics, specifically neutrino physics, and as drivers for muon production. In the introduction, we discuss the role of cyclotrons for particle physic…
The project of a10MeV PET cyclotron accelerator for medical diagnosis and treatment was started at Amirkabir University of Technology in 2012. The low-level RF system of cyclotron accelerator is designed to stabilize acceleration voltage and control the resonance frequency of the cavity. In this work Intelligent Low Level Radio Frequency Circuit or ILLRF suitable for Most of the AVF cyclotron accelerators was designed by the beam monitoring device and narrow band tunable band-pass filter. In this design, for the RF phase detection does not need to signal processing by microcontroller
Effective and accurate computer simulations are highly important in accelerator design and production. The most difficult and important task in cyclotron development is magnetic field simulations. It is necessary to achieve the accuracy of the model that is higher than the tolerance for the magnetic field in the real magnet. An accurate model of the magnet and other systems of the cyclotron allows us to perform beam tracking through the whole accelerator from the ion source to extraction. While high accuracy is necessary in the late stages of research and development, high performance of the s…
Accelerators are playing increasingly important roles in basic science, technology, and medicine including nuclear power, industrial irradiation, material science, and neutrino production. Proton and light-ion accelerators in particular have many research, energy and medical applications, providing one of the most effective treatments for many types of cancer. Ultra high-intensity and high-energy (GeV) proton drivers are a critical technology for accelerator-driven sub-critical reactors (ADS) and many HEP programs (Muon Collider). These high-intensity GeV-range proton drivers are particularly …
The usage of numerical models to study the evolution of particle beams is an essential step in the design process of particle accelerators However, uncertainties of input quantities such as beam energy and magnetic field lead to simulation results that do not fully agree with measurements, hence the final machine will behave slightly differently than the simulations In case of cyclotrons such discrepancies affect the overall turn pattern or may even alter the number of turns in the machine Inaccuracies at the PSI Ring cyclotron facility that may harm the isochronism are compensated by addition…
Beam stripping losses of H- ion beams by interactions with residual gas and electromagnetic fields are evaluated. These processes play an important role in compact cyclotrons where the beam is produced on an internal ion source, and they operate under high magnetic field. The implementation of stripping interactions into the beam dynamics code OPAL provides an adequate framework to estimate the stripping losses for compact cyclotrons such as AMIT. The analysis is focused on optimizing the high energy beam current delivered to the target. The optimization is performed by adjusting parameters of…
This paper reports on the conclusions of a 2013 Joint DOE/NCI Workshop, and translates clinical accelerator facility requirements into accelerator and beam-delivery technical specifications. Available or feasible accelerator technologies are compared, including a new concept for a compact, CW, and variable energy light ion accelerator currently under development. This new light ion accelerator is based on advances in non-scaling Fixed-Field Alternating gradient (FFAG) accelerator design. The new design concepts combine isochronous orbits with long (up to 4m) straight sections in a compact race…
A vacuum autoresonance accelerator scheme for electrons, which employs terahertz radiation and currently available magnetic fields, is suggested. Based on numerical simulations, parameter values, which could make the scheme experimentally feasible, are identified and discussed.
We investigate limits on the current of the PSI Injector II high intensity separate-sector isochronous cyclotron, in its present configuration and after a proposed upgrade. Accelerator Driven Subcritical Reactors, neutron and neutrino experiments, and medical isotope production all benefit from increases in current, even at the ~ 10% level: the PSI cyclotrons provide relevant experience. As space charge dominates at low beam energy, the injector is critical. Understanding space charge effects and halo formation through detailed numerical modelling gives clues on how to maximise the extracted c…
There is great need for high intensity proton beams from compact particle accelerators in particle physics, medical isotope production, and materials- and energy-research. To address this need, we present, for the first time, a design for a compact isochronous cyclotron that will be able to deliver 10 mA of 60 MeV protons - an order of magnitude higher than on-market compact cyclotrons and a factor four higher than research machines. A key breakthrough is that vortex motion is incorporated in the design of a cyclotron, leading to clean extraction. Beam losses on the septa of the electrostatic …
This report provides a first design for H2+ accelerators as the DAEdALUS neutrino sources. A description of all aspects of the system, from the ion source to the extracted beam, is provided. The analysis provides a first proof of principle of a full cyclotron system which can provide the necessary beam power for the CP violation search proposed by the DAEdALUS Collaboration.
In recent years, the interest in high intensity proton beams in excess of several milli-Amperes has risen. Potential applications are in neutrino physics, materials and energy research, and isotope production. Continuous wave proton beams of five to ten milli-Amperes are now in reach due to advances in accelerator technology and through improved understanding of the beam dynamics. As an example application, we present the proposed IsoDAR experiment, a search for so-called sterile neutrinos and non-standard interaction using the KamLAND detector located in Japan. We present updated sensitivitie…
PSI operates a cyclotron based high intensity proton accelerator routinely at an average beam power of 1.3MW. With this power the facility is at the worldwide forefront of high intensity proton accelerators. The beam current is practically limited by losses at extraction and the resulting activation of accelerator components. Further intensity upgrades and new projects aiming at an even higher average beam power, are only possible if the relative losses can be lowered in proportion, thus keeping absolute losses at a constant level. Maintaining beam losses at levels allowing hands-on maintenanc…
DAE$δ$ALUS (Decay-At-rest Experiment for $δ_{CP}$ studies At the Laboratory for Underground Science) provides a new approach to the search for CP violation in the neutrino sector. High-power continuous-wave proton cyclotrons efficiently provide the necessary proton beams with an energy of up to 800 MeV to create neutrinos from pion and muon decay-at-rest. The experiment searches for $\barν_μ \rightarrow \barν_e$ at short baselines corresponding to the atmospheric $Δm^2$ region. The $\barν_e$ will be detected via inverse beta decay. Thus, the cyclotrons will be employed at a future ultra-large …
Charged particle therapy, or so-called hadrontherapy, is developing very rapidly. There is large pressure on the scientific community to deliver dedicated accelerators, providing the best possible treatment modalities at the lowest cost. In this context, the Italian research Foundation TERA is developing fast-cycling accelerators, dubbed 'cyclinacs'. These are a combination of a cyclotron (accelerating ions to a fixed initial energy) followed by a high gradient linac boosting the ions energy up to the maximum needed for medical therapy. The linac is powered by many independently controlled kly…
The determination of relative stopping power (RSP) via proton computed tomography (pCT) of a patient is dependent in part on the knowledge of the incoming proton kinetic energies; the uncertainty in these energies is in turn determined by the proton source -- typically a cyclotron. Here we show that reducing the incident proton beam energy spread may significantly improve RSP determination in pCT. We demonstrate that the reduction of beam energy spread from the typical 1.0% (at 70MeV) down to 0.2%, can be achieved at the proton currents needed for imaging at the Paul Scherrer Institut 230MeV c…
The high-intensity rare-isotope accelerator (RAON) of the Rare Isotope Science Project (RISP) in Daejeon, Korea, has been designed to accelerate multiple-charge-state beams. The ion beams, which are generated by Electron Cyclotron Resonance Ion Source (ECR-IS), will be transported through the main Low Energy Beam Transport (LEBT) system to the Radio Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ). While passing the beams through LEBT, we should keep the transverse beam size and longitudinal emittance small. Furthermore, the matching of required twiss parameter at the RFQ entrance will be performed by using electro…
Design studies, for accelerator modules based on an injector cyclotron and a superconducting ring cyclotron able to accelerate H$_2^+$ molecules, are presented. H$_2^+$ molecules are stripped by a foil creating a proton beam, with a maximum energy of 800 MeV and a beam power of 8 MW (CW). This beam would be sent to a beam dump where neutrinos would be produced from pion and muon decays at rest for the Decay At rest Experiment for $δ_{CP}$ At the Laboratory for Underground Science - DAE$δ$ALUS. We are discussing the advantage of H$_2^+$ molecules for acceleration and present precise beam dynami…
This paper presents a simulation study of a permanent magnet electron cyclotron resonance ion source (ECRIS) with a minimum-B quadrupole magnetic field topology. The magnetic field is made to conform to conventional ECRIS with $B_\textrm{min}/B_\textrm{ECR}$ of 0.67 and a last closed magnetic isosurface of 1.86$B_\textrm{ECR}$ at 10 GHz. The distribution of magnetic field gradients parallel to the field, affecting the electron heating efficiency, cover a range from 0 to 13 T/m, being similar to conventional ECRIS. Therefore it is expected that the novel ion source produces warm electrons and h…
This chapter gives an overview of the longitudinal dynamics of the particles in an accelerator and, closely related to that, the issue of synchronization between the particles and the accelerating field. Beginning with the trivial case of electrostatic accelerators, the synchronization condition is explained for a number of driven accelerators like Alvarez linacs, cyclotrons and finally synchrotrons and storage rings, where it plays a crucial role. In the case of the latter, the principle of phase focusing is motivated qualitatively as well as on a mathematically more correct level and the pro…
The Electron String type of Ion Sources (ESIS) was developed, constructed and tested first in the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research. These ion sources can be the appropriate sources for production of pulsed C4+ and C6+ ion beams which can be used for cancer therapy accelerators. In fact the test ESIS Krion-6T already now at the solenoid magnetic field only 4.6 T provides more than 10^10 C4+ ions per pulse and about 5*10^9 C6+ ions per pulse. Such ion sources could be suitable for application at synchrotrons. It was also found, that Krion-6T can provide more than 10^11 C6+ ions per second at…
The protection of accelerator equipment is as old as accelerator technology and was for many years related to high-power equipment. Examples are the protection of powering equipment from overheating (magnets, power converters, high-current cables), of superconducting magnets from damage after a quench and of klystrons. The protection of equipment from beam accidents is more recent. It is related to the increasing beam power of high-power proton accelerators such as ISIS, SNS, ESS and the PSI cyclotron, to the emission of synchrotron light by electron-positron accelerators and FELs, and to the …
Classical, isochronous, and synchro-cyclotrons are introduced. Transverse and longitudinal beam dynamics in these accelerators are covered. The problem of vertical focusing and iscochronism in compact isochronous cyclotrons is treated in some detail. Different methods for isochronization of the cyclotron magnetic field are discussed. The limits of the classical cyclotron are explained. Typical features of the synchro-cyclotron, such as the beam capture problem, stable phase motion, and the extraction problem are discussed. The main design goals for beam injection are explained and special prob…
As we enter the age of precision measurement in neutrino physics, improved flux sources are required. These must have a well-defined flavor content with energies in ranges where backgrounds are low and cross section knowledge is high. Very few sources of neutrinos can meet these requirements. However, pion/muon and isotope decay-at-rest sources qualify. The ideal drivers for decay-at-rest sources are cyclotron accelerators, which are compact and relatively inexpensive. This paper describes a scheme to produce decay-at-rest sources driven by such cyclotrons, developed within the DAEdALUS progra…
Many sophisticated computer models have been developed to understand the behaviour of particle accelerators. Even these complex models often do not describe the measured data. Interactions of the beam with external fields, other particles in the same beam and the beam walls all present modelling challenges. These can be challenging to model correctly even with modern supercomputers. This paper describes OPAL (Object Oriented Parallel Accelerator Library), a parallel open source tool for charged-particle optics in linear accelerators and rings, including 3D space charge. OPAL is built from the …
In this paper we present the development of a simulation code capable of optimizing the geometry of a spiral inflector designed for axial injection into a cyclotron. To do this, an electric field map of the device is generated by utilizing a boundary elements method and then used to track one or more particles. The information from the trajectories is then used to shorten the electrodes of the spiral inflector to adjust for fringing electric fields such that the particles end up on the mid-plane of the cyclotron. This method was also used to analyze the effects of a modified electrode geometry…
Fundamental studies of excitation and non-linear evolution of kinetic instabilities of strongly nonequlibrium hot plasmas confined in open magnetic traps suggest new opportunities for fine-tuning of conventional electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) ion sources. These devices are widely used for the production of particle beams of high charge state ions. Operating the ion source in controlled turbulence regime allows increasing the absorbed power density and therefore the volumetric plasma energy content in the dense part of the discharge surrounded by the ECR surface, which leads to enhanced bea…
Neutrino physics is a forefront topic of today's research. Large detectors installed underground study neutrino properties using neutrino beams from muons decaying in flight. DAEdALUS looks at neutrinos from stopped muons, "decay at rest" (DAR) neutrinos. The DAR neutrino spectrum has effectively no electron antineutrinos (essentially all pi- are absorbed), so a detector with free protons is sensitive to appearance of nu-e-bar oscillating from nu-mu-bar via inverse-beta-decay (IBD). Oscillations are studied using sources relatively near the detector, but which explore the same physics as the h…
Fermilab is developing a compact superconducting CSRF accelerator as a source of a high-power, high-energy electron beam to produce an x-ray beam comparable to $\geq$ 2 MCi of cobalt-60. As part of this development, we are presently assembling a 20 kW, 1.6 MeV prototype that incorporates the four enabling technologies described below. These technologies support a heat budget that is within the capacity of commercially available cryocoolers and eliminate the need for liquid cryogens. The use of superconducting technologies promises efficiencies, wall-plug to beam, of 80% or greater. A summary o…
A linear accelerator, called RAON, has been being developed as a part of Rare Isotope Science Project (RISP) by Institute for Basic Science (IBS) [1]. The linear accelerator utilizes an electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) ion source for providing intense highly charged ion beams to the linear accelerator. 28GHz ECR ion source can extract heavy ion beams from proton to uranium. A superconducting magnet system for 28GHz ECR ion source is composed of hexapole coils and four solenoid coils made with low Tc superconducting wires of NbTi [2]. The electromagnetic force acts on the superconducting magn…
In Japan, research activities by junior and senior high school students show an upward trend. However, there are limited examples of research activities in the field of elementary particles and atoms. This is due to the difficulty associated with procuring research tools such as accelerators or particle detectors. Therefore, we hosted the "Accel Kitchen" in 2018 and 2019 at Cyclotron and Radioisotope Center (CYRIC) in Tohoku University where junior and senior high school students could participate in ongoing research of particle and atomic physics. At each workshop, 12 junior and senior high s…
Every computer model depends on numerical input parameters that are chosen according to mostly conservative but rigorous numerical or empirical estimates. These parameters could for example be the step size for time integrators, a seed for pseudo-random number generators, a threshold or the number of grid points to discretize a computational domain. In case a numerical model is enhanced with new algorithms and modelling techniques the numerical influence on the quantities of interest, the running time as well as the accuracy is often initially unknown. Usually parameters are chosen on a trial-…
A 52MHz Radio Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ) linear accelerator (linac) is designed to serve as an initial structure for the SSC-linac system (injector into Separated Sector Cyclotron). The designed injection and output energy are 3.5 keV/u and 143 keV/u, respectively. Beam dynamics study in RFQ was done using 3-dimensional particle-in-cell code BEAMPATH [1]. Simulation results show that this RFQ structure is characterized by stable value of beam transmission efficiency (at least 95%) for both zero-current mode and for space charge dominated regime. The beam accelerated in RFQ has good quality in …
A room temperature heavy ion linac has been proposed as a new injector of CSRm (the main Cooler Storage Ring) at HIRFL (Heavy Ion Research Facility in Lanzhou), which is expected to improve the performance of HIRFL. The linac injector can supply heavy ion with maximum mass to charge ratio of 7 and injection kinetic energy of 7.272MeV/u for CSRm, and the pulsed beam intensity is 3emA with the duty factor of 3%. Compared with the present cyclotron injector SFC (Sector Focusing Cyclotron), the beam current from linac can be improved by 10-100 times. As the pre-accelerator of the linac, the 108.48…
The problem of simulating the interaction of spacecraft travelling at velocities necessary for starflight with the interplanetary and interstellar medium is considered. Interaction of protons, atoms, and ions at kinetic energies relative to the spacecraft (MeV per nucleon) is essentially a problem of sputtering. More problematic is the impact of dust grains, macroscopic objects on the order of 10 nm ($10^{-21}$ kg) to 1 $μ$m ($10^{-15}$ kg), the effects of which are difficult to calculate, and thus experiments are needed. The maximum velocity of dust grains that can be achieved at present in t…
